Harry & The Gondolas
Mélanie Pain
A three-piece alternative folk band bringing a selection of raw, foot-stomping songs infused with dynamic harmonies and bubbly bass lines. Comprising of Harry Gould on lead vocals and guitar, Bubba Eriksonon on bass, and Samuel Snell on the cajón, percussion and backing vocals, Bristol’s Harry & The Gondolas are beginning to gain the attention of the UK folk scene. After a highly successful release of their debut single No Country For Old Men, their follow-up EP Agnate, and their new single released in February, Peter’s Orchid, Harry & The Gondolas are establishing themselves as a driven, creative and versatile new folk outfit. They’ve been selected as one of four hotly-tipped up-and-comings to play Thatchers Haze Sessions next month at The Passenger Shed, along with Little Comets and Bristol’s Elder Island and Eva Lazarus. Ahead of the show, front man Harry answers our 10 questions.
French electro pop singer Mélanie Pain hits The Fleece this month for one of only four UK dates as part of her new album tour for her third album, Parachute. Mélanie has been a regular vocalist with French new wave cover band Nouvelle Vogue since 2004, as well as releasing three solo albums, My Name, Bye Bye Manchester and lasts year’s Parachute. Singing in both French and English, she cites her influences as including Sonic Youth, the Smiths, Pixies, PJ Harvey, and Nick Drake. Leaving behind the folk-pop influences of her first album, Parachute explores a more mature, classical sound with catchy electropop beats. The album is entirely piano-based, making the deliberate choice to not record any guitar. If you’ve yet to witness the beauty of a Mélanie Pain gig, prepare to be transported to another time and place.

HAZE SESSIONS PRESENTS LOCAL TALENT
ELDER ISLAND
Since the release of their second EP Seeds in Sand last year, live electro outfit Elder Island have shot to the top of several ones-to-watch lists and were recently invited to play at the talent-unearthing institution Sofar Sounds, which took place in Bristol last month, and who have previously caught the likes of James Bay, George Ezra and Bastille on their way to achieving number 1 albums. The trio from Bristol have also been selected as one of four breakthrough artists to perform at Thatchers Haze Sessions in Bristol this month. The lineup has been handpicked by BoomTown Fair’s head of programming, Kaptin Barrett, who also invited Newcastle indie-rockers Little Comets and Bristol’s Eva Lazarus & the Afronauts and Harry & the Gondolas to join the party. Elder Island’s sound could be placed somewhere between The XX, Mount Kimbie and Maribou State, but with a more classic approach to songwriting, vocals and live instrumentation – and a variety of other inspirations seeping in from across the board. Initially experimenting with a more folky sound, Elder Island’s members Katy, David and Luke say that they got their musical education and eventual sound direction from going out in Bristol. ‘Me and Katie came to Bristol together for uni,’ says David. ‘And me and Luke have known each other for years. Luke
was in Wales, but he would stay in Bristol at our house a lot. Although it wasn’t until after uni that we really started playing music.’ In fact, Katy had kept her musical talents relatively quiet until that point. Having learned cello at school, she picked it back up and began practising in the bathroom of their shared house. ‘Me and David used to be in bands together and so we played a lot together,’ says Luke. ‘When I would come over, we’d get Katy to bring the cello and get her to sing. Then Katy came up with a song or two and it went from there. We just used to mess around recording and tinkering – and then more tinkering, and more tinkering until we were like, “this is cool.”’ ‘Coming from Bournemouth, a town that didn’t really have a music scene, to Bristol, which has a big nightlife and big electronic scene was an education,’ says David. ‘We were going out to all the early dubstep nights as it was starting out, dub nights like Teachings in Dub, house, disco and techno nights, and lots of bands – so all of that has kind of bled into our music tastes.’ ‘We’ve always bought hugely into music,’ says Luke. ‘Buying records and DJing all the time – you just pick up those influences of what you love to make a melting pot of inspiration. Music is so accessible now, and when there’s three minds listening to three different things...
‘We used to be really folky,’ he continues. ‘It was around the time that Laura Marling was really big. It wasn’t until four years ago, when we started learning production – how to use software, how to record, and investing in little bits of gear that we developed the sound we have now.’ ‘As soon as Jamie XX released a solo album,’ says David. ‘That whole generation of the post-dubstep electronic scene – Mount Kimbie, James Blake – that’s what got us into experimenting with synths and production, instead of just using real instruments.’
We’ve got a live band approach, but with electronics. However, live instruments are still a major building block of their sound and one of the things that makes their live performance so sensational. Katy, David and Luke try and take us through a typical live set up – ‘I’ve got my cello, a looper for the cello, which also manipulates the sound, and then I’ve got my TC-Helicon, which does voice manipulation and looping. But compared to these guys, that’s relatively simple!’ says Katy.
LOCAL TALENT // 29
The group has several major shows booked for the summer; as well as their Haze Sessions show next month at Passenger Shed, they’ve also got a main stage slot at Love Saves the Day, plus appearances at Farmfest and Boomtown Fair later in the summer.
That whole generation of the postdubstep electronic scene – Mount Kimbie, James Blake – that’s what got us into experimenting with synths and production. Asked whether they’re feeling the pressure, Katy says: ‘No, it’s just exciting. I think we’re ready for it.’
‘Everything is in sync with each other,’ says David. ‘There’s no backing track – everything is played. Drum machines and samplers are manipulated live, so we can actually play against it and build loops. We keep layering it and adding new elements in. So there is nothing that’s set – if one of us just steps back, everything stops.’
who has been pumping their track Bamboo out on his BBC Radio 1 show.
‘It’s all about timing,’ says Luke. ‘And the timing often goes wrong! There’s three of us playing, but when we’re looping it’s like there’s six of us playing. Dave plays the guitar and the keys – so he’s playing the synthesizer, the piano and the guitar. I’m doing all of the drums and then I’m doing the bass as well. And Katie’s doing the vocals and cello.’
‘We’ve got a live band approach, but with electronics,’ says David. ‘So instead of being a producer sat at a computer, we have that set up of pure hardwear, but we play it like a live instrument.’
While no doubt a technical feat, the end material stands up all on its own. Their rapturously-received Seeds in Sand EP has caught the attention of tastemakers including Huw Stephens,
As an organically-formed band, playing all their own instruments and handling their own production, their process can be chaotic, they say.
Luke adds: ‘And when it comes to writing a song, it will come from some sort of frenzy of jamming that goes on for half an hour. And we’ll think: right, we really love that, how do we make it three-and-a-half minutes long? Then when it comes to producing it, it can change again…’
‘We’ve got a really great team behind us,’ says Luke. ‘Which makes a really big difference. Before, we just had one person and the idea of something big was there, but nothing was really happening. We were putting in as much effort as we possibly could… But now we’ve got a team behind us.’ Elder island were snatched up by Metropolis Recordings for their 2016 Seeds in Sand EP, which comes out on vinyl this month on time for Record Store Day. Fans can also keep their ears to the ground for two brand new tracks from Elder Island, due for release this summer.

Recognised for dominating the radio airwaves since the late 70s and picking up cups across the world in sound clash tournaments, this award-winning broadcaster has more than a tale or two to tell. Hosted by Bristol bass enthusiasts The Blast, Rodigan joined DJ and radio presenter/producer Tayo for a special Q&A session at Colston Hall, followed by an intimate dublate set from his vintage collection in The Lantern, with DJ sets from Smith & Mighty and The Blast DJs. Sitting on a sofa on the main stage, with a vinyl player placed on a nearby coffee table, Rodigan took the audience back to the moment he first heard Millie Small’s My Boy Lollipop, sparking his love for reggae as a young boy, right through to the moment he bumped into Bob Marley in a stairwell, which later landed him an interview and an exclusive first-ever play of Marley’s, Could You Be Loved on his Capital FM radio show. The reggae legend was at home sharing anecdotes, whilst giving the audience a whistle stop tour of some of his favourite dub and reggae anthems. The crackle and pop
as he played a King Tubby cut dubplate brought emphasis to the rarity of the records audience members were now witnessing, and the award-winning broadcaster’s passion that accompanied each record played brought the music to life as it vibrated across the hall.
I don’t know what it is about dub music, but it seems to turn on younger people more than older people. Before the show, Nitelife was lucky enough to grab a few words from the MBE-awarded DJ moments before he set foot on stage. ‘I’d have to say the best chapter of my life began when I started working in radio. Even though I have loved doing theatre and television work as an actor, radio enabled me to
meet the stars of the music I had admired for so many years. I was getting high on my own supply, so to speak. ‘My first trip to Jamaica in January 1979, after being on air for five months, was a very special time for me. To be honest, my initial period in radio as a whole was incredibly exciting and rewarding, because no sooner had I started broadcasting, I found myself in Jamaica meeting music legends.’ Reggae music has been the heart and soul of Rodigan’s life from a young age, he could often be found at his local record store, checking out the latest 45s. ‘Reggae speaks for the people and it always has done. When I say the people, I mean from all walks of life. I think one of the greatest reggae songs to touch my soul is Feeling Soul by Bob Andy. It’s about being true to one another, being kind and gentle to each other and giving your best when it is asked of you. That song spoke to me personally and I know it has spoken to millions of other people as well. ‘If we look at the repertoire of Bob Marley alone, never mind Bunny Wailer or The Abyssinians, there’s a passion and a soul in these recordings that you cannot help but be touched by, in my opinion. When you hear this music for the first time,

the lyrics, the melodies, the sweetness of harmonies, and the beautiful production, it’s difficult not to be moved by it. ‘That’s what happened to me and so many other people worldwide. This music touches people’s souls – that’s what it does.’
Reggae speaks for the people and it always has done. As Rodigan reflected back on how reggae music changed his life, he observed how the UK sound system culture, that’s now championed by a younger generation as well as its veterans, continues to thrive. ‘Bass-driven music has always played a major part in people’s lives. Dub music, for one reason or another, has led to drum and bass, then dubstep and, again now seems to be even more popular with young people.
‘I don’t know what it is about dub music, but it seems to turn on younger people more than older people. It certainly turned me on, too. I think there is a wonderful direct heritage that stretches back to the late fifties, not just here in Bristol, but in other major cities where West Indians came to live and brought their music and culture with them. Because it is a passionate music form, I think it is inevitable that if you’re given the opportunity to hear it in context on a sound system, where people are appreciating the music, it’s going to be difficult to not become excited by it. ‘I know this to be true with young people, because I see the looks on their faces at festivals when they see somebody like me, who is old enough to be their dad or grandad, playing these songs and responding to them.’ For over 40 years, David Rodigan has been one to look to for new music, so it was only right to ask as our conversation came to an end; who’s on the DJ’s radar this year? ‘I would definitely say you need to listen out for Chronixx, he
is an incredibly gifted songwriter with some very refreshing views about the world. He’s got a new album coming out with a reggae and gospel fusion. His comments on gospel music were very touching when I interviewed him last year in Jamaica. It was a real eye opener to hear the things he said in connection with gospel music and what it meant to him as a young boy.’ To hear more stories from the iconic reggae selector, be sure to pick up his book Rodigan: My Life In Reggae. It’ll be a struggle to put it down.

MUNGO’S HI FI THEKLA
A well-seasoned name upon the British dancehall scene, Mungo’s Hi Fi’s music conjures images of blistering beaches and wild Caribbean carnival parties on the white sands of Jamaica. However, the Glasgow-based collective have been making mad sounds around the UK and in Bristol since the turn of the millennium, gathering momentum and a diehard fan base. Mungo’s Hi Fi will be returning to Bristol for a DJ set at Thekla’s Fiesta Bombarda party on 21 April for an evening of carnival-inspired carnage and dancehall drama to celebrate the release of some new summer sounds from the group. Influenced by the roots of traditional reggae and dub, the boys wanted to keep in theme with tradition and crafted their very first sound system from a vintage Atari and speakers found in a skip. Although they won’t be bringing
their famous sound system along with them this time, they’ll have no trouble setting the dance floor alight. With a laid-back and time-crafted sound, taking major influences from traditional island sounds, Mungo’s place their own spin on Caribbean dancehall and dub with fiery dubplates and catchy mix-ups. The group already has five albums currently under their belts and there will be no stopping the dynamic collective getting people moving this summer, with a string of new releases imminent. Although when asked exactly what to expect from the group in the near future, Mungo’s Craig Macleod laughs and taps his nose, ‘You’ll have to come down to our show! We have a load of exciting new mixes dropping, including a brand new collaborative single coming out in April. Expect to be hearing a lot from our
label Scotch Bonnet too. We’ve got a lot of sounds lined up and ready to drop. Watch this space – it’s going to be loud!’ With a discography including massive collaborations and remixes including Major Lazer, General Levy, Congo Natty and Ranking Joe, to name only a few, Mungo’s operate as a core five-piece collaborative unit with a constant flow of new vocalists and MCs to take the spot on the microphone. Firmly cemented into the reggae/roots scene, Mungo’s have a fiercely loyal fanbase that are sure to be found two-stepping and lapping up the organic sounds of the collective on the dance floor at their shows. Combining a sharp sense of history, a wicked creativity and some crazily catchy riddims, Mungo’s are keen to keep making fire on the decks this summer with a killer lineup of shows, gigs

and festivals in both national and international waters. Expect to see them hitting Outlook and Dimensions in Croatia, Uprising festival in Slovakia and Reggae Sun Ska festival in France, alongside dates in and around the UK. Their Glasgow-based label Scotch Bonnet, toting the slogan ‘skanking since 2005’, also continues to generate heat, pumping out piles of dubplates, hot new reggae riddims and collaborations since the mid-noughties. Founded by Mungo’s Hi Fi, the Scottish label also features sub-label Scrub a Dub that heavily features bass music over the mainline reggae focus. With a growing fan base and a backlogged queue of featured collaborators, Scotch
Expect exclusive new tunes, dubplates, remixes and some hot party vibes. Back to their Bristol show, Craig says: ‘We’re really excited to play Thekla again. It’s going to be a big party! Expect exclusive new tunes, dubplates, remixes and some hot party vibes. We love playing in Bristol, our sound really connects with the city and the people. We’ve played at several of the venues over the years and really feel that the Mungo’s sound and vibe fits perfectly into the city of
Bristol. We are all about pushing forward with new sounds, but also never forgetting where you come from, much like the roots and reggae influences in the Bristol sound.’ It’s appropriate then that the evening’s carnival vibes will be supported by Bristol’s own Gardna, whose huge tune Sunday (produced by Kreed) was one of the anthems of last summer. Working again with Kreed, their new joint EP has just dropped, so expect to hear tunes from that, plus more bangers from his dubwise-heavy back catalogue. There’s also a yet-to-be-announced second headliner, plus all the fun of a typical Fiesta Bombarda event, with immersive carnival-themed décor, performers and face painting.

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH
MIKE SHAWE Mike Shawe Job title: Collector-selector at Hot Buttered Soul
In a nutshell, what is Hot Buttered Soul? Hot Buttered Soul is an underground night pulling on the sound of lesser-known 70s and 80s cuts through to the present day, encompassing a diverse selection of new edits, embracing the sounds of afro and gospel through to more electronic-based disco and house – and even the odd techno tune. If you come to one of our nights you can expect to hear an eclectic mix of tunes with one or two surprises thrown in. Can you run us through a quick history of your DJ career, culminating in the Hot Buttered Soul nights? I grew up in a family that loved to play records – Philly soul, disco and funk. My dad was a jazz head, which also had a big influence on my taste. My nightlife roots are in the St Pauls ‘blues’ parties and basement jams of the mid-80s, and my residency at Sanborn’s club on Prince Street with one of my mentors, Paul Morrissey.
What was it that made you start the whole thing? To unearth the musical gems of my past and combine them with the new productions of today. There’s some amazing music being produced now that borrows heavily from the music of my youth. To play both the old and new creates a diverse sound that appeals to people who experienced it first time around, through to young audiences who just love what they hear.
Be in it for the love of the music – it’s as simple as that. What does a typical day look like for you? Working my day job on the railway, listening to new releases and hunting down old tunes, misspending hours on social media, planning future events and
B.A.D. Radio, Bristol’s first pirate station, had a big influence on my early career, where I did a weekly soul and rare groove show alongside people like DJ Lynx, Deli G, The Soul Twins – far too many to mention. The idea behind HBS came from the desire to recreate the underground vibe of those early soul, boogie and rare groove nights of the 80s with an emphasis on the rarer and unknown tracks that many people may not have been exposed to. HBS started out about nine years ago at The Park Bar on The Triangle in Clifton, moving on to The Bank, The
B.A.D. Radio, Bristol’s first pirate station, had a big influence on my early career. Gallimaufry, The Big Chill Bar, The Love Inn, Oslo Soul Weekender, Liverpool Disco Festival... Basically wherever the vibe took me. I currently hold down a busy monthly residency at The Plough Inn alongside good friends Soulworks and promote Hot Buttered Soul’s own events at various venues, booking guest DJs that excite and inspire me.
promoting current ones, chilling with my family – my partner Rachel and daughter Nevina – or training for my black belt in Lan Gar Kung Fu. You’re often described as a DJ and record collector – what separates the two? Anyone can collect vinyl, but, with the risk of sounding cocky, you need a good ear to seek out and find great music. Understanding how to work a dance floor and crowd are the key to success when DJing. Programming is paramount, good mixing is the icing on the cake, and dropping the right tune at the right time can literally take the roof off!
insane crowds every weekend alongside some of the worlds finest DJs. Low point – getting totally wasted after free-pouring tequila at a wig party, then drunkenly tripping over behind the decks. I proceeded to crash out in a broom cupboard, only to wake up after the club had closed, freezing cold, minus my wig, to the sound of the cleaner hoovering the dance floor... my record boxes nowhere to be seen. True. What can people expect at a Hot Buttered Soul night? Party people, positive energy, friendly vibes, fantastic music and a hot and sweaty packed dance floor all night long. What do you make of the so-called disco revival over the last few years? Musical genres are cyclical, so it was only a matter of time before it happened. But it’s a good thing and has given recognition to artists that may have been forgotten. It’s also sparked a lot of creativity with hundreds of fresh new edits and musical productions that pay homage to the past but also with an eye on the future, which is pretty much the ethos of HBS. Collaborations seem to be an important element of Hot Buttered Soul nights – why is that? Playing alongside fellow DJs brings a plethora of fresh music, different styles and personality to the night. For me, it’s a shared experience, swapping musical tips, hot new records, rare finds, and watching how other DJs work a dance floor. I am constantly inspired by others and am always learning. Can you give a word of advice to people wanting to follow a similar path? Be true to yourself and your own particular style. Practice and hone your craft. Be in it for the love of the music – it’s as simple as that. What gives you the drive to keep doing it each day? A pure and simple passion for the music I love - wanting to share it with others, the friendships, buying new records (the next one is always the best), the good times and smiling faces on the dance floor all make every second I’ve invested worthwhile.
What is the best thing about your job? Playing the music I love is never a chore. Worst thing? When the bouncer calls time and the lights come up! Do you have a pinnacle, career-highlight moment? Highlight was probably being the resident DJ at Lakota during the halcyon days of house in the 90s, playing to
