Museum of Modern Art, Ahmedabad Effect of Natural Light in Space
Conceptual diagram of relation between a Museum, Event ground, Sabarmati river, and old city of Ahmedabad
The aim of my thesis project was to understand and to study the affect of light in a modern art museum. A modern art museum was chosen as i believe, there are various natures of light that the program demands. Through the process, I wish to demonstrate the power of light: a power to create a sense of drama. Site and Context
The site is situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat( India). Ahmedabad was my choice as it is a major artists’ hub and houses many design institutes but does not have a space to host exhibits of the same. Therefore, I believe that the city deserves a Museum for Modern Arts.
Architectural Response to Context W S
N E
Pedestrian Circulation - Location of common plaza placed here because existing pedestrian circulation makes it an active junction.
Neighborhood - The common plaza connects the Tagore hall and the event ground as it is public in nature.
Vegetation - The building is strategically placed in such a way that it can be protected from the west sun by the existing vegetation on site.
Noise - The building is placed farther away from the sardar bridge to achieve a buffer from the noise.
Vision from site - The wider edge of the building opens to the river on the east by providing a generous view of the old city.
Vision to site - The building will be prominently visible from eastern side of the city as it is located right on the river bank.

• Placement of Museum & Public Plaza and it’s visibility.
Design Concept : 3 central spaces surrounded by 3 different activities.
• Within the museum, the public spaces have been placed on the southern side along with the other existing public spaces; the Tagore hall and the Event ground. • The museum which is public in nature has been placed in the level as of the Event ground, i.e. 4 m above ground level.

Resting Areas • The exhibition galleries are introvert in nature so that the visitors feel disconnected from the world outside therefore the resting areas are placed as a buffer between the two outside and inside of the exhibition space.
The Courtyard • The courtyard is the place where the students will make sculptures, therefore it will act as a should be connection between the exhibition gallery, the workshops, etc. The connections are both visual as well as physical.
The Library • The library is also an important part of the museum where there will be the collection of rare books related to art, information about artists and a wide range of art. • The library is a peaceful place and therefore it has been placed at a raised level. The section above shows the placement of the library.
N
• A cafeteria is a place for gathering artist and also they can do there art works

A Standing Balcony • A standing balcony is designed and is placed a step outside the building. People can get view of out side activities of building from inside also get view of sabarmati river.
A Picture Window • The concept of the slit window is of the lie painting. • The site is located in the middle of the city, with the old city of ahmedabad on one side(east) which represents the history of the city and on the other side, the new and modern part of the city(west.) • Through the picture window, activities of the new and old city can be visualized.

Textile Museum & Research Center, Ahmedabad Urban Study and Urban Insert in City of Ahmedabad
This studio was about studying a city of Ahmedabad through a central belt throughout the city
which covers entire character of Ahmedabad city. We were supposed to work on a particular patch of this belt which was Kalupur Railway Station to Soni ni chali cross roads whose characteristic features are the old textile mills. Ahmedabad is a largest city of Gujarat state and also economical capital of state. Ahmedabad has a great history and also an evolution towards modern architecture. Ahmedabad was called as ‘Manchester of India’. I have proposed a Textile museum, an urban insert to the city as a memorial of old textile mills and Research center to promote small textile business which are presently running in the same city

Mass Housing, Rajkot L.I.G. And M.I.G. Housing
Rajkot is the forth largest city in Gujarat and most important city of
the Saurastra region. It acts as an industrial ,economic and educational hub of the region. When Industrial area develops, the city is bound to grow. As the industries grow, it will need employees who will run the industries and this employees need houses to dwell in. A house becomes a dwelling, only when the inhabitant is free to choose the way he wants to live in the house and not the other way round. As dwelling becomes dense, there are more shared spaces.
As dwelling size increases, spaces originate with a specific function.
User group The location of site itself has some characteristics which determine potential user group it will house. Dwelling size No. Of members Family structure

Site area is around 1.7 hq. Density: 1200 people/ hq. No. Of Efficient dwelling : 260 -270. No. Of Comfort dwelling : 170 -180. The site is located near Mavdi village, which is off 150 ring road. It is located on the edge of a major road which will act as a connector to the two ring road in future. It is surrounded by two other secondary road and a school on other side. The area has major residential character , having small shops of daily requirements and few small scale industries. Major city level amenities such as police station , fire station , hospital and etc. are located within 1km radius of the site. Both the major industrial areas of Rajkot, Metoda and Shapar are located within 15km radius of the site.

Unit Level Built Environment
In this type of dwelling unit, most of the interactions happen from the kitchens. People share various things and also have conversations wile carrying out their activities in their kitchens. In Rajkot, it is very important to have connectivity during the times when the activities take place in the kitchens. So visual connectivity was one of the criteria for the organization of spaces and units.
Connectivity of kitchen and Organization of other spaces

Related Study Programe R.S.P.-2 (Wadhwan) and R.S.P.-3 (Morvi) R.S.P. - 3 L.E. College of Engineering, Morbi (Gujarat) Morbi is a major city in saurastra region (Gujarat) and it has a rich history and heritage. Third R.S.P. is for understating importance and placement of public buildings in their immediate domains in city structure. We have documented and analyzed L.E. College of engineering, which was a king’s palace before. Spaces are designed as palace but later it is converted in engineering college. It’s a huge structure and elevation drawing is at below.

R.S.P. - 2 N.K. Haveli, Wadhwan (Gujarat) Wadhwan is small town of Surendranagar district in Gujarat state. It is a fortified town and it has 6 doors and one window. It’s very old town of Gujarat and famous for Bandhani (Traditional cloth). Second R.S.P. mandate was to understand the complexity in culture and its manifestation in Architecture. We documented and study a Haveli (Large Scale House) of old businessman (vaniya). I have drafted this isometric column (wooden) and study its details. Section
