Rozelle

MallorY Knox

Gritty, synth-driven, alt rock group Rozelle are a perfect example of how Bristol’s music scene can produce truly unique talent. With so many genres having a foothold here, Rozelle draw from their own influences and surrounds to beautifully meld together genres and create something entirely new. Simultaneously haunting and uplifting, their sound fuses melodic pop, garage rock and electronica with a grunge attitude. Fronted by songwriter Hayley Smith, Rozelle have been steadily gaining a fan base in Bristol and beyond since they formed in 2014. Over the last couple of months, they’ve been tucked away in the studio working on some new material, which they’ll be unveiling at their headline show at Mr Wolf’s this July. Hayley answers our 10 questions...

2018 marks a brand new chapter of Mallory Knox with an exciting new direction, after bassist Sam Douglas stepped up to take lead vocals after the departure of Mikey Chapman in February. Their latest single Black Holes is already turning heads and offers an intriguing insight into what’s to come from the Cambridge alt rockers. New frontman Sam has described the new music as ‘terrifying and exciting’ and ‘the most energised music Mallory has ever written’. They’re coming to Bristol this month to headline Fat Lip Fest 2018, which takes over Nelson Street all day, with dozens of bands spread across The Lanes, SWX and Rough Trade Records. THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Flying Vinyl are 100% awesome and if you turn up 20 minutes early for everything when in London life is ok. 2. Favourite track of all time? Tough one, we all love a lot of music. Prince – Purple Rain, or Rush – Alien Sore, or Tame Impala – Let it happen... Can’t pick! 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? LCD Soundsystem – North American Scum, to remind everyone that society does exist. Or any track by Maribou State, because they are amazing and chilled vibes. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Bodega, Art School Girlfriend and Black Honey are cool. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? That is really hard to imagine! Maybe a painter or something else within the creative world. If that failed, then I’d become an illusionist or magician of some kind, and if that failed I’d hide away forever on a secluded and pretty island.

THOSE QUESTIONS...

6. What was the last book you read? Nutshell by Ian McEwan.

1. What have you learned today? That the world cup is bad for my liver.

6. What was the last book you read? Shay Given’s autobiography.

7. Favourite thing on TV? Gordon Ramsey’s Hotel Hell and The Defiant Ones – a cool documentary about Dr. Dre and Jimmy lovine.

2. Favourite track of all time? Just the Way I’m feeling by Feeder.

7. Favourite Thing on TV? Game of Thrones.

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Let’s go to Bed by The Cure.

8. Are you afraid of anything? Cambridge’s relegation back to the Conference.

8. Are you afraid of anything? Heights, social media as it’s taking over the world, being locked in cold, dark, grey room for over 24 hours, and narcissists with bad breath. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... This one time I did a beer funnel at a festival, I thought it was gin and lemonade, thought I was drunk for aprox five minutes, then realised it was just lemonade... sugar rush was intense! I also nearly drowned in harem pants in Morrocco after jumping into sacred waters. And sometimes I fall over without tripping – I think it’s because I’m tall.

4. Who are your top three acts right now? Feeder, The 1975 and Black Foxxes. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Cambridge United Manager.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you? I could have been a professional cricketer if I kept at it... maybe. Who knows, I stopped playing! 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Probably losing money on the Royal Ascot.

10. What are you doing tomorrow? Writing music and working on production sounds for a couple of new tracks we shall be playing on 21 July at Mr Wolf’s.

24 // LOCAL TALENT

LOCAL TALENT

BANDULU

Known collectively as Bandulu Gang; Kahn, Neek, Boofy and Hi5ghost have played a huge part in building an important hub for instrumental UK grime right here in Bristol. As well as releasing between them on key labels like Deep Medi and Innamind, and operating under a number of aliases, including Young Echo, Wu Yen, O$VMV$M and Gorgon Sound, they all also run their own record labels. Kahn and Neek head up Bandulu Records and Young Echo, while Boofy runs Sector 7 Sounds alongside Lemzley Dale, and Hi5ghost runs PaperCranes.

Now, eyes are turned west from London for current movements in instrumental grime Keeping things strictly DIY, Bandulu and a network of friends have built a healthy micro industry for underground music in Bristol. Their own labels combined with friends’ imprints, such as Hotline, Pearly Whites and NoCorner, make up a network of truly underground labels who have been working together for the best part of a decade to drive the Bristol scene forward. Now, eyes are turned west from London for current movements in instrumental grime. Not only are Bandulu influencing a younger generation of producers, who frequently cite them as a major inspiration,

they are using their now well-established platform to help bring younger artists through. They regularly cut tracks from unknown producers to dubplate, and recently invited upand-coming local producers Drone, LUCY, Sir Hiss and Bengal Sound to play a Bandulu Records takeover at Trinity. ‘We have a bit of a platform now to help promote other artists and I think we’re conscious to try and use that as much as we can,’ says Kahn. ‘We’re playing their tunes in sets, so if we’re pushing them through in that way, what’s the point in just playing their tracks?’ ‘We shouldn’t just be playing their songs,’ Neek agrees, ‘we should be giving them an opportunity to play their own music. It’s not conceited, it’s an organic thing of we like their music and we wanted to give them the opportunity to play at a venue that not many people get to play from out of nowhere.’ ‘It was about recognising what we’ve got here for the younger generation,’ says Boofy. ‘They’re all good producers and sick DJs. Not many people that young have the opportunity to play at Trinity. It’s a massive venue and it takes certain nights to be able to fill it out enough. For me, first time I played Trinity was amazing.’ While putting on regular events isn’t a route that Bandulu want to go down, they host a couple of special events a year that aim to encourage the community vibe that Bristol has quite famously lost since the days of Subloaded – the Pinch-run Bristol alternative to London’s legendary FWD>> nights. While Bristol is rife with excellent small and big venues, relentless venue closures over the years has left us with a lack of something in between. This has made it hard for nights

to sustainably grow to the point of a musical movement, as dubstep was able to 10 years ago. ‘Even though there are a lot of good people coming to Bristol’ says Hi5ghost, ‘No one wants to go to Motion every weekend, despite how good of a lineup it is.’ ‘When I was growing up, there were good medium sized clubs and I think they were a good starting point for people,’ says Boofy. ‘Obviously we do have great small venues, but there’s no in between for that kind of thing anymore. It’s either a really small club that gets packed within five minutes, or too big of a space that is painful if it’s not full. ‘I think in a way if we didn’t put on the Bandulu nights, there wouldn’t be much for that kind of sound. If we’ve got the capacity to put on these nights, I’d rather do that than let everything go to fucking flats to be honest.’ However, Bandulu do have plenty of praise for several nights across various genres going on in Bristol at the moment, big and small. They also aren’t willing to blame the growing student masses as the sole threat Bristol’s music scene, as people often do. ‘It’s been really important in Bristol’s history to allow the meeting of both,’ says Kahn. ‘If you look at artists like Pinch, Peverelist or Appleblim, for example, they didn’t actually grow up in Bristol. They were here as students or otherwise but they integrated themselves with what was going on in the city and now they’re identified as classic Bristol artists. It’s about integrating students with the local scene. You can’t let it go too much either way, because if it’s just Bristol people it kind of gets stale and peters out because there are not enough people

LOCAL TALENT // 25 or possibly even the beginnings of an evolved sound that doesn’t differentiate between the two. All four producers are associated with both 140bpm genres and much of the music coming out of the Bandulu camp seems to fall somewhere between the two. It’s appropriate then that Bandulu are returning to bass-heavy one-dayer Sequences Festival at Motion this month for a stage take over, but this time alongside dubstep institution Deep Medi. Between the two labels, they’re bringing in the likes of Commodo, Egoless, Dubkasm and Mungo’s HiFi; with, of course, sets from all of Bandulu and Medi label boss Mala. ‘We’re combining the two brands and bringing together our friends and people on our labels at Sequences,’ says Neek. ‘The fact that we’re all playing on the same sound system is a translation of how both sounds go together. It’s the same spectrum of sound,’ says Boofy. ‘When we first started out DJing and buying records,’ says Neek, ‘we didn’t necessarily differentiate between grime and dubstep as two separate things. Playing a grime record and a dubstep record next to each other wasn’t out of the ordinary. And the first DJs that I saw and responded to the most were doing that and mixing those things together.’ ‘If you think about the early FWD>> nights, some of the most legendary sessions were when artists like Skepta would turn up and people would be mixing grime alongside the early dubstep tunes.’ says Kahn. ‘It wasn’t so defined as these are the traits of dubstep and these are the traits of grime,’ says Neek. ‘When they started to brand it and give it formulas, the music lost a lot. But when dubstep disappeared and became a bit of a bad word, it allowed the music to go back into a creative zone rather than people trying to make money out of it. So that combined with grime getting popular again, means we’re now in a fertile place and there is interesting music coming out.

Bristol grime hit the nail on the head. By the first or second Bandulu record, people were paying attention ‘Whatever you want to call it, whether it is grime or dubstep, I don’t think we’re conscious of it having to be either. If we can mix it and we can play it in our sets, then we’ll put it out.’ ‘It’s a product of our inspiration and our influences,’ says Hi5ghost. ‘From years of listening to grime and dubstep and not really separating either, then making your own thing from that, it falls somewhere in between.’ ‘It’s not necessarily a new sound,’ says Neek. ‘It’s more of an evolution of where dubstep and grime is at now. The lines are blurred again, which is the interesting bit. What was so exciting when we first got into it is that these are two genres that are the same speed but are quite different. But they blurred together when you mix them, producers from both genres worked with each other, or a dubstep producer worked with a grime MC... And it seems to have gone back to that.’

in the city to sustain it. You need the student crowd and the interest from that community, but at the same time, if it’s too student-y, it puts off people like us who have been going to those nights for years.’

Drunk, and Tectonic was bashing out release after release, which were all classics all at once.’

‘It’s a weird knock on effect of having such a healthy scene at one point that everyone wants to suddenly move to Bristol,’ says Boofy. ‘That’s when you see housing going up and venues getting shut down, because they need space for all these people wanting to come to the city.

‘It’s mad to think,’ says Kahn. ‘Even earlier when I was packing my records for a set, looking at all the different stuff from 2008 and 2009, that period, it makes you realise. At the time you just feel like that’s what’s happening, but when you look back now, it’s like, fucking hell that was such a fertile period. There was so much stuff going on and it wasn’t basic copies of things, it was interesting boundary-pushing stuff.’

‘When all the dubstep nights were popping and it was still quite fresh, Bristol had a mad hold on that. We had Punch

It’s not hard to imagine that in ten years, we’ll be looking back at this as another golden era for Bristol grime and dubstep,

‘It’s a new sound for Bristol,’ says Boofy. ‘We were never really taken seriously by anyone else before that, London was the hub for grime – that’s where it started and that’s where everyone focussed on. When we started making grime a bit more wide and records were actually starting to go, that’s when people started taking it seriously. And I don’t want to say it’s just us, but at the time I can’t remember many other people making grime outside of our circle in Bristol. ‘I don’t think it’s been a completely new concept, because the sounds are all inspired by old sublow sounds, before grime was called grime. If you go anywhere throughout England – Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield; everyone has got their own kind of thing. It’s just that Bristol grime hit the nail on the head. By the first or second Bandulu record, people were paying attention.’ In terms of what’s coming next on Bandulu, they remain typically tight lipped about what’s in the pipeline due to contract issues, although they hint at something big on its way after summer, and Neek promises more Bandulu releases before the end of the year. ‘It’s never been about rushing records out for us,’ says Neek. ‘We’re not trying to churn out records. We might have an idea and sit on it for six months or a year before we even start to get it going. It’s just when we have tunes that we really feel need to be out there.’

ESDR PRIDE SPECIAL: SHANGELA Bristol drag institution Eat Sleep Drag Repeat (ESDR) are bringing in Rupaul’s Drag Race star Shangela for a Pride special at SWX this July. Whether you watch the show or not, there’s little chance you haven’t heard about it or the reams and reams of positive comments about the show’s representation and normalisation of the world of drag. Now in its tenth season, the reality TV show has made its way into the mainstream, with Rupaul t-shirts currently on sale in Primark. The show is praised for capturing an audience from all walks of life and speaking to people in different ways. Rupaul’s Drag Race is a much-needed sensation that’s taken the LGBTQ community and beyond by storm. A particular queen that’s captured the hearts of Drag Race fans since her first appearance on season 2 and more recently All Stars season 3, is the box-fresh Shangela Laquifa Wadley. Famed for being of the most professional and entertaining queens in the Drag Race alumni, fans have watched the iconic queen grow right from the beginning of her drag journey in season 2, all the way through to her near-win on the latest season of All Stars 3. When we arranged an interview with the international drag superstar ahead of her Eat Sleep Drag Repeat Pride special at SWX this July, it’s safe to say we were pretty excited. But it was only when she answered the phone with her catchphrase “Halleloo”, we knew we were in for a one-of-a-kind interview with one of the most iconic queens to come out of Drag Race. Diving straight in to discuss her upcoming Bristol Pride show, Shangela promises fans will be treated to a ‘full comedy and performance extravaganza’, where she will perform some numbers and share stories about her life, whilst celebrating an extremely important time of year. ‘Pride to me, is the time of year to remind our community about the great things we’ve accomplished and the challenges that still face us. It’s also a great reminder that we should continue to love each other and continue to work and fight for equality. That’s what I want to encourage at Pride; love, equality and W.E.R.Q – Werq!’ As we move on to talk about how Shangela first got into drag, the queen admitted the character has always been part of her. The entertaining queen gravitated towards theatre and backup dancing for local queens in Texas before taking up drag professionally. ‘The character has always been there,’ she says ‘I’ve just put a name to it now’.

No matter how you do it, where you do it, or how long it takes, you should always focus on being the best you possible Throughout her appearances in the show, Shangela has always come across strong and content, with self-love and confidence shining through no matter what is thrown her way. ‘You’ve got to commit to being the best you possible’ Shangela encourages, when asked for advice on practicing self-love. ‘No matter how you do it, where you do it, or how long it takes, you should always focus on being the best you possible. ‘I also like to advise everyone who’s starting out on their drag journey to develop a character and not to be shy. Drag is meant to be fun, it’s meant to be messy sometimes and you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be having a good time with it. If it’s not fun, it’s not worth doing.’ This year Shangela shook the ground for all Drag Race fans when she returned to Drag Race once again, this time as a contestant on the highly anticipated All Stars 3. Shangela may have been a fan favourite to win from the start, but a controversial twist in the finale episode meant that the crown went to blonde bombshell Trixie Mattel. The unexpected turn of events left fans in shock for weeks. Parents of younger fans were sharing videos of their distraught kids who couldn’t get over the news, leading Shangela to give a heartfelt message to her younger fans. ‘After the finale aired, I just immersed myself in my work, so I

PREVIEW // 27

kind of blocked the results out of my head for a brief second. When I finally got out of the bubble I was in I realised I had received all these messages from helpless parents showing me how upset their kids were after the finale results. It broke my heart. ‘I wanted to respond somehow so we reached out to the parents and sent a video to their kids to thank them for their support and to reassure them that I’m doing just fine. I think a lot of other fans felt the same as those kids, so it ended up becoming a viral video for all fans to see.’ Since the All Stars 3 finale aired, Shangela has been busier than ever enjoying life both in front of the camera and behind the mic, including her reprised role in Hurricane Bianca 2, the release of her single Pay Me and her new single with Todderick Hall, taken from his latest album Forbidden. Undoubtedly though, the biggest achievement to date for the drag star is her feature in Lady Gaga’s upcoming and tipped to be Oscar-

nominated film, A Star Is Born. ‘Lady Gaga was a jewel to work with. She was a dream come true and a real class act. We got to sit in the dressing room together for an hour or two to have a chat and, honey, I told her every story I knew. She would say ‘Oh Shanji, tell me another Shanji!’ It was an experience I will never forget.’ Shortly after discussing what type of gown Shangela should wear to the Oscars if A Star Is Born is nominated, the conversation moved back to Drag Race, this time to find out who Shangela would like to win the season 10 finale. ‘I can’t fault anyone in the top four. Eureka has done a great job all season long, Aquaria is young, but has strong work ethic and I think Kameron is stunning. I’ve known Asia O’Hara for years though, as I used to be her back-up dancer. She’s my girl, so I’m routing for her the most.’ In terms of what the future holds for her, aside from joking that she’ll be back for All Stars season 4, Shangela promises we’ll

be seeing a lot more from her as she continues to push herself with her concrete work ethic. ‘You know me girl, I work hard and I am professional. When I finish touring at the end of the year, this would have been my sixth year touring straight. I’m always on the road and I’m always ready to try creative new projects. ‘My long-term goal is to definitely pursue more acting opportunities, because that’s where my heart lies. But apart from that, I just want to continue bringing my fans together and telling more of my stories.’

36 // THE INFLUENCERS

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

DANK PARISH / BOOMTOWN the industry and what actors have to go through and feel lucky just to get a foot in the door – it started to infuriate me pretty quickly, so I knew I was going to step away from that. ‘I’d always been a festival fan, so me and a few mates were really just looking at how to get into festivals for free. Back then it was walking around for a few hours in character and having a play with people to get a free ticket. Out of the blue, one of our friends was offered a gig at Secret Garden Party. All they told us was that they were looking for a crew, minimum budget, and they wanted to give people the experience of being buried. We jumped on that straight away and just being people that we are, we went above and beyond and created this whole massive show called It’s Your Funeral. We build a church, a morgue and a graveyard, and create this 40-minute show that gave people their own funerals. It was pretty intense, I’d be performing there for ten hours straight as the priest. We got massively involved in it and it was hugely popular. We called ourselves The Church of the Sturdy Virgin and that’s where the company The Dank Parish was formed.

Though it takes place outside the quaint city of Winchester each August, Boomtown Festival has always felt like an extension of Bristol. Not only does the city annually clear out as we drive east to make up a significant portion the Boomtown population, the festival is also run out of Bristol and built out of the ashes of the old free party scene Bristol was once famous for. Alongside arguably the biggest and most diverse lineup of any UK festival – especially with Glastonbury taking a break this year – Boomtown’s ever-evolving theatrical storyline continues to grow to beyond massive proportions as the festival embarks on Chapter 10 this August. The Boomtown story is now as much a part of the festival as the music, and a big chunk of tickets are sold each year well before the lineup is released. One of Boomtown’s main theatrical directors, Martin Coat officially moved his co-founded immersive theatre company Dank Parish to Bristol in January, having split his time between London and Bristol over the past few years. As well as helping plan for the biggest and most outrageous Boomtown yet – an annual habit that makes it hard to imagine how the festival makes any money – he’s also hoping to inject some year-round Boomtown fun into Bristol. Martin has been a major part of the storyline since Chapter 5, after impressing organisers with his Dank Parish show the year before. Now, as one of the main theatrical directors of the whole festival, as well as running Boomtown’s new Paradise Heights district, Martin estimates he has anywhere from 800 to 1000 people under his remit, with Dank Parish alone bringing a team of 180 people – a fat increase from the crew of eight he first took to Boomtown in 2013. ‘I graduated from drama school in 2010 and was pretty disillusioned by the industry instantly,’ Martin explains. ‘After putting myself through drama school for three years to try and become a professional actor, the idea of

‘Boomtown had always been my favourite secret little festival. I used to go there just for my own naughty little rave up, solely as a punter for the first three years. It smacked of Bristol and had that creativity and chaos running though it that really appeals to me. So in Chapter 4, we decided to take our funerals there. ‘It was the year that Arcadia were at Boomtown, so in their story at the time aliens were landing and effecting Boomtown. Which was great to explain a stage, but it didn’t really feed out further than that. So Dank Parish put on a big spectacle at the end of our funeral shows, where we raised the Sturdy Virgin and she came down to save Boomtown. We set fire to our set, burnt it in this massive grave, hit the lasers and then the virgin came out to save the rest of Boomtown. ‘The idea was that I actively wanted to get involved in the story and start pushing it further, because it was obvious to me that this was a world that could take this overarching narrative. So I did all that and documented it and sent it in to the guys at Boomtown and said, “We’ve had a great time here at your festival, but I want to go a lot further with it. This is my vision of what you’re doing”. It was similar, I think, to where they wanted to take it, but they didn’t have anyone in place, so I just kind of shoehorned my way in. ‘From Chapter 5 onwards, I took control of the story. I worked the first year for free, because I was pretty certain that it was going to be a game changer. And most importantly, I knew that no other festival could come close to achieving what we’ve done with Boomtown. I chucked everything at it and from then it’s grown and grown and grown, and now I would say that the storyline is the unique selling point of the festival. Even our major trailer that went out in February is completely storyline based. It has nothing to do with the music, nothing to do with anything else, it’s all about the immersive world that’s being created.’ While Martin still dips his toe into the world of stage

acting, usually taking up a couple of roles with touring shows each year, his work with Dank Parish and Boomtown is where his head and heart is at. He tells us that it takes a core crew of around 30 people working all year round to put on the four-day extravaganza that is Boomtown. ‘What really drove me down this line is that my biggest passion in the world is creating new audiences for theatre – playing to people who don’t normally go to the theatre. Especially in the fringe scene, you’re always playing to your friends and family or the same old crowd, no matter how good the work is. Whereas at festivals you’re suddenly creating really in-depth, playful content that’s putting the audience at the heart of it.’ In terms of how music and immersive theatre go handin-hand, they don’t, says Martin. And Boomtown doesn’t try and force an unnatural relationship where there isn’t one. Boomtown and its residents celebrate both aspects of the festival uniquely. Its endless sideshows and secret rooms mean that you can lose your friend for half an hour, only to find out that they were hoisted several feet in the air taking part in an aerial boxing match with inflatable gloves. It’s also where I’ve seen many of my favourite live sets. ‘One of the things I find really annoying is the amount of events that call themselves immersive. Anyone that throws a night, sticks a DJ on and puts a little bit of wanky decor up, claiming “four rooms of immersive experience”, when there might just be someone on the door in a lab coat checking you in and that’s it. It’s reached the extent that immersive has now become a bit of a dirty word because it’s been so bastardised. ‘What most people tend to create is a music night with some theatrics around it. And to my mind, that’s not theatrical because it’s got no real content to it – it’s just tits and teeth. Which is all fair enough, but there’s not so much of an art form around it in terms of story telling. ‘It’s great when the two do marry, but it would be impossible for us to be too heavy handed with that at Boomtown. We try to programme the music to fit the districts and then each district obviously has their own storyline. But we can’t book acts and tell too many of them to direct themselves towards the storyline – although you’ll be surprised how many artists are now trying to get involved. Fatboy Slim has been desperately trying to make himself a character in the story for ages.’ Being based out of Bristol, Boomtown has naturally fed back into Bristol’s creative and music scene year round, with parties popping up from the likes of Barrio Loco, Boomtown’s hip hop district and The Invisible Circus – another of the core theatrical influencers at Boomtown, who also look after Bristol’s The Loco Klub. Although this winter, we may be about to see an even more direct link up, with Boomtown taking over a space in Bristol for more regular events. ‘We’re looking to start throwing some bigger Boomtown events in Bristol through winter – to be confirmed,’ says Martin. ‘We’re hoping to throw events that are theatrically led, with music around them. So you might get a secret headliner at the end, or some big finale piece. But it’s a theatrical experience where music works around the theatrics, rather than the other way around. ‘We’ve got our own premises that we’re working on. We have all these sets that we build that only come out in the summer, so the idea is to throw these big parties and give these sets new life. Then hopefully from that we can build newer sets that can transfer to the festival. So that’s our big aim outside of the festival itself and that should all be coming soon. ‘The thing I love about Bristol the most is that the horrible sense of industry that I so hated in London, just doesn’t feel like it exists here. We had a really great community of us in London, all of us with our own companies and we’d come together and share each other’s work, but there’s still a sense of industry hanging over it. Whereas here, I feel like we just have this wealth of artists and if anyone’s got a project, no matter how

THE INFLUENCERS // 37

big or small, everyone will lend their skills to it and everyone is up for it. There’s a plethora of skills available and everyone’s really generous with their time and their art. It feels like a community rather than industry. ‘You do need to know your worth, and quite often, especially as actors, you end up doing those horrible, corporate shitty jobs that you have no real interest in, but if three of them pays your rent, that’s justified. Then

you have those jobs that are all about the work and the passion and making art. ‘The best piece of advice I ever got was, “Don’t think of this as your career, keep it as your hobby – no matter what”. And I definitely live by that. If I get paid, that’s a bonus. Obviously you can only give so much time to something before you have to make sure you’re getting paid, but as much as possible, keep it as a hobby. The

minute it starts becoming about counting your time, you won’t enjoy this industry. If you’re not having fun then you’re doing it wrong.’
