02 URBAN AGRICULTURE LEARNING CENTER COMMERCIAL PROJECT, SAMUTPRAKARN

URBAN AGRICULTURE LEARNING CENTER Site:

Scale: Type:

Pak Nam sub-district Samutprakarn, Thailand 18,080 m² (11.3 rai) Commercial Project

According to CRS project, The Trust foundation purposes to make a long rectangle-shaped area become the public space where can provide high benefit not only for the foundation but also for communities and urban people that tend to be main users in the future. This area has a potential to develop. It's juxtaposed to the nipa palm viewed canal on the west and the accessible main road on the east. However, brackish water in canal changes soil in the area into saline soil which is a constraint for land use and planting design.

Design concept The concept emphasizes the mixed-use space which is suitable for local and urban people's lifestyle. Therfore the area is developed to be "Urban agriculture learning center". It will be a place for learning about urban farming that people are able to do by themselves, a stage for playing and performance, a market for buying and selling organic products and a space for gathering. Moreover, this area will give a chance for local people to have a jobs like shopkeeper, officer, urban farmer and gardener. Aart school and kids vegetable garden This area is in center of the site which is accessible and peaceful. Most selected plants are edible evergreen tree and toddy palm to give shade and sense of rural field to people.

THE BORDERLESS PARK

Site: Scale: Type:

Public space near Prachuab bay, Beach Road, Koh lak Subdistrict, Amphur Muang, Prachuab khirikhan, Thailand 55,186 m² (34.5 rai) Public space

The mayor and municipal council of Prachuab city planed to make Prachuab khiri khan become the lively city that can improve livelihood of Prachuab citizen and be one of the most tourist attractive city. The beachfornt public park has potential to be the pilot project. It's been a public park in which local people uasually came to exercise, played sports, met each other, organized events and joined the festival or buddhism ceremony for many years. As time passes, all facilities and structures in the park were degraded and misused. Most areas in the site facilitated only some groups or some ages. Therefore users in the park are obviously not diverse and tend to be decreasing. The design concept is to develop this park to be the "BORDERLESS" park. The flexible and universal design can encorage various group of people to use and decrease the gap between ages. Moreover, the long-shaped area is turned into the green connector between people, the city and natural environment.

Songkanong sub-district, Bang krachao island, Phra pradaeng district, Samutprakarn, Thailand 132,500.19 m² (120 rai) Public park renovation project Group researh project

Bang krachao, known as "The green lung", is a large island in Samutprakarn. Chao Phraya river curving around the island about 18 km makes its shape similar to the horseshoe (or pig stomach). This area is a floodplain where is adjacent to an estuary of the Chao Phraya river. Therefore, the morphology is influenced by flood and sea tides which also characterises Bang krachao island to brackish ecology. For many years, local people had simple livelihood in Bang krachao. They widely work as a agriculturist and knew all native plants by passing on wisdoms from from generation to generation. Nowaday, Bang krachao is facing to urbanization problems from surrounding areas that cause people to change their way of life. Therefore, the local authority had visions to sustainably improve the life quality of local people as well as conserve and increase areas for native plants and animals in Bang krachao. According to the development plan of Songkanong sub-district 2016-2018, His majesty the king's 80 birthday anniversary park is one of green areas in Bang krachao that has potential to be a place to encourage local people to realize the value of thire own treasures and wisdoms. Furthermore, It can be a natural education place for both local people and urban people with the outstanding scenery and native plants in the area.

Design concept Site existing element

08 WET-DRY MARSH DYNAMIC RECLAIMATION, NHONGDAE THESIS: ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION PROJECT, UDONTHANI

WET-DRY MARSH DYNAMIC RECLAIMATION, NHONGDAE Site:

Scale: Type:

Kudsa sub-district, Amphoe Muang (Udonthani city), Udonthani, Thailand 1,345,760 m² (841.1 rai) Ecosystem restoration project

Local community way of life intertwined with goods and products from natural wetland dynamics. Wetland degradation occurred throughout Thailand north-eastern region due to rapid urban expansion threaten and changed local communities. “Nhongdae” is one of the degraded wetland in the fringe of Udonthani, rapidly developing province in North-eastern Thailand. This site is a shallow basin, seasonal freshwater marsh, which is dominant type of wetland scatter in the region. This highly productive landscape is influenced by dynamic of water level. It is a natural storm water catchment area and became a 3-4 months lake in rainy season, dry out and became utilizable land in drought season. The wet-dry landscape characters provided biodiversity richness and lift of the land benefits for local community. Nhongdae was excavated by local government in attempt to turn the wetland in to water retention basin. The wetland thus loss natural water dynamics, the water level has changes drastically and can no longer provide support for local communities.

Isan region topography

The project site is in Udonthani, which is one of provinces in the northeastern region of Thailand (well known as Isan). Isan region roughtly has a plateau terrain. It consists of two basin seperated by Phu Phan mountains: the southern Khorat basin is drained by the Mun and Chi rivers, while the northern Sakon Nakhon basin is drained by the Khong and Songkhram rivers. In primitive period, Isan land used to be underneath the ocean. The alternate rising and falling of the sea created layers of salt deposits, clay and Potash. Therefore, the soil in Isan is mostly sandy, with substantial salt deposits. According to the plate tectonic theory, the faults plate movement raised high lands up till the sea tide could no longer flood the land inside. Furthermore, this process eventually formed the terrain to plateau and basin characteristic by bending and pressing.

The creation of rock salt layers in Isan region

Huay Lhuang watershed covering areas of Udonthani and Nhong kai provinces has Huay Lhuang (Lhuang creek) as a major creek. The origin upstream of this creek is mainly from Huay lhuang dam. Besides, each marsh wetlands scattering in the watershed is headwater by itself.

The creation of wetland basin

In small area Rock salt layers was pressed by faults plate movement. It gradually bent up and became a salt dome. A great volume of accumulated rain on surface dissolved salt on the top layer and caused a land subsidence. A land was widened and deepened from collapse, then it finally became a retention basin.

Seasonal water dynamic

Marsh wetland landscape function

Marsh wetland ecosystem servieces Former Isan people truely understand seasons, times and changes of nature. Therefore, they could adapt their way of life to natural dynamic and make use of wetland resources for subsistence. In dry season, the water level extremely decreased and turned some marsh area into dry land. This wide land usually be used as a temporary ranch, wild fighting fish hunting field, annual plants field and recreation space by local villagers around the wetland. When rainy season came, a high water level change the dry land to a marsh land again. Local people normally knew it is fish spawning season, so they avoided catching fish in a marsh area where is a habitat and nursery for aqutic animals and collected red water lily, reed and floating plants spreadingly grow in an open water area instead. A water level gradually stop increasing in November. This time people would be able to collect a plenty of fish by a square dip net in the wetland.

Concept and solution To reclaim the wetland the project studied hydrological pattern and proposed water flow management to mimicked that of the natural. Reintroduced the wet-dry edge highly productive landscape dynamic. These two major efforts are to revive the wetland. For a natural element to last and stay function in the ever-expanding city is to make people realized the values. Education trails and water adaptive recreation area were designed according to the natural dynamic.
