China Bowls
Chelou
Meet female youth label Saffron Records’ first signing, China Bowls. The young singer has been working closely with her mentor, Bristol favourite Eva Lazarus, and now she is almost ready to release her first EP, Talk. China Bowls comes from a festival background with an infectious neo soul jazz vibe, experimental hip-hop influences and just a hint of gypsy swing. Playing across the country, from Colston Hall to Glastonbury, Boomtown and Bestival, she’s a storyteller in her own right and delivers both extensive solo sets and dynamic full band performances. Catch her next month supporting Bellatrix with Eva Lazarus & The Afronauts at The Lantern. Upcoming gigs The Lantern, 18 September
Emerging in 2014 with debut EP The Quiet, Chelou’s brand of electro-alt-indie quickly gained strong support from the likes of Tom Ravenscroft, Guy Garvey, Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music and Huw Stephens and Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1. Chelou collaborated with Maya Jane Coles on the track ‘Believe’ for her 2015 debut LP under her alter-alias Nocturnal Sunshine, and he’s been back in the studio with the production genius once again, with Coles co-producing on his upcoming debut album. The album’s first single, Don’t Hate on Me, dropped in July – and we can’t wait to hear more. Catch him next month at Crofters Rights… Upcoming gigs The Crofters Rights, 26 September

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
SHE MAKES WAR
It’s a cloudy Friday afternoon in Bristol and we’re meeting solo artist Laura Kidd, who you may better know as She Makes War. She’s been steadily making a name for herself on the Bristol live music scene and last month took the headline slot at Thekla’s Hold Stage at Harbour Festival. She Makes War’s music is best described as gloom-pop, where songs are journeys, diary entries or letters and are unabashedly emotional.
Shows can be so much more than turning up, playing and leaving. Sweet vocals are bolstered by an array of instruments that Laura plays herself. These include a guitar, a marching drum, a megaphone, a loop pedal, a sampler and a ‘sad ukulele’. Sprinklings of percussive instruments and wispy strings nod toward an ethereal sound, although that balloon is yanked firmly back to earth by Laura’s grounding lyrics. Thanks to her concise and evocative vocabulary, there is an intriguing shuffle between serious and mischievous which leave you feeling curious to hear more.
Talking to Laura, she is sparky, friendly and super smart; it’s no surprise she is able to write such thought provoking, sensitive songs. ‘I never write happy songs’, she says. ‘Though I have promised that I will try. But you have to have an element that it’s all going to fuck up soon...’ On speaking with Kidd about her influences we touch on Britpop acts such as Blur, Elastica, Echobelly and Sleeper. But it was The Bangles who first made her believe that music was something she could do. ‘The first band I saw that made me want to play guitar and bass were The Bangles – a defining moment when I was tiny’. As well as The Bangles, inspiration came from Kidd’s long-time idol, Tanya Donelly, who features on the third She Makes War album Direction of Travel, as well as in her music video for Paper Thin. ‘Her voice is so different and so unique. Getting to meet her and sing with her has been tremendously exciting’. It comes as no surprise that when she’s not making music, Kidd dabbles in plenty of other artistic mediums including origami, photography and painting, and that creativity is evident in her
dangerously captivating shows; live performances are where She Makes War really comes into her own. There is a powerful interactive element, which is no mean feat for a solo act. It is not uncommon for Kidd to walk solemnly through the crowd or crack jokes between songs. ‘I like the idea of giving the audience an experience; I want the audience to feel special’ says Kidd. ‘I learned that through watching stand up comedians. ‘Shows can be so much more than turning up, playing and leaving. I want people to feel like we’re doing the show together. I’m a person just like you are – it’s really important to not put people on pedestals.’ Kidd’s love for comedy and theatre reached a new level last year as she burgeoned into a fully-fledged stand up comedy act, entirely separate to She Makes War. Laura debuted her show Shit Girlfriend at the Edinburgh fringe festival, a show about why dating musicians is a nightmare. Although it’s hard to believe that Kidd herself is a shit girlfriend in any capacity. She couldn’t be less of a diva; her rider request is non-existent, especially given that she doesn’t drink before a show. ‘I take my shows really seriously – and anyway I’d probably lose all my equipment if I got a bit drunk!’
LOCAL TALENT // 23
Laura was born in Salisbury and moved to Bristol ‘on a whim’ four years ago. ‘I wanted to escape London. Coming from London to here, it’s seems small but so friendly. I love the fact that people can go to multiple gigs in one night. You can go to Thekla, then pop over to the Louisiana.’ With three albums under her belt already, plans for the fourth are well underway. ‘The first two albums were more about boys: my relationships, feelings and experiences with them. But the more recent album Direction of Travel was about growing older, parents, illness and losing people. ‘I wanted to explore the idea of trying to find a home, I felt like I never had a home to call my own and now I do, so I explored that.’
I never write happy songs. Kidd is closed about what we can expect from her fourth album. ‘It’s top secret,’ she says. Although she does let on that it will reflect her feelings on the current state of the political climate. ‘We’re in a time of political unrest and I think It would be ridiculous to not have that be echoed in my next album. ‘Everything’s in disarray and no one in the world knows what’s going to happen, I think it’s a really good time for people to come together and show what they’re for and what they’re against, and it might not change anything but at least we’ll feel less alone. ‘I don’t want to write preachy political folk songs but I think it would be ridiculous to not be mindful of the political climate in my next album.’ If you haven’t yet had the chance to see her perform, make sure you get down to the Louisiana on the 9th of August where she will be supporting Carina Round.

QUANTIC
Producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Quantic takes listeners on a musical adventure with his South American – inspired rhythms, drawing upon elements of cumbia, salsa, bossa nova, soul, funk and jazz. Having lived in Colombia for over seven years, Worcestershire born Will Holland has a vast catalogue of solo releases and has conducted a variety of projects under many guises including, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro and Ondatrópica. Now based in New York, the multi-talented musician has reprised his tropical reggae – inspired project Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno for a third heavyweight album, 1000 Watts. To celebrate his new release, Flowering Inferno touched down at Colston Hall last month for a sell-out event to showcase new material and classics with help from special guests Nidia Gongora and Christopher Ellis.
Shortly after performing at Colston, Quantic hopped over to The Small Horse Social Club where fans were queuing outside to indulge themselves with a 90 – minute DJ set. By the time Nitelife arrived at Small Horse, the eclectic producer had already changed into a fresh Hawaiian shirt and had his head buried in his record crate ready to unleash his extensive vinyl collection to the eager dance floor. The crowd was eased in with some bongo heavy beats but it didn’t take long for his set to take full swing. Like all of his DJ sets, it was his mission to deliver a diverse selection with the odd curve ball thrown in for good measure, from cumbian to soul, soca and even a trap-infused remix of Chamabacu, taken from the new album. Nitelife caught up with Quantic after his night at The Small Horse to get to know the artist and find out about his latest release, 1000 Watts.
Before Will Holland became Quantic, the eclectic producer started learning about music from a young age with help from his musical family. ‘I started playing the guitar and various other instruments when I was a kid. I used to have piano lessons because of my mum and dad, but I hated it. My mum says I was more interested in playing the tambourine. ‘My dad played the banjo and guitar so he used to show me how to play that, and I used to get cast off guitars from my older siblings too. I came from a very musical family so I guess most of my musical knowledge came from them. ‘I started making music when I was in my early teens, playing in a couple of punk bands at school. It was only when I got to sixteen and attended sound engineering college that I started to mess around with computers and make beats too.’ Now a well-established producer, Quantic is constantly
REWIND // 25 surprising us with new material from his many side projects and collaborations. ‘I’ve got various different strands of Quantic. I’ve always liked to go off and do lots of different styles and projects, just because I’m an overly hyperactive musical person. ‘The latest Flowering Inferno project is based around reggae, dub and ska. I started it when I was living in Colombia because I wanted to create a project that concentrated more on that sound. The first two Flowering Inferno records were recorded in Colombia, but their sound bridges reggae and Colombian music styles like cumbia and currulao. ‘I started 1000 Watts when I was moving to the States because I wanted to work with a reggae rhythm section and create something with more of a reggae-orientated sound. There’s just something about the roots-reggae sound on a loud soundsystem that I love.’ Like many of his other releases, Quantic features artists from a range of different genres across the world in 1000 Watts, including reggae artist Christopher Ellis and long time collaborator Nidia Gongora who previously featured on Quantic’s 2014 Magnetica. ‘I originally heard of Christopher Ellis from a friend who was a photographer for Damian Marley. I saw Ellis do a show with Damian Marley and it was incredible. After that I started listening to his music and eventually got in touch. He was really great to work with on this record. ‘I’ve worked with Nidia Gongora for a few years now; I met her when I was living in Colombia. I started making music with her there, so it felt like a natural thing to do a follow up track with her.’ Quantic moved to Columbia nearly ten years ago to take a break from life in the UK and explore the world. ‘At that time my father had passed away, so I just wanted a break and time to get out and about. I think when something like that happens, you just want to go out and make the most out of life. I settled in Colombia but also spent a lot of time in Puerto Rico and lots of other places. I just wanted to get a taste of the world.
I’m an overly hyperactive musical person. ‘I was always travelling as a DJ, so was in one place one day and a different place the next. I just really wanted to stay in one place for a sustainable amount of time, to be able to be inspired musically and get to know the areas and people.’ If there’s anyone’s music collection you’d like to dive into, it should be Quantic’s. His set at Small Horse flirted across a whole spectrum of genres from different eras across the world without a batter of an eyelid. ‘In my sets I always like to try and play lots of stuff with high energy. I find a lot of club nights are kind monotonous these days with only one tempo being played, but for me I like it the other way round. ‘The good thing about playing with records though is that you don’t really have the option to play requests, because chances are you’re not going to have it with the 40 records you’ve brought with you.’ Quantic is no stranger to Bristol. At a young age this city played a big part in opening up his eyes to new music. ‘I used to come to Bristol a lot when I started making music. My uncle ran a sound and recording company here and one year my mum sent me down to work with him for a week. I basically just made cups of tea all day when I was working, but that was the first time I properly got to explore and check out the music scene. It was a really good time to be here as well because it was the era of Portishead and Massive Attack; I found it really enlightening. ‘Bristol still has that same great mixture of people and style. It also has a lot of good record shops – that’s always a good thing too.’ Look out for new releases later this year, including a collaborative album with Nidia Gongora and a third release from his Ondatrópica project with Colombian Producer Frente Cumbiero. But in the meantime, be sure to check out his latest Tru Thoughts release 1000 Watts to add to the extensive Quantic collection.

PREVIEW
MASSIVE ATTACK AT THE DOWNS 3 SEPTEMBER
Bristol’s most famous musical export, trip-hop originators Massive Attack will play their first homecoming gig in 12 years this September at The Downs.
‘There will be photography and art installations in the area, and places where people can talk to groups and organisations that are working for the benefit of all society.’
The group will headline a new one-day festival from Bristol’s Team Love (Love Saves the Day, Arcadia Queens Square, See No Evil) on what promises to be an incredible lineup based on the acts announced so far: Massive Attack, Primal Scream and Skepta.
Interestingly, Massive Attack are not only headlining, but they’ve also had a heavy hand in the creation of the new festival.
Massive Attack have been very hands on. With more details expected to be announced this August, we spoke to Team Love co-founder Tom Paine to see what more we could unearth about the mysterious new festival. ‘There are some more exciting bands to announce on the main stage,’ he tells us. ‘And there’s going to be a second stage of Bristol DJs and electronic performers. There’s also what we’re loosely titling The Information Area, which is going to have guest speakers with talks around politics and current affairs.
‘Massive Attack have been involved from the very beginning, we are having almost weekly meetings with the guys. They’re very much involved in everything from the curation of the musicians playing, to how the event is going to look and feel – the décor and design of the event. They’ve been very hands on. ‘When we sat and made these plans, what feels like years ago now, we were umming and ahhing about it, because this biggest thing about this story is Massive Attack playing a homecoming show for the first time in over a decade. ‘But with us speaking with the band, saying to them “what do you want to do? Shall we do this just as a gig or should the be something more?” I think we all agreed that we wanted it to be more than that.’ All being well, this could spell the beginning of a new annual event to add to Bristol’s already bountiful festival calendar. And with Team Love and Massive Attack behind
it, we can’t imagine it’s going to be anything other than a blinding success. ‘If everyone is happy this year, we don’t just want to leave it there. We’d love to make this an annual event and if we can achieve that – what’s the ethos of the annual event? Because it’s Bristol and because it’s Massive Attack and because it’s Team Love, we wanted to do something that’s very positive but also that’s not being done right now. We didn’t want to just do another festival, because there are so many out there. ‘That’s the idea of the Information Area and also the Bristol music stage, it encapsulates everything we want to be doing: Big main stage with huge headliners, a Bristol music stage, but then also this information/ current affairs/ political area as well. ‘It’s not meant to be Live Aid, it’s not means to be a call to arms, it’s meant to be information and discussion, and access to people that are directly involved in grassroots, and a chance get away from this echo chamber of Facebook and social media and actually directly engage with people that are working hard to make society a better place.
PREVIEW // 27
‘I know that they’ve been approached by a few organisations and with the opening of the Bristol Arena, they were probably on the hit list for that, but we were chatting to them informally, like: Why are we sitting around waiting for something to happen – why don’t we just do it ourselves? ‘We’ve known the band for about 10 years, so we’ve probably been talking about it for most of that time! It heated up properly about two years ago when we were looking at options and talking to The Downs and the council.’ When the event was announced back in May, it whipped Bristol up into a frenzy, with queues for tickets forming outside Idle Hands, the only physical ticket vendor, from 3.30am, and the rest of the 20,000 tickets selling out online in under an hour.
‘The more we’ve been working with it, the more I think we’re just going to call it The Downs. We put the original artwork out with Massive Attack at The Downs with Skepta and Primal Scream, and The Downs has just stuck.’ Now to the question on many people’s lips: is Tricky back? After he turned up to play with Massive Attack at their Hyde Park show in July, many of us are hoping to see him back on a Bristol stage with current members Grant ‘Daddy G’ Marshall and Robert ‘3D’ del Naja. ‘I can’t confirm or deny anything…’ Tom laughs. ‘I think it’s very well documented that he turned up at the London show and played with them there. And that’s obviously got everyone very excited.’ Tom also hinted that there might be new music imminent from Massive Attack… With it looking more and more like Tricky has mended the feud between him and the group, we’re crossing our fingers that we’ll hear him back on a record with Massive Attack. He featured on the track Take it There on Massive Attack’s 2016 Ritual Spirit EP, so it’s not too far-fetched to hope for the first full Tricky-Massive Attack collaborative project since 1994’s Protection. ‘I can say it’s going to be the full Massive show, it’s going to
be, Horace Andy, female vocalists… It’s the full show and they’re going to play a mixture of old and new and classics.’ For those of us who thought we might never get to see Massive Attack play in Bristol again, it turns out a homecoming show has been on the cards for a long time... ‘They didn’t need much convincing – they wanted to play Bristol. It’s well known that there is venues in Bristol that they won’t play, so there’s nowhere big enough – let’s face it!’
It’s the full Massive show and they’re going to play a mixture of old and new and classics. Massive Attack have famously refused to play Bristol’s main large concert venue because it shares a name with 17th century slave trader Edward Colston. Although why they haven’t taken up a headline slot at one of Bristol’s existing festivals over the years is unclear.
We’d love to make this an annual event. ‘I expected to see 10 to 15 people queuing,’ says Tom. ‘So when I saw the queue was all the way past the Love Inn I thought, “That’s a good sign!” It was pretty mental. We sold the first 10,000 tickets in 10 minutes.’ ‘We’ve got three more acts announced on the main stage, seven or eight to be announced for the second stage and a number of talkers and partners for some of the other areas as well. There’s obviously local food traders and bars, and we’ve also done a big kids area – we’ve done almost 500 kids tickets, so it is going to be a big family day out as well.’ Keep your ears to the ground for more lineup announcements from Team Love released this month – we’re expecting to be blown away.

28 // THE INFLUENCERS
THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH
STEPHEN PARKER Stephen Parker Name: Stephen Parker Age: 37 Job title: Director of Shambarber
DJ collective, party-throwers and barbers, Shambarber was born at Shambala (geddit?) festival in 2010, when professional barber Stephen Parker came up with an idea to bring house and techno to the free-spirited festival. ‘It’s a festival I love dearly and have been going to since its inception, but I always wanted a bit more late night 4\4. I know Sid, the festival director, personally and asked if I could do a house-y kind of tent and he said, “Yeah, as long as it’s a new fresh creative concept.” We came up with the basic outline: barbershop-into-secret-knees-up… And the name seemed a given!’ The idea was, unsurprisingly, a hit and Shambarber soon started popping up at other festivals, co-hosting small tents at Bristol’s Love Saves the Day and See No Evil festival.
It’s more like a really well deckedout, crackers fucking house party! Fast-forward to 2016, and already this year they’ve hosted the hugely popular, drag queen and unicorn-infested Temple of Lust stage at Love Saves the Day. And this August, they’re set to introduce their brand new stage Stiletto Disco to Shambala, which will feature a giant stiletto slide as the entrance, Stephen tells us. ‘It takes a while before festivals will entrust you with a larger budget. You’ve got to prove you can do it on a shoestring and deliver what you say you will – then you get a chance to do something on a totally different scale. I want to say a special shout out to Femi, G-Man and George at Signs & That stage design for helping us jump to the next level.’ If you live in Bristol, there’s no doubt you’ve also seen the Shambarber name on flyers as part of some big club nights, hosting rooms for the likes of Just Jack and Shapes, although for the moment, Stephen says they’re focusing on these bigger productions. Given the success Stephen has made of Shambarber, it’s hard to believe that he hadn’t any (professional) musical background before creating his barbershop-come-blowout in 2010. ‘Not unless you count spending half the 90s and 00s in a field listening to music as experience,’ he says. ‘Although I suppose that did give me the drive to want to create something better at parties visually – 90s décor was a bit shit. ‘We have a small core of resident DJs: Pato, Hannah Mulvany, Sleazy Sessions and Billy Disney, but a very close affiliation with Alfesco Disco and Shapes.’
The best thing is standing back and looking at the finished product, be it a haircut or a week-long installation. Musically, you can expect to hear an upbeat mix of house, disco and techno. But set-wise, other than a shitload of glitter, you can’t really predict what you’re going to get at a Shambarber party. ‘We try not focus on big headliners, and be more about the space and the way it looks and sounds. It’s more like a really well decked-out, crackers fucking house party! We want a super inclusive ‘last days of Rome’ feel.’
With the music side of the venture taking off so well, it’s not a surprise that the hairdressing side blew up as well. Setting up a permanent home in Stokes Croft in 2011, Shambarber is a male and female grooming salon, with a sound system, DJ booth and lots of gold paint. ‘About 80 percent of the business is hair and 20 percent festivals,’ says Stephen. ‘Although we are planning at being at a few more festivals next summer with Stiletto Disco.’ ‘My week is usually split, with Monday and Tuesday spent in meetings and planning for the events, and the rest of the week I’m in the salon cutting hair. But in the summer I can spend up to four weeks onsite – the variation is great. ‘The best thing about my job is standing back and looking
at the finished product, be it a haircut or a week-long installation. I feel very lucky to get paid to do something creative every day. Drawbacks of the job are definitely hair splinters – small piece of someone’s hair burrowed into all kinds of places (you don’t want to know!).
