There’s something about live hip hop that captures a sound and emotion you can’t quite reach on a recorded track, so with Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon coming to Bristol this month with their ‘Why So Serious’ tour accompanied by their new band, it’s something that cannot be missed.

Can we expect to hear some new material as well? Syntax: Yeah we’ve definitely got a few new tracks we’re road testing and a few new releases in the pipeline, but really we are concentrating on the Killer Combo material that came out last year, and a few of my old ones as well.

Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon are famous amongst the UK hip hop community for their collaborations, delivering the work of a humorous wordsmith over contagious beats in releases like Benny Huge and Killer Combo. But as well as smashing it together, these guys are individually recognised as some of the most respected artists currently out there in their own right.

What inspired you to go down the live band route? Syntax: I think it’s a case of how much I enjoy doing stuff with The Mouse Outfit. It’s just opened my mind to the potential for a wider audience and the different dynamics in shows you can achieve. I love doing stuff with The Mouse Outfit, but when I perform with them I am part of a bigger whole and it’s not my band that I make the decisions for. With this it’s only right me and Pete do something we can control and play the songs we want to play. Another thing that I guess inspired me was that whenever I perform with The Mouse Outfit, we tend to do a few songs of mine and Pete’s and I started to feel a bit guilty because he wasn’t really part of it!

Dr Syntax had a successful start to his music career with the successful Self Taught EP and later performing with hip hop veterans Foreign Beggars. Later, he began collaborating with the likes of Pete Cannon, Tom Caruana and joined forces with the powerful funk driven band The Mouse Outfit to take the festival circuit by storm. Pete Cannon was practically born with a pair of headphones as an umbilical cord and has since become a talented producer of many genres. Not only has Pete worked with Dr Syntax, he has produced for a large number of artists like Stig of the Dump and Dirty Dike, being recognised as one of the top hip hop producers currently in the UK. Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon are renowned to put on a good show even without the support of a live band, so when Nitelife caught sniff of their latest tour with a ‘live’ twist touching down at Bristol’s Attic Bar this February, we knew we had to grab a few words. Pete and Syntax kindly took the time out of rehearsals to have a quick chat about the new tour, their love for making music and what they have up their sleeves for the year ahead… ‘Why So Serious’ is set to include a live band for the majority of nights, taking your shows a very different direction from your previous work together. Can you tell us a bit more about the tour? SYNTAX: Basically, me and Pete have been touring for quite a few years now with myself rapping and him DJing and doing a bit of rapping. We just thought we’d spice it up a little bit this year and after working with The Mouse Outfit, I’d got a taste for performing with a live band. We’ve brought in a great drummer and a great keys player and basically we just wanted to beef things up a little bit. It’s the bells and whistles version if you will.

I’d say Bristol is the number one city for hip hop here in the UK Pete, unlike Dr Syntax, will this be your first experience of touring with a live band? Pete: I’ve worked with various live bands in different capacities before. I’ve been an engineer and got involved with stuff at uni, but really I’m more used to the kind of sample based stuff, a bit on the keys and being more the backbone like how I am with this new band with Syntax. But, yeah I’d say this is the most serious actual band that I’ve been in where I’m controlling it mainly, but this is definitely the first band I’ve been in with Syntax, as opposed to a kind of DJ and rapper set up we usually have. With previous releases like Benny Huge and Killer Combo you are clearly not a stranger to each other. How did you first meet and start working together? Syntax: Well, the first time I met Pete I was already aware of him because I was working with Foreign Beggars and we had a mutual friend called Alex Evans who was the engineer for them at the

time. He would say ‘hey check these beats out, they’re from my mate’. Now Pete at the time only used his alter ego name called Mr.Dick, but he eventually changed it to Pete Cannon because people didn’t really get it! But I just remember all these CDs with amazing beats and a little stick figure with a penis. They just stood out, so I knew he was a quirky character before I even met him. I actually met him when he booked me and Stig of the Dump to do a show back in 2007, he brought us to Manchester to do a show for a night he ran up here. I think we hit it off from there really. You’re good buddies on and off stage- does this work to your advantage when you’re creating new music? Syntax: Absolutely, because we’re good mates but we don’t have clashing personalities and we complement each other well but it’s not competitive. We’ve got a good rapport and we can talk about the creative process easily. I think we are pretty much on the same page and we kind of make music to entertain each other really. Listening to your music you can tell that you enjoy a laugh, with tongue and cheek lyrics in Hire Me and more recently Middle Class Problems to name a few. Do you think it’s important to have a bit of humour in your music? Syntax: I definitely think it’s important. I mean for me personally, being who I am and making hip hop music, if I did that without any sense of irony then I’d be a bit of an odd character, shall we say! I think it’s important because hip hop music inspires me and I like hip hop with some humour to it, from something like Juice Crew stuff and even to Big Daddy Kane, who’s a serious rapper but also has comic moments, and Nice & Smooth. Also, just the love for parody songs from people like John Shuttleworth and poetry from John Cooper Clarke, all those things inspire the music we make. Pete, as a producer, why do you think it’s important to spread yourself across a large number of projects and genres? Pete: I guess it’s different for a producer. If you look at an artist like Dr Syntax, he’s concentrating on his band or his sound or his album, but as for me- I’m making a lot of music constantly. I might make different music depending on the artist I’m working with, so like electronic, hip hop or some jungle. I’ve actually just made a jungle track with some guys called The Ghost Writerz, so for me it kind of just keeps me musically entertained. Sometimes it can be a little bit heavy with a lot of deadlines and stuff but it just keeps me on my toes really. I love working with different styles of music

NItelife Bristol and I like to make various projects, so I guess that’s why I work with so many people really. What inspired you to start making music when you were growing up? Pete: I guess the influence was my dad to be honest. He was a musician in the 60s and 70s and made a lot of music. From an early age he got me piano lessons and got me into music. He gave me a record player when I was about four years old with a load of records, so it kind of just sunk straight in to me when I was a kid. From there, it became a bit of an obsession really; having synthesisers and trying to get into electronic music from tapes that I got at school, getting into the early rave scene and wondering how the hell they made that music! I was so intrigued by it all and so it just escalated from there. I went to music college and then it just continued and continued and it will always continue!

Dr Syntax, having performed a lot in Bristol over the past year, you are definitely no stranger to the city. What is it about Bristol and its vibrant music scene that makes you continue to return? Syntax: Well I’d say Bristol really is the number one city for hip hop here in the UK. Just the sheer amount of people that love hip hop and the turnout at events. You just need to see how many events are going on and the energy of the whole place. I hate to use the word ‘urban’ but the urban culture is everywhere you look. The enthusiasm of the place for hip hop means of course we want to keep coming back. Bristol has just got it right and they continue to keep getting hip hop right. It’s always a pleasure.

Syntax: It was probably my babysitter when I was nine years old and he was fifteen. He was simultaneously the best and the worst babysitter in the world because he’d come round with a load of gangster rap and Vietnam War films. So I’d watch all these Video Nasties and stuff and listen to all of this obscene music when I was a little nine year old, living in a pleasant rural Oxford village. From there I was just completely obsessed with hip hop. A few years later when I was in my teens I started to write myself. I never thought I’d ever be doing anything like this, but that’s how I got the bug. What else can we expect from you both this year? Pete: I’ve got a lot of stuff on the way. I’ve got a ‘comedy’ album coming up but that will be under a different name (Mr.Dick). Like I was saying before, its other music I’ve made to just have fun with other artists and express myself. So there’s that album which is gonna come out on Lewis Recordings which is Mike Lewis’ label. I’ve got an EP coming out with Black Josh, a Manchester MC that’ll be on Blah Records. I think myself and Dr Syntax will probably do another EP, I’ve put a few beats together and he’s been doing some writing so we will see what happens. I’ve got another project under another different name for more electronic music called Block, out on Jon Phonics’ Astral Black Records. There’s lots of beats scattered about on people’s albums. There will be a few more jungle tracks with The Ghost Writerz and that will be coming out on Tru Thoughts. The first single I’ve got scheduled to come out with them should drop on the 16th Feb and that’s gonna be my first jungle release. Syntax: More releases! I’m featured on a few tracks for the new Mouse Outfit album Step Steadier and after that, I’ve got a new EP coming out with Pitch from The Mouse Outfit.

Dr Meaker

Bristol beatmakers Dr Meaker have been solidly gaining reputation as one of the best live dance acts (with a heavy hint of DnB) to come out of Bristol in the past years – and they’ve worked hard for it. Founder and producer Clive Meaker has been making music from the age of fourteen. In 2006, he won funding from the BBC’s Urban Talent Bursary award, using the money to fund the making of the bands debut album ‘A Lesson from the Speaker’. The following year, the band entered the Glastonbury Festival Unsigned Competition and were the outright winners of the Dance Music category, earning them a prime time slot in the Dance Village at Glastonbury Festival and a whole new level of attention from the likes of Annie Mac, B Traits, Pete Tong, Rob Da Bank and Huw Stephens. If you think you haven’t heard Dr Meaker, chances are you probably have - their live BBC Maida Vale version of ‘Skyfall’ was everywhere, and went on to feature on the BBC Live Lounge 2013 deluxe edition, which went to Number 1 in the UK Album charts. Last year, they had a UK top 40 with their single ‘Right Back’, featuring Kosheen front woman and DJ Fresh collaborator, Sian Evans (who featured on his UK Number 1, ‘Louder’). The Bristol-based band has been praised for their live performances, lighting up dance floors and festival pits with their unique bass heavy, soulful sound. If you haven’t seen Dr Meaker live yet, make sure you take your chance to see them playing smaller venues in Bristol while you still can, as there’s a feeling in the air that this band is about to explode. Dr Meakers’s new single ‘Fresh’ drops next month, featuring vocals from Basement Jaxx’s Sharlene Hector. The single has already been getting serious props on Radio 1, and was chosen as Mistajam’s ‘Jam Hot’ Record of the week on 1xtra.

You describe your genre as ‘Bristol Bass Music’ – can you explain what this means to you? Lorna: Our sound is Dirt and Soul, which is bass and beat heavy music with soulful vocals on top, coming out of Bristol. Obviously Bristol has a bit of a bass legacy. Do the likes of Massive Attack, Portishead, Roni Size, DJ Die, etc. continue to influence your music or do you think Bristol has moved on? Clive: Those acts have all influenced me for sure. I still listen to Massive Attack regularly and rate it as some of the best music ever made. Massive Attack and Roni Size / Reprezent’s older material still influences me, but recently their output has slowed and I see us and other Bristol artists as picking up the baton and taking things forward in a new direction and creating our own sound. I’ll never stop respecting what the pioneers did to kick off the Bristol scene. It’s cool when we are shown respect from the pioneers too. How did your single with Sian Evans come about? Clive: I started it by sampling a disco track called ‘Dynasty Adventures in the land of music’ and then wrote the track around that sample. We were searching for the right vocal to put on the instrumental track and got demos from 5 different vocalists in Bristol but nothing was sounding right. So I called Sian and asked if she was up for writing a vocal for it and she agreed. Her demo sounded wicked from the start, so we recorded Sian on a nice Neumann U67 mic with Andy Henderson in his studio ‘Retrosonic’, North Bristol. I mixed it at home and it was mastered by Bristol’s Optimum Mastering Studios. That tune blew the door off across the whole DnB scene. It was a wicked buzz having it blow up so big last year. Gotta send out respect to V Recordings and Circus Records for backing it. ‘Right Back’ ranked an impressive top 40 in the UK dance charts. Did it bring about more radio/ commercial attention? Tom: ‘Right Back’ was definitely a major kick-start to getting our name out to a wider audience. It was an amazing achievement for us and it has definitely given us the attention leading to our forthcoming release. It has definitely stamped our mark on the music world.

Can you tell us about your new single due out next month? Clive: The new Single is called ‘Freaks’ and is out on the 16th March 2015. It features vocalist Sharlene Hector from Basement Jaxx. Lorna wrote the vocal for Sharlene and it’s sounding wicked. I think it’s our strongest club record we’ve made to date. I produced it with Bristol based Cappo D and the tune came about after we were working on a remix for another artist which started to get too good for a remix so we scrapped the remix half way through and started to work on the track for our next single. It was created on a vibe. It’s been going off on Radio 1 / 1xtra and was Mistajam’s ‘Jam Hot’ Record of the week. We’re hoping this will be the record to really establish us worldwide.

What’s the best thing about the Bristol music scene? Lorna: It’s a melting pot. There is a fantastic amount of variety and creativity. There seems to be a constant output of quality music, it’s great!

Are you working on a new album? Clive: Yes, we are working on the album and have sent all the demos to the record label (Circus). We are producing one track at a time and need to finish about 12 tracks in the next few months. We will release it when it’s ready. We’re aiming to release it this summer. It’s going to be a wicked album and will be called ‘Dirt & Soul’, which is how we describe our sound. Have you got any more exciting collaborations coming up? Lorna: Our collaborations usually come from us having created the songs then thinking ‘that person would sound wicked on this track’ or ‘we need that sounding guitarist on this’! It’s always about having the right sounding vocal or musical elements for the track in order to get it to its full potential. Which is exactly how the next single collab came about.... Obvious one – how did you guys get together? Lorna: We all met through mutual friends and musicians in the area. We’ve had a few member changes along the way but this line up is our strongest yet. We’ve got myself on vocals, Tom (Drums), Clive (Producer/keys), Ben (Sax), Sam (Sax), Laurent (Vocals), Mike (Bass). Best place to play in Bristol? Tom: The favourite place to play in Bristol for me would be the 02 Academy. Great atmosphere and a wicked sound.

The Mr Wolf’s girls In the spring, after 12 years Mr Wolf’s is going to be moving to it’s new permanent home. Although, for now, the new location is being kept secret, we’ve been assured it’s in close proximity and we can expect a huge final party before the move. Mr Wolf’s is owned by Mark, Stephanie and Adam Wolf, and managed by a close-knit team including general manager Anna, bookings manager Natalie and social media manager Charli. “It’s a family run business,” Anna tells us. “So it’s not a corporate thing. Everyone is fairly relaxed and we all work hard to support each other. That’s what Mr Wolf’s is about really, the whole family vibe.” Serving up live music, late night parties and noodles, Mr Wolf’s is sweaty, unpretentious and always a good vibe.

“We support all live music,” Anna says, “but some stuff works here better than others. The heavier stuff, we send to venues like The Golden Lion, The Fleece, venues who have got more of the set up for that and who attract more of that sort of crowd. But all the funk, soul, ska, reggae, gypsy, blues, rock and roll, country…” “Anything people can bob around and dance to,” says Natalie. “That’s what people come to Mr Wolf’s for really, is to have a dance rather than a – “Thrash!” Anna previously worked in the television industry as a researcher for Natural History documentaries but her love of live music found her working extra hours behind the bar, and eventually quitting her job to go full time at the venue.

For a venue that puts on live music nearly every night of the week, Mr Wolf’s certainly aren’t just filling up the diary. The pleasingly-grimy, 200 capacity venue has booked some world class acts, including a young Ed Sheeran.

“The best thing about my job is definitely the live music. I’m really lucky that I get to see at least four live acts a week.

“It really satisfying to see acts outgrow us,” says Anna. “For example, bands like Yes Sir Boss and Ed Sheeran who played here back in the day when the were just starting out. It’s just so incredible to see them outgrow Mr Wolf’s when we can’t pay them enough money or when we can’t offer them massive gigs, and to see them go out and do amazing things, hit all the festivals, and eventually get signed professionally.”

Natalie is a BIMM graduate, vocal coach and a member of Hot Pursuit - who you can catch playing at Mr Wolf’s this month on February 13.

Regular Wolf-ers have some to expect a certain calibre of acts, but you can also expect to hear certain sounds, Charli tells us: “When people come here, they know what they want, and they know what Mr Wolf’s provides. So if say, some heavy rock started playing, people would be like ‘when did this happen?’ ”

“I’m especially into independent music. I’d rather go to a live gig than see anything that’s been produced or pre-recorded.”

“The best thing about working here for me is being surrounded by musicians and people who love music. And getting to listen to music every day, whether necessarily it’s stuff that I love, or stuff that I know will work here, just getting to listen to music and constantly being updated by new bands. It really keeps me in the loop, so when I not performing in bands, I’m still surrounded by the thing that I love.” Charli works two days a week at Mr Wolf’s, and the rest of the time she’s a student at UWE studying Media Culture and Practice.

In fact, they’ve all had bands sleeping on their floors at some point or another, as have the rest of the Mr Wolf’s team. “Sometimes bands will ask for hosts, and we’ll ask around to see if anyone will have them on their floor” Natalie explains. “Obviously when bands are on tour, they either have to sleep in their van or fork out for a hostel. So I think all three of us, when bands ask if there is anywhere to stay, have offered our floor at some point or another, ” says Anna. Finally, as a strong female-led team who are doing exceptionally well - there’s always a queue outside Mr Wolf’s - we were interested to find out whether they thought music promotion is male-dominated industry, as it’s often reported to be: “To be honest, I think it’s pretty balanced now,” Anna says. “On the promotions side of things, we get approached equally by as many girls as boys when people are looking to book nights and stuff. But it’s from the actual customers; if on a night someone’s got a complaint and someone says can they speak to the manager, and I’ll say ‘you are speaking to the manager’, they’ll still say, ‘no can I speak to the manager please?’ So I think from that side it’s still quite unbalanced.” Natalie says, “Regular promoters I’m in touch with, there are quite a lot of guys but there’s definitely a few women who are promoting acts as well. In fact, often the ones who are very act-focused are women.” Interview by Rachel Morris

How did you get your job? I started off behind the bar about four years ago, just doing bits of bar work alongside the other job I was doing.

How did you get your job? I’d just done a PR internship for six weeks in London doing everything they were asking for so I sent in my CV. I came in for my interview nervous and hungover and grumpy. I think they got the vibe that I didn’t want the job, but they gave it to me anyway! And it’s just been really, really good ever since. I love it.

How did you get your job? I finished a music degree at BIMM last year and one of my old tutors posted about this job and I thought - I want that job, I love Mr Wolf’s, I want to be around live music. So I applied straight away and it was the most enthusiastic email I’ve ever written. I think that maybe came across to Anna, and I had my interview with her and that was that.

I really, really liked working here – really interested in all the events and the behind-the-scenes side of it - so I went full time and worked my way up from there. What does your job mainly involve? Two aspects to it – obviously the running of the bar, the late nights and weekends, managing all that. Then there is also booking the live acts and DJs, looking for new people to play and working with the rest of the team to make sure we’ve got some really good acts here.

“Charli walked in with a massive attitude. And because there are four highly-strung women working at Mr Wolf’s, you have to have an attitude to fit in. Charli was the most attitude-y of everyone, so we gave her the job.” – Anna What does your job mainly involve? I control all of the social media. Mr Wolf’s has a facebook page where you can friend him, engage with him and talk to him – but actually it’s just me. So creating all the posts, making sure everyone knows what’s going on, sharing funny photos and I also design all the posters and listings.

“I’m not musical, but I really admire people that can get up on stage in front of loads of people they don’t know and just play,” says Charli. “I’ve had a few bands stay at my house and it just seems like a really cool thing to do.”

What does your job mainly involve? Mainly manning the emails and filling up the diary. I book up three months in advance and it’s a constant process of bands coming in, me listening to their music, deciding whether it’s right for the venue or not. We have a lot of music here, but things like metal, indie, rock stuff doesn’t particularly go well with the Wolf’s crowd, so sometimes I’ll recommend better venues to go to for them. .

Her playful and interactive approach to writing and performing has been charming audiences for the past few years with her sweetly smooth vocals, banjo, guitar, a healthy dose of comedy, and an uncanny ability to impersonate a trumpet with her mouth.

A collector of hip hop, funk, soul, boogie and related beats and jazz based music for more than 20 years, Chris came to prominence as a club DJ through his 10 year role as resident DJ and promoter of Substance (one of the UK’s largest and longest running hip hop and funk nights) and his 2 year spell as mix DJ on BBC Radio 1Xtra.

Blending influences from folk, jazz and soul, Lori Campbell is quickly gaining reputation as important folk artist, with her fans including Seasick Steve.

A key signing to UK labels BBE and Breakin Bread, a steady output of high profile mix albums, remixes, collaborations and productions has allowed Chris to DJ around the globe. Artists Chris has recently collaborated with, produced and remixed include Grammy Award winning vocalists Bilal and Algebra Blessett, veteran New York producer DJ Spinna, hip hop man of the moment Oddisee, Tru Thoughts vocalist Lizzy Parks, Speedometer front man Myles Sanko and many more. Chris recently produced the debut album from BBC New Music Award winning jazz / electronica outfit Maylight, due for release on BBE Records in early 2015.

Chris’s 2012 BBE Mix Album ‘Latin Concrete‘ was featured as album of the week by UK broadsheet newspaper The Independent. In 2010, Chris was named as one of nine ‘Stars of the Future’ by Mixcloud and ranked a respectable #17 in the site’s Top 100 DJs that year. In 2013 Chris stole no fewer than 3 places in Mixcloud’s Top 100 DJ mixes, placing at #7, #18 and #43.

THOSE QUESTIONS... What have you learned today?   I learned how to strip a bicycle right back to its frame. There are parts to a bike that I didn’t even know came off.  Thanks to The Duke of York pub quiz, I also learned that The Father Ted theme tune was written by Neil Hannon, frontman of The Divine Comedy. Then we won some patronising sweets for coming second to last and I learned that rainbow drops taste like something you might find at the back of your sock drawer. Favourite track of all time?   Cloudbusting, Kate bush.... Play it loud.    Worst chart song at the moment? I don’t really know what’s in the charts (…) Ok, I just Googled the charts. I don’t much like that song that’s all about the bass. It’s good that she is trying to make a stand against photoshopped images of perfection, but her argument includes the line “boys they like a little more booty to hold at night” which doesn’t really solve anything. She is still objectifying herself - come on girls!

What have you learned today? Don’t take the Central Line during rush hour. I’m not sure that really counts because I’m pretty sure I knew that already, but I guess I needed reminding.

If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead?   I guess it would have to be Astronaut... No... Unicorn whisperer. Yes.

Favourite track of all time? Near impossible to have just one but ‘Wind Parade’ by Donald Byrd has to be somewhere in the winners list.

What was the last book you read?   The last good book I read was Just Kids by Patti Smith.

Worst chart song at the moment? To be honest I don’t really check what it or isn’t in the charts particularly so I’m not the best person to ask.

Favourite thing on TV?   Don’t have a TV but bedtime iPlayer viewing includes Buzzcocks and QI. Are you afraid of anything?   Everything.   Tell us something people don’t know about you.   Which people? Not a lot of people know I can tap dance. What are you doing tomorrow? Teaching an 11 year old to play the ukulele and going for a mediaeval banquet.

Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? DJ Spinna is an all time favourite and someone I always check for. EVM128 is another I’m really into right now. He’s remixed a track from a new project I’m doing for BBE and it’s killer. Opolopo from Tokyo Dawn’s another I’m listening to a lot right now. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? Well I already do a lot of work with curating music for websites, labels etc. so not a super original answer, but probably it would be more of that.

What was the last book you read? I’m reading a book called ‘The Jazz Loft Project’ it’s about the life of W Eugene Smith and the photos he took whilst living in what became an after hours jazz hangout in New York in the late 50s / 60s. Favourite thing on TV? Not really addicted to anything right now. Homeland and True Detective were the last things I got really sucked into I guess. I’m making an effort to listen to music instead watching TV as much as possible. Are you afraid of anything? Not having enough time to do everything I’d like to. I’m a serial maker of unrealistic lists of things I need to do. Tell us something people don’t know about you.   I’m a Smiths fan. But so is DJ Premier from what I’m told - must be a hip hop thing. What are you doing tomorrow? A morning meeting to plan our online activities for the coming year, then give the test presses for my next release a spin on the monitor system in the studio if I can sneak some time in and then home to get some work down on a new album I’m doing with Pugs Atomz.
