Frontier Ruckus
Res One is one of Bristol’s hardest working hip hop MCs. Part of the Split Prophets Collective, they have been pushing the underground UK hip hop scene since the release of their Scribbled Thoughts EP in 2011. They’ve supported the likes of Wu Tang, KRS One, MF Doom and are one of the biggest and most respected hip hop crews on the circuit. As a solo artist, Res One has tallied countless collaborations and several solo releases, including his Delph Efficacy album in 2015. The prolific MC is gearing up to release his latest project, a collaborative album with hip hop producer Illinformed, A Dogs Dream. A Dogs Dream is released this October on Res One’s brand new imprint Green Brick Records – another collaborative project, this time with Split Prophets’ Bad Habitz. They’ll be celebrating with a massive launch party at The Fleece, with a slew of old friends including Split Prophets, Babylon Dead, Creatures Of Habit, Jay0117 and many more. Before that, Res One will be warming up with the Hip Hop Coffee Shop open mic crew at Boston Tea Party on Stokes Croft this September.
Indie-leaning folk pop outfit Frontier Ruckus are coming to Bristol’s Canteen all the way from Detroit, as part of a European tour to promote their fifth studio album Enter The Kingdom. Helmed by singer songwriter Matthew Milia, Enter The Kingdom draws on his own life experiences – his father losing his job and relying on disability cheques, the disintegration of the American dream and growing up in the 90s. Country-laden folk music surrounds Millia’s melodious lyricism, that pays tribute to noughties US indie heroes like Death Cab for Cutie. Matthew answers our 10 questions...

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? I learned that Cornish pasties have a crusty edge so that miners with poisonous dirt on their hands could eat the pasty and throw the crusty edge away. Kinda like Stokes Croft.
5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Skateboarding or something graffiti related.
2. Favourite track of all time? I’ve got too many to say, but the one that came to my head as I wrote this was What Estate are you From? by Reveal. That’s the UK favourite that came to mind, but actually all time favourite is Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club.
7. Favourite thing on TV? People Just Do Nothing is one of the best recent shows out. This Country is amazing as well. Any Gordon Ramsey shit.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? If people are tripping out or on that vibe, I’ll put on Venus in Furs by Velvet Underground – that song is the one. Maybe if people are just sobering up, I’ll put on some Jay Rock or some selection. It’s all down to the surroundings. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Brothers of the Stone, Conway and Westside Gunn/ GXFR, and obviously Split Prophets and everyone who is a part of Green Brick Records. It’s hard to say because there are so many sick crews out there. Cheese and Bread are doing bits too.
6. What was the last book you read? Collins English Dictionary
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? If I rub the inside of my cat’s ear she really likes to lick my finger. I’m also finding new evidence every day that the pressing need for relevance was more of a young man’s disease and that’s a wonderfully liberating discovery. 2. Favourite track of all time? Something about Northern Sky by Nick Drake can really sneak up on me on an unassuming fall day.
8. Are you afraid of anything? Friends and family passing away.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Maybe Laid by James?
9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I like to sit down in the shower...Sometimes. Also I’m a UK size 12 – send me some shoes!
4. Who are your top three acts right now? I’m a Teenage Fanclub fanboy. I dig Parquet Courts, but it really just makes me want to listen to Pavement.
10. What are you doing tomorrow? Hopefully still being alive, doing what I love.
5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Hopefully finding the focus to write a novel.
@Res.One.Sp // @greenbrickrecords
6. What was the last book you read? I like to read multiple books simultaneously for balance, most recently: Graham Greene – The End of the Affair and Cormac McCarthy – The Road. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Mad Men, Twin Peaks, Frasier. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Home invasion. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... My favourite pastime is playing soccer, or football as I wish we called it here. I was the leading scorer this year for my Detroit neighbourhood team The Corktown Pheasants (named after the wild pheasants that roam around more deserted parts of Detroit). 10. What are you doing tomorrow? We’re heading up to play a couple of leisurely shows in vacation towns of Michigan’s beautiful northern parts —mostly as an excuse to swim in Lake Michigan and run around these huge sand bluffs they call the Sleeping Bear Dunes.

For five years they’ve been gurgling, stomping and shrieking their fuzzy alt-rock grunge around Bristol; now their four track debut EP Faces, finished back in January, is a honed capsule of their sound, teetering on the verge of release. Bassist Kerry explains: ‘We wanted to take our time over it to refine our sound and put songs together that we’re really happy with. Tracks on the EP – America and She Goes Her Own Way – were written back in 2012 ‘before No Violet was No Violet, when [guitarist] Rhys and [singer] Ellie were just jamming together’ and the band were a mere ‘twinkle in their eye’. Since then they’ve gained a reputation for their arresting live set, supporting the likes of Dream Wife and Yonaka;
gained praise from BBC Radio 6; and critically, have caught the attention of local label Leisure Records – signing them last year and supporting their upcoming European tour. Back last year, their menacing and wild Petty Child couldn’t have been released at a better time – with IDLES spurring the way for a flood of alt-rock bands from Bristol. No Violet together with the likes of Heavy Lungs, Spectres, Soeur and others, bolstered Bristol’s reputation for gnarly guitar music. This said, No Violet feel no pressure with the release, explaining: ‘It’s our first EP, establishing who we are rather than having to live up to who we’ve been for the last few years’. It’s an introduction and a neat reflection of their expansive sound – from prog to punk and hypnotic grunge,
they’re keen to keep the mixture alive and stay genuine, following whatever feeling they have and using music to capture each phase along the way.
There are a lot of frustrating things in the world that you can’t do anything about (...) So I have to just slam something out

This free, punk attitude has been with them since inception. Kerry explains that their early desire was to just ‘get out and play lots of live shows, see what we liked and didn’t like and spend time getting used to each other’. The challenge now is to keep this living, breathing energy on the recording. As we chat, Rhys describes their determination to keep it ‘raw... rough and ready’, his enthusiasm inspiring a loving snigger from Ellie, as he goes on to describe their recording process: ‘we recorded as a whole band, with minimal dubs and overlays. It sounds quite polished because our producer Benjamin Johnson did a great job, but musically it’s not more than what we do live. We’re not the kind of band that will bring along lots of backing tracks when we play, or set things off with a click of a Macbook…’ Drummer Pete disagrees: ‘Just you wait. Second EP, get ready for a new synth-pop direction’. To which Rhys retorts ‘Nah, keep it real’, inspiring another giggle from Ellie. Even with the re-recorded song America, which was first released last year, the aim was to keep a natural live energy. With the help of producer Ben and a replenishing supply of coffee, the track was seen with fresh eyes. ‘We were aware it didn’t sound like it did when we released it last year’ says Rhys ‘but he made us play it incredibly fast, incredibly slow, and we moulded it into something better in the end.’ Kerry adds: ‘He made us detach from the old version, so we saw it as a new piece of work.’ Their approach to songwriting breeds from the same regard for immediacy – songs sometimes springing from a jam as they’re setting up for practice – with a jam version of America even becoming a proud B-side. This was played on BBC Radio Wales by Adam Walton, much to the surprise of everyone, including the self-confessed non-jam-fan himself, and with Ellie pointing out ‘it’s 6 minutes long - that’s not a radio song!’ When it comes to the lyrics, Ellie is a lone writer, with some tracks vulnerable and self-reflective about insecurities, with Kerry picking up the sitar to sink into the more mesmeric sides of their sound on the acoustic version of She Goes Her Own Way. Meanwhile, other tracks have a clear vexation that drives the songs as a kind of outcry. Ellie explains: ‘There
are a lot of frustrating things in the world that you can’t do anything about and you’re just watching it and thinking, why is this happening? It eats away at you a little bit. Or it has been for me anyway, really eating away. So I have to just slam something out.’ This is the steer of Be My Friend, a social comment on the turmoil of modern politics, combined with social media’s ability to make us feel simultaneously selfrighteous and isolated. With Ellie explaining she’s better at singing than talking, self-appointed interpreter Kerry goes on to state jokingly ‘this is how Ellie feels’ and then perceptively explains the premise behind the song: ‘There are all sorts of outrage on Facebook, but is anyone actually doing anything? You like it on Facebook and share it, but “are you going to be my friend?” or “are you gonna stand up for me?”. I don’t want to demonise social
media, it’s so easy to put the blame on something because its relatively new. There’s definitely a lot of power in social media and it’s helped a lot of movements, but it’s about starting those conversations and putting them in to action. Not just a like. To this, Pete responds: ‘If that was a Facebook status I would like it’. Ellie: ‘I would heart that, mate’ and Rhys: ‘And then keep scrolling…’
We’re not the kind of band that will bring along lots of backing tracks when we play, or set things off with a click of a Macbook No Violet are clearly good friends; meeting at uni, they’ve come together in their joined desire to play with Ellie. Kerry messaged her with the nonchalant ‘anything that you do, can I play on it?’ Meanwhile Pete asserts that his desire to play with Ellie had nothing to with music, going on to explain the mess he’s found himself in: ‘Before I knew it I was in your band...and now I’m here’. Various digs of playing the seriously long game ensue, with Pete’s frank agreement that the game has indeed been ‘longer than expected’. All this jovial jibbing should serve them well for their upcoming tour, hitting the road for three weeks with Bristol Math trio Chiyoda Ku, with four UK dates before launching off on a fully fledged European tour. Rolling on from this they’re creating and releasing new videos later in the year and even heading back in to the studio before Christmas. It’s an ambitious, whirlwind of a schedule and I ask if they’ve reached a kind of watershed with their career so far, gaining the confidence to just go for it. ‘We’ve been getting a good response, so it’s like...oh okay’ says Kerry. ‘We’ve got to the point where we’re like, let’s do this.’

MORCHEEBA
After a five year hiatus, Morcheeba are back with their new album Blaze Away and a massive world tour to boot, which will see them play at this year’s Tokyo World festival at Eastville Park on 22 and 23 September. They return without founding member Paul Godfrey, who departed in 2013, but their trademark mesh of influences from psychedelic rock to downtempo, hip hop, country and blues is most certainly intact and stunningly delivered by Skye Edwards and Ross Godfrey. Etched firmly into the soundscape of the mid-nineties, Morcheeba first appeared on our sonar with their debut album Who Can You Trust? in 1996, followed two years later with their seminal platinum-selling Big Calm. Morcheeba was formed after producer Paul and his multi instrumentalist brother Ross met vocalist Skye at a party in Greenwich. Ross and Paul had previously been working with another singer, but after hearing Skye’s magnetic voice, the trio began recording as Morcheeba in a new style adapted to Skye’s quieter, country-influenced vocals, combining a cluster of influences that often sees the band aligned with the South West trip hop movement. While there’s certainly a comparison
to be made, Morcheeba’s sound also sits outside of the early trip hop records by the likes of Massive Attack and Portishead. ‘We wanted the production to sound like Wu-Tang Clan, the songs to sound like Neil Young and the guitars to sound like Jimi Hendrix’ explains Ross. ‘It was a weird mixture. Part of the Process sounds like a country band with a hip hop beat and that felt quite different to the rest of the trip hop acts. I didn’t feel like anyone from the West Country was using country music, so I think we carved our own little niche within it and the songwriting stands out for itself. Wherever we go in the world, it’s quite funny because people always ask if we’re from Bristol.’ Skye agrees: ‘I didn’t really like the title of trip hop, as I felt our album was a little bit more than downtempo with hip hop beats and a female vocal. Certainly on Big Calm we had songs on there that had country and Western influences, psychedelic influences and rock and pop. So I’ve never felt that we really fitted into the trip hop genre, because I felt that the umbrella was much wider than that.’ ‘The sound came about naturally’ Ross continues ‘because I was really into acid rock and psychedelic – people like Jimi
Hendrix and also old blues music. My brother was really into hip hop – bands like New Kingdom and Wu-Tang. Skye’s voice was very soft and she was into country music and people like Nina Simone and Patsy Cline, so she made us have quite a mellow sound, because we couldn’t play heavy guitars over the top of her, because you wouldn’t be able to hear her.
We wanted the production to sound like Wu-Tang Clan, the songs to sound like Neil Young and the guitars to sound like Jimi Hendrix ‘There was a synchronicity, because there were a few other bands at the same time that had similar influences who were trying to do the same sort of thing. British people at the time couldn’t really rap, there was no rap scene, so people started making beats and writing songs over them. The Tricky record
PREVIEW // 33 the first couple of songs. I love performing and I love getting dressed up, I make the clothes that I wear on stage. I think people like to be entertained and I love being able to sing to people live and make that contact. We’ll keep making music as long as people will have us.’ As an album, as with their whole body of work, Blaze Away scales a multitude of genres and influences and delivers some excellent collaborations, including Roots Manuva on the title track and French singer Benjamin Biolay on Paris sur Mer. Skye elaborates: ‘We’ve got a pop song called It’s Summertime and a downtempo song called Never Undo. They’re both being played on the radio, though they don’t sound like everything else you hear on Radio One, which I think is a good thing.’
Roots Manuva brought a lot of mad energy that kicked everything up a gear On how the Roots Manuva collaboration came about, Skye explains: ‘We were playing a festival in Moscow and Roots Manuva was on the bill, so we stood by the side of the stage and jumped around watching him play. Afterwards, there was a really lovely smell coming from his dressing room so we went in and joined him. We said “you’re in London, we’re in London, let’s do a track together”. We exchanged numbers and took it from there.’
and Portishead record came about around the same time we were writing Who Can You Trust? ‘The music that I write with Skye’s voice has a lot to do with how people view the sound. It’s very natural. We don’t try to sound like Morcheeba, that’s just how we sound when we make music together.’
Paul is always going to be a massive part of Morcheeba, he’s written into the DNA of the sound of the band After Paul left the band in 2013, Ross and Skye continued making music together, releasing their Skye | Ross album in 2016. After buying Paul out of his share of the Morcheeba name, they returned to it for 2018’s Blaze Away. ‘We’ve been touring without Paul for about 10 or 15 years, so it’s been a really long transition’ Ross says. ‘Paul is always going
to be a massive part of Morcheeba, he’s written into the DNA of the sound of the band. The element that Paul brought that isn’t there is the DJ scratching and a large hip hop element, but we still have that as an influence, it’s just not as prominent as when Paul was working with us.’ Watching their set at Boomtown last month, they sound as much like Morcheeba as ever, with their new tracks sitting comfortably alongside classics like The Sea and Part of the Process. Skye, having made a slow and steady transition from vocalist to fully-fledged frontwoman since their first record, lit up the stage and seemed to be having as much fun performing as any fresh new act. ‘I don’t feel that we’re dated; our audience is a mix from people in their 70s right down to 17 year olds’ says Skye. ‘We’re still working, we’re still touring – this is the busiest year we’ve had in a long time. We’ve just done 50 shows and have 30 more to do. ‘It’s 2018, we’ve got a new album out and it feels good. I’ve always enjoyed singing on stage and my confidence has grown certainly in the last ten years. The first album that we toured in 1996, I was incredibly shy and I didn’t really get dressed up – I’d just wear trainers and a jacket round my waist and hold on to the mic for dear life. Over the years, I’ve got more confident at touring – once I get over my nerves after
‘Roots Manuva brought a lot of mad energy that kicked everything up a gear’ Ross adds. ‘Benjamin is a very classy songwriter so we are lucky to have him on the record’ says Ross. ‘I had the music for a while and wanted a French male singer to duet with Skye in a Gainsbourg/Birkin style fashion. Benjamin was our ideal collaborator and he brought an amazing amount of gravitas to the song and album. Amanda Zamolo, my wife, features on Mezcal Dream. She also sings in French, making it sound like a continental psychedelic classic.’ From its conception, Morcheeba has always been a family affair, beginning with the Godfrey brothers and now including members of Skye’s family too. Skye’s husband, Steve Gordon, who played bass on Fragments of Freedom, is their touring bass player, while their son Jaega plays the drums. ‘It is comfortable having people we love close by, but we also choose to play with them because they are great musicians’ Ross explains. When Morcheeba bring their live show to Tokyo World at the end of this month, Skye explains what we can expect: ‘We’ve got an amazing lighting designer and we play a mixture of songs from the first album and the new album, plus a David Bowie cover of Let’s Dance. We generally try and get people singing along and dancing and then mellow them out. We take them on a journey from 1996 all the way up to 2018.’

SKINNY PELEMBE
LOCAL TALENT // 41
New Brownswood recruit Skinny Pelembe makes his maiden voyage to Bristol this month with his new afro-tipped psychedelic soul EP, Sleep More, Make More Friends. Born in Johannesburg and raised in Doncaster, the vocalist, guitarist, singer and MC signed to Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings earlier this year, debuting with downtempo-meets-melodious masterpiece I’ll Be on Your Mind. It followed his 7 Year Curse EP, which he self released in 2017 on his Skinny’s Own imprint, while under the mentorship of Brownswood’s Future Bubblers talent development programme.
It’s a kind of therapy, so I need to do it rather than want to do it Brownswood have been continuing to help broadcast his skills and range throughout 2018, with more releases including the psychedelic Split / Swallow and boom bap heavy I Just Wanna Be Your Prisoner featuring Hejira, from the forthcoming EP. In a seemingly short time, things have skyrocketed for the singer-guitarist-producer, who just a few months ago supported Nightmares on Wax at the behest of Lauren Laverne. However, when people’s ears clap on to such a talent, word spreads quickly. Clearly technically adept, effortlessly transitioning between psychedelic rock grooves and classic hip hop cut ’n’ paste styles to create his own mellow sound, Skinny is also a natural creative – even to the point of writing in his sleep. ‘Once I’m happy with a beat, I put it on loop and go to sleep’ Skinny explains. ‘Hopefully when I wake up, it’s somehow seeped into my head. I’ll play guitar over the top of it, then usually get rid of the sample because I can’t afford it, and try and fill in the gaps. Then I’ll bring what I’ve got to the live band and try and incorporate a little bit of them into it as well – I’m trying to not be such a control freak any more! ‘Any time I have an idea, I lay it down straight away. It’s natural for me, because it’s the way I cope with everything. It’s a kind of therapy, so I need to do it rather than want to do it.’ This creativity transcends the music making process, with Skinny having shot most of his own music videos himself. Despite signing to a notable label with a budget behind them, Skinny shot his Brownswood debut I’ll Be on Your Mind using his Samsung Galaxy on a budget of £10.
‘Again, it’s the control freak in me’ he explains. ‘I don’t really want to hand things over to people, because all my songs are really personal and I feel a bit weird giving that vision to someone else and seeing what they do with it. That said, we’re currently filming the first video where I’m not all over the whole creative process, so I guess I’m learning to let go.’ He also takes charge of most of the track artwork, painting the cover for forthcoming EP, Sleep More, Make More Friends. ‘It’s a melted self portrait – which is kind of how I was feeling at the time’ he says. Known worldwide for embracing the experimental and groovier side of electronic music, Skinny Pelembe fits right into the Brownswood roster. On top of that, the approval of Gilles Peterson comes with a certain amount of kudos. ‘Working with Brownswood has given me more confidence to run with the ideas that I have. In the beginning, I thought some ideas would be seen as silly, but having the backing of people who I think are really cool saying “yeah go for it” is great. They’ve given me a lot of confidence and creative freedom. ‘On I’ll Be on Your Mind I got the sound of an elephant, which I really wanted but I thought would be preposterous, and I mapped to it a keyboard and played the elephant through the keyboard, then put that through an amplifier so it sounded like the kind of guitar I really wanted to have but can’t really play.’
Ultimately, good songwriting is guitar While Skinny’s sound sits well within certain worlds, occupied by the likes of Jordan Rakei and Tom Mische, it’s impossible to compare him to another artist. He arrives at his sound via a South African heritage and North of England upbringing, with a clear appreciation of many different genres that he doesn’t shy away from letting seep through into his songs. ‘For me, I’d love to be somewhere between Mad Lib and Neil Young, they’re the go-to people that I listen to all the time. I guess there are four check boxes that I feel like I’m ticking in my head; the feel and attitude of garage rock – kind of Iggy and the Stooges I Wanna Be Your Dog attitude. Also the laid backness of dub production, then also a really strong hip hop sampling aesthetic. Finally, being able to play it on a guitar. Ultimately, good songwriting is guitar. If you can’t play it on a guitar or a piano on its own, it’s not really a song. A song you
can strip way back and it’s still brilliant. I really love that and I try to be able to do that even with the weirdest songs that I’ve got.’ When Skinny Pelembe comes to Bristol’s Exchange this September as part of the Colston Hall Presents series, fans will get to witness this live, as he brings a full five-piece band with him to play the tracks live. It’s also something he incorporates into his recordings – despite having the skillset to complete full tracks on his own – heading to the studio with a huge array of collaborators, vocalists and musicians, before creating the finished project on his computer.
I’m not mad fussed if I’m getting the tightest takes, I want the takes of the band smiling in the studio ‘I guess there’s no science to prove it or explain it, but when somebody really means something when they play it and you’re in a room with however many other people, you can capture the sound of everybody really feeling something in the studio – you can capture the sound of them smiling. That’s what I’ve been saying to my producer on this album. I’m not mad fussed if I’m getting the tightest takes, I want the takes of the band smiling in the studio and then I’ll fuck around with it afterwards. It’s getting the vibe of happy people in the studio. ‘Every time we play the tunes live as a band, they they kill it – I’m the weak link in the chain, which is exactly what I wanted. It’s amazing.’ The full Sleep More, Make More Friends EP drops on Brownswood Recordings on 21 September and Skinny confirms that there is more new music on its way, including a choral composition with his keys player Chloe Beth Smith and the Field Notes Choir for the Future Bubblers 2.0 compilation, also dropping this September, plus a full album due early next year. Unfortunately, he’s having to stay tight lipped about the project – ‘There are two very great legends who I did some tracks with, and they’ll kill me if I say that they’ve been working together.’

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH
MATT OTRIDGE
a house at the time. We managed to use the reputation that we’d established at The Croft to borrow the money and we bought the building outright.’ Though unable to juggle both, sadly, The Croft closed down in 2013 after having hosted the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Imelda May, Dark Sky and Vessel, and going down as an important part of Bristol’s recent musical history. ‘I wanted to do something creative with my life and being a venue owner and promoter you get the creativity of being involved with something that’s culturally important and something that brings positive change to your community. I’ve met lifelong friends and particularly where I come from, which is the more punky, DIY culture, you meet a lot of likeminded people and it’s a good medium for discussing ideas. It’s been a really positive thing in my life.’ However, despite being such an important cultural asset to the city, like many other grassroots venues in Bristol and across the UK, Exchange’s future is at risk.
I don’t think that venues should have to keep moving because areas get cooler, they should be the pride of the city Bristol’s nightlife scene has been facing an uphill struggle in recent years, adding fuel to the fear that this notoriously vibrant city is on the way to losing its soul to the rampant gentrification that’s already seen property rental skyrocket. Recently, we’ve seen threats to a number of iconic music venues including two high profile closures, The Surrey Vaults and Bierkeller. With more inner-city developments on the way, without significant pushback from the people of Bristol, it’s unlikely things are going to get easier anytime soon. In a bid to fight back, Exchange have made a bold decision to become community-owned – selling affordable shares people interested in the both securing and having a say in the future of Exchange. Launching their campaign on 4 September at Exchange, with live music from some of the acts who work or have worked at the venue, they are hoping to raise a total of £250,000 to go towards historical debts, including recent investments to improve the venue longterm, plus necessary renovations and further improvements, such as expanding the garden. Importantly, they’re also hoping to gain a huge network of co-owners who will have a say in the future of the venue.
Exchange is a venue that has firmly occupied an important place on Bristol’s musical map since opening its doors in 2012. The live music venue has hosted a wide array of now-major artists including George Ezra, Four Tet, IDLES and Sleaford Mods, to name but a few, as well as being a regular home to boundary-pushing collectives like Young Echo and local indie labels such as 1% of One, Invisible Llama Music and Gravy Train.
I’m sure the venue is prime real estate but we want more than that for Exchange On top of a constant stream of genuinely-interesting events, Exchange has won the hearts of many of us here in Bristol due to its undying support for the city’s grassroots music scene and creative endeavours – the 250 capacity venue is also home to a record shop, recording studio and offices for local promoters and record labels.
Already registered as a Community Interest Company, Exchange is planning to take things a step further by becoming Bristol’s first community-owned live music venue. It’s an ambitious campaign to help secure its future, helmed by venue co-owner and manager Matt Otridge. Born and bred in Bristol, Matt got into music promotion from a very young age and has been peddling its spirit in Bristol ever since. On top of running Exchange, Matt promotes across a number of music venues in Bristol under his Deadpunk Promotions, and has been involved in many important projects over the years including Ashton Court Festival and Brisfest, as well as much-missed music venue The Croft. He’s played a major part in the city’s musical evolution and he assures us that he isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. ‘I started promoting gigs in 2002, as well as working at The Croft. After a few years, an opportunity came up with two of the owners to purchase a lease on it. The three of us started running The Croft in 2007, then a few years later another opportunity came up to buy Exchange, so we took that on too. My girlfriend saw it on RightMove, as we were looking for
Like every venue, it will evolve but it will stay within the parameters of what the wider community think makes the place great ‘First and foremost’ explains Matt, ‘what lead us to this idea is that we’ve been running venues for 12 years now. We’ve made great memories and friends, but it is a huge drain on your time and it’s difficult when you’re not really making any money. In order for Exchange to be able to exist for years to come, we can’t always rely on goodwill and people’s love of live music. We need to ensure the people who work here in the future are actually getting paid a living, because there won’t always be the people with the right skills available willing to do it for free. ‘The other and major part of it is that we’re all getting older and we need the ideas of the future. We’re looking to the community for not just the initial investment but for ideas that will help carry Exchange through for however long, and hopefully this is a way of securing that longterm future.
THE INFLUENCERS // 43
‘Obviously it is about raising money as well, which will allow us to implement some ideas that we can see would make the venue better and more financially stable – which is a growing concern. It’s also about being aware that we need to take the reins on finding our own destiny, because there is so little funding left for venues in the UK.’ Without the aid of external stakeholders, Exchange have realised that nobody else is going to help them and that they need to find a longterm solution in order for the venue to exist for years to come. Matt is confident that becoming a community-owned venue is the answer and firmly believes that a number of engaged co-owners will allow business to thrive. ‘This is a way of finding a longterm solution and Bristol feels like a city that will embrace the community vibe of it all. We were already a Community Interest Company and we are already doing things to engage the community, so it seemed like the next logical step. ‘I’m sure the venue is prime real estate but we want more than that for Exchange’ Matt explains. ‘We don’t want to embrace the gentrification that went on in Stokes Croft and is beginning to happen over here. I don’t think that venues should have to keep moving because areas get cooler, they should be the pride of the city. They should remain in places for people to see and embrace, because they are important.’ For those wondering exactly what a community-owned Exchange will look like, Matt explains that everybody who buys a share, available from £250 upwards, will get one vote on all member decisions – no matter how much they invest. They will also have the opportunity to be voted onto a members’ board and, eventually, voted in as a director of live music. These positions will also carry a term limit, to keep things continually evolving far into the future. Of course, people will also get a tax relief and percentage back on their investment, so those with more money to invest will see a greater return, although the one vote system prevents Exchange from being gobbled up by any majority share corporate investor with less honest visions for its future. ‘After we launch on 4 September, we’ll post the link on our website where people can buy shares and become owners of the venue. We recognise that for some people £250 is too much money, however, if they still believe in the place and want to help, it’s all about spreading the word. ‘For those who can buy shares, part of your money will go towards covering historical debts, fixtures and fittings, and the lease’ continues Matt ‘though the majority will be spent on improvements to the venue. We want to improve the outside area and rearrange the venue to allow our new owners and the wider community access every night of the week. We want to invest into sound, stage and the lighting to improve the gigging experience for bands and audience, and we will also be looking to improve venue accessibility. ‘We also plan to invest into green energy ideas, such as solar panels, to bring down our utility costs whilst also improving the venue’s environmental impact. We have also set aside some of the budget for ideas, to try out some new nights and support new ideas, promoters and initiatives.’ Despite the challenges that Bristol’s grassroots music venues are currently experiencing, it’s good to know that there are people out there like Matt who are determined to make sure the city’s arts and nightlife
scene maintains its edge. When I asked why people should invest, Matt replies: ‘It’s about appreciating the culture of Bristol and live music venues in general. I think it’s a really good opportunity to make a difference. I think we’re the first venue whose main
it’s a great way to show that there are other ways of keeping grassroots venues alive focus is live music to do this in England and it’s a great way to show that there are other ways of keeping grassroots venues alive, because the community is sick of seeing live music venues shut down all over the country. ‘I hope that one of the things that comes out of this is that other venues see what we’re doing and turn to the
community to safeguard their cultural assets. ‘I’ve just become a father and I would love to think that in 18 years’ time my daughter will be able to buy a share, because Exchange will still be here. And then she can also become part of its community. I’m not planning on going anywhere anytime soon, as I really love being part of the venue, but I’m also excited that one day other likeminded people can take on this project. It’s nice to know that the venue will be in good hands and that’s the good thing about this community benefit society – it’s not like somebody could snap it all up and change it into a wine bar. Like every venue, it will evolve but it will stay within the parameters of what the wider community think makes the place great.’
