Molly Anne
The Correspondents
Gloucestershire-born musician Molly-Anne has firmly established herself on the Bristol circuit in the past year, fusing elements of country, folk, indie and soul to create her own incredibly moreish sound. Her Molly-Anne’s simultaneously sweet yet grown up vocals are accompanied by her own acoustic guitar and harmonica. Drawing on her own experiences, Molly-Anne pens deeply personal lyrics, which can be heard in the intimate delivery of her vocals and vocables. Nitelife debuted her brilliant demo track Young Fever last year, which has since received airplay on BBC Introducing, and 2018 has seen her gigging relentlessly across the South West. You can catch her this month supporting Noble Jacks at The Louisiana.
The Correspondents are vocalist Mr Bruce and producer Chucks. They formed in South London in 2007 and within two years had taken their hi-octane genre-blending dance music from house parties to festival main stages. Their live show is something to behold, earning a place in the Telegraph’s top ten Glastonbury highlights two years running. The monochromatic Mr Bruce brings the personality of a 10-piece ska band, while Chucks takes the audience on a journey through a multitude of genres from jazz and blues to the nether regions of electro and drum and bass. Last year saw the release of their second album Foolishman, which they bring to Bristol’s Exchange this March. Chucks answers our 10 questions ahead of the must-see show.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I’m a yoga teacher in training and a barista during the day. My dream is to tour my music internationally, but I’d settle for making wicked coffees and teaching yoga if that doesn’t happen.

HARVEY CAUSON
New kid on the block Harvey Causon has been turning heads in the music industry with his velvety, soulful voice and authentic blend of atmospheric instrumentation, dulcet guitar tones and glitching electronica. Having moved to Bristol from his hometown of Norwich in 2016, Harvey has slowly been building himself a local fan base and at a mere 20 years old his level of creativity, determination and sheer raw talent is hardly possible to conceive. It was Harvey’s self-produced Introspect EP released at the end of 2016 that inducted him to a number of one-to-watch lists. The collection of songs inspired by indie, soul, jazz, hip hop and rhythm-driven electronica was an impressive first glimpse into what to expect from the burgeoning songwriter and producer.
my sound is definitely maturing A distinctive voice combined with hypnotic grooves and delicate lyricism earned him attention from some big names in the business, including Mercury Prize nominee Loyle Carner, who offered Harvey an opening slot at the Norwich leg of his Autumn 2016 tour after hearing the Cabrakid remix of his track Systems. It wasn’t long before the success of Introspect also culminated in a place on Bristol label Leisure Records’ roster, where he released his next single Frisson in 2017, along with a masterful rework of Alliance, which he demoed on his debut EP. Harvey’s latest release, Worn You, is a track from his forthcoming collaborative EP with flatmate and producer Gabriel Gifford, formerly known as Allergy Kid and one half of hip hop duo Cabrakid. As well as the remix on his first EP,

Gabriel was one of two musicians to remix Frissons, the other being breakout Bristol musician Henry Green. Worn You is the first fully collaborative work from the duo, and came about by happy accident. While Harvey was writing on piano in his bedroom, Gabriel was working on his own beats next door. The two sounds melded together and an epiphany moment happened. The resulting song offers up ambient piano, unusual chords, dub-tinged percussion and mellifluous vocals we can’t get enough of. We caught up with Harvey as he took some rare time away from making music to talk about his whirlwind year, the forthcoming EP and what’s in store for 2018. Calm and understated, it is clear that this talented youngster is diving head first into his music career with an enthusiasm and determination that is rarely paralleled. So far, Harvey has managed to establish himself as an artist whilst keeping everything within a small circle of friends and acquaintances. Understandably, he is eager to maintain this high degree of creative autonomy and keep a DIY approach for as long as possible. He tells us about his and Gabriel’s plans to help create a scene for themselves here in Bristol by creating their own independent record label, to release their own projects, as well as some of their friends. ‘We want to have this blanket name that we can all individually release music under. Myself and Gabe have this idea for a record label that we’ll call Off-Kilter. We want to create something in Bristol that links with Norwich, as a lot of us come from that end of the country including Maya Law, who is someone that we would like to release music with.’ But in the meantime, their full collaborative EP, titled Murphy’s Hand, is due to drop imminently. Judging from their first release, we can expect a sonic marriage made in heaven with their fresh combination of powerful instrumentation, sumptuous vocals, dexterous beats and pristine production. On the EP’s title track, Harvey explains: ‘Murphy’s Hand is about our friend Frasier, who is a crazy, lovely boy. He never had a phone on him and never got involved in social media, so the song is about how much we appreciate that about him.’ This collaborative release aside, Harvey has also been gaining a lot of attention for his solo material, receiving airtime from BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and 6 Music. The talented musician has also earned support slots for the likes of Puma Blue at the Crofters Rights, Hazel English at The Louisiana, and Goan Dogs at Thekla last month, as well as completing a Maida Vale session for BBC Introducing in the West as part of their annual showcase of local talent. ‘Playing at Maida Vale was a massive highlight for me. We had such a good time. We were warned it was going to be a brilliant and amazing experience and it really was. The engineers and the history of that place is great.’ While it’s easy to get swept up in the production side of Harvey’s music, his lyrical talent is undeniable. He
explains the inspiration for Frisson, a romantic term for the goosebumps you can get from listening to music that touches you in one way or another. Harvey was interested in seeing whether there was a way of inducing that reaction, and whether or not people use that as a barometer for what makes good music. ‘I was doing a lot of research at the time about how harmony works anthropologically, and how all harmony and melody is based on rhythm and polyrhythms and how they’re all sped up in different ratios. It just interested me to think about how music can be perceived so differently. For example, how you can love something more than I can. ‘Different cultures around the world grow up to different melodic structures’, Harvey continues, ‘like reggae music is very dissonant and based on minor chords and minor progressions and they see that music as being very happy, whereas we see major chords as being happy. I wanted to explore more into what that distinction was and why different people around the world are affected differently by music. ‘I wanted to see whether it was down to bass, for example, or lyrical relation to you that evokes past memories and nostalgia. Though thinking about all this stuff fucked me up a bit, so I thought, let’s shut it down and try putting it all into a song. ‘The first lyric of the song “servants to the thing that makes the blackbirds sing” is kind of me saying, you know what, none of us can really understand any of this fully, so we’ve just got to accept that we’re servants to the earth. So just enjoy music, rather than try to analyse it.’ Harvey’s well-thought lyrical content, alongside his tendering electronic sequences, flicking guitar strings and rich vocals, sees him set for a fruitful and interesting career and we’re nothing but excited to learn what else he’s set to achieve. Although having only appeared on the radar last year, Harvey’s success has been pretty immediate and there is no doubt his sound is still maturing. ‘I listen back to my music a lot and people take the piss out of me for it. It’s just a weird, obsessive thing that I have, where I compare myself to what I’m making now and yeah, my sound is definitely maturing. Especially with Ben and Gabe’s influences, Ben has really brought in a Radiohead, Yussef Kamaal-esque jazz feel to what I make, and then Gabe has a lo-fi hip hop background.‘ Harvey’s sound has been described as forward-thinking and filled to the brim with raw ideas, with nods to other contemporary producers like Jamie Isaac, Mount Kimbie and James Blake. ‘I respect artists like James Blake and Mount Kimbie for their sonic landscapes and just field recordings and finding new sounds. I love Nils Frahm for doing that as well. And I think Reggie Snow’s new album is pretty cool, it’s out there and different.’
Though with one of the most distinctive voices to arrive on the scene in recent years, it is clear that Harvey is not trying to follow in anyone’s footsteps. Harvey explains that he likes to stay on top of what’s new and doesn’t want to restrict his music in any way by labelling it. ‘I don’t want to have a specific label, my sound is still changing. People call it post-dubstep, like Mount Kimbie, but I think that’s just like calling something post-modern. Why can’t it be the start of a new genre? It would be pretty cool to be part of a new scene and I think electronic music is inevitably the way forward as science is taking over. I come under that label, I think, because I like synths and I can’t really afford to buy nice ones, so I just make a lot of weird sounds on my computer using VSTs.’
live performance should not be a replica of what you’ve released Harvey has clearly been doing something right, as the success of his debut release led him to see out his first festival season with appearances at The Great Escape, Dot To Dot and 2000 Trees Festival. With a return to The Great Escape this year and another Maida Vale session hopefully in the pipeline, it’s obvious that something about Harvey Causon’s live show leave you wanting. ‘Working out the electronic songs can be a pig sometimes, but it’s something I like doing – finding ways to play our electronic songs live and making them slightly different, as I think live performance should not be a replica of what you’ve released. I love playing in a band it’s important for me to not have session musicians playing my produced songs, it’s got to be friends that I like playing with.’ Harvey’s upward trajectory looks pretty solidly set to continue with more solo material to be released alongside another busy festival season set for 2018, including a main stage performance at Nozstock. It seems only a matter of time before Harvey Causon’s superb songwriting, heart-melting vocals and skilful production has found a larger audience. So, keep an ear out for more Bristol shows following the upcoming release of Murphy’s Law. ‘Hopefully I’ll just keep putting out music the same way that I am, and hopefully people will enjoy it, my fan base will grow and I’ll be able to play more gigs.’

MØ
The Danish pop star with punk roots, Karen Marie Ørsted is better known by her stage name MØ. She is part of a generation of artists including Grimes and Lana Del Rey, who are legitimately making pop music cool again.
MØ followed up strong, with two solo bangers from her forthcoming second album, Final Song and Nights With You – a beautiful ode to her best friend and a hugely refreshing antidote to the girl-loves-boy industry standard.
MØ released her brilliant debut album, No Mythologies to Follow in 2014. It features the Diplo-produced track XXX 88 – our first taste of a musical partnership that would shortly make MØ a household name the globe over.
‘It’s a song that I wanted to write for my bestie. We’ve been friends since we were three years old. It’s about that love that you can feel for a very, very strong friendship that you have for many years. It’s totally a love song, but not necessarily in a romantic way and I think it’s so awesome that people have interpreted in all kinds of ways, that’s how it should be.’
Bringing her over to his dancehall-inspired Major Lazer project in 2015, MØ co-wrote and provided the vocals for Lean On, which turned out to be the breakthrough track for them both. It reached number two in the UK singles chart and smashed Spotify’s record for most streamed song.
the most radical thing you can do is really be honest and be yourself MØ featured on another Major Lazer track the following year, this time sharing vocals with Justin Bieber. Unsurprisingly, it was a number one hit and propelled MØ even further into the global limelight.
MØ’s next release was her surprise six-track EP, When I was Young in October last year. Although she was involved in the writing process on both Major Lazer collaborations and wholly retained her artistic integrity, understandably, she wanted to put some distance between the craziness of those record breaking, chart topping collaborations and her second solo album. ‘I felt like I needed to do a little EP before I could go full on into the album finishing process. So many years had passed since my debut album and with all these collaborations and singles I had put out, I just felt like I needed a little sum up before going all in on an album, because it’s a big deal for me. I put myself into these things, they’re personal to me, and so I want to make sure that I can digest it and that people can digest it.’
The two singles and EP partner the tropical, synth driven sounds we’ve been hearing since her work with Major Lazer, with the lyrical exploration and vocal depth that fans of her first album fell in love with. Though MØ explains that this was a natural sonic direction, rather than taking cues from the trend-setting mega producer.
I’m a super fan of pop music, but also a super fan of everything alternative and ugly and dark ‘Since 2015, I’ve felt that all pop music has sounded a little bit like Major Lazer to be honest. It has that kind of tropical, dancehall, EDM sound, drops and vocal drops and all of these things, which has been really awesome and cool for a couple of years, but I feel like the sound landscape is moving towards something different now. ‘Most of all, what Major Lazer inspires in me is this constant search for new sounds and new ways of doing things, pushing it and wanting to be better and being progressive all the time. That’s the biggest thing I’ve taken from working with him – a way of looking at music and the process, basically.’

MØ has openly cited Spice Girls as a major influence, with an excellent cover of Say You’ll be There on her first album; and yet it’s also no surprise to learn that before becoming a solo artist, MØ performed as part of punk activist duo Mor. The two opposing influences combine beautifully to inject some punk personality into modern pop music. Her cool girl aesthetic transcends well beyond her stage presence into the content and delivery of her songs.
what Major Lazer inspires in me is this constant search for new sounds and new ways of doing things ‘Most of all, I want to make sure to put myself into it. Me as a private person, Karen, I’m a super fan of pop music, but also a super fan of everything alternative and ugly and dark, like punk music. That’s what I always strive to do.’ Growing up in a tiny village on the Danish island of Funen, MØ crafted a thick skin and learned at an early age to embrace her otherness, an attribute found in every great musician throughout history. ‘I’m really happy about where I come from because I think being trapped in the suburbs and being in a school where people didn’t get me was a good way for me to learn how to work through that struggle of being misunderstood. That whole thing of learning to stand by your differences, learning to live with that and embracing it to make yourself even stronger.’ MØ will be bringing her tour to Bristol’s O2 Academy this April, where we can hope to hear more from the forthcoming album, which she assures us is coming soon. ‘The album is the big thing for 2018. It’s been four and a half years since my debut album so I’m really just stoked and excited to get everything done and roll it out. It’s going to be a relief, almost. ‘I’m excited to come back to Bristol. I’ll be playing some new songs and bringing a new production and lights with me.’

AKUA NARU
Akua Naru’s long awaited new album The Blackest Joy drops at the end of this month, with Bristol being one of the first stops on the album tour. It’s the MC’s first release since 2015’s The Miner’s Canary and her second foray into self producing and self releasing on her own independent label, The Urban Era. Akua blazed into the pages of hip hop history with her groundbreaking debut album A Journey Aflame in 2011, a substantial 14-track album spanning the realms of classic hip hop, jazz, soul and blues with traditional African rhythmic influences trickling through.. With a flow to rival any hip hop great and the propheticism of a poet, Akua’s entire body of work speaks from her experience as an African American women in a world that would try to quiet her.
just me waking up and opening my eyes, that’s a protest right there Now settled in Cologne, the MC explains why after a successful first album she began producing her own beats for both The Miner’s Canary and The Blackest Joy: ‘Mainly it was about me wanting to find ways to really communicate what I wanted to say, not only through words
PREVIEW // 33 but sonically. I wanted to really put my imprint on the sound and let it really be me. It was a progression for me to grow and see who I could be in this role. ‘I don’t know how well I can measure my own growth while I’m still in the body of it. I would need 20 years to look back on this experience and then I could say, “yes, I grew a lot in that time”, but in the moments that I experience daily as I work on music, there are some things that became easier for me, and I guess that means that I have grown.’ Akua released the first track from the forthcoming album last October, My Mother’s Daughter. Featuring traditional Mina vocals and a heavier African influence than we’ve seen in Akua’s previous releases, the video for the track opens with a subtitle ‘For the ancestors’. However, ‘for’ is not to be misinterpreted, Akua makes it clear that she doesn’t need to speak on behalf of anyone. ‘We always have voices, it’s just that there are institutions and people who are committed to trying to silence us, but the voice has always been there. I’m in this body so I feel that it’s very important to speak from what it means to live this experience. They say, “Speak, even when your voice shakes”. ‘I’ve had wonderful experiences and I’ve found that people have shown up in the midnight hour when I speak. My music is always about my people and I feel that that’s very important, but there has never been a time in history where we didn’t have a voice or when things weren’t spoke, it’s just that there has always been resistance; that’s the constant, which is really unfortunate, but it is what it is.’ Talking about the forthcoming album as a whole, My Mother’s Daughter sets a good example for what’s to follow. As always, the record will set forth an exploration of Akua’s own story. ‘It centres black women’s experience in the diaspora. This album has a lot more African influence. I study history, so there’s always conversation about where we’ve been, who we were and what that means as it collapses itself on the present moment, every day, right now. ‘Spiritually it’s about love, it’s about a pursuit towards justice, it’s about navigating the politics of our current reality, it’s about carving a space to try and understand what the future looks like, it’s about a lot. ‘With rap, it’s line for line. I could be bringing you into a space where you experience so much from one line to the next, metaphor to metaphor, simile to simile.’ Hip hop and jazz, the two most overt genres that Akua’s music occupies, is traditionally protest music and dissention is something she appears to actively embody in her work. ‘There are times where I have a statement that I specifically want to convey. There are some songs where that was very important – I knew it might be provocative – but I had to say it, because it needed to be said for whatever reason. There are other times when I’m just writing and whatever is coming out is coming out. ‘I’m a black woman making hip hop music and living in this world – just me waking up and opening my eyes, that’s a protest right there, that’s resistance. Just to love, just to laugh, is an act of resistance.’ It’s pretty clear that Akua is an artist that creates from a need to create, but on what she hopes people will take from her music, she says:
there has never been a time in history where we didn’t have a voice or when things weren’t spoke ‘I’m happy to know that people are listening. And if people can listen closely and really try to understand the world that I’ve created within this music and if they relate to it, that’s a blessing to me.’ The Blackest Joy is released on 27 April, just a few days before her Bristol show on 2 May at The Fleece, where the audience will be among the first to hear the album played live. ‘We’ve never played the new album before to date, so by the time I get to Bristol it will be maybe the fourth time we’ve played it, so that’s going to be interesting. You can expect to hear new music, you’re going to hear some hip hop, some jazz, everything in between. I’m bringing the fire to the UK. This is what I really love to do, so I’m going to come and just bring everything on the stage.’

GHETTO FUNK / SHINDIG WEEKENDER The UK festival circuit is one of the strongest in the world, with crowds flocking from all corners to attend one of the countless spectacular summer events. But with such a strong selection of festivals comes heavy competition, and a challenge to stand head and shoulders above the rest.
Rest assured though, Shindig Festival have got that covered. Originating from Bristol-based, award-winning record label Ghetto Funk, Shindig provides a weekend of entertainment ranging from music, to circus, spoken word and comedy, for festival lovers looking to get away from the sometimes-manic whirlwinds conjured by your typical major festival crowds. As one of the earlier festivals in the season, taking place outside Bristol over the May bank holiday, Shindig aims to set the bar higher each year, making it a tough act to follow for other festival organisers. As they are about to embark on their fifth event, the once boutique festival that began as a party for close friends, continues to flourish both in its capacity and entertainment offering. Shortly before Shindig announced that tickets for this year’s festival had had sold out, Nitelife met up with founders Will and Simon to learn about the transition from label heads to festival founders, and what makes Shindig Weekender so beautifully special. Will and Simon first began working together in 2010, when Will approached Simon with an idea to create a blog called Ghetto Funk for other like-minded DJs – those with an appreciation for mid tempo funk music with big basslines, or as they called it ‘party breaks’, a term that’s now synonymous with Ghetto Funk. From there, the adventures of Ghetto Funk spiralled, growing from a blog to a fully fledged record label. Before long, Will and Simon were running a multiaward-winning record label, playing to 10,000 people at Glastonbury’s Hell Stage between the likes of Roni Size and A Guy Called Gerald, and even began touring their own Ghetto Funk Nightclub venue across the UK festival circuit.
We realised pretty early on that there was a massive gap in the market for a festival to actually cater for the demographic we like to call “old skool ravers with kids”
‘The next logical step was to set something up independently’, explains Will. ‘In 2014 we came up with the concept of starting our own festival. When we first started Shindig, it was very much just a few tents with a couple of DJs off our label playing to our friends in a field.’ Despite the rapid growth in capacity, jumping from 1,500 to 7,000 in five years, Shindig continues to bring in a niche crowd of festival goers. Will defines the type of crowd their specially-tailored festival attracts: ‘Shindig generally brings in an older crowd of people who enjoy a good cocktail, but also like starting early and finishing early. We realised pretty early on that there was a massive gap in the market for a festival to actually cater for the demographic we like to call “old skool ravers with kids”.’ ‘It’s for people who have a passion for music but don’t want to continue going to the large capacity events’, says Simon. ‘A lot of people have said “oh you should put this DJ on to bring in a younger crowd”, but that’s not what we’re about. ‘The type of crowd Shindig Festival attracts is really friendly and easy-going‘, Simon continues. ‘We don’t ever want to change what we do; we just want to attract even more of a similar crowd instead. To be honest, I think if we suddenly brought in a twenty-year-old crowd, it would upset the whole equilibrium of the event.’ ‘When we first started putting on Shindig, it was a festival for friends and friends of friends, but last year was a bit of a turning point for us,’ Will reflects. ‘On the Friday night of the festival, we were sat having a production chat, and then all of a sudden, we both turned around and said, who are all these people?’ ‘So many positives came from that festival though,’ Simon chips in. ‘Beforehand, we didn’t know if having so many people was going to work, but we ended up getting the perfect result. It was a really friendly crowd and the people who had previously come to the festival every year got along really well with the newcomers.’ With this year’s sell-out event just around the corner, Will and Simon talk us through this year’s lineup and what the future holds for Shindig Weekender. ‘This year we’ve got headliners Soul II Soul and The Jungle Brothers’, says Will. ‘We’ve got a lot of old skool
UK hip hop this year as well, including Black Twang and London Posse, who’ll be doing their first festival set in twenty years. On top of that, we’ve got the likes of Smooth and Turrell, a Cut Chemist AV set, The Cuban Brothers, and special guest Opiuo. ‘We’re bringing a lot of old skool to the festival this year. On Saturday we’ve got Altern-8 and Top Buzz, but these acts will be on in the afternoon, so if parents are there with their kids, they don’t have to wait till four in the morning to see a headline DJ!’ Simon adds, ‘We’re introducing comedy to the festival for the first time this year, with Phill Jupitus and Mark Thomas doing full-length shows. We’ve also got one of the series producers from Planet Earth dropping by to give a talk. We had them by last year as well, but we worked out it was the perfect hangover cure for people needing something relaxing to do whilst they recover from the night before.’
It’s always been and always will be about the music ‘When we first started, we blew all the entertainment budget on musicians, as traditionally we thought that’s what sold the tickets’, Will admits. ‘But now Shindig is more established, we know that people come along for the experience as a whole, from spoken word to poetry, comedy, talks and circus.’ When a festival grows in such a short time frame, the integrity of the event is always at stake, although Simon and Will explain what makes their event so alluring. ‘Each year the festival keeps becoming more like a family of people that some refer to as the Shindig Family,’ says Simon. ‘A lot of people meet at the festival and end up hanging out all year round. When they return the following year, they meet new friends and the family expands even more. ‘We’ve had engagements, babies conceived and all sorts at our festival. There is even a baby with Shindig as their middle name! There has been some really magical moments from Shindig and that surpasses anything else.’ ‘It’s such a beautiful, laid back and relaxed festival’ says Will. ‘There isn’t any sort of attitude or aggression associated with it. Everything we do encompasses love and the love of music. The basis of Ghetto Funk being about community has really transferred onto the festival.’ Despite the continuing growth of the festival, Simon and Will have big plans for Ghetto Funk as well, which remains a central focus for the pair. Their plans begin with re-opening a record shop. ‘We are going back to having a record shop because vinyl is very popular again and we’ve still got a lot of stock’, Simon explains. ‘We’re planning on re-pressing and releasing a lot of new stuff too. The plan is to open a retail shop in Bath and have our offices above it, so we will run Shindig from the offices and have the Ghetto Funk record shop downstairs – still linking the two together.’ Will adds, ‘We want to help build a community and a hub again, because it’s always been and always will be about the music. That’s what brings everyone together. Music is the reason me and Simon started talking all those years ago, and I feel now it has come full circle. Everything we do will always go back to that family ethos we’ve been carrying, right from the early days of Ghetto Funk. We’re all in this together and we’ll continue to help each other.’
