GEORGE CLINTON AND PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC

Tombs blend a wide array of influences including Black Metal and dark industrial music. ‘Savage Gold’, the band’s third album continues Tombs’ journey into the realms of extremity. This time around, the band has teamed up with producer Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore, Hate Eternal) to record the band’s most extreme release to date.

Recording both as Parliament and Funkadelic, George Clinton revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk by adding influences from several late-’60s acid heroes: Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Sly Stone. The Parliament/Funkadelic machine ruled black music during the ’70s, capturing over 40 R&B hit singles (including three number ones) and recording three platinum albums.

Kid Carpet is Ed Patrick. Ed was performing in an indie band who kept buying expensive, heavy equipment and hurting their backs carrying it in and out of music venues. He put his name into an online anagram generating machine and Kid Carpet was born. He began getting requests for Radio 1 sessions, remixed Fat Boy Slim and performed all over the UK..

Hugh Pescod AKA Redlight is one of the biggest electronic producers to come out of Bristol in the past few years, traversing the rarely trodden ground between underground music and commercial success, with two charting singles to date. ‘Get Out My Head’ reached number 18 in the UK charts and ‘Lost in Your Love’ peaked at number 5. His track 9TS (90s Baby) enjoyed huge underground success last summer and you can expect to hear DJs cut and pasting it across festivals this year.

DJ Yoda, AKA- Duncan Beiny is everyone’s favourite scratcher and cut and paste master. Best known for combining both old and new sounds in his Cut and Paste CD series, including 80s pop and 30s swing, plus bringing to life his sounds with hilarious VJ sets, it’s fair to say DJ Yoda has a knack for bringing smiles to the dancefloor.

Starting out over a decade ago as drum and bass producer DJ Clipz, Hugh had made a name for himself, putting out tracks on respected labels including Roni Size’s Full Cycle and Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy. However, in 2009 he wanted to break away from drum and bass and diversify his output to reflect his other musical interests. He adopted the alias Redlight and set up his own label, Lobster Boy. He’s spent this beginning part of this year touring his hotly anticipated forthcoming new album X Colour, and will be heading back this way for this year’s Love Saves the Day at Eastville Park this May. If you can’t wait that long, his new single ‘Gold Teeth’ from the album is available on iTunes now.

Favourite track of all time? That’s an impossible question to answer! I think there’s amazing stuff about lots of different music and all genres really.

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? Anything that involves being creative and pushing myself, but also maybe something more sociable.

What was the last book you read? I’m reading a book from the late 90s on Suge Knight and Death Row Records at the moment called, ‘Have Gun, Will Travel’.

Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? Boi 1da’s doing some good things right now in the hip hop production world. New York Transit Authority is making some great tunes as well at the moment - his new EP has just landed on Lobster

The producer who prides himself on taking the key skills and disciplines of hip-hop and pushing them into new realms, has since moved forward towards song writing in his later releases like Chop Suey. But despite this change, the presence of artists on the album like Roots Manuva and Action Bronson prove Yoda hasn’t moved far from his hip-hop roots. Yoda recently returned with his third album Breakfast of Champions where he steps up his musical technique again, this time with a live band, featuring a collective of UK MCs and musicians, including Rex Domino and Mouse Outfit members Sparkz & Truthos Mufasa. Bristol is lucky to have DJ Yoda behind the decks this month as he performs a spectacular AudioVisual extravaganza. You’d be a fool to miss this magic.

What have you learned today? Waking up at 6:30am has its benefits as ITV4 has ‘Minder’ re-runs on at that time in the morning.

Worst chart song at the moment? I don’t follow what’s going on in that world of music really. I look at the Shazam charts because I find it really interesting to find out what songs people actually want to find out about.

What have you learned today? That the best fiddlers come from Kentucky (been watching Reginald D Hunter’s Songs of the South on BBC iPlayer). Favourite track of all time? Ridiculously hard one to call, but for the sake of argument, how about Bobby Womack’s “Woman’s Gotta Have It”?

If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? Making movies or food. What was the last book you read? Religion for Atheists by Alain de Botton. Favourite thing on TV? Right now? Girls and Better Call Saul.

Tell us something people don’t often know about you... I was once an actor in the Royal Shakespeare Company. What are you doing tomorrow? Meeting a guy with a beard from New Zealand at breakfast time and then rehearsing for this weekend’s shows. In the afternoon I might try and squeeze in a haircut.

Ninja Tune: Bristol

Ninja Tune celebrated its 25th birthday last month and saw fit to mark the occasion with a one-off label showcase in Bristol.

Regarded by many as a beacon of quality, Ninja Tune is one of the UK’s most forward-thinking labels, and has signed some of the most respected underground artists in the industry, including the likes of Bonobo, Roots Manuva, Mr Scruff and The Bug.

The Firestation heard soul and funk from Seven Davis Jr, alt hip hop in the shape of DELS and Dorian Concept, as well as Mercury Award-winning Young Fathers. In the Old Crown Courts, the agenda was bass, with: Toddla T, Fams of MC DRS, DJ Q, Chimpo; and Melé with regular tour MC, Slick Don.

Multi-genre producer and DJ, Melé has been picking up steam the past few years with releases on Ninja Tune, mixes for Boiler Room and Radio 1, and producing for the likes of Kano. Melé has been inspired by dance, hip hop, computer games, techno, jungle and grime, but 2015 will see a more refined sound. He’s just dropped his third mixtape in the Melé Vanelé series and has releases due out on Black Butter and Redlight’s Lobster Boy.

We caught up with the scouse producer backstage after his set…. You’ve been known to drop anything from Destiny’s Child to a grime track in your DJ sets. What goes into putting together a set for you? For the last few years, it’s always been trap, house, anything, but right now I’m trying to go a lot more club. It’s going to be four four, UK funky vibes, kuduro, techno, just fun vibes man. If I want to produce for Kano or for another rapper or for any other artist, I’m doing it under my own name Chris Peers. So for 2015, Melé is pure club. You’re famous for working across a massive variety of genres. Have you got a favourite? I was first into hip hop, I was a proper hip hop head when I was as younger. When I was 12, it was Wu Tang Clan and G Unit and all that stuff. Once I got a bit older I started discovering house music. The first house music I ever heard was Audio Bullys back in 2004, and that was the first thing I ever heard with a kick drum, and I was like, ‘this is like hip hop with a kick drum, it’s sick’. So I then got into garage and techno… Personally, it’s always been a bit of everything and Melé has always been about bringing that all into one. Your new mixtape is hyped at the moment. Can you give us a few words about it? It’s giving people a snapshot of what I’m playing at the moment in clubs. So Melé Vanelé 1 & 2 there is a lot of hip hop, which is what I was playing at the time. And Melé Vanelé 3 is completely where I’m at musically and DJ wise at the moment. In my set tonight there was a lot of UK funky, a lot of techno. A lot of DJs right now are playing techno, and that’s cool, but the thing with me is that I never want to conform to what everyone else is doing. I always want to take bits of what I like and spit it out in my own way. I never want to fit into a certain genre. It’s all about having fun. I took the idea from hip hop mixtapes. A load of hip hop guys who I used to listen to would just put all the shit that they were doing in the studio onto a mixtape and give it out. And I feel like I was one of the first people in dance and electronic music to collect all the things I was doing in the studio and give it out. It’s just about providing people with what I love, and hopefully they like it. You and Toddla T are known to be good friends, has he had any input in your style of producing or DJing? Yeah, totally. When I was first going out, when I was 16/ 17, Toddla and Annie and Diplo were the first people I was ever going to see and it was seeing DJs who could smash it to a crowd like this and play a variation of different music. I grew up listening to one genre music – DJs I grew up listening to were Eddie Halliwell, people like that, who played hard music for an hour and a half. And listening to people like Toddla and people like that, it just showed me that I can go and flex what I really like. If I play it in the right way, people will like it. Toddla has had a massive influence on my career – and life! Him and Annie are two of my best friends, and it’s just great to have people that that are just real and playing the music that they love. Redlight told Nitelife that you’ve got some “absolute heat coming out”. Who do you really respect in the industry right now? A lot of the people that are playing tonight. I always respect people who are doing their own thing and not copying anyone. Chimpo and all the Manchester guys are doing what they do. Redlight obviously has had a lot of top tens, but the music he does is still totally him. I’m not into people who conform to what major labels tell them to do. Redlight, Melody, Benton, Parma Kid, there’s loads.

Your name comes from Super Marios Bro and some of your music has been influenced by video game sounds. What’s that all about? I love computer games and I think the best thing about music is, if you can bring what you love in your personal life into it, then fucking run with it. I don’t want to be that guy that’s all about video games, because that’s a bit cheesy. What else have you got coming up this year? I’ve got an EP coming out of Redlight’s label, Lobster Boy in May. And hopefully, if I can get it finished on time, an EP on Black Butter at the end of summer. We’ve seen you play in Bristol a few times now, have you got any special connection with the city? I first started DJing here about four years ago. I have certain cities that I love in the UK and Bristol is definitely in my top 3. Thank the lord, I’ve played Glastonbury for the last four years of my life, and hopefully I can keep doing it. And I’ve been at Motion, I’ve been at Thekla… it’s just always really lovely to come and play here, man.

Nitelife talks to DJ Dazee about Ruffneck Ting and the jungle renaissance… “Everyone remembers the Ruffneck parties,” says DJ Dazee, co-founder and now head honcho of recently re-launched Ruffneck Ting. Dazee moved to Bristol aged 18 for university and never left after falling in love with the city. “It became my spiritual home,” she says. Dazee was already heavily into music, but the free party culture that was going on in Bristol in the early 90s is what inspired her to start DJing and producing her own music. “I was one of those really irritating people at raves that was constantly harassing DJs to play this and that, so I thought I’d better learn myself. “Way back in the day, I used to record Pete Tong and make my own mixes tapes because I had a double cassette player – that was my first attempt at being a DJ!” The Ruffneck Ting club night was founded in 1993 by Dazee and Markee Ledge (Kosheen) in the humble beginnings of The Bank – now the Love Inn – and grew into a jungle institution. The successful label launched two years later, putting out tracks by Substance (AKA Dazee and Markee Ledge), Decoder, Felony and MC Jakes. “We decided to have a 20 year anniversary Ruffneck Ting club night and launched an album of all the classics, but digitally remastered and put together on one album: RNT20. “But a year or so before the re-launch, I had met up with a group

of people in Birmingham who loved Ruffneck back in the day and were really good producers, really into that sound, still, but obviously in its more progressive form; and I started writing with them and collaborating with them. “That was Jinx and K-Jah, initially, and we started getting a batch of tunes together. “After the RNT20 album came out, it was really easy to start putting singles out and they were really well received in the download charts - it’s snowballing a bit at the moment! It’s a kind of a renaissance and it’s happening at the right time.” Although Ruffneck was a huge success and took Dazee to Europe and USA, performing at some of the biggest drum and bass parties, including Universe; things died down in the noughties. The other crew members took on different projects and moved away and Dazee focused on other things, like music teaching. However, she remained part of the scene with a number of residency nights, her involvement with the Dutty Girl collective, and she kept on making music behind the scenes. “That jungle sound did die down for a bit, but it was doing what it was doing during that time. I was actually a resident for Run during a big chunk of that time, so I was still involved, just not with the same passion I am now, because I’m running the label again. “And I think what were doing is helping the scene to grow again. Especially with the radio show.” Dazee now presents a fortnightly Ruffneck Ting Take Over radio show on Ujima 98fm on Thursdays from 8-10pm. “I think the sound was a little bit obliterated by the music that was being put out there representing drum and bass, some of the harder stuff or some of the more commercial stuff that was being played on Radio 1. But I think now people are realizing there’s much more to the sound of drum and bass than what’s coming through on the mainstream.

“In fact, they seem to have taken all that away again now. There’s not even a drum and bass show on 1xtra, but that’s forced it underground again and made it more popular. “It’s big in Bristol because it always was, you’ve got people like Roni Size and Full Cycle being known for creating the sound in the first place, but you’ve got the love for it growing in other cities as well.” Since the relaunch, the label has gone from strength to strength with new artists Jinx, K Jah and Vytol putting out tracks, plus new stuff from old skoolers Dazee, Serum and Saxxon helping to firmly re-establish Ruffneck Ting. With releases reaching number 1 in the Juno and Drum and Bass Arena Download charts, the label is definitely alive and kicking again. “Ruffneck Ting’s roots are in Jungle but we’re forward thinking, not a retro label, bringing steppers, jump up, plus deeper and harder edged elements and even some liquid vibes,” says Dazee. “We’re always going to keep it sample-based. MR SCRUFF You’re influenced by so many genres, including jazz, hip-hop and reggae and can catch sniff of so many different styles in your work, but is there a particular genre of music that is close to your heart? I think I get something from each of them. There are so many different genres with the word ‘genre’ being used as a very lose term for a collection of certain sounds and certain rhythms, or certain qualities around the tempo. But I find, if you go back a few hundred years, so many genres have similar roots, so I kind of get quite a lot of similar feelings from different genres or different sub genres. I guess I don’t really have a favourite one, but the first thing that got me into music was Blues, 2 Tone and Reggae. But if you look at the influence Blues has had on so many different kinds of music, going from Rock n Roll to R&B and subsequently Soul and all that kind of thing, when you trace Blues back and you can see how deep the roots of Blues are of Arabic origins going back more than a thousand years ago. I guess my attention goes in all different directions at once, simply because if I’m attracted to a certain piece of music or genre then I want to find more about it. But like most things, you get excited when you hear a record. You don’t say ‘ok, I’m going to study Jazz for the next year and then move on to Gambian music.’ That’s what kind of makes the little connections between genres so interesting, because you make your own personal discoveries from individual records and artists and you find out what their journey was. I think its constant curiosity. Can you remember the first vinyl you ever purchased with your own pocket money? The first record I got was by Shakin Stevens called Green Door. Shakin Stevens I suppose was a bit of a modern day pop version of Elvis, but when you’re ten a cool man with a quiff shaking his legs wearing a denim jacket seemed quite cool. Apart from that though, most of the stuff I was buying with my pocket money was things like The Specials, Madness, The Selecta and stuff like that. When did your love for tea start to merge in with your music? I suppose it was when I started selling tea at my club nights in Manchester about fifteen years ago. It was just something nice to do in the spare room we had. It was like a foyer room in the venue and I thought it was a bit small for the DJ’s, so decided to turn it into a like a café area and bring a few tea bags and a kettle. It kind of grew from there really. I started to take it on my tour probably from about 2002 onwards and a few years later I took the next step and set up a tea company and that went on for about nine years. I finished that in 2012 just because I was getting too busy with music. We still do the tea at gigs, but it’s just because it’s something nice for the people who aren’t drinking and really appreciate a brew. Even for people who have had one too many drinks it’s a nice change. Usually for people who aren’t drinking, the choice of drinks can be pretty dyer in a venue. I drink tea all day at home, so why can’t I drink it in a club? I think its span from my own experiences in clubs, especially all-nighters like northern soul nights where I’d be playing in clubs till the very early hours in the morning. Mr Scruff - AKA Andy Carthy, is a highly respected name in the eyes of many eclectic music fans. The DJ/Producer is best known for his diverse six hour plus sets, fusing together a range of sounds covering soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz and reggae. The albums produced on the loveable Ninja Tune Records follow the assorted style of his DJ sets, giving us many knee wobbling, bass-heavy classics and “eyebrow raising” bangers. Over the years fans of Mr Scruff have joined him on a tea-fuelled musical journey in both his DJ sets and as a producer, from the upbeat chirpy days of Trouser Jazz in 2002 right up to his most recent and matured productions in last year’s highly successful Friendly Bacteria. Whether you’re a fan of his earlier fish orientated sounds, his unique artwork or his collaborative work with the likes of Alice Russell and Denis Jones, there’s no denying that Mr Scruff will always provide you with good music and a cuppa at the end of the night. Nitelife were lucky to catch up with one of the UK’s friendliest producers before his six hour DJ set at The Old Fire Station later this month. Not only did Mr Scruff teach us a thing or two about

music history, he shared the answer to the question we were all thinking- how does the most famous tea connoisseur in music like his cup of tea? What originally inspired you to start producing music? I was very kind of enamoured with the whole mixing thing in the early 80’s. I heard mixing before I understood what it was and once I realised what it was, I thought ‘right well I’ve got records, I’ve got a turntable and a cassette recorder so I can try and mimic what I hear on other peoples mixes’. So I started doing a lot of cassette tape editing and a lot of tape loops and stuff like that and I suppose that was very similar to going into an established studio, but because I didn’t have the proper DJ kit when I was eleven or twelve in the early eighties, to do a proper mix I had to chop stuff up which was basically editing and a very long winded way of doing things without a computer. So I guess the whole DJ and producer thing, very much started out in tandem. At the time they were both kind of studio based, ‘studio’ being a very lose description of me sat in my families front room with a load of wires breaking buttons on my tape deck!

How do you take your tea? It depends really. I mean its Monday morning now so it’s a no nonsense, full on, very strong milk and no sugar. I generally tend to start strong in the morning and go weaker during the afternoon to the evening. I suppose it’s kind of full on English Breakfast first of all and then later on you move on to something more delicate. I’m like anyone, if I start to have lots of caffeine in the evenings then I’m awake at three in the morning with loads going on in your mind and I like my sleep, so I stick to herbal teas and fruit teas in the evening. Your 2014 release Friendly Bacteria is very different sound compared to your cheeky jazz and fish inspired releases from Keep it Unreal, Trouser Jazz and even Ninja Tuna. What drove you to take a different direction in your sound in your latest project? I’m not sure really. I’m a big fan of letting stuff happen in the studio and a lot of it just came from working with the people I collaborated with. The whole point of collaboration is to take you outside of your comfort zone to create sounds that you wouldn’t normally. Denis Jones features on quite a few tracks on the album and his sound is very different to mine, but we get on like a house on fire and in the studio we’re really productive and we’re both really excited about what was happening when we were working together. So yeah, it wasn’t really something I put a massive amount of thought to, it just happened. I was

thinking just the other day that a lot of the stuff on the last album actually sounds like stuff from my really early demos in 1986, with very stark sounds and a lot of drum machines, but that was just due to the equipment I had at the time. I was a teenager with a paper round so I was just using 4 Track Recorders and drum machines and whatever I could that would bang and make noises. I think outwardly, it might sound different, but I think maybe a lot of it is just influences I’ve had for a long time just making themselves known through my music now. I’ve always liked a lot of aggressive and dark music as well as happy stuff and I’ve always been into punk, techno, industrial music and all sorts. I think things are maybe less cheerier on this album but its stuff that’s always been there, but only just bubbling to the surface now. There is still quite a lot of friskiness and cheekiness sort of popping up but it’s just less in your face. I can’t finish an album without a couple of raised eyebrow moments going on! So will you continue with this direction in sound, or will the fish tales ever return again? Well I’ve done five of them in total. I’ve got hundreds of records that’ve got all kinds of fish or maritime appropriate watery themes, but the last thing I want to do is approach something like that out of obligation. I did it with Get a Move On for example. I created that by accident in my studio and it’s probably my biggest tune, but the last thing I wanted to do was go into the studio and make something the same just because that one worked. You just get yourself into a bit of a rut otherwise and repeat yourself. Unless you’re really excited about something then I don’t think you should do it.

As long as you make sure those tunes stand the test of time then there’s not really the need to make anymore. If you do a series or something like that then you’ve always got to know when to stop. Think about how many films that have sequels and how many go beyond five that are actually any good. Sometimes, you can have too much of a good thing.

There’s something magical about having a cup of tea at a time you’re not supposed to. You tour a lot across the UK and Europe, but what is it about Bristol that keeps you returning back for more? A lot of my friends in Manchester are from Bristol and there’s a few thing I really like about the city. Obviously I suppose for a lot of people the relationship with Bristol varies from a love for Smith & Mighty, Wild Bunch and then onto Massive Attack and all that kind of thing. But when that music was being made in the mid to late eighties it was incredible. I remember buying all the Smith & Mighty records when they came out when I was a 16 year old. I like playing in cities where there’s a deep love for music and you can definitely feel that in Bristol. You know you don’t have to mess around with what to play and you know you can just get straight in there because everybody loves their tunes.

Name: Conal Dodds Age: 47 Job title: Concert Promoter

Conal Dodds is no stranger to hard work. His working day starts with emails and phone calls, like many of us, and finishes with late-night gigs. Through his work as a promoter for Metropolis Music, he has been responsible for bringing huge acts like Paolo Nutini and The Pogues to Bristol, who would usually miss out the musicloving city on their big arena tours, by opening up the underused Lloyd’s Amphitheatre for special open-air gigs as part of his Bristol Summer Series. This year’s Summer Series will bring local prodigy George Ezra, Jessie J, Seasick Steve and Kaiser Chiefs to Bristol’s Harbourside this June. Conal also promotes for Noel Gallagher, Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol, Portishead, and Lana del Rey; and it all started with a charity gig featuring Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant over two decades ago… What does your role generally involve? I promote concerts; effectively I’m a professional gambler. I take on the risk so have to pay the artists and all the running costs of a concert and then hope to sell enough tickets to cover the

costs and make a profit. Amongst many others, I promote Noel Gallagher, Foo Fighters, Snow Patrol, Portishead, Lana del Rey, George Ezra. Could you describe a typical day in your job? Get into the office at 10am, spend all day on emails and phone, dealing with artist booking agents, planning advertising campaigns, costing up and routing tours, haggling over venue rentals and artist fees, constantly talking with our ticketing department, then out at a gig until late, then get up and do it all over again! What’s your proudest achievement? To be able to work with some amazing musicians and people every day, and to continue to make my living from promoting concerts after 25 years. The easy way to make a small fortune in the music industry is to start with a large one. What’s been the weirdest moment? I have two - being sacked by the artist Beck for punching him in the stomach. And being asked (by an elderly magistrate at a licence hearing for a show in earls court) if I was Jay Z! How did you end up in your role? My first ever event was a charity gig with Robert Plant. I hitched to his house six times until he was in and persuaded him to play a show in Monmouth - a well in Cambodia was built on the proceeds. His bass player Paul Martinez told me I was good and should be a promoter or a manager, so I thought I should give it a go.

I’ve since promoted shows with Robert Plant, so was able to thank him personally for helping me start out in the first place. What’s the best thing about your job? I get to do something I love every day. I dropped out of A Levels after 4 months and worked in factories for 4 years, so I know how lucky I am to do what I do. What’s the hardest thing? Never being able to take my foot off the pedal, and being away from my family a lot. There is never a day when I think ‘I can leave early today as there is nothing left to do’ - it can be relentless. But I chose this career and I’m not complaining! Any advice for others wanting to follow a similar career path? Get used to never having enough sleep! If you want to have a long career in the music industry, work really, really hard and show respect to everyone you work with, whatever level they work at.
