J STAR + SPIKEY T
Following the 101% Rave Co-ordinators’ success with their 101% UK Garage special in June, they return to the scene of the crime for a bank holiday Friday drum & bass special. Expect the 101% resident DJs to drop all the classic bass-bombs, from Goldie to Roni Size, from Hazard to High Contrast, all night long. Advance tickets only £1.01p.
The underground remixer, J Star will be playing on stage with Spikey Tee for a very special night. 47SOUL Band
47SOUL is an electro-mijwez, shamstep, choubi band. Members Z the People, El Far3i, Walaa Sbeit, El Jehaz have rapidly amassed fans in the Middle East and Europe by blasting the electric Arabic dabke sound through underground music scenes. Originally formed in Amman in Jordan, the group overcame physical and logistical challenges and came together to play electronic Palestinian street music. 47SOUL writes and performs to speak about freedom of movement, whether that’s sparking new dance styles or singing about breaking down border check points. For the past two years the band has based itself between Jordan and the UK, to spread their new wave of Arabic music. Their sound is rooted in Arabic Dabke, the celebration dance music from the Bilad Al-Sham area; the name for the land that spans Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan. 47SOUL hypes it up with analog synthesizers, drum machines, epic guitar lines, and tripped-out English and Arabic verses from the four singers. The electronic and urban influence in their music takes them far out of the ‘world music’ context and places them in the genre of a new generation of international electronic/hip hop acts that are reinventing the old for the future. 47SOUL call this new sound is Shamstep
Upcoming shows 23 August, Make Sunday Special Stapleton Road, Trinity Centre
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Those damn poached eggs are hard to do. 2. Favourite track of all time? Ask for an encore at the next 47SOUL gig, you might just hear it. 3. Worst chart song at the moment? Hahaha! We just leave it be. 4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? We played at Glastonbury Festival this year, and had the pleasure of listening to The Skints. Brilliant stage performance. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? We are Shamstep qualified.. that’s it. It’s all about the Shamstep. 6. What was the last book you read? ‘Perform or Else’ by Jon McKenzie. Needless to say, we choose to perform. Great book.
7. Favourite thing on TV? It’s all about that internet for us now. It’s how we met as band members. How we share. How we learn. TV has no part. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Visa applications. We used to joke by saying it’s not a 47SOUL tour if no one gets detained for at least a few hours at the border. Ha! It’s too true to be funny anymore. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... Meeting backstage before each gig for a couple of hours is a sacred ritual for us. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Tomorrow we are playing Trafalgar Square as part of the Shubbak Festival. Iconic place, we are all very excited.

REWIND // BEST OF LAST MONTH
‘Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde’ tour // The Fleece
‘Oh Shit!’ The Pharcyde returned to Bristol last month for the third year running, to deliver another incredible showcase of the timeless 1992 debut album Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde at The Fleece.
what really made the Bizarre Ride set memorable was the twist of humanity and humour in their delivery It wouldn’t be a true Bizarre Ride showcase without Fatlip, Slimkid3 and J-Sw!ft, so it was a blessing to see all founding members alongside LA Jay and K-Natural take to the stage for the opening track ‘Oh Shit!’. You only needed to witness their pulsing energy on stage for five minutes to know that these artists still have a lot of love for the music they created,
24
and 23 years later the MC’s master perfection as their flow still sounds like the first listen of their iconic hip-hop album. After an explosive start, the collective effortlessly took you on a journey through Bizarre Ride and included a couple of extras in between. Hits from the album that got the crowd jumping included ‘If I were President’ and ‘Pack The Pipe’, but naturally the entire venue raised the roof when the favourite classic ‘Passin’ Me By’ dropped and gripped fans as they sang along to the chorus. Not only were we presented with favourites from the album, but The Pharcyde members didn’t hesitate to show fans their solo material, including J Sw!ft’s Adventures of Negro Kanevil and Slimkid3’s collaborative project with Jurassic 5 beat maker DJ Nu-Mark. Each verse was delivered like it just had its first breath of fresh air, but what really made the Bizarre Ride set memorable was the twist of humanity and humour in their delivery. There was Four Tops style side-stepping dancing and even a bit of play fighting. To be honest, some moments the delivery felt so genuine, it was like perching on the end of your mate’s bed as you watch them jam in their bedroom. You couldn’t help but be drawn in to the rarity of seeing the artists’ true personalities shine through the delivery of their music.
NItelife Bristol
Every member was sure to leave an ever lasting impression on the crowd; from J-Sw!ft taking phones off eager fans and filming himself rapping into the camera, to K-Natural singling out a girl at the front for being a true fan by singing along to every word. There were also moments of education from K-Natural throughout the set, reminding the crowd they were the real hip-hop heads whilst simultaneously quizzing members of the audience on their hip-hop knowledge from D.I.T.C to Tribe Called Quest. Slimkid3 also had the crowd raise their hands in the air, to educate and pay tribute to the late Pharcyde producer and all-round hip-hop pioneer J Dilla, whilst LA Jay dropped a Dilla beat for fans to appreciate. The entire set was hooked up to a VJ set to give that little bit extra to the show. Although it was basic, the snappy video edits that synced to each track was a happy bonus and another platform for the MCs to advertise their Instagram accounts, Twitter hashtags and all the other social media shout outs you can’t seem to escape from gigs these days. When it was time for the hip-hop veterans to leave the stage the atmosphere of the venue was at an all-time high. Once again, Bristol was taken on one hell of a bizarre ride to The Pharcyde. Until next year – we hope.

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
Turbowolf
Bristol-based alt rockers Turbowolf consists of Chris Georgiadis, Andy Ghosh, Lianna Lee Davies and Blake Davies, the band have just released their second album Those Hands and currently enjoying the rock heavy album’s success. Nitelife got in touch with vocalist and synth player Chris G, to get to know more about Turbowolf and talk a bit about the band and what’s in the pipeline for the near future. You only need to take one listen of their second album Two Hands to recognise exactly what Turbowolf are achieving with their technique. “We’re kind of like a rock band on a basic level, but the idea is to push things forward a little bit and try do something different in the rock world. When asked which bands influences have helped shape their style of rock, Chris replied: “We amalgamate lots of different sounds into our sound, ranging from punk to rock music, but psychedelic is probably the strongest of influences. We tend to try and take influence from all kinds of places though; like film, soundtracks, synth sounds and even John Carpenter’s old stuff.” Forming in 2007, Turbowolf never anticipated such a rapid growth of success from the music they initially created just
26
to play a few gigs and give them something to do. “We didn’t have any intention to keep going really, it was just to have some fun and to try and make something new.” At the time of their formation, Chris wanted the band to ‘sort out’ the boredom from the current music being played at the time. “We were quite bored with the rock music at the time, so we ended up buying some synths and pulled together some kind of disco, punk rock.” The success of the second album Two Hands can be seen by the sheer number of tour dates and YouTube hits. “It’s seems the album has gone down really well with our existing fans which is important, but I think we’ve gained a whole bunch of new fans too. To be honest we were never really concerned with what reaction the album might get, because I guess selfishly we were happy with the album as individuals in the band.” Judging by the current reaction from this album and the upcoming plans for the group, the labour of love that’s gone into this release has clearly paid off for the group. The Turbowolf charm sounds like something you might expect to crop up in the live music capital Austin, TX, so it
wasn’t a surprise to hear when Chris announced the band’s first tour of The United States this September. “We’re getting more plays over in the States now on the radio, but now we’re looking at performing over there, it’s getting a bit daunting because it’s like starting all over again and it’s such a big place!” But despite the excitement for their USA tour, Chris still has a lot of love for the city and the musical diversity that helped birth the creation of Turbowolf. “I think the great thing about Bristol is that it’s a very creative place, partly due to the fact it’s relatively cheap for artists to work part-time and afford to live, so they’re able to focus on their music. “Plus, there’s a young student population who come in to study from all over the world and they bring along different cultures and musical ideas and create exciting new sounds.” Bands like Zun Zun Egui and The St. Pierre Snake Invasion spring to Chris’s mind when he thinks of local talent that has helped shape the sound of the city. “Bristol just has a certain vibe, you just can’t pin point what it is about it”. With so much praise from fans in the UK and plans to take
NItelife Bristol
on the USA next, we were curious to know where Chris saw Turbowolf in the near future. “Hopefully we would have made a bit of a dent in America that’s a big one for us at the moment. Generally though, we’d like to be able to still be doing it. It’s so hard to be in a band for a lot of reasons, but mainly the financial stress of it all, so I just hope we can be in a place where we can still play music and still tour and still make albums. That would be ideal. “It’s all about experience and making the most out of the chances we get. We always want to try and squeeze everything we can out of the experience and we certainly will in America.” You can expect to find Turbowolf this summer at a bunch of festivals before finishing off the season at this year’s Reading and Leeds Festival. But before we wave goodbye to Bristol’s local treasures as they set sail across the pond, be sure to catch them at The Exchange this August to be blown away by their fusion of psychedelic rock sounds.

PREVIEW
Arcadia Bristol 4-5 September
This September, 13,000 people will descend on Queen Square to party for two nights beneath a giant, robotic, fire-breathing arachnid – better known as the Arcadia Spider. In a match made in heaven, Bristol’s theatre and robotics superpower, Arcadia Spectacular has teamed up with the mighty Team Love for a one-off city centre event: Arcadia Bristol. Team Love, who bring us Love Saves the Day, the Love Inn and various other projects including the Wow stage at Glastonbury, are managing the line-up and event production (two things they’re pretty good at by now). And Arcadia Spectacular are bringing the theatre performers, aerialists, pyrotechnics and massive fucking spider.
This is going to be a one off Believe it or not, Arcadia Bristol is a Green Capital-funded project. Team Love co-founder Tom Paine explains: “Arcadia fits massively in with ethos of Bristol 2015 because it’s made out of 95 percent recycled materials and takes negative technology – military technology – and turns it into a positive thing.” Almost as exciting as the stage is the line up, which gives a strong
28

nod toward Bristol talent as well as international names. “We wanted to make the two days different, like we do at Love Saves the Day,” says Tom. “Friday is a bit more bass-y, with a reggae influence.” Friday sees Roni Size headlining, with dance music pioneers Leftfield, original junglist Congo Natty and in a surprise turn, Team Love are bringing the infamous DJ Derek out of retirement one last time. “When DJ Derek was retiring, he said: ‘If anything big comes up, give me a call, I might be up for it’. So we called him up – we thought it was a bit of a long shot – and said we are bringing Arcadia to Bristol and he said, ‘alright then.’” On Saturday evening the line-up switches to a dance vibe, with house and techno from Bristol’s Eats Everything and GotSome (with a bit more bass), as well as sets from Annie Mac and Radio 1’s Monki. “We wanted to showcase some Bristolian talent with Eats Everything and GotSome,” says Tom. “And Annie Mac is kind of the queen of dance music at the moment.” Bristol is the first UK city to host the Arcadia Spider outside of a festival, and chances are, you won’t see it again. “This is going to be a one off,” Tom promises.

One of the liveliest bars on Stokes Croft, you can safely assume that on any given weekend the line-up at Attic Bar is going to be punching way above its weight, with recent special guests including Musical Youth and Kenny Ken. In fact, Attic Bar recently made it onto a Guardian list of 10 best clubs in the UK, sitting alongside the likes of Fabric London and Sub Club in Glasgow. Reggae fans can thank Vikki for the Attic’s musical leaning. “I think ultimately whoever does the booking has a personal touch on what they book,” says Vikki.
“For years I managed restaurants and bars, and I got into events when I was running the Mud Dock down in Exeter. It didn’t work so well as a restaurant as the one in Bristol, so we had to turn our hand to doing events, we had a really good comedy club and brought a lot of DJs and bands down.
daily basis. Bristol is brimming with creative, talented people. So it’s really nice to constantly be planning events with them.”
“Then I started doing promotions outside of that. That was about 16 years ago. When I moved to Bristol, we did quite a lot of promotion at the old Thekla, which was a really good platform for everybody because it was affordable for promoters to hire.
“I get inundated with bands and DJs who want gigs and I try to get back to as many of them as possible and give them a good listen to.
“I came to work at the Attic Bar about 7 years ago and originally, it was a very part time job. I held the diary, but it was very quiet in that part of Stokes Croft at the time. We were working really hard to get people to come down and almost overnight Stokes Croft became a buzzing place. The Canteen opened up and all those bars, the Pipe and Slippers, The Social...” Now, Vikki works full time programming the music at Attic Bar. Most Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday’s there is a big night on, so it’s a lot of work she tells us. “There’s a lot of admin! I mainly just do admin during the day Monday to Friday and a lot of phone calls.
As much as I try to make it a wide spectrum of genres, reggae was my great love for a lot of years – I used to do a bit of DJing.”
“On the weekend, it’s more admin during the day and then down to the Attic for sound checks and doors, and just making sure everything runs smoothly.”
That being said, there are sometimes more unusual acts like Beans on Toast, Joe Driscoll and The Egg headlining on a weekend.
Coming up this August, Vikki has bagged another big booking, with reggae icon VC set to play on the 7th. .
“We don’t go down the metal or the rock route, because there are venues in Bristol who do that well. I do feel like a lot of genres work here, but it will always be reggae heavy. “I guess I’ve always had my hand in some sort of music thing”, says Vikki.

“I used to play his record ‘Good Deeds’ every week in my set. So when I got that booking, it was like wow! Having an artist play in your venue when you used to play their records is amazing. “The best thing about my job is show time. You could be doing anything during the week when you’re doing admin. And all the really creative and talented people I’m dealing with on a
With such big headliners on the cards, support slots at The Attic are hot property.
“There are a lot of support slots going, but it has to fit in with the night. I’ll have a headliner and I’ll have to create a night around that. “It’s nice to watch people outgrow your venue and play the massive venues around town.” Finally, we asked Vikki for some words of advice for anyone hoping to follow in her footsteps: “I work with a lot of really amazing agents, and then I’ve just got a lot of contacts that you create over the years. Anybody that does my job, their contacts are their biggest asset and you make those from being around a long time. “I would say that it takes a while to actually make a living out of it, and to just keep going. Much of the job is about contacts and knowing all the ins and outs of the business, so if you just keep doing it, you’ll eventually get there. “
