Hayseed Dixie at The Fleece

“Somebody in 200 years can decide, with the benefit of hindsight, if anything we did was art. In the meantime, I want to see people rock their faces off and smile.” Forget everything you know about a ‘covers band’ and introduce yourselves to Hayseed Dixie. Front man John Wheeler spoke to Nitelife magazine ahead of their show this month at The Fleece. Hailing from Nashville Tennessee, old-style rockers Hayseed Dixie surfaced in 2001 with the release of their album, A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC, a collection of ‘rockgrass’ covers played on a banjo, mandolin, and dobro. Fifteen albums later, you might be surprised to learn that the first was recorded as a joke after two friends got drunk on whiskey and decided to mess around in John’s studio. Before they knew it they had recorded 10 AC/DC songs and burned 20 or so copies onto discs for their friends. They sobered up and got back to normal life, but suddenly they found their songs popping up on radio shows across the US, with no one having any clue how. Regardless of how Hayseed Dixie started, there’s no denying they’re a talented bunch. Their first album sold a quarter of a million copies and they’ve toured relentlessly since, releasing a new album nearly every year. “I wanted to make a record that my friends could have fun playing at their parties. I reckon if you play music that you and your friends enjoy while you’re drunk, then other drinkers will likely enjoy hearing you do it. There are a LOT of drinkers out there, particularly in the UK!” The band might be most famous for their hillbilly covers, but there are plenty of originals thrown into the mix. In fact, in 2008 they released No Covers, an album of (you guessed it) no covers. John also released a solo album Un-American Gothic (2013) which was predominately original material. However, neither of these were efforts to move away from doing covers and the band don’t feel that there is any sort of stigma attached to what they do: “Every symphony orchestra in the world plays covers. We do original songs too, but not because we’re trying to prove anything to anybody. We’ve never been a ‘cool’ hipster band, but we’re not hipsters. Somebody in 200 years can decide, with the benefit of hindsight, if anything we did was art. In the meantime, I want to see people rock their faces off and smile.”

Their latest album, Hair Down to Her Grass (released January 2015) features 12 rockgrass re-workings of classics from the rock era. We asked John how they tackle the choice of which songs to include on a new album: “By sitting in a circle and seeing which songs from our youth we could remember well enough to play. We figured that if we still remembered them, then they must be memorable songs.” Hayseed Dixie will be heading to The Fleece on January 22 for a night of rockgrass mayhem. The band are renowned for their live performances, so this is one not to miss -

Dub Mafia

Bristol based band Dub Mafia have certainly taken centre stage the last few years by priding themselves as ‘one of the most popular dance acts in the UK, Europe and beyond’. The strictly ‘no backing track’ philosophy the artists bring to the stage far from limits their creativity, but instead enhances their versatile skill, allowing them to bring a blend of drum and bass, dub, dubstep, bashment and break beat into their own unique sound. In only four years, the Bristol home grown act have already ticked off a fair few achievements, with the release of their 2013 debut album Sirens, performing at Outlook Festival, Glastonbury and Nozstock festival to name a few, as well as touring overseas and putting their sound on the map across Europe. With many successes under their belts in such a short period of time, the sky is the limit for these eclectic performers. Nitelife Magazine caught up with the band before a local gig at Stokes Croft’s Attic Bar. Even during sound check, you could already feel the electrifying sounds and pulsing bass bounce across the empty space in the soon to be filled venue. For a band headlining the evening, the group were surprisingly relaxed as they chatted with us before the show. But you could tell without hesitation that as soon as these artists stepped up on stage, their calm exterior would disappear and that same electrifying sound would dominate the venue. Here’s what happened during the calm before the evening’s storm:

You have been together for over four years now and in that time, have managed to bring a fusion of digital sounds to a live stage. How did Dub Mafia come to life? Andrew: Well as three brothers we’ve been playing music and mucking about with electronic sounds and stuff for a while, and one night we saw Eva perform in a bar, so we got her number and got in contact. We were doing stuff with Snafu as well at the same sort of time and Flash was working years before that. So yeah, we just came together and had a few jams and hit it off, had a great vibe and took it from there really. Four years later, do you still get nervous before you go on stage? Aaron: I do if it’s people that I know. When we play in Bristol, that’s when the nerves kick in. Andrew: It’s just the odd one or two now for me, for some reason one gig will just jump out at you. You play around with a lot of genres that other artists would produce straight from a laptop. What made you decide to create a ‘live’ sound? Matt: I think it comes from playing in a room together rather than writing music and sitting in front of computer I suppose. Aaron: Yeah we’ve always liked live music and we’ve always liked playing music, so we just wanted to bring this digitalised edge to it.

You have a strict ‘no backing track’ policy according to your website. Why is so important when you perform? Matt: It just suits us, it’s not like we’re against other bands doing it, it just works well for us really. Andrew: You can interact and play off the crowd and you get a different vibe every gig. Whereas with computer backing tracks, you end up getting stuck to a computer. Especially being a drummer, you can really feed off each other. Flash: It means you can stretch something out as well. Andrew: Exactly, you can stretch something out and really play off the crowd. Aaron: It’s freedom. Andrew: There’s perfectly good reasons why you would use backing tracks, and we’ve even toyed with the idea ourselves. I mean, you could have a fifty piece orchestra playing with you or something, but you lose that live energy a little bit. Your 2013 album Sirens displays a mixture of sounds, from drum and bass, to hip hop and dub, but your most recent single Hero displays more house-like vibes. You are pretty versatile in your sounds, but is there a particular genre you enjoy working with? Eva: We just play what we want. We make what we like and we play that. Whose rule is it that we have to make just one certain thing? We just make what we make and if it’s good and people vibe off it, then it stays in the set and it’s about as simple as that.

NItelife Bristol Sending Love featuring Buggsy was a huge hit off your album. How did collaborating with the Bristol based artist come about? Matt: We were just really impressed to be honest, we’d seen him live a few times. Aaron: He’s just a really good live performer and he really suits us and the music we make. We just got in contact with him and it all went from there really. Would you consider working with him again? Aaron: I think we’d rather keep moving forward and collaborating with people we’ve never worked with before. I mean, it was great working with him but he’s not in the band or anything. But I guess you never know. In just four years you have managed to perform all over the UK and Europe. What have been your highlights so far, both on and off stage? Andrew: Probably doing the shows in Europe if I’m completely honest! Aaron: But that’s because it’s been different and exciting. Andrew: I think England’s got such a vibrant scene, but when you go to Europe they have it all set up so they have three people helping you and all the top kit and they really take pride in making everything professional out there. Matt: They’re much more professional out there. Eva: I don’t know, I wouldn’t say they were much more professional, I just think it’s different out there. Over here there are so many more venues in the UK per square mile than in Europe. People look to the UK for sound anyway, and they look to the UK for music, so we’re almost spoilt for choice in terms of venues and sound engineers and equipment. So when we go to Europe, I dunno, it’s just different. Aaron: I think we all like to travel as well so it brings an extra edge to our music when we go to a different country. Andrew: Its lovely going to the airport with your instruments and it’s just a nice feeling, a privilege really. Going back to your music, if Dub Mafia could collaborate with anyone, who would it be? Eva: I’d absolutely love to work with a singer called Nai Palm. She fronts a band called Hiatus Kaiyote. They’re like a neo-soul kind of band and they’ve been supporting Erykah Badu recently. Andrew: I don’t know… Maybe someone who inspired me and got me into playing drum n bass pieces, so someone like Roni Size, who’s a local hero in Bristol.

Now the Bristol music scene is close to the heart for both artists and music lovers. As performers who’ve come from this ever changing music hub, what does Bristol’s vibrant music scene mean to you? Flash: There’s a lot of experimental stuff going on in and around Bristol, more I would say than in London. Eva: I mean, people are moving here! A lot of Hospital Records producers are moving to Bristol too. Fred V + Grafix have just moved here, Dismantle is here and the whole Hench Recordings lot are here. This city is representing in a massive, massive way. There’s so much royalty from here so you can’t say anything bad about it! All you need to know is that it’s here and it’s strong. Aaron: There’s something in the water that’s for sure. Andrew: It’s all about the mixture of cultures and it’s the right size so you don’t feel lost like you do in London. London has the same mixture of culture, but you don’t get that sense of community like you do here. And finally, what can we expect from Dub Mafia in 2015? Aaron: Well, we’re hoping to spend the first part of the year doing some writing and get a few more tunes together, so we’re probably looking at an EP together next year. We’ve also got a few festivals and shows coming in as well, but we can’t really say too much as of where and when yet, as it’s still early days. I think we’ve spent a lot of time in the last few years gigging, and doing live stuff, and personally I think there are a few of us who want to take a bit more of a back seat on the live gigs and spend a bit more time writing and focusing on that for a while. We’ve kind of rinsed it a bit playing live soAndrew: We’ve rinsed ourselves too! Aaron: Yeah, we’re all sick of each other, so I think it’s time to get in the studio and write really. Andy Stewart is one of the promoters of The Fleece, surely Bristol’s most legendary venue, established in 1982 and having hosted the likes of Oasis, Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age and White Stripes to name a few. We asked Andy all about his job…

How did you get into that? I was fortunate enough to be recommended by a friend when a position became available after having four successful years programming at The Golden Lion and doing the odd show in other venues.

What do you love most about your job? The Bristol music is scene is genuinely one of the most thriving, friendly, generous, and creative industries I have ever set my eyes and ears upon and it is an absolute pleasure to be involved within it every day and to (despite my protests) get paid for it.

Can you describe an average day at work? Once I have made sure that all my numerous homeless puppy

Best moment: This year I grew a pony tail. And, despite it having nothing

to do with me, was over the moon to see a band I have championed and booked for the past eight years finally hit the big time and get the recognition they deserve. What’s your favourite music venue in Bristol besides The Fleece? The Golden Lion and The Louisiana. Any advice to others trying to get into a similar role? You should have tried better at school.

Greg Shaw

Jamie Morrison is one of the founding members of Bristol record label and party institution Crazy Legs.

Whether in the booth, the studio or the laboratory, Greg Shaw is a scientist. He strives to investigate with a fiendish appetite for music. These qualities come out in all aspects of his musical career as a DJ, promoter and producer.

DJ / Producer

Founded in 2008 by Shandy and J.Morrison (or ‘Jambo’ as he was known at the time), Crazy Legs was set up to provide a platform for innovative, forward-thinking dance music that wasn’t getting a look-in elsewhere in the city. Creative, multi-genre lineups became their trademark, blending dubstep, bassline, grime, garage and funky, laying the foundations of the bass music movement that quickly took hold of the city. By late 2010, Crazylegs was at the forefront of Bristol’s club scene. In 2012 they decided it was time to make a more concrete commitment to the music they believed in by putting vinyl on the shelf. Warmly-received debut releases from Ziro and Toyc have paved the way for the label, which has become as significant as the clubnight that gave birth to it. With the record label in full swing, Jamie has turned his attention to producing his own music, releasing tracks on Alfresco Disco under the name J.Morrison. His eagerly anticipated first solo E.P is due for release early this year.

Greg started to gain recognition on the scene from 2006 as a resident for Mooch!n, Dirty Blue and the Bristol staple, Just Jack. He has stayed on the cusp of every wave of house trends, whilst remaining true to his energetic yet refined style. He experiments with all sorts of DJ equipment and is just as comfortable behind turntables, CDJs or controllers, occasionally throwing in an Ableton Live set to show off his talent as a live artist. After his residency at Just Jack, Greg wanted a new challenge and started Drama, a late night after party at Timbuk2. Over 7 years Drama grew from its humbled beginnings to become one of the most respected and recognised names on the underground house scene, booking huge DJs such as Andre Crom, Sidney Charles, and Saytek often for their first set in Bristol. Greg has an eye and an ear for what makes a good DJ and a good producer. In recent years Greg has applied his scientific methodology to learning everything he can about production and music. Some of his earliest productions were signed to Baroque Records and his recent collaboration with Nifty has been picked up by Pro B-Tech.

What have you learned today? Lots about Genghis Khan and that Chaz Yankel was the guitarist and key player for The Blockheads.

What was the last book you read? I just re-read Kerouac’s On The Road. Really fueled the fire for more travels.

Favourite track of all time? Impossible to say just one. I’ve currently got mild obsessions with Bobby Womack and Fela Kuti.

Favourite thing on TV? Q.I. Stephen’s a G.

Worst chart song at the moment? I’m not remotely snobbish when it comes to chart music. There’s a lot of good stuff that manages to creep its way into the charts these days. That said I’ve hated everything I’ve heard by Nicki Minaj – grating! Who are your top 3 acts right now? Session Victim, Island, Hodge. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Probably something food or booze related.

Are you afraid of anything? Watching Jaws as a kid gave me a life long fear of the open ocean, which I’ve spent years trying to conquer. Tell us something people don’t often know about you... I’m a massive secret fatty. I’ve always got food in my record bag. What are you doing tomorrow? Finishing my first solo E.P out on Alfresco Disco in the new year. Sounds like a shameless plug but that genuinely is what I’m doing. Oh and walking the dog.

What have you learned today? Today I learned that over ONE BILLION Jaffa Cakes are eaten every year. Laid end to end, you could create a bridge of Jaffas from London to Sydney and back again.

What was the last book you read? Last book I read was Northern Lights by Philip Pullman which is part of the Dark Materials trilogy and was turned into a film a few years ago called The Golden Compass.

Favourite track of all time? Für Die Liebe which was produced by Matthew Dekay & Lee Burridge.

Favourite thing on TV? That would be American Horror Story. Each season is a completely different story. The same actors are used for each series but playing different roles.

Worst chart song at the moment? Most of them but would have to say the David Guetta’s track Dangerous. Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? Guy Gerber, Maceo Plex and Sidney Charles. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? I have always liked and dabbled with photography and image design so I would probably be doing that instead.

Are you afraid of anything? Wasps, why are they even on this planet?! Tell us something people don’t often know about you... For my day job I am a Specialist for a Pharmaceutical company. What are you doing tomorrow? Packing up some of my more mobile parts of my studio, so I can work on some tracks whilst I’m away for Christmas.
