The Blue Aeroplanes
Anchorsong
The Blue Aeroplanes are returning to the stage for the first time in almost two years, for not one but two Bristol shows. After their original show at The Fleece sold out so quickly, they responded to their fans by adding a second date at Exchange. Formed in Bristol in the 80s, art rock group The Blue Aeroplanes has seen countless lineup changes, splits and reconciliations, with founding brothers Gerard Langley and John Langley being the only constant besides the band’s ongoing disregard for boundaries or pigeon holes. Their debut album Bop Art received high praise from NME in their former glory days and saw The Blue Aeroplanes sign to Fire Records, however, they’ve since acquired cult status due at least in part to their tendency to shun the industry almost entirely; popping up now and then with surprise shows and releasing limited edition records via their own website. Gerard Langley answers our 10 questions.
Japanese-born London-based producer Masaaki Yoshida AKA Anchorsong is headed for Bristol this December for a live show and signing, following the release of his latest album Cohesion. Anchorsong creates multi-layered tapestries of explorative, rhythmic music; gaining support from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Huw Stephens, Lauren Laverne and Elton John. His latest release draws heavy inspiration from 70s and 80s Bollywood film soundtracks and traditional Indian percussion, intertwining this with his unique take on soundscapes. The electronic producer is known for his compelling live shows, bringing a refined stage presence to the table, having played guitar in rock bands before embarking on his solo adventure, though now using just his MPC2500 sampler and a keyboard to create a haven of sound. Anchorsong has supported the likes of Bonobo and Portico Quartet, and his live show has been described as ‘like watching a painter drawing on a white canvas’. You can pre-order his album via Rough Trade to guarantee entry to the show.
Upcoming shows: 6 December – Exchange // 7 December – The Fleece

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? That having this government in charge of Brexit is like putting me in charge of NASA. 2. Favourite track of all time? Blackwaterside by Sandy Denny. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? I Heard it Through the Grapevine by Marvin Gaye or Sister Ray by the Velvet Underground, depending on situation. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? IDLES, Karen, Steve Bush and Fran Fay. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Not working, obviously.
THOSE QUESTIONS...
6. What was the last book you read? Shakespeare’s Dog by Leon Rooke.
1. What have you learned today? What Netflix and chill means.
7. Favourite thing on TV? At the moment, we are into Brooklyn 99.
2. Favourite track of all time? Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. The best songs are always the simplest and Dreams is a perfect example of that.
8. Are you afraid of anything? Donald Trump’s a bit scary, isn’t he? 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I occasionally played guitar on stage, but people shouted ‘Django!’ at me so I stopped. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Talking about Bob Dylan.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Go Bang by Dinosaur L. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Yves Tumor, Kelly Moran and Sandunes. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I’d be a translator. Japanese is a very complex language and I find it a challenging but rewarding job.
6. What was the last book you read? Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino. I’m usually not into crime novels, but that book blew me away. 7. Favourite thing on TV? The first season of Prison Break. I wish the series ended with season two though, the rest just ruins its legacy. 8. Are you afraid of anything? I’m afraid of cockroaches. You don’t see the real nasty ones in UK and I’m very grateful for it. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you… My hometown Tokushima is known for the traditional Japanese dance called Awa Odori, and I used to be called a prodigy. It’s a shame that I quickly lost interest and started playing football instead. 10) What are you doing tomorrow? I’m flying to Leeuwarden in the Netherlands to play Explore the North Festival. I’m collaborating with local string quartet called Risata Kwartet.

LOCAL TALENT
RIDER SHAFIQUE
Gloucester-based MC Rider Shafique has been influencing the local music scene for over a decade, getting his first taste of the road with Sony Music-signed electronic act Pressure Drop, after being introduced to the group by his cousin – who also had ties with S’Express and Galliano – and another close friend from Gloucester, Martin Fishley AKA Mr Melody. In 2009, Rider and Mr Melody went on to record an album together as Black Canvas, released by Skool of Thought and Tayo’s Cool and Deadly Imprint. ‘I was still doing stuff locally’ Rider explains, ‘but my touring and road experience came with Pressure Drop. Slowly my networks got bigger and different people asked to work together. People like Benga and Chase & Status were around remixing stuff for us, and it all grew from there.’
I don’t think I’ve ever been 100% happy with anything I’ve done. There’s always a compromise when you work with somebody else He’s now one of the South West’s most prolific and versatile MCs, with countless features spanning dancehall, dubstep, reggae, hip hop, drum and bass and more. In 2017, he recorded the 8-track Champion EP with Sam Binga on Critical Sound, which received reload treatment in late 2018, getting
re-released with instrumentals and new remixes from the likes of Enei and Alter Echo and E3. He’s part of Bristol’s Young Echo Collective and supplied the first release on the Kahn and Neek-run label Young Echo Sound, with his spoken word double single I-Dentity / Freedom Cry. Across those releases, though immediately recognisable as Rider Shafique, his style can vary massively, whether it’s a spoken word passage laid over minimalist dubstep for Gantz, or a waist winding, repeating vocal over a dancehall track for O$VMV$M. ‘You have different moods at different times,’ he explains. ‘You’re not always serious, you’re not always sad, you’re not always happy, you’re not always hungry – at dinner time you want to eat, you don’t want candy and sweets and ice cream, it’s not good for you at that time. It’s about having a balance. ‘I’ve got lots of different aspects to my personality. I don’t just listen to reggae, I don’t just listen to dubstep. UK music borrows from lots of different elements, so as a vocalist there are lots of different elements that inspire me. It’s like a melting pot and that’s why my style is how it is, it’s a reflection of who I am.’ He continues, ‘What I want to do, I don’t think I’ve done. I’ve never done my own solo album, for example. I was more attracted to dancehall, hip hop and roots reggae, and I’ve touched on those things but I’ve also taken diversions. I don’t think I’ve ever been 100% happy with anything I’ve done. There’s always a compromise when you work with somebody else.’
Listening across Rider’s entire body of work, you can get a feel for who he is as an artist, but fans can look forward to hearing what happens when Rider has full control of the reigns, as a solo album is already in the works. ‘I’ve started lots of different bits and pieces, but it’s a lot to organise and curate. Like I said before, I’ve got lots of elements to me, so it’s difficult to do in a way that makes sense. For example, some of the tracks I did with Sam Binga wouldn’t fit with a spoken word thing I did with Kahn. So I’ve started a more percussive, stripped back, acoustic kind of feel with some tracks. I’ve started some tracks where I use a drummer and a singer from Senegal and another percussionist who’s based in the UK, but who was born in Jamaica. It takes a lot of work to get all these sounds levelled and organised, it takes time. ‘I never stop making music, I’m doing two or three tracks a week, most weeks. But none of these things would fit into a solo project. ‘The Champion EP with Sam Binga, for example, that only took a few months. Working with him on eight tracks, that’s achievable. So before I do my solo project, I might do something like that with someone else. As well as putting in hours of studio time, Rider Shafique is a round the clock artist, creating visual and performance art to educate and inspire. His I-Dentity release on Young Echo Records, for example, began originally as a spoken word poem and grew into a 45-minute piece of theatre, which he toured across the South West before it was released as a piece of music. He added to the project further with a portrait series

with Bristol photographer Khali Ackford, showcasing and celebrating the diversity of dreadlock culture. ‘I have a passion for cultural subjects and history,’ says Rider. ‘There’s so much that we don’t have as West Indian people in the UK, so I’m just trying to fill that void and create things that I see a need for.
I’m just trying to fill that void and create things that I see a need for ‘These are works that I do partly for my own personal knowledge of self, and being comfortable with who I am and understanding who I am. And I think there’s need for that for young black and Asian youth, to actually know who they are
and why their grandparents came here, but also for the white youth to get rid of all the myths regarding immigration, so people can form their own opinions based on fact.’ Rider Shafique doesn’t shy away from his reputation as a political MC; as he says, a meaningful message doesn’t feature in every track, but when it’s there it’s palpable and from the heart. ‘I don’t think I have a choice not to be [political],’ he says. ‘If you’re a certain way in this world, you’re very aware of it. Whether that’s regarding your ethnicity or your sexuality or your gender. Throughout time, my inspirations in music have always been those that have a message or inspire me – that makes me want to jump up and do the same sort of thing. ‘I can only relate or speak about how I see the world or how it affects me. I’m not a millionaire, I don’t drink Cristal or have diamonds in my teeth, so I can’t talk about that, because that’s not really me.
‘People might say that I’m political, but I’m trying to make the change I want to see happen instead of just talking about it. If there isn’t history about my people, I’ll create it. If there isn’t children’s books with people that look like my children, I’m going to create that. ‘Musically, I’m collaborating with people all over the world. I want to bring things to light and showcase and educate. The world has changed from when I was young. With social media and YouTube, you can have such a big reach just from your bedroom, so it’s about connecting all those dots and bringing everyone together and trying to do something – making it happen.’

IFEOLUWA
Despite only taking to the decks two years ago, Yewande Adeniran AKA Ifeoluwa has had a big impact on the local scene with her borderless DJ sets, monthly NTS Radio show, 404; and her now-national, free and inclusive DJ workshops, Intervention.
doing philosophy. Once I’d finished my undergraduate dissertation, one of my lecturers took me aside because she’d noticed that I had all this different knowledge that I’d gained outside of university, and asked me to present on it.
Before Yewande began playing records in public, she was already well entrenched in the underground music scene, writing about and studying it inside and outside of her university degree, and is well on her way to becoming an underground club music scholar.
‘I’ve been involved in the new grime studies discipline that is just starting to become a thing in the UK’ she continues. ‘I think of Grime 3.0 as including some of the elements that grime has missed out. Grime 3.0 might sound a bit more queer, it might use different club influences, it won’t just be an aggressive 140 tune.’
I try and facilitate a dialogue between privileged and marginalised people, because I feel that’s the way forward – rather than always existing within a safe space
This questioning nature translates wholly into Ifeoluwa’s DJ sets, which range from ‘emo grime’, as she describes it, to techno, post punk and pop. She’s also an all-round classically-trained musician, playing guitar, bass, violin and piano, as well as previously singing / screaming in an emo band, before making the transition to electronic music.
Yewande is already lecturing second year philosophy students at Bristol University on subjects like black liberation, black feminism, queer theory and transfeminism, though she’s not yet finished her Masters degree. Next year, she’s looking to embark on a PHD dissecting grime music, why it sounds the way it does and how it might sound in future – or Grime 3.0, as she calls it. ‘I’ve always been very bookish,’ she explains. ‘I was always that outsider kid with their headphones on and head stuck in a book. My lecturers could see that I was really, really interested in the subject, but not quite enjoying the curriculum, because it’s very old fashioned
‘I’ve been into music and played in bands since I was really young, but it’s always been as part of a collective sound, so I never had the chance to express just what I wanted to express. When I go to clubs I do enjoy bangers, but you also sometimes want to display more than that – you want to show it as an art as well. So I always try to play Jersey and ballroom to express the queer side of me, grime and dubstep to represent where I’m from, but also the sounds of Bristol, so a lot of UK techno as well, for example. ‘It’s a combination of all of the different club genres, so elements of grime, techno, bass, ballroom... And it’s mostly made by people in really far off countries, so it’s reaching all these different genres from different cultures; now it’s just an amalgamation of different sounds. A lot of it sounds quite dystopian.’ On a personal level, Yewande has had a very difficult year, facing serious legal consequences for calling out an ex partner who is also in the music industry, and feeling pushed out of Bristol. However, she’s managed to channel this into something positive, launching her NTS Radio show, 404, and now her own record label, 404 Records. She’s also massively expanded her Intervention workshops, which by mid next year will be in Glasgow, Sheffield, London, Manchester, Nottingham and Brighton, as well as Bristol. ‘It has been a really, really difficult year, but I have been able to start to see the actual joy in club culture – what club culture is supposed to be about. I started my own community, I’ve been putting on events under my NTS show 404, and building relationships with people who are marginalised, so they can then empower themselves. ‘I don’t want to see anyone pushed out of Bristol again. I’m doing my best at ensuring that as Intervention grows, it remains super inclusive and that we have an awareness that these things do go on and that they’re brushed under the carpet, because they’re very uncomfortable. ‘I started Intervention in 2016, because I’d been really wanting to start DJing. I bought decks when I was 18 and even my friends said “Why are you DJing? Females don’t DJ, they’re not good enough, they’re not as interested...” And it really put me off, because I was young.’ Yewande was encouraged to get back behind the buttons in 2016, when non-binary London collective Siren invited her to support Machine Woman, after she had written a few
pieces on dance music for them – an experience that prompted Yewande to launch Intervention. ‘When I went to DJ, people in the crowd were shocked to see someone like me. When I finished, a lot of people in the crowd came up to me to talk about it and I thought, something needs to be done about this,
Grime 3.0 might sound a bit more queer, it might use different club influences, it won’t just be an aggressive 140 tune because these people want to DJ and they’re being purposely excluded. ‘Intervention is pretty much for any marginalised person, but we also have a part of Intervention where white men can come as well. I try and facilitate a dialogue between privileged and marginalised people, because I feel that’s the way forward – rather than always existing within a safe space. You have to ensure that safe space can widen.’ Part of the reason Yewande feels so passionate about Bristol’s music culture is because that’s what brought her here in the first place, moving from Brighton in 2014. Yewande’s drive and passion to protect and improve the local scene couldn’t have come at a better time, when whitewashing, gentrification and club closures threaten the diversity that Bristol has always celebrated. ‘I’ve always loved dubstep. I love Punch Drunk, I’m a very, very big fan of Pinch and Peverelist. I was already buying Livity Sound records back in Brighton. It was just a really exciting time for music in Bristol. And those are the people who have ended up being the most supportive; their parties have always tried as much as possible to be inclusive and put people like me in the conversation that’s happening around club culture.
I thought, something needs to be done about this, because these people want to DJ and they’re being purposely excluded ‘But I do think that because the scene everywhere across the UK, not just Bristol, has been so whitewashed, people of colour can feel very intimidated to join the local scene or showcase their own art. And that’s definitely something that needs to change, but it’s a structural issue – Bristol hasn’t really even confronted its colonial and slavery past and that seeps into different facets of the city. There’s also an issue with access to resources and that’s one of the reasons I started Intervention and why it will always remain free.’ As for what’s next, it’s a case of more of the same - growing Intervention, throwing bigger parties with 404, and putting out the first release on her newly established 404 Records. ‘Next year, we’ll be throwing really big parties’ she says. ‘404 Records will have its first release with Giant Swan. The label is going to push sounds that you wouldn’t think of working in a club, but that I think will, because I play a lot of stuff in clubs that you wouldn’t expect.’

NADINE SHAH Having flown the nest at 17 to pursue a career as a jazz singer in London, Nadine Shah is well known for her formidably individual tone and fearless approach to songwriting, as she holds nothing back with her politically infused lyrics. Influenced by artists such as Nina Simone, The Beach Boys, Dolly Parton, Frida Kahlo and Arthur Russel, her sound has often been described as a blend between PJ Harvey and Nick Cave, with her brooding, intensely atmospheric cocktail of stylish gothic pop and jazz-kissed indie rock nodding to the likes of Anna Calvi and Richard Hawley. Nadine has issued a series of evocative singles and a couple of EPs, Aching Bones and Dreary Town, before releasing her debut album Love Your Dum and Mad in 2013. Her 2015 follow-up Fast Food explores both the passionate and dark side of relationships as well as the stigma that surrounds mental illness. On her third studio album Holiday Destination, released last year, Nadine’s darkly powerful and classy post-punk holds little back as the singer songwriter explores the relentless cycle of doom broadcast on the news these past few years, covering everything from the Syrian refugee crisis, Trump’s election, the EU referendum and the rise of nationalism. Released via 1965 Records, Holiday Destination is Nadine’s most political album to date and was nominated for the Mercury Prize alongside some big names in the business including Arctic Monkeys, Jorja Smith, Lily Allen, Wolf Alice and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Nitelife had the pleasure of chatting to Nadine about her third studio album and its influences, her Mercury Prize nomination, as well as what’s in store for her Bristol show on 3 December at SWX. It is clear that Nadine has always been socially and politically aware; her first two records touch on topics such as identity, as she explores her own personal experiences of racism and feeling culturally adrift, as well as serving as a reflection upon the complications of relationships and a world obsessed with instant gratification. In Holiday Destination, Nadine takes a step away from writing lyrics based on her own perspective to document the plight of others. ‘Holiday Destination is a bit of a departure from the other two albums in that it’s more visceral and has more of a political message’, explains Nadine. ‘It’s been a bit of a bizarre year for the album. Despite the fact that it was released last year, it keeps growing, it’s like the plague, it just keeps getting bigger! It is a lovely thing and I think it’s down to the fact that people are generally really frustrated. The political climate is becoming worse and worse and people want their musicians and artists to voice their frustrations for them.’ Unsurprisingly, more and more artists are dealing with political themes and many more young people are getting engaged in politics. In Bristol we are seeing this via bands such as IDLES who are well-known for their aggressive approach to current affairs, presenting political issues that we rarely see from other bands. While the past year is said to have signalled a new dawn for the rock’n’roll protest
Political artists that have been celebrated, I could count on one hanD record, Nadine believes that there are still not enough artists making music that reflects upon the current times; ‘Political artists that have been celebrated, I could count on one hand’ says Nadine, ‘as much as there are bands like IDLES and myself and Shame, really scraping the barrel here – Fleetwood Mac to an extent, Maximo Park... there really hasn’t been that many political artists around, which honestly, I’m pretty appalled by. ‘I respect people’s decisions to not make a political album’ continues Nadine, ‘because it can be quite daunting to do

so, because it divides people so much. Though I hope that’s changing, I hope people look at what IDLES are doing and take inspiration from that.’ As a British Muslim with Norwegian and Pakistani heritage, Nadine is all too familiar with prejudice and exclusion surrounding concepts of ‘home’. Her brother Karim is a documentary writer and by the time she started writing Holiday Destination, he had been producing films on the refugee frontline for years. Predominantly working for Al Jazeera, Karim was making documentaries before the Syrian refugee crisis was on our screens and it was this that sparked Nadine’s concern and inspired her to write her most politically charged songs to date. ‘I always found the work my brother did very inspiring and I’m very lucky to have been brought up in that household. My brother’s humanitarian work and political work has always been very present in my life growing up and I’ve always been very aware of how lucky I am in comparison to many others all over the world. Also having a Pakistani
father who comes from a very poor background has meant that since a very young age I’ve been aware of other people’s sufferings and have always been reminded and encouraged by my family to work for other people. ‘It was pretty difficult in 2016 to write about anything else, to be honest’ Nadine continues, ‘seeing those really harrowing images of people on the shores of Greece after having made that treacherous journey across the sea. Also, there has been this rise in nationalism and decline in empathy, and being a Muslim woman in that climate is a scary time, so that’s also part of what motivated me to make this album.’ It was a 2014 news report that inspired the album title; as thousands of refugees and migrants arrived on the Greek island of Kos, tourists were interviewed complaining that it was ruining their holiday. The album itself is a brilliantly courageous record and is a collaboration with producer and co-writer Ben Hiller, known for having produced albums for Depeche Mode,
Suede, Elbow and Blur. Hiller has produced all three of Nadine’s albums and the pair’s latest work showcases more of an up-tempo beat than the gothic introspection of her previous records. This time round there is the introduction of a saxophone, courtesy of revered saxophonist Pete Wareham.
It was pretty difficult in 2016 to write about anything else ‘Because there is heavy political rhetoric present on the album, I didn’t want it to sound super down in the dumps’ explains Nadine, ‘I want it to instill hope and inspire people. I was listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder, who is one of the most political writers of all time, but a lot of people don’t realise that, because his music is very uplifting and funky

and groove-led. Songs like Living for the City and Higher Ground are hugely political songs and that’s kind of what I wanted to do. I wanted to play these songs to a room full of people and for them to leave with their activism charged rather than feeling hopeless. It was really important that we made the music more energetic than my past albums, so we introduced elements like the saxophone and the faster pace. I took inspiration from lots of afrobeat, Talking Heads... all that kind of stuff.’
I was mainly worried about seeming opportunistic more than anything With her music tackling such weighty injustices, I asked Nadine whether she’s ever been nervous about releasing a record that could potentially create such divided opinion, though the Mercury Prize nominee says that she’s mostly preaching to the converted. ‘I guess if I were a bigger artist there would be more of a divided opinion, but the simple fact is that I’m an artist that gets played on Radio 6 Music. A certain type of paper writes about me and I exist within an echo chamber to an extent. That’s only started to change because of the Mercury Prize nomination, so I’m starting to speak to people outside of that echo chamber, which is a really lovely thing. ‘I was never too nervous, because I was very aware of where my music’s place would be in the world’ Nadine continues, ‘I knew the Daily Mail weren’t going to write about it, so I felt kind of safe in the knowledge that I’ve got a really lovely, kind, sound fanbase. I was mainly worried about seeming opportunistic more than anything, that was my biggest worry – people thinking that I was using other people’s stories to my own advantage. But that wasn’t the case and the reception was really lovely and super positive.’ Holiday Destination received much critical acclaim and, as well as the Mercury Prize nomination, was named by BBC Radio 6 Music as seventh-best album of 2017. I asked Nadine how she felt about being nominated: ‘It was about time!’ she says laughing. ‘I was super happy about it, but shocked because every album I’ve released, everyone’s said “this is the one you’re going to get nominated for” but it never happened. One thing I learnt, almost like a defence mechanism, is not to expect anything, because it’s not the most reliable of industries. I never really believe anything is going to happen until the day it does. ‘It was amazing and I’m glad that it was this album, because
to me it feels like the best work I’ve made and I was proud to be a British Muslim woman with a political album nominated alongside much bigger artists, so I was just really proud to be included on that list.’ Holiday Destination hasn’t just received critical acclaim either, her audiences are connecting to it too and her brooding indie rock is finding a swelling fanbase. ‘The responses from the live shows have been pretty beautiful’ says Nadine, ‘and for each album the demographic has grown. I’m noticing more people of colour in the audience, more young women than we’ve ever had before. It’s a really hippy thing to say, but there is a really loving vibe – a kind of solidarity in the room. It does feel like when I’m talking to people after the show, or I’m watching people talk as they leave the venue, that people are leaving with their activism charged. I feel like there is this knock-on effect of positivity that the album has instilled in the audience. Nadine will be coming to Bristol on 3 December to perform in SWX and deliver her powerful state-of-the-world address. I asked her what we could expect: ‘Well hopefully Big Jeff will be there, as he’s my good luck charm! I’ve never played a show in Bristol where he’s not been in the audience. So, if he’s not there (she says laughing) I’ll be very disappointed. I have this amazing artist supporting me, her stage name is Du Blonde and her lyrics are funny and really smart. There is something really inspiring about her and I’m really looking forward to performing together. ‘We’ll be trying out some new material, so I’ll be urging the audience to put their phones away for those ones, because they’re going to be a bit ropey’, she jokes. ‘I really love trying new stuff out live and seeing how they go down with the audience. It’s such an immediate response and people are always kind, but you can tell if they really like something. We’re having loads of fun with the live shows now; the more we play together with the band, the stronger the set is getting.’ Being one of the most visible Muslim women with a guitar, Nadine is constantly asked how she feels about the lack of women of colour in indie music, but it’s a discussion she’ll never get bored of; ‘I find it pretty shocking’ she says, ‘it was the Women in Music Awards the other night and I was presenting Skin from Skunk Anansie with an inspirational artist award. She was a huge inspiration for me growing up, I remember watching her on TV religiously. The genre of music that I loved was always made by men, white men – brilliant white men, even – but there was a real lack of women of colour.
Then along came Skin and there was nobody that looked like her and her performance was so visceral – and I think she’s a hugely important artist in that sense. She did a very beautiful speech about how difficult it had been for her and how difficult it continues to be. ‘But I hope that’s starting to change’ Nadine continues. ‘We get some lovely responses from young South Asian women and young Muslim women who have seen us on TV. This sounds really cheesy, but there is this “if you can see it, you can be it” mentality and I think it’s really important that these people are more visible to encourage other women of colour to get involved in the music industry.
There’s a new solidarity among women that’s not always been present within the music industry, because we were conditioned to be very competitive with one another ‘One thing that I want to say to young women that aspire to get into the music industry currently is that it’s actually an exciting time for us. There’s a new solidarity among women that’s not always been present within the music industry, because we were conditioned to be very competitive with one another. We were fooled into thinking that there was only room for one of us in whatever industry, but there’s a space now for young women to get into the industry and it’s a really exciting time. ‘I want to encourage those women to look out for all the funding and opportunities available, because there are so many of them’ Nadine continues, ‘and I know a lot of people are missing them because they don’t know where to look. Go and check the socials religiously or the PRS foundation and UK Music – there are so many different organisations. I really want to encourage women at the moment to just go for it.’
