Moscow Drug Club
Elevant
Moscow Drug Club is the happy product of a meeting in a Bristol pub, when new friends decided to embark on a project to combine their particular musical talents and influences, those being: 1930s and 40s swing music, and Parisian songwriting of the 1950s; a combination front woman Katya Gorrie describes as ‘gypsy tango swing’. Fast forward seven years and three albums, the current quintet includes lead singer Katya, who is trained in jazz and classical music (as well as dance and theatre), guitarist Denny Ilett, accordionist Mirek Salmon, double bassist Andy Crowdy, and trumpet players Jonny Bruce and Ben Cummings. MDC combine their original material with songs by the likes of Jaques Brel, Leornard Cohen, Tom Waits and Bertolt Brecht. In the wake of the launch of their new album last month, we spoke to Katya to ask those all important 10 questions…. Upcoming Bristol show: Fringe Bristol, 1 June
Psyche-rock trio Elevant is the brainchild of songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and boss of Elevant’s own label, Michael Edward. With multi-instrumentalists Tom Shand and Hannah Lodge on drums and bass respectively in tow, the band originally began as a recording project in their hometown of Liverpool. Elevant draw on influences from hard rock to psychedelia, post punk to rock and roll, krautrock to blues, and whatever else had crossed their ears. Inspired by the recording process of Steve Albini (Shellac), the band emulated his approach in the studio to perform tight, one take cuts to capture the power, spontaneity and visceral thrill of a kick-ass, ‘loud as hell’ live band in full flight. As you can guess, they play one hell of a live show. We caught up with front man, Michael, ahead of their Bristol show at Mothers’ Ruin later this month, where they will be playing new material from forthcoming album There is A Tide… Upcoming Bristol show: Mothers’ Ruin, 20 February

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
OM UNIT
“I think Bristol’s music scene was influencing my music before I even came here,” says Jim Coles, better known as the producer Om Unit, who has invited us to join him in his Bristol studio for a chat.
“But I don’t do genres. Or let’s say they’re not as important at other things. Say you’re a baker and someone says to you, ‘you’re a croissant baker’. You might specialise in croissants and pastries, but you’re a baker, not a croissant baker.”
Despite only moving here last March, Jim has had a long association with Bristol. His break through record was a remix of Bristol dubstep producer, Joker’s ‘Digidesign’. It caught the attention of the likes of Kode9 and Plastician, whose support helped propel him to new height when he released Om Unit’s The Corridor EP on his Terrorythmn label.
Another pivotal moment in Om Unit’s career came with his meeting of Bristol’s bass, dancehall and jungle experimentalist, Sam Binga, which led to several collaborations, including their current white label project, BUNIT.
Over the next few years, Om Unit released on Exit Records, Planet Mu, his own label Cosmic Bridge, and probably his biggest coup to date, drum and bass holy grail, Metalheadz; where he was gifted access to Goldie’s sample archive for his second EP on the label, Inversion. “Jungle was my first love. I started making music in ’94 and DJing bedroom style in ’95. Just being a teenager, enthusiastic about music, and having fun.” Jim then moved into the world of competitive scratching under the now expired moniker DJ 2tall, making it to the finals of the DMC World DJ championship. His later experiments include his Phillip D Kick alias, which explores a relationship between Chicago’s footwork scene and jungle. “The jungle thing is always there. Which makes sense given what I’ve been doing with Metalheadz and the Phillip D Kick project. When you’re a teenager you’re like a sponge, you just soak it in and it stays in your DNA. Whether you were into metal and got into electronic music, there’s always going to be a part of you that wants to thrash out.
“I met Sam in Bristol, just coming to shows, and we connected as people really. He’d done this compilation, one was with Jack Sparrow, and it was really interesting; they were kind of jungle tunes, but they were half time — what I would call the slow/ fast combo. So they were skitty, jungle-y tracks but they had this nice, slow underbeat. So I wanted to explore that with him because I’d been doing the same thing myself. So we sat down and we made the Small Victories record for Exit. And we just became mates, through music, but we hang out. “There’s an inground sense of culture here (Bristol), that isn’t just transitory and fickle. There’s been creative people doing interesting stuff here for a long time – a long time! There’s something more inherent about this place that’s just there. And I don’t think it’s going to get too gentrified out, I think it’s just here and it should be celebrated and supported. Because London doesn’t care, basically. I feel like Bristol cares.” Talking about his upcoming track with Binga, BUNIT002, which samples an air conditioner from a hotel in Beijing, Jim explains, “I always listen out for unusual sounds,” proceeding to show me a video on his phone he had taken that morning of his flask falling over. “I knocked over one of those metal flasks and it sounded like
LOCAL TALENT // 25
an amazing idea for a snare drum. It’s not often you hear a sound like this!” Asked whether his history of competitive DJing influenced his approach to music, Jim says: “I hope not, because I don’t think art and competition should ever meet. That’s why I got out of it, actually. I just found it very frustrating. The competitive DJ thing is something that comes out of the birth of hip hop culture, where people would battle for street reputation. The DMC organisation and various other organisations have taken it into its own context of being itself. So it’s self-referential, and when anything becomes self-referential it immediately has a shelf life. It diminishes down to hardcore fans only, it doesn’t appeal to the general public anymore, and it closes its doors to
the world. And I felt like I’d explored that as much as I could, so when it comes to music, I very much drew a thick line under it and walked away.” So what’s next for the multifaceted producer? A new edits record, which has already sold out and his next Torchlight EP, (part 2.) is due out this month. “Coming out on my label (Cosmic Records) is a new EP from J(ay)A.D from Amsterdam, he’s awesome. Bjork played one of his tunes on Rinse FM, which is amazing, so he’s been recognized by one of the gods. “I have a new 12 inch coming on 31 Records — a new shadowboxing remix which is a collaboration with a guy from
Estonia called Thing, which is one of my favourite things I’ve done actually. And more shows: America in April, Australia and New Zealand in May, as well as Dimensions Festival in Croatia in August.”

SPLIT PROPHETS (ALBUM LAUNCH) SHAK OUT @ LAKOTA, 26 FEBRUARY
Bristol has a proud heritage of underground hip hop, including the likes of Krissy Kriss, The Wild Bunch, and Tricky. Fearless of pushing boundaries to create new sounds, Bristol based musicians and artists help represent the city’s culture and unique rhythm. Following this Bristol legacy by creating a raw, fresh sound, Split Prophets hip hop collective are one of the many projects to emerge out of the city that continue to make the Bristol homegrown sound stand high above the rest. Consisting of MCs Upfront, Bil Next, Res One, Paro, Flying Monk, Blanka, Datkid & DJ Badhabitz, the SP collective came together from a bunch of school friends sharing the same interests and passion for music.
and 2015’s Delph Efficacy. In just five years the Bristol hip hop collective have stormed their way to the forefront of the UK hip hop scene, and now they return with their highly anticipated debut crew album – Delta Bravo Kilo. Their album launch takes place this month at Shak Out’s 2nd Birthday at Lakota, where they join a line up including Foreign Beggars, Mungo’s Hi Fi, DJ Pied Piper and an as yet unannounced special guest, powered by the mighty RC1 Sound System and Sinai Sound System.
We haven’t really had chance to do a full crew album with everybody on it before, so this is the first one that fully represents us.
After being heavily influenced by their friends in the Bristol Se Fire collective, Sosé and Mistafire, the collective soon formed under the name Split Prophets and began releasing music with 2011’s debut EP Scribbled Thoughts, featuring Res, Upfront, Bill Next, Datkid and BadHabitz on production, and onwards to solo and collaborative projects like 2013’s Drugs, Booze and Dental Issues, 2014’s Upfront and Personal
Nitelife Magazine sat down with Split Prophets members Paro, Datkid, Flying Monk, Upfront, Bil Next and Res One ahead of the release to find out more about the upcoming album.
Upfront: “The album Delta Bravo Kilo is representing the crew. We haven’t really had chance to do a full crew album with everybody on it before, so this is the first one that fully represents us.” Bil Next: “We’ve all come in and done this one together. Even though we always consider whatever anyone’s released to be Split Prophets and always feature in on stuff and support
each other, this is the first album where we’re actually all together, with an equal amount of tracks each.” Despite this release being a full crew line up, the members of SP passionately explained how this album isn’t just about their own lives, but how it also includes the bigger circle of people and the Bristol family that aren’t necessarily rappers. In true hip hop fashion, SP are sticking to their roots and shouting out to all of those who have influenced them in the music, skateboarding and graffiti scene. Plus, unlike other SP releases featuring collaborative tracks with MCs and producers outside the collective, the group have decided to keep their debut crew album strictly ‘in-house’, with the exception of producer Sammy B-Side to show listeners how this collective have honed their skills over the years. Datkid: “I think this album is the final product of what we’ve been building towards the past few years. We’ve come from doing nothing show wise, to all of a sudden doing a couple of shows a week, so this album will show how we’ve progressed in sound and quality over the past few years.” To make sure their debut crew album sits pride of place in your music collection, the Split Prophets collective have saved money from their previous solo and collaborative releases to help take them out of their usual bedroom studio set up and into an established studio environment to create a more refined sound.
PREVIEW // 27
Paro: “Thanks to Nate the whole thing was recorded in a proper studio and he was basically the sound engineer for us who helped make it happen. It was nice to work with someone who has worked in studios and knows what they’re doing.” With the Delta Bravo Kilo release date on the horizon, Split Prophets have started their year on a high, and their attitudes for what lies ahead for the expanding UK Hip-Hop scene for 2016 also seem pretty positive. Flying Monk: “There’s definitely a wider variety and range of music coming in at the moment”. Res One: “2015 went a bit slow in Bristol when Rhyme & Reason stopped putting on nights. Before there were too many hip hop nights. You’d go to one every weekend, but then it kind of died off because everyone oversaturated it. But I reckon it’s ready to set off big again this year.” After the chaos of the new album, Split Prophets fans are promised more new material to get stuck into this year. Stay tuned for a Bil Next and Percy Filth EP, an eagerly awaited Flying Monk EP, a highly anticipated Datkid and Baileys Brown album, as well as a live show supporting Pharoahe Monch this April at The Fleece. There’s currently no confirmed release date for Delta Bravo Kilo, so in the meantime check out the Split Prophets Bandcamp to get to know and keep an eye on their Facebook page for more information. We know we can’t wait to hear it.

TIM BAILEY tim bailey Age: 34 Job title: Concert Promoter - The MJR Group
If you live in Bristol, there’s a good chance that local concert promoter, Tim Bailey has had a hand in some of your best nights out. He’s worked at The Louisiana, The Fleece and independently, before moving to the MJR Group. MJR put on shows as varied as Ed Sheeran and Public Enemy in venues across Bristol (and around the country), as well as the permanent, somewhat weighty responsibility of managing the diary of the ‘24th best club in the world’ (DJ Mag 2015), Bristol’s very own Motion. They also look after the adjoining Marble Factory – a new live music venue, which since it sprung up little over a year ago, has become a strong contender for best small venue in Bristol. We had a chat with the young veteran, who once paid Ellie Golding £50 to play her second ever live show… What’s your background and how did you end up working at MJR? I started promoting a club night whilst at University in Exeter, as there was nowhere for me and my mates to go out and hear new music. We started Lofi Hifi and it ran for 10 years. Then I started promoting some pretty wild DIY shows in Exeter City Football Club social club (!). I continued promoting once I moved to Bristol, and soon I was in-house promoter at the Louisiana, as well as promoting my own shows. I then became the in-house booker for The Fleece, putting on some amazing shows across the city, before moving to The MJR Group, a relatively new national promoter. We handle the diary at Marble Factory and Motion Bristol, alongside The Globe in Cardiff, Engine Rooms in Southampton, Reading Sub89, Leamington Spa Assembly and Camden’s Dingwalls. Why do you think Marble Factory has grown to become one of Bristol’s best music venues in little over a year? I think we’ve got a great team both at MJR and at the venue, and Motion has always been an amazing, dynamic club space. I genuinely think we have a unique multi room space, in a city full of venues! There are three bookers at MJR, with differing tastes, so we all bring something different to the booking table, and an ace marketing team headed up by Nathan, who I’ve worked with for years. What’s been a Marble Factory highlight for you? The Mac De Marco show in the main room was a mental show and the quickest seller so far too - selling out 1300 tickets inside 7 days. I’ve never seen an audience go so swoon-face crazy at an artist in a long time, ands I’ve never seen so much stuff thrown on stage: a double D bra, e-cigarettes, gum gel, a jumper, multiple beers, and glow in the dark pens. Personal career highlight? Throughout my twenties, I always had the overwhelming feeling of being watched over my shoulder by disapproving parents. I’ve definitely lost count of the times I’ve been asked when I’m going to get a real job. So back in 2008, I invited my parents down to my Eliza Doolittle show at O2 Academy. Unbeknownst to them, it had long sold out, and as we watched the show together I could see the clog ticking, and them thinking: “Ahhhh I get it now, this is his real job. He’s not actually dicing about getting wasted all the time.” They never asked me about getting a real job again! Can you describe a typical day at work for you? I work pretty extended office hours - nothing too out of the ordinary really, and go to as many shows as I can. It’s good to have that personal contact with agents and artists. Some days it feels like all I do is admin, but at least its admin at rocknroll. What’s the best thing about your job? Free stuff! In all seriousness though, watching an artist grow over the years and helping shape their career is genuinely the most satisfying thing about my job. It was great helping build Mallory Knox from the bottom of a six band hardcore bill that sold no tickets, to filling the Academy. And I’m going to Australia to talk on a music panel soon, so the free stuff is also cool!
Worst thing? I can’t really complain to be honest, I’ve spent all my disposable income on music since I was 13 and got my first cd player, so getting to work in music as my job is ace. I’ve promoted some childhood heroes (Therapy’s Troublegum 20th anniversary tour is something my 14 year old self lost his shit over). I’ve seen some incredible bands go onto to massive things (I once paid Ellie Goulding £50 to play her second show), and seeing 1500 people smiling and singing their hearts out at a show I’m responsible for is a feeling that can’t be described. Whilst I’m not saving lives in my job, I get to spread a little joy to people on their night out, and I’m cool with that. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Onwards and upwards! I’m really privileged to work for an exciting, rapidly growing company, so 39 year old me will
hopefully be promoting bigger and better shows across the whole of the UK. And hopefully my puppy, Alby, will have stopped biting my toes and eating my books. What advice do you have for anyone wanting to get into a similar role? Don’t go out to celebrate after a successful show with all the cash from the night. You’ll wake up with far less successful night’s worth of cash the next morning…if any at all.
