Hot on the tails of their 2017 breakthrough album Push On – which shot straight to number three in the iTunes hip hop chart, where it stayed nestled below Skepta and Drake for a full week – Bristol hip hop duo The Allergies are back with new album Steal the Show, due for release on Jalapeno Records on 19 October. The Allergies are Roy Spencer aka Ninja Tune bedfellow DJ Moneyshot and drum-andbass-turned-funky producer Rackabeat aka Adam Volson. Combining fun funk with an appreciation of golden era hip hop, The Allergies create infectious tunes you can’t help but move to. Some familiar faces return on the new album, including Andy Cooper on four tracks. The Ugly Duckling legend has been working with the duo since their debut album and joins them for their live tour along with soul singer Marietta Smith, which comes to Colston Hall’s Foyer this October. The album also features input from A.S.M, Mizo FitzRoy, Skunkadelic, Unkle Frank and Dr Syntax. Don’t miss a chance to witness the energy of the new album live.

Goat Girl has been a name on many lips for the past couple of years, despite only having a handful of releases until the release of their 19-track eponymous debut earlier this year – and it was worth the wait. They signed to Rough Trade Records as teenagers in 2016, joining the ranks of Sleaford Mods, Jarvis Cocker and Parquet Courts. Clearly, Rough Trade could tell these four South Londoners were on to something special.

Clottie’s guttural vocals convey a maturity beyond her years, matched by continually intriguing instrumentation that forces you to listen and listen hard. THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Adam: That there are people currently living on carnivore diets, eating nothing but red meat and are really healthy! Got to love the Joe Rogan podcast. Roy: That the neighbour’s cat must have a key, ‘cause he keeps getting in my house. 2. Favourite track of all time? Adam: Bump and Hustle Music – Tommy Stewart. Roy: Time’s Up – OC. The bruises off them punchlines still smart. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Adam: Barbara Tucker’s cover of Think. Roy: Gloria Jones – Tainted Love. Ages 8-80 clap on that. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Adam: Tom Misch, Mr Jukes and Jay Electronica. Roy: Remi, Oxygen & Paul Nice, Lack of Afro. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Adam: Cooking food for people, mainly ramen and BBQ. Roy: Bearded lady in a travelling freakshow.

6. What was the last book you read? Adam: Tried to read a book about anxiety recently, but it made me anxious! I’m not much of a reader… more into my podcasts at the moment. Roy: The latest Paper Girls graphic novel, nicked off the Mrs. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Adam: Ozark. Roy: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I’m like each of them, in parts. They’re my Sex and the City. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Adam: Just the usual stuff, snakes, death… and tin foil! Roy: People, places and loud noises. I’ve picked the wrong business.

Who are your top three acts right now? Slowthai, Homeshake, Wooze. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I’d still be doing music but I’d just have to work on the side.

6. What was the last book you read? The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Friends. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Of course. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... In the winter I sleep with my heating on number two. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Going to Germany to play a show.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you… Adam: I once worked as a dinner lady. Roy: I was the only one in the history of my school to fail my Cycling Proficiency Test. 10. When Iggy Pop growls, sage-like on national radio, that your fully DIY, two-fingers-up-at-the-music-industry-punk-bandjust-doing-it-for-the-fucking-love-of-it is “really amazing”, face it: you’re onto something. The Lovely Eggs – psychedelic Lancaster-based rip-roarers and BBC 6 Music beloveds, with a cult following of Eggheads built over five records – are finally learning to bottle up these moments. Lately there’s been plenty to keep them topped up. The Eggs return to Bristol this October to perform one of their last UK shows for a while. With their crowds now having outgrown The Exchange, who hosted The Eggs’ last three Bristol shows, you can catch them at The Fleece on 26 October. The Bristol date comes at the close of a madcap few months of heavy, raucous play touring their fifth studio album This Is Eggland, produced by Flaming Lips prodigy Dave Fridmann. Comprising punks-in-arms husband and wife Holly Ross and David Blackwell, The Lovely Eggs formed in 2006 with Holly on vocals and guitar, and David on drums. Twelve years on, The Lovely Eggs’ summer has been spent

at full festival throttle, playing to swathes of fans and new converts everywhere from Nozstock to Green Man. The couple have clearly had a ball, even through pneumonia and tech jeopardy, driving themselves from stage to stage in their trusty tour transit van. ‘We’ve been non-stop, we’re dickheads really’ says Holly, from home in Lancashire. ‘We run everything ourselves, so we run the label and book all our own gigs and tours, so everything is entirely our own fault. It’s been a really busy time, busier than we ever thought it could be.’ As ‘joyous’ (a word oft-used by Holly), energetic and authentic as its creators, This Is Eggland flings the door wide open to Holly and David’s universe. Put it on and you’ll find your attention grabbed roughly by the scruff of the neck. Between Holly’s glorious Lancastrian sing-chants; David’s tireless drum battle; the distorted glow of raging guitar; psychedelicallyturned fists of sound, and yes, a kazoo – you don’t stand a chance. Consider your ears commanded and spun around. In Holly’ words, This Is Eggland looks at ‘big themes in small things, looking at the bigger picture through your very small,

own world’ and distilling it down. Singles Wiggy Giggy and the cackling Witchcraft are among two to have enjoyed airtime on BBC 6 Music of late. The latter, in particular, capturing the discord of feeling outside the mainstream, of wanting to blast out all the bullshit and clear those thick old cobwebs from your mind. Wiggy Giggy, meanwhile, ‘is about the isolation of living in a place like this, but at the same time, it’s joyous.’

So ‘fuck it’ is the only way of just letting go And of course, The Lovely Eggs’‘fuck it’ philosophy radiates out, as with everything in their trunket. This punkish sentiment comes nuanced: the music striking out its territory between living through the right-royal interrobang of existence and

32 // PREVIEW taking life as it comes, while swimming against the tide. It plays a big part in why the Eggheads love them so. Holly says: ‘More people are understanding us and getting where we’re coming from. It’s just nice, innit? When you feel like you’ve been banging on about something for ages and then people finally get it … The joyousness of abandoning yourself, not being uptight and just going along with it became our philosophy. ‘A parallel thing that goes along with it is that I like to philosophise a lot about different scenarios and what ifs, which can send you quite mad. You could think your way several hours down a certain path, but if you’re thinking about space and eternity, your existence... Why not just say fuck it and save yourself all of that brain-ache and anxiety? That’s a personal struggle, aside from the art side. You’ve just got to go with the flow, you can’t fight things all the time, it’s exhausting. So ‘fuck it’ is the only way of just letting go, really.’ This Is Eggland is the heaviest of The Lovely Eggs’ records to date, its sonic clout literally amplified through collaboration with heavyweight US producer Dave Fridmann, whose multiple credits span The Flaming Lips, Mogwai and Wolf Alice, naming a few, and ’an absolute dream come true’ says Holly. It’s something that would never have happened if it wasn’t for some late-night drunken idea mongering around the kitchen table, a few months back. Holly recollects: ‘We never thought in a million years Fridmann would actually do it. ‘I said to David, “Well I’m going to write to him, I’m going to ask him if he will, ‘cos you you never know, he might.’ David was like, “Don’t be so fucking crazy, he will never touch a band like us, we’re DIY, we’re in England, no record label, we don’t have any influence, we don’t know anyone, we don’t have friends or rich family, we’re on our own in Lancaster”.’

we’ve been written off in the past as a bit of a jokey band But after some digging, Holly got hold of a phone number. With some Dutch courage, she got through first to a Chinese takeaway and then a garage in the US, finally leaving a garbled message on Fridmann’s studio answer machine. Nothing happened for a year and the Eggs put it down to ‘just another drunken antic’. So when the email dropped in from Fridmann himself, saying he wanted to work with them, ‘It was like, shit, it’s game on then isn’t it? I guess we’re doing it,’ says Holly. ‘You can’t back out of something like that. We just love really weird obscure stuff happening, almost like fate, then riding the course of the river it goes down… it’s like whitewater rafting life. It was brilliant.’ It’s a world apart from where Holly imagined she’d be, after her industry experience fronting nineties’ punk girl group Angelica left her so disenchanted she didn’t pick up a guitar for two years. ‘I thought if you were in a band you have to be part of the music industry, and the music industry was so rotten I didn’t want to be in a band. But then one day I just had this epiphany moment that, actually, playing music can be as pure as that. The music industry and playing in a band are two different things. ‘So we started our own band and said we’re not going to sign a record deal, we’re not going to be on a label, and anything that we think is bullshit, is bullshit, and we won’t do it.’ Being a band outside of the industry has seen them living on ‘fuck-all money’, working out how many gigs the couple had to play ‘to pay our rent and eat (...) just what was the breadline… a bit like the hardcore bands in the eighties’ says Holly. Needless to say, The Lovely Eggs are enjoying where’re they’re at; 100% on their terms. ‘Good reviews are nice but we try not to concentrate too much on them, because you start believing them and that’s always a dangerous thing to do. We’ve been written off in the past as a bit of a jokey band, and we were never a jokey band. We see life through different glasses, but that doesn’t mean to say that we’re fucking clowns. So it’s always nice to be recognised for our music. ‘Just to hear people say, “yeah, sounds like a good album” – that’s one of the things that makes me proudest.’

Signing to Hospital Records at the turn of the millennium, South West producer Danny Byrd is one of the most recognised names in drum and bass. Releasing his debut album Supersized in 2008, he’s just dropped his fourth LP on the festishised label, Atomic Funk. Interestingly, the funkiest song on the album isn’t the title track, it comes in the grooving guitar samples of Devil’s Drop – the first single release and Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World. Once you’ve heard it, you become more astute to the funk influence tentacleing its way through the rest of the album. As we’ve now come to expect from Danny, the album demonstrates the versatility of drum and bass, combining obvious funk and hip hop overtones and more subtle influences like garage and R&B with his intelligent production. Atomic Funk delivers 15 tracks and collaborations as varied as MC GQ and Bristol-based soul singer Pete Joseph. It’s his fourth studio length album and is a pleasure to listen through in a single session. Though it’s easy to think of drum and bass music in terms of single tracks put together into an hourlong dancefloor set, Danny’s tracks show a tendency towards thoughtfulness rather than pulling out all the tricks to create dance floor hits, which can be jarring when you’re not actually in front of a sound system.

We caught up with Danny about the new release after an early doors jungle set at last month’s RUN All Day at Motion, where he’d managed to pack out the main stage by 2pm.

‘I’ve had the most fun with this album. As you do more and get more experience, you learn to enjoy the process more and just embrace all the pressures of it.’

‘I’ve been signed to Hospital Records for 18 years now, so I was there right from the start’ he explains. ‘The one thing that they did differently to every other label back then was that they were very album focussed. I find it very hard to work in a different way now, I write in an album frame of mind.

He’s talked about Atomic Funk as a collection of all his favourite influences and genre-wise there are many, but Danny also takes influences from technology, continually striving to change up and improve his production, from the samplers he uses to the microphone used by his vocalists. This album, he explains, is a different kettle of fish to his previous releases...

‘Previously they’ve all been made on logic, they’ve all been made in the box in the same sort of sequences everyone is using. On this album I used a lot of vintage drum machines like MPCs and E-mu SP-1200s, which are famously used by hip hop producers, but I used it on this album to give a different sound to the drums, like the hi hats. Just little things that the listener won’t totally pick up on, but more of a subconscious thing. I wanted the whole sonics to be cleaner and the mix downs to be tighter. I took real pride in my vocal recording this time – not that I didn’t before, but every year you have to up your game. I was trying to get the same kind of sound that you’d get in American pop and R&B, using the same mic they would use and things.’

‘It gives me a license to have variety. With an album you can do stuff that is more self-indulgent, or that you think is more self indulgent, but you show it to the label and they say, actually, ‘That’s the first single’. You can never be objective about your own music – other people are best at that.

It was worth all the effort because one of the interesting things about Atomic Funk is the breathing space it gives to its

load of cameras on Stokes Croft and it was Roni Size and Krust and Reprazent after they’d won the Mercury Prize and this was right in front of me – the music that I love literally right in front of me on the street. It’s always been a massive part of everything I’ve done.

‘With this album, I haven’t put any music out in a while so I didn’t have any of that noise. I got back to using samples, which is much more the dance music method – it should all be bedroom based. But what we did was re-do the vocals and change the lyrics slightly. We sketched over the vocal and recorded new vocals over it, so it still kept the vibe of the original sample, which is maybe why the vocals sound more complete.

Bristol is a home crowd and I really do always feel the love when I play here

‘Hospital has always been a constant. They’re always striving for better things, they’re always the first to do things. It might not seem like a big deal, but in 2002 they were the first drum and bass label to be selling music on iTunes. And they were ahead of the curve with Spotify and how streaming is taking over – they’re very tuned in. But they’re also independent. If I was to go and sign to a major, they could say “you’ve got the freedom to write what you want”, but at the end of the day they’re looking for a radio hit and if you don’t deliver that or you’re not flavour of the month, you’re dropped. How does that serve you as an artist and how does that serve your fans? It doesn’t serve you well in the long run.

‘Last night I went out for dinner in Bristol with a friend, I haven’t been out socially in Bristol in a while and I started thinking “I wonder if there’s a drum and bass night in Bristol on a Tuesday... nah there can’t be”. Sure enough, I saw that Sub

Although Danny is from Bath, both he and the Bristol music scene have very much adopted each other. Bristol is where he got his musical education, metaphorically and literally, and the drum and bass scene over the last 20 years still informs Danny’s music.

‘When you have some success with music, especially radio success, you get a lot of managers circling you and saying “you should do a session with my vocalist” or “you should work with this rapper” – there’s people trying to almost tag along with you and create something so they can have a radio hit too. It’s that sort of really generic music industry stuff that I hate.

‘I always feel like Bath is the village and Bristol is the town. I did a music technology course at City of Bristol College in the 90s and going back and forth to Bristol every day, you picked up on the vibe. I would have to get my bus from Bristol Bus Station and Replay Records was in the station. It was the home of drum and bass and jungle, and you just felt so much closer to it. I remember coming down on the bus once and seeing a

Apart from his Dracula costume, he jokes, Danny says he’ll bring all the ‘high energy and good vibes’ he always brings to a Bristol show. ‘I’m really enjoying DJing at the moment, because all the production stuff is out of the way and the album is flying, I’m playing the album tunes and people know them – that’s what I’m really looking forward to. Bristol is a home crowd and I really do always feel the love when I play here.’
