Bristol indie rockers Three Kings High can’t be accused of coasting off the success of last year’s debut album, Hail. The 6-piece got straight back into the studio to bring us a follow up They Think They’re People, coming out this September. Three Kings High, consisting of Joe, Elo and Samuel on vocals, with Sam also wielding a guitar, production and keys from Tom, Luke on drums and Rowan on bass, have been described as “a band at the peak of their powers” by BBC Radio 6’s Tom Robinson – and we’re inclined to agree. We asked Tom to answer our 10 questions…
Sequences Festival takes over Motion this month for an-all day party powered by three mega sound systems across three stages: Critical, Deep Medi and The Blast. Bristol’s The Blast welcomes South London producer, Radar Radio resident, and dubplate cutter, Riz La Teef. The young producer is steadily making a name for himself on the scene with impressive bookings from Fabric to Outlook Festival - especially after his recent Boiler Room set (a coup in itself ) was met with critical approval. Expect a bass-heavy selection of funky, grime, dubstep and UK garage at Riz La Teef’s set for Sequences.

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Today I learnt that emails to Nitelife result in an immediate payoff, in ways of a feature! 2. Favourite track of all time? The impossible question… There’s a few tracks I always listen to regularly, but I’d say currently it’s Wanna Be Adored by The Stone Roses 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Anything by The Rubberbandits. Horse Outside maybe, or Danny Dyer. Failing that, Aga-Doo by Black Lace will pick up the energy. 4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Aame Impala, Lord Huron and Deap Valley. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Trying to work in music, or peddling my wares being an artist. A bad artist. Realistically, we all work day jobs, so probably just doing what we’re doing at the moment, but with less holiday days being stuck in a van on motorways travelling to gigs.
6. What was the last book you read? Perfecting Sound Forever. It’s a book that goes from the start of sound recordings and wax cylinders, up to today’s techniques and is really interesting. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Right now, Joe’s favourite programme is Council Estate Hussies, on the adult channel. But for a more in depth view, he’s ‘Sex Panther’ on XHamster. Look him up. 8. Are you afraid of anything? I’m afraid that in the immediate future, the world will have humanoid lizard Donald Trump and court jester Boris Johnson in power. If that’s the case, I’m checking out.

EVA LAZARUS
Unless you’ve been hiding under a boulder the past year, the name Eva Lazarus will be a familiar one. Bristol’s reggae, soul, and drum and bass queen first made a name on the local scene with a stint as Dub Mafia’s front woman. But since parting ways with the bass music group last year, she’s quickly established herself as a bona fide solo artist, with her first solo EP on the way… “When I moved here, I was a solo artist. But there is so much going on in the city that it’s really hard not to get involved with other people. I just threw myself into the music scene as much as I could and then ended up a part of lots of different projects, which was amazing, but during that time I kept shelving my solo stuff - so I wasn’t really writing as much on guitar any more, I wasn’t really approaching producers so we could make songs for my own purposes… “I guess it just feels like the right time now. Dub Mafia was coming to a natural end with us working together and I thought it was the right time to start pushing my own stuff.” Those following Eva’s career would have been able piece together an idea of her varied music tastes.
Over the years she became known for collaborations with Dub FX, Hospital Records’ Danny Byrd, bass heads Stanton Warriors, funk-influenced saxophonist, beatboxer and looping artist Mr Woodnote, and UK hip hop favourites Dr Syntax and Pete Cannon.
It might come as a surprise to some that there are no collaborations currently on the EP. Although Eva has just sent the first two tracks off to mastering, so we can hope to hear some remixes popping up from her many friends across the industry soon.
Less astute fans could have also just checked out her Soundcloud page for her free Konichi-WahGwarn mixtape, which showcases a range of all her collaborative work over the previous couple of years.
“In terms of vocal features, there’s nothing yet on the EP but there are a million people I would love to work with. I really want to work with Roots Manuva! I think he’s such an incredible talent. I just think he really encapsulates what British Caribbean culture is like. Another one is Rodney P - he’s hip hop, he’s UK, his Caribbean influences come through really strong in his writing, in his choices of dialect… He is an originator for the scene!”
“The EP is very much reflective of who I am as an artist. It’s rooted in lots of different styles, so reggae and jungle, reggae and drum and bass, reggae and soul, reggae AND… “There are people who say that if you do too many things it’s confusing for the listener and people can’t connect with you, but I feel like the music industry has changed so much in the last 10 years that you can have more than one sound on a record – people aren’t idiots! You can get on board with it if it’s delivered and packaged in the right way. I guess the unifying feature is that it’s my writing and my voice, so if you like those two things then there’s a chance you’re going to like it.”
Not one to do things by halfs, Eva is also planning on setting up her own record label, which the EP may (or may not) come out on, she explains… “There is interest in the tracks that I’m working on, however I want it to come out in the right way. And if that means that between myself and question mark label, we can’t work it out in a way that we’re both happy with, I’ll put it out myself because… if you want a job doing well, you do it yourself!”

“Because it takes so long to get a project ready, if a label wants to put it out, that’s amazing and I’m always really grateful for that, but then there’s the complicated structure of release schedules... So you can’t put it out until so and so has put out their album, and I guess the label facilitates my impatience. So I can put it out when I want to put it out and not have to wait for anyone else. “For now, it’s purely about facilitating my own releases, but the dream would be five years down the line that I’ve got a roster of amazing people that I could release their music for them and help them.” So as a singer, songwriter, model, businesswoman and most recently, an author – Eva is writing a book about the natural hair movement called Hey! Nice Afro!, it’s tempting to assume that Eva was always commanding the limelight, but it wasn’t always so easy to be centre of attention’ she says. “I used to be really embarrassed. The confidence thing has been a really slow build to where I am now. I’ll quite happily get up and sing in front of everybody here, it’s not an embarrassment to me, but I used to feel really self-conscious about it. “My auntie is a singer and her and my mum could hear me singing in my cousin’s bedroom when I was about 7 or 8, we were singing to the radio, and they said ‘come in here, come and sing to us.’ And I pulled the duvet off the bed and sang underneath it! “Another time, I was at a family party and I was in a show at school, so they made me sing to them and I had to do it from behind the door. So I’d do it, but I didn’t want to do it in front of people – I’d die a little inside! “I think it’s just about clocking up the miles. The more experience, the more stage time you have, the more you get comfortable with it.” Eva, along with Mr Woodnote and lil Rhys, is billed as one of the headliners at this month’s Brisfest: soundscape on 30 July - the city centre festival devoting itself to supporting local artists and venues (more on pages 26-27), which is more than fitting for an artist so involved in her local scene. “I moved here because of the sound that comes out of here. I could have moved to Manchester, I could have moved to Birmingham – I’m from Stafford, which is in between those two cities… I could of moved to London! But I like the sound that comes out of Bristol, so supporting the music scene that welcomed me is really important. “I actually taught at BIMM the other day. So it’s something that I’m really willing to give, because it’s something I have experience with and it’s something that I enjoy doing.”

GHOST WRITERZ
Last month, London based reggae, hip hop and bashment fusion Ghost Writerz gave the Attic Bar a taste of some of their finest bashment and dancehall sounds as part of Tun Up! Carnival Sessions. Despite the absence of producer Sleepy Time Ghost, Jimmy Screech and G.O.L.D took to the stage with a larger than life stage presence and bass heavy DJ set. Jimmy took ownership of the decks and delivered back-to-back dancehall sounds, whilst G.O.L.D spent the majority of the set on the dance floor mastering the mic. Ghost Writerz family member Shiffa Dan also joined GWz on stage, taking possession of the mic to showcase his expertise and techniques amongst the crowd. By the end of their set, the Ghost Writerz trio had succeeded to have every crowd member on the dance floor. Nitelife were warmly welcomed by Jimmy Screech and G.O.L.D backstage before their set. After being offered a rum and ginger beer, we sat down to find out how Ghost Writerz came to form. Both Jimmy Screech and Sleepy Time Ghost were recognised within the music scene as part of the Unit
137 Sound System collective long before the formation of Ghost Writerz, but in 2012 Jimmy and Sleepy decided to pair up and experiment with a new project. Jimmy talked us through how their debut album GWz All The Way came to light… “Every Friday we’d hook up and have a four hour session just messing around and making music. We ended up making nearly a track a week with G.O.L.D and Shiffa Dan coming in on our sessions. We did that for a year and a half and before we knew it, we had our first album. We just became really productive in a very short period of time. “At first the whole thing was an experiment. Rob Luis from Tru Thoughts originally came to see us looking for a single, but after he heard more of our stuff he decided he liked it all and wanted us to do an album. Everything just progressed from there really”. Shortly after appearing on the Tru Thoughts radar, Ghost Writerz signed to the newly formed Tru Thoughts sublabel Sharp & Ready to unleash their new material, whilst maintaining an independent identity.
“Tru Thoughts were looking for a new sound at the time, but they didn’t want to badge it under Tru Thoughts. We wanted to remain independent as well because we already knew what we wanted to do and who our audience was. We didn’t want our music to be too influenced by the label’s identity but wanted to learn from them, so being part of the sub-label Sharp & Ready made perfect sense to all of us.” Not long after signing to the new sub-label, Ghost Writerz released the jungle infused anthem How We Living, with hip hop producer Pete Cannon. “Our friend JC got us in touch with Pete Cannon. I hadn’t met Pete before, but as soon as I heard some of his beats I knew we could make something work. We ended up putting the track together really quickly. Sometimes when we work with people we just sit down and listen to music, but other nights we’re really productive and get loads done. That just happened to be one of those nights.” Ghost Writerz 2015 debut album GWz All The Way, features a host of artists including hip hop godfather Rodney P, G.O.L.D, Shiffa Dan and Amy True.
REWIND // 25 “When we initially wanted to do the GWz project, it wasn’t necessarily about just me, Sleepy and G.O.L.D, it was about trying to create a world and bringing people into it. We took a big influence from people like Chase & Status and Gorillaz who have got albums full of collaborations, so we followed in their footsteps.” For a collective who have produced some of the most eclectic rhythms spanning across the spectrum of hip hop, bashment and jungle, it’s unsurprising to learn the group share a similar mentality when it comes to music. “We are influenced by lots of stuff like bashment and dancehall, but we grew up in the drum and bass era, so we appreciate that as well. Really we just like whatever. If it sounds good, it sounds good and that’s the way it should be,” explains G.O.L.D. Despite appreciating music of all genres, Jimmy was keen to express his love for the music he grew up with and the invaluable impact it has made on modern music we hear today. “We like to incorporate what our culture has been about in our music. We’re British but we’ve got a strong reggae and bashment influence just from growing up and listening to it when we were kids. We all grew up listening to it, so for us it’s like an extension of who we are.” “The thing is, I don’t think a lot of people realise how the music they listen to today stems from reggae. Before the sound system culture, there were a lot of reggae bands playing in Jamaica and when these sounds developed into analogue records, people started using tapes to create things like delayed effects and reverbs. This technique eventually went worldwide and now you’ve got music like hip hop, R&B, reggaton and every effect used in every pop song. “I think from that point onwards, if it was in the charts, it had a reggae influence. I guess now though the big debate is why aren’t dancehall artists being credited for a lot of the stuff that’s out? But I don’t want to go too deep into that one!”

Along with the growing success from their debut album and singles like the Quantic Spark It remix and How We Living, Ghost Writerz are beginning to witness appreciative fans going that extra mile to show love for their music. “We’ve had some random videos posted on YouTube before by a couple of dance groups who had made their own videos dancing to our tracks. When people do things like that, it makes you realise your music must’ve really touched that person for them to go so far out of their way. It’s an amazing feeling.” Ghost Writerz are now well underway with the creation of their second album, but even though the trio are continuing to ride the wave of success from their debut release, Jimmy and G.O.L.D praise the importance of Sleepy Time Ghost’s role within the collective. “People should look out for Sleepy because he is king. He just seems to take everything and anything and turn it into something, even if it’s offcuts from one of our tracks. “We believe Sleepy doesn’t get the credit he deserves. As much as we contribute, he’s the core of the whole thing, he’s where the ideas start.” Just before the Ghost Writerz duo took to the stage, G.O.L.D revealed his true love for the Bristol music scene. “We’ve been here loads of times, but one of the things I’ve really noticed about Bristol is that it really is a music lovers’ city. We visit a lot of places, but whenever we come to Bristol there’s always a positive vibe. Everyone just lets go and enjoys the music and no doubt we will see that tonight.” Be sure to keep your ears out for Ghost Writerz second album surfacing on Nice Up! Records later this year, featuring the likes of Dabbla and TY, plus a Unit 137 compilation and solo EPs from Sleepy Time Ghost, Jimmy Screech and G.O.L.D.

SMITH & MIGHTY BRISFEST, 30 JULY
After a two-year break, the much-missed Brisfest returns on 30 July under a brand new incarnation, Brisfest: soundscape. This year, the festival moves from Ashton Court back whence it came - Bristol’s city centre, where it originated in 2008. Promising to truly represent the city’s current musical landscape: the ‘new Bristol sound’, dozens of up-andcoming local artist will play across 15 independent venues, including The Station, Old Crown Courts, The Fleece, Mr Wolf’s, Stag & Hounds, Small Horse, No.51s, and Crofters Rights. The jam-packed line up boasts the wonderful Eva Lazarus (read more on pages 22-23) with Mr Woodnote and lil Rhys, Spectres, Kahn, She Makes War, Jay Drop, Gotsome, The Carny Villains, Mad Apple Circus, the Allergies and Laid Blak Soundsystem, to name a handful. It seems only right that the whole thing should be overseen by out-and-out originators, pioneers of the Bristol Sound – Smith & Mighty, who headline this year’s festival. Rob Smith & Ray Mighty helped turn all ears toward Bristol
in the late 80s with their production of Fresh Four’s top 10 hit, Wishing on a Star; although they’d long been causing a stir in the underground with earlier tracks like Anyone and Walk On By.
For me, those points where it overlapped were the most exciting. Nitelife was thrilled to talk to Rob Smith, whose contribution to the music scene has been steady and fundamental since he decided, during a stint as a grape picker, that he was going to make music. He takes us back to 1988… “Before it all kicked off, there was this infamous club near Clifton, Dug Out, which everybody went to six days a week – those times were great because it was really inventive. It was very exciting musically - there were so many different crews: punks, Rastas, soulboys… and it just seemed to overlap. And, for me, those points where it overlapped were the most exciting. Because you were getting these
clashes or mixtures of musical energy, which I think really went toward the Bristol Sound being what it is – not being afraid to mix and mash stuff up. There was no influence from record labels; they were left alone to stew in their own soup. “For us, to be honest, we were not that ambitious about everything. Our goal was to get a record out and that was as far as it went. And when we did Anyone Who Has a Heart and we got feedback that it was really kicking off, we were pretty shocked. And then when Wishing on a Star went to number 10, we were like, what’s going on?” After this initial surge, unfortunately, followed a few years of quiet from the producers. Due to the shortsightedness of a record company, the hugely-anticipated album never came. After a few years, they were able to free themselves from restrictive contracts and finally released their first album Bass is Maternal on their own label, More Rockers. “We were quite happy doing things independently, but then when labels got involved it all kind of went a bit belly up,” says Rob. “We signed a quite major record deal and it soon became apparent that the label didn’t really understand what

they’d bought and it was just badly managed. So we ended up spending five years trying to please these record companies that didn’t really know what they wanted and weren’t really happy with what we were giving them. It was a dead period after such a lively start.” Rob and Ray went on to release more music sporadically until early 2000s, but eventually Smith & Mighty gave way to other projects. Today, Ray is focused on his reggae project Sledgehead, and Rob has had huge success under his dubstep moniker RSD, which has seen releases on Tectonic and Punch Drunk. “RSD came about when I was putting some tunes together and Flynn (Fresh Four) came round and said, ‘How long have you been making dubstep?’ I didn’t really know what he meant! “The guys from Tectonic and Punch Drunk got to hear some stuff and said they want to put some stuff out, and that’s how it started off really.” “I decided to get into music a really long time ago, before I met Ray or before any of that was going on… I was an electronics engineer working in a factory and I really hated it, so I gave it up and went off grape picking, then I decided
that music was what I wanted to do. And so I’ve just always continued to try and do that really, and I’ve been involved in a lot of projects along the way.”
got into it and there was so much going on after. I’m just so impressed with Bristol, it’s brimming over with talent and hopefully it always will be.
Talking of other projects… Reggae fans may well have been hearing whispers of new Bristol collective Riddim Wize - who will also be making an appearance at Brisfest comprised of Rob as RSD, Scotty, Hippy Lee, and Laid Blak’s Joe Peng.
“Being asked to play Brisfest is fantastic. Funnily enough, we’ve just got back in touch with MC Kelz, who was part of the crew back in the day, so he’s going to be joining us as well.
Bristol is brimming over with talent and hopefully it always will be. “It’s a group of DJs and MCs who are like-minded. It’s based around reggae mainly, but not strictly,” Rob explains. “At the moment it’s a fun thing, but there’s going to be some projects coming out from the middle of it pretty soon. “I’ve also got a project going with Joe Peng, we’ve got an album’s worth of stuff, and that’s coming soon. “I love Bristol so much. There was a lot going on before we

MARCO BERNARDI Marco Bernardi Job title: Owner of Elevator Sound / Venue Manager at Motion
Since moving to Bristol from his native Glasgow around six years ago, Marco Bernardi has got well and truly stuck into the Bristol nightlife and live music scene. His Bristol résumé includes running Timbuk2 and the (now-deceased) Empire Theatre in Old Market, but Marco currently busies himself with his role as senior venue manager at the almighty Motion, as well as running his independent machine music store Elevator Sound, which is based out of Idle Hands record shop in Stokes Croft.
Music makers are also encouraged to visit the store on a more casual level, where the shop’s staff are eager to help. “The staff I’ve got in the shop now are like what I was like at 20 years old. They’re really enthusiastic – especially with Eurorack and Modular. We’re the only shop that sells Modular, so they’re super into it and super vibed about new versions coming out. “The guys in the shop have just made these sample cassette tapes, which we sell for £9.99 that people can use in their tunes. They’re 8 bar and 16 bar samples of drum machines and synth loops, stuff like that. It’s half an hour’s worth of audio. They’re on the shop’s Bandcamp page or you can buy them from the shop.
So with an independent music shop, a successful music career and a fairly full-on job running Bristol’s biggest club, what does a typical day look like for Marco?
“I went to Chris when I finished running Empire Theatre in Old Market and said, ‘I’ve got this idea…’ “I wanted it to be a Schneiders Buero or a Rubadub, I didn’t want to be another PMT or another Gak or another big super fucking music store that sells guitars and PAs, I wanted to be a specialised underground music store and that’s where it’s at now.
“I wake up in the morning and the first thing I do is go down and open up my shop. I’m there until 1pm, I come to Motion and I’m here until 6pm – that’s my daily routine.. “The hardest thing about it is trying to reverse your body clock every weekend - it’s very, very tough. Because you’re doing it without booze or drugs, and the stuff that I need to deal with in here on a minute-to-minute basis, from when we open that door to when we shut, is mentally straining. There are a lot of decisions that need to be made and it’s all on my head. By 4/5am in the morning you hit a wall and you’ve got another hour to go. You get home at 7am, and then you’re up again at 1pm… and if you’re doing a double night, you’re back down here at 8pm. Then trying to reverse your body clock on Sunday to get back to a normal Monday – that’s the difficult bit.
“Chris’ record shop is the only place I would do this, because Idle Hands sells records to the type of people that I want to target for my brand. People who are very into specialised electronic music. “Chris obviously specialises in a lot of reggae, so we get a lot of the reggae guys coming in and then they’ll see the shop and ask if we sell delay pedals, stuff like that, so it’s a continuation from the record shop. “All these things helped build the shop to where it is – being in Idle Hands, being in that part of Stokes Croft – we wouldn’t survive anywhere else.” Far from being just a black-and-white business venture however, Elevator Sound makes a huge contribution to the bounty of current and aspiring musicians in the city.
“We also run a monthly event called Escher (similar to London’s CDR events ). I wanted to have monthly gatherings in the shop because people can sit behind their computer too much now, and I wanted it to be more of an interactive thing again. “So once a month in-store, people who make tunes from wee guys with their first copy of Ableton to guys who are well known in the industry come along. We bring beers, we have a big system in the shop and we just play their tunes and we discuss each other’s tunes – it’s great. It can be anything from grime, to bass, to electro to techno.”
As well as all that, Marco has also taken on the weighty responsibility of venue manager at Motion – the world’s 19th best nightclub and number two in the UK, as voted by DJ Mag.
“My role entails everything from licence control, to making sure you get two and a half thousand people in here, blaring loud music at them and then getting them out safely, with as few problems as possible. It’s my job to make sure everything runs smoothly. Everything is based on knowing the license inside out, and knowing what people can and can’t do.”
“But I always had this idea of doing something similar to Rubadub in Glasgow and the guys who run it are very close friends of mine. Before they did music equipment, they did specialised underground records, similar to what Chris at Idle Hands does…
“We get people who are beginners, who go to BIMM or dBs, who are learning music software. Elevator Sound runs the Ableton facebook user group - we are the people who choreograph all that, we write it all and manage it all.
“Coming up musically, I’ve got releases on Berceuse Heroique, Frustrated Funk, Rawax, and just out this month, I’ve done a collaboration with Luke Eargoggle on an amazing electro label in London called Brokntoys.”
Marco oversees everything at Motion with the help of numerous members of full-time staff, including bar managers, tech managers, event managers, marketing managers… and everything in between.
“It was an idea that was in my head when I first moved to Bristol about six years ago. I came down and I started working in Timbuk2 and then Empire, and then when that finished it was a case of what am I going to do now? I’d only ever ran clubs or worked in a music shop.
Seeking out specialist equipment for seasoned professionals as well as going above and beyond to help newcomers install and learn to use new music software.
“Playing Berghain was obviously a highlight, and playing Glastonbury. But I had this one experience in Hong Kong - I was playing up in an old disused village in the mountains. There was only about 150 people there - it was a totally illegal party. And when the sun came up, we were looking down over the bay in Hong Kong and I was DJing in the forest with just about 60 people dancing in front of me and we’d been up all night – that was probably one of my favourite career moments.
“But it’s all dependent on what I’ve got on at nights. If I’m DJing or got gigs on, I need to work around that. I’m away this weekend in Barcelona and I’m away next weekend in Berlin – it’s all about time management. “We’ve also just made some drum machine posters, which are old classic drum machines, but edited to bring them a bit more up to date. They’re all on the website or in store as well.” Many music fans will also know Marco Bernardi as a DJ and producer, with releases throughout his 20-year career on dance music giants Soma, Clone, Creme Organization, Planet E, White Noise, Berceuse Heroique, Mathematics, Frustrated Funk and more. “I’ve been releasing records since I was nineteen. I signed to Soma when I was 20, so I’ve had 21 years of records now. I still enjoy making music and releasing records, but I just have other things in my life I have to juggle it with. “I’ve been really lucky, I’ve played from Australia to Serbia, to Lithuania, to Russia and all over. I’m so appreciative of that and never have taken it for granted and never will.
“I need to only look at certain inboxes when I’m in that zone. So if I’m in the shop in the morning, I don’t look at any Motion emails. If I’m at Motion in the afternoon, even if the shop is phoning me, I ignore it. And that’s the only way it works. I can’t jump from inboxes because my day will just become mush. “It’s good because it’s not just a 9-5 - I get bored really easily. I don’t call myself an entrepreneur because I’m not a businessman. I just wanted to open up a wee shop, selling musical equipment and luckily my experience helped me do that.”
