Representing the new generation of soundsystem culture, Gardna has been compared to legends like Rodney P and Q Tip but with a South West lean. Through his many collaborative projects and live Dubwise PA set, he delivers delivers a powerful concotion of reggae, ska, dub and jungle. His ‘Festival Season’ track, produced by Dreadsquad, became Boomtown’s signature tune last year and was championed on Radio 1 by Rob Da Bank. Gardna also runs the Boom Sound label alsongside Adam ASBO Disco and James Wonkavision, an offspring of Boom Agency and Boomtown festival. In the coming weeks, Gardna is set to release his much anticipated video for new track ‘Sunday’, which was filmed in Bristol with Game of Thrones star, Maisie Williams. Australian producer Jordon Alexander aka Mall Grab first came onto the scene with his Feel-U release on Collect-Call in early 2015. He followed it up with an equally impressive release on 1080p. Last December, Mall Grab helped launch new Bristol label Shall Not Fade with his moody Alone EP, which has since been getting played by Four Tet and Harvey Sutherland, to name a few. The ambient techno producer brings his unique sound to Bristol for the first time this month, when Shall Not Fade teams up with Bristol-based party-throwers, Piff to present Mall Grab at an unusual space in St Pauls for a party from 10pm-5am. CUT CAPERS

In this month’s local talent issue, Nitelife takes a look at the flamboyant Bristol-based band, Cut Capers. 2015 proved a momentous year for the band, entertaining festival-goers at Glastonbury, Boomtown and Secret Garden Party; as well as their first European tour. Last month, the eight-piece outfit launched their debut album Say What, with a sold-out party at Fiddlers. We at Nitelife were some of the lucky ones to squeeze our way in and stole the band away for a chat before they jumped on stage for a night that signified the beginning of an exciting chapter in the history of Cut Capers. Formed in late 2011, if pushed to describe Cut Capers’ style you could say: energetic ska mixed with a blend of hip hop, swing, soul and roots reggae; however there remains so

much more on offer. It’s only through listening to Cut Capers you can really get a true grasp of their sound. Their dynamic of music seems to work in threes: Firstly, a triumvirate of vocals with two emcees, Eloy Sinser, who provides a rasping crescendo with flair and lyrics with Spanish twist, and Mark Pearce, who displays with passion and confidence the Bristolian roots of the group. In between them we have the wonderful Jane Thomas’ fantastic, soulful vocals. Then comes the lively trio of brass with Mark, again, stepping up to the tenor saxophone when he isn’t singing or rapping, alongside Tom Taylor on the baritone saxophone and Angel Rodriguez on the trumpet. And maintaining the foundation of rhythm and drive, we have Matt Sunderland on percussion and drums, Dan Plimmer on bass, and finally

Nick Van Tinteren on guitar. This ‘triple effect’ comes together organically, cultivating the lively and astonishing sound that is Cut Capers.

We didn’t want to be pigeon holed as a festival band “We started off with a mostly hip hop sound,” says Mark, “but Nick came from a guitar background, so we had that blend from the beginning. From the get-go we wanted to keep it fun and lively and our friendship was a huge part in that.”

Cut Capers or ‘to cut a caper’ is a term defined by action: ‘to frolic, romp or engage in so-called frantic or ridiculous dances’. If ever a band’s name encompassed what they were about, Cut Capers are a prime example. “Cut Capers means to mess around,” says Nick. “We wanted a fun name that represented who we are, and messing around having fun is what we love to do.” The video for their album title song, ‘Say What’ gives an immediate sense of the convivial Cut Capers cheer. The video has already received over 100,000 hits online - a big testament to the band’s increasing popularity. Mark says, “‘Say What’ sums us up with both the song and the video. It’s just us being ourselves, staying relaxed and having a good time.” Five years since they started playing together, Cut Capers recorded their debut album at Bristol’s Toybox studios over the course of nearly a year. “It was important that we didn’t force anything,” says Jane. “And that it came through a natural progression that wasn’t rushed.” Mark says, “When the day arrived that we had the album in

its material, physical form, to hold in our hands and to show people for the first time, it was a great feeling. We couldn’t help but get emotional about it. From the times we would stay at the studio till two in the morning, in between having to go to work, it was a long, hard but incredible experience.”

“Everyone is just open to get together and support each other,” says Nick. “There are so many amazing musicians based here who get together for all different types of projects, and it almost feels like anything can happen – it’s inspiring.

Cut Capers have a deserved reputation as a brilliant festival band, being asked back year-on-year by festivals like Boomtown and SGP. However, the group hopes that with the release of Say What, they can show that they are much more than a great live act.

Dan adds: “You can be at an open mic night and someone from Massive Attack could walk through the door and get involved.”

“The festivals really helped us,” says Matt, “in honing what tracks would be on the album through the reception of the crowd. But we didn’t want to be pigeon holed as a festival band. There are some tracks on the album that we believe give us an extra dimension. It’s great because we’re able to show that we are versatile and we do have a different side. Jane says, “What began with Nick and Mark has now reached a stage where everyone has an input. Being an eight piece, we all have our own background in music - what’s important is that we all like ‘good’ music! She continues: “Bristol’s wicked! There is such a great vibe within the music scene and the city as a whole.”

“The energy here is unbelievable”, says Nick. “It seems Bristol bands have a mutual pride in each other. There is a warm, welcoming feel, like we’re all one big family. We want to say thanks to all the bands for getting us here and supporting us on the way.” Once again, it looks like Bristol has another great act it can be proud of. DROPOUT DISCO: CRAZY P SOUNDSYSTEM @ THE LANES

New kids on the block, Dropout Disco launched with almighty bang last month, with their first full-blown party at The Lanes on 11 March. With tickets sold out, The Lanes was rammed and not a booty was left unshaking as Crazy P Soundsystem, Addesse Versions and Dropout Disco residents Balthazar and Willah took to the decks. Dropout Disco was set up little over a year ago by three university students with an unquenched thirst for a good disco and house night. Dropout’s Ollie Fairweather explains: “We were bored of attending generic nights with no decor and little thought put into it, with the sole intention of making money. We were passionate about entertaining, disco, funk and house so we thought we should give it a go ourselves!” The trio has previous experience hosting rooms, regularly taking charge of the Tunnel at Motion, but the time had come to host their own night. And after the success of their

first attempt, we can expect regular appearances from these guys. Ollie assures us we’ll see more from Dropout Disco before the beginning of summer.

What was your favourite song of the night? Well, I think Echo went down really well although, in fairnesss, the crowd were buoyant throughout the whole night so that’s a fairly difficult one to pin down! They were certainly enjoying their disco.

“From careful music selection to bespoke decor for the venue, we guarantee not to hold back on either and hope that the night at The Lanes was testament to this, with attention to detail like changing the projection lenses every 30 minutes to suit the mood as the music progressed...” Expectations for their next event are high after scoring Crazy P Soundsystem. Who better to headline their first line up than underground house-and-disco stalwarts, Crazy P’s Danielle Moore and Jim Baron for a Soundsystem

We caught up with leady lady, Danielle after the show for a run down…

How do live sets and Crazy P Soundsystem nights compare for you? They are very different. Primarily the full live band is an opportunity for us to play all our own music live using drums, keys, bass, guitar and vocals. We have to think about the visual aspect of the performance more, so and it’s a full engagement of the stage and an audience. It’s a serious and thoroughly consuming affair. We LOVE it! The Soundsystem has given us an opportunity to take some of our music to smaller venues where more of a party

REWIND // 25 atmosphere is wanted. Usually it’s two DJs mixing our own music with live vocals and keys, combining remixes and our fave tunes of the moment ...it gives us chance to experiment more and is usually far less intense. Crazy P has been going strong over 20 years now. How does it feel to see nights like Dropout Disco still cropping up, which are essentially dedicated to a sound you have been pushing for so long? It’s great! It’s important to us to meet much younger promoters, DJs and dancers who have a very fresh energy and are still enjoying our sound. It’s a huge compliment, of course, but it also reflects the fact whilst there’s a lot of alternative music options out there, there’s still a place for the sound we’ve always loved and played. There’s some exciting young people out there fuelling a long-burning fire. What did you guys make of the re-explosion of progressive (less disco-y) house music a few years ago? It’s inevitable that music will recycle itself and evolve, or rather revolve. There are people hearing music for the first time all the time and we grow into different music tastes as our moods change. There’s room for everything and for me it’s important you stay honest to what you like and not be influenced by any trends or opinions. Music is a feeling not a trend. How did you get involved with Crazy P in the first place? I got involved with Crazy P back in 1999/2000 when I met the lads at a house party. Apparently I was holding court (which usually means telling fabricated stories) and DJing which was my first love. I’d been introduced to Crazy P(enis) through my boyfriend at the time, and they asked me to come along to an audition and, to be honest, that was the start of our time together! How long was the process of creating your latest album, Walk Talk Dance Sing? It took a couple of years in total. It’s quite a long time for an album to come together, although others take longer. I think, as you get older, there is a lot of external goings on in life that makes it more difficult to be biting at the bit every day. Music can be a demanding activity on your time and takes patience and energy. We all had a lot of things going on and so we allowed ourselves more space in the process. What are your thoughts on the final sound of the album and what’s been the reaction to it? Well it’s been out a year now and reports are it’s been received well... K7 have been a good label for us and we are pleased with what the album has achieved. It’s relevant to its time and there is certainly a mix of sounds on there. It’s probably less dance-floor than the previous album but that’s the beauty of making your own music and not feeling the need to work within the restraints of what’s expected. We are looking forward to seeing how the next project sounds. You’re known for putting on a really great show. Is this something you actively push, or are you just having a great time up there? A bit of both I suppose. We love being on stage as a team. You buzz off each other’s energies and, of course, the audience and we’ve been lucky to experience that. The live show is the culmination of writing and hard work rehearsing, so it’s an expression of all that energy. Jim is usually influential on certain set pieces and more creative aspects of the sets, but I think mainly it’s because we love it! What was your original inspiration behind early Crazy P, and are there any new influences you’re taking on board now? The guys met at university and, as producers, were open to using samples from classical music, folk music - whatever really - and using them as a starting point to develop whatever they wanted. Jim was a trombonist, guitarist and keyboard player, and Toddy was mainly a guitarist and producer. They loved similar music, especially 70s live stuff such as War, Earth Wind and Fire, Rufus and Chaka Khan, but they also DJ’d and so had influences from many fields. Once they wanted to take the sound live, they employed more musicians. Now there’s so much music around, it’s taking everything you hear - from vocal soundbites, unusual instrumentation, music across most genres - and getting to see as many bands as possible, then taking that energy back to the studio and seeing what happens. What exciting plans have you got in the pipeline? New music from Crazy P imminent, remixes, collaborations and solo works from Basejam and Hot Toddy, plus festivals and The States. All that amidst the excitement of our personal lives.

HIDE ‘N’ SEEK WITH ASIAN DUB FOUNDATION, 29 APRIL @ MOTION

Hide ‘N’ Seek is a supergroup of prolific, young promoters in Bristol, who will come together under one roof this April for a huge summer warm up at Motion.

of the breadth of creative talent involved in the event, but it’s impossible to ignore the caliber of headliners, Asian Dub Foundation.

Taking over the whole venue with otherworldly zones such as the Temple of the Hunted, The Outlaw Stage, The Vortex and The Escape Pod, you can expect a mix of music, circus, theatre and interactive games.

Formed in Hackney in 93, the group’s second album Rafi’s Revenge was nominated for a Mercury award, and their follow up, Community Music was given the prestigious and very-rarely-awarded 10/10 by NME.

Fronting the line up is the trailblazing Asian Dub Foundation, along with DJ Yoda (AV set), Ragga Twins and Wrongtom, Cut Capers, First Degree Burns and more.

As well as various other accolades along the way, ADF have some very famous fans. Primal Scream described ADF as ‘the best live act in Britain’, they’ve toured the US with Beastie Boys, and David Bowie himself invited them to play at his Meltdown Festival in 2002, telling the press that Community Music was one of his favourite albums.

The event is being brought to us by Mystery Disco and Wonder Productions, who promise that the fun and games will extend far beyond the night, with events planned before, during and after. Rumour has it that a city-wide game of hide and seek will take place in April, so keep your ears to the ground for more info. Even better – the event is raising money for the Malawi food crisis through Bristol charity, Temwa. This is sure to be an unforgettable night, not least because

Guitarist and founding ADF member, Steve Chandra Savale (aka Chandrasonic) recalls for Nitelife magazine how he and the ground-breaking electronic group first got together. “I answered an advert Dr Das put in the paper back in the early 90s. I still remember, it said: ‘Looking for black or

Asian musicians to start experimental dub noise project.’ I think I was the only one that answered!” Within a few years, the rest of the group had met through a community music project in London, where they were individually running workshops teaching Asian children about music technology. Given their respective backgrounds in music and shared social views, it made sense to get together on a joint project, and Asian Dub Foundation was born. This was during a time of significant anti-Asian racism in Britain, says Steve. “We weren’t the only ones doing it, but unlike other people, we didn’t throw out the punk thing.” In fact, they didn’t throw out any genre or style of music if it inspired them. “I remember walking into Dr Das’ flat and going through his parents’ record collection which included classical Indian music.” That sitar-inspired guitar sound is still one of the most recognisable in their music today, alongside heavy doses of jungle, dub, ragga, hip hop, rock and, of course, punk.

While their music is undoubtedly political, with their breakthrough track ‘Fortress Europe’ recognised as an attack on European immigration policy, and their latest album More Signal More Noise including tracks like ‘Get Lost Bashar’; Steve says the band can get annoyed with this enforced political tag shrouding the quality of their musicianship. If you took the lyrics out of ADF’s music, you would still hear an experimental, boundary-pushing track. After all, where else can you hear bhangra, ragga and rap all on a track that actually sounds good and is guaranteed to get your feet moving? “Before anything else, we’re musicians - people forget that. What motivates us is the need to perform. Of course, I’m very lucky to be able to play on a stage, but for me it’s a need. Our music is about creating maximum excitement.” It makes sense then that ADF are at their very best when they are playing live. In their latest album, More Signal More Noise they have

managed to channel this live energy into a record. How? By recording and mixing the whole thing in under six days. “We realised that we were doing it the wrong way round, recording and then touring the songs.”

I think it’s our best album. I think we sound more alive here than on our previous records More Signal More Noise is a re-recorded version of their 2013 album, The Signal and The Noise, which they produced with dubstep legend and early ADF inspiration, Adrian Sherwood. “While we were touring with The Signal and the Noise, the songs started to change. They changed on the road, and that’s where we are best.

“When you’re on tour, you get deadened to everything except the live show. What can you do on a tour bus? You focus all your energy on the show. “I don’t really remember a decision being made to rerecord the songs. It was after a really messy show at Village Underground in London – messy as in the party afterwards – and we all just went into the studio the next day. “It was easy - we’d been playing the songs for six months. When doing something is easy – that means it’s probably good! I think it’s our best album. I think we sound more alive here than on our previous records. “We have good memories of playing in Bristol. Anyone who hasn’t seen us before should expect the unexpected!”

ANDY HEATH Andy Heath Age: 36 Job title: Founder at Sip the Juice / Marketing and Programming O2 Academy Bristol

Sip the Juice are a collective of Bristol based DJs and promoters, bringing the finest selection of live hip hop acts to the city. After recently celebrating their fifth year of delivering some of the biggest names in hip hop, including The Pharcyde, DJ Premier, the late legend Phife Dawg (A Tribe Called Quest) and many more, as well as working alongside venues like O2 Academy to bring acts like Wu-Tang Clan, Mos Def, and Mobb Deep to Bristol, Sip the Juice are firmly on the map as one of Bristol’s most prominent hip hop promoters. As one of the DJs, promoters and founders of Sip the Juice, head honcho Andy Heath has helped deliver some of those down-in-history nights you’ve probably still got that old ticket stub for. Moving from Hereford to Bristol to study graphic design in the late nineties, Andy has always been a fan of Bristol’s music and nightlife culture. He says he first caught the “promoters bug” when he began organising fundraising events for his degree show, but it was only when he began working at the much-mourned Level nightclub on Park Row that he started booking events on a much bigger scale. “I started putting on a night called 3rd Rail at Level, with a couple of guys who went on to do The Blast and Shit the Bed at In:Motion. That’s where it all began for me really.” “During that time we put on relatively big shows with US artists who’d never really been to Bristol before, like Jazzy Jeff, Kool Keith, DJ Premier and Lord Finesse. It was a pretty exciting time.” A few years after graduating, Andy moved to London and ran a bar for former Fabric promoter, Steve Blonde, where he was able to pick up more tips and tricks on events promotion. He returned to Bristol after a period of time to start work at The Bank (now The Love Inn) and soon after, Sip the Juice was born. Starting off as an excuse to DJ, Andy and a few friends began organising hip hop nights at The Bank to draw in a small crowd. But within a short space of time, these events grew into something much bigger, quickly becoming one of Bristol’s biggest hip hop nights to date. “We gradually started by booking a few middle of the road names, but before I knew it the promoter bug came back and I was booking acts and venues on an even bigger scale than before. “I think the biggest milestone for us was booking The Pharcyde at O2 Academy in 2013. It was something we thought we’d only do for 500-600 people, but it was almost a sell-out show. “After that we started working with people like Motion, alongside MJR and even Tokyo World to help find artists for their events. The whole thing just snowballed.” Now, alongside running Sip the Juice, he works as the marketing and programming executive at one of Bristol’s most prolific venues, O2 Academy Bristol - which puts on an average of three or four shows a week - helping to book the heavy roster of acts and getting the word out about gigs. As punters, it’s easy to overlook the meticulous planning and dedication that goes into organising our favourite gigs. Part of Andy’s role at Sip the Juice is to work closely with external agencies to try and secure that golden Friday or Saturday night gig that most of us hope for. “I work closely with people like Diplomats of Sound to see what they’ve got coming up, so I can try and secure the best date and price with them. Sometimes it can be a struggle, because bigger cities can generally afford to pay more money for a weekend gig. “When you’re promoting a night on social media, you often

see people complaining if a gig lands on a Wednesday, but unfortunately it’s usually because it’s the only date we could either get or afford. I think most people respect that now though. “We’ve started doing earlier shows to avoid people missing out. We were originally doing club night shows that went on till late, but if it’s a mid-week show we tend to do earlier shows now with an after party at a local venue, which seems to be working pretty well.” Most promoters will tell you that they’ve come across a few bumps in the road when putting on music events, and Andy’s had his fair share. “It’s the worst feeling when you haven’t done that well and you’re out of pocket. You might find yourself having to go down to the cash point to draw out money from your own personal savings, but that’s just the reality of it. Thankfully, that doesn’t happen often though. “The best part for me is during the middle of the main act’s performance when the show’s just going off, because that’s when you know it’s all gone to plan.” After bringing some of the finest live hip hop acts to Bristol

over the past five years, Sip the Juice have certainly made a name for themselves, but where does Andy see the future of Sip the Juice? “We’re at a point where we want to be more selective with the shows we do. We try not to repeat shows, but we’ve become friends with some of the artists, because they love coming back to Bristol. Jeru has been here three or four times! “Now I’m working at O2 Academy, it would be great if I can put on events internally and do a few big shows at the Academy, who we’ve been affiliated with in the past. “Saying that though, we still like to do small parties, just like we did when we started. Sometimes it’s good to put on the smaller nights just to have a DJ with your mates. It doesn’t matter if it’s 1000 people or 100 people, you still get the same buzz when people are having a good time.”
