ARMCHAIR COMMITTEE
DJ MARKY
Bristol’s Tom Hackwell, Dave Larkin and Dan Frost are as likely to serve up a round of bludgeoning swamp rock, as they are a skewed melodic-blues elixir. One part intoxicating wall-of-noise highs, one part distilled melodic lows.
Brazilian icon and drum and bass pioneer DJ Marky comes to Bristol this month to celebrate the launch of his long-awaited debut artist album, My Heroes - scheduled for release 15 June.
Band
DJ/ Producer
Armchair Committee have carved a reputation as a ‘magnificent’ live band, ‘showing hints of the Foo’s rampant melodicism and Jack White’s howling blues’ (Kerrang! Magazine - KKKKK). Along the way they have shared stages with the likes of Royal Blood, Young Guns, Jim Jones, Revue, Lucero, and many more. After spending much of 2014 locked inside Coach House Studios, Bristol (previously home to Massive Attack and Portishead’s earliest material), the band will release their debut LP, Half as Gold, but Twice as Grand in 2015. Recorded and produced by long-time collaborator Brendan Davies, and mixed by Sean Genockey (Reuben, Jamie Lenman, Manic Street Preachers). This June, the band finish up their UK tour with a headline set at Stag and Hounds’ Swampfest. We ask bassist Dave 10 questions.
Upcoming shows Swampfest, Stag & Hounds - June
13
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? To never have sushi for lunch and Mexican food for dinner the day before a 7-hour flight. 2. Favourite track of all time? All time? Nope can’t do it! Although the track that first made me want to pick up an instrument and try to play it was ‘The Lemon Song’ by Led Zeppelin, so that’ll have to do. 3. Worst chart song at the moment? I just googled ‘UK Singles Chart’ to find the answer to that question and read the words ‘‘Where Are U Now’ by Skrillex and Justin Beiber’’, which sounds like everything terrible about music, so that. Or something involving Ed Sheeran. 4. Who are your top 3 bands/artists right now? Metz, Young Widows and Tom Waits are current staples. The new Metz album is a bruiser. As for the rest of the band, tour van tunes vary from Delta blues, to Washington hardcore, to country depending on who shouts loudest.
No stranger to success and an icon in his South American homeland, DJ Marky is an internationally renowned DJ and producer and label boss of his own Innerground Records imprint. Igniting dancefloors with the same passion for music he first started producing with two decades ago, DJ Marky’s compilations, mixes and remixes number over 100 - including edits for Everything But The Girl, Claude Van Stroke, Fatboy Slim and Deadmau5 - and it’s high time he got to work creating an artist album. The album’s lead single, ‘Silly’ sees a hazy, whimsical vocal layered over Marky’s signature acoustics and relaxed Brazilian groove - a playful introduction with a hint of his jungle roots. My Heroes explores the full spectrum of drum and bass - from full-tilt club fair to laid-back grooves - as well as a fluid mix of other musical flavours. The debut album is a testament to both the innovative producer - and endearing personality - that DJ Marky remains.
Upcoming shows Psyched x The Blast: Summer Experience, Lakota and Coroners Court -
June 5
THOSE QUESTIONS... 6. What was the last book you read? On the Road by Jack Kerouac.
1. What have you learned today? So far, nothing.
7. Favourite thing on TV? Family Guy or QI.
2. Favourite track of all time? Skyy - ‘Here’s To You’ has to be my favourite.
8. Are you afraid of anything? We’re all really precious about certain instruments / amps we own, so losing or breaking them is a terrifying thought. Although we do end up losing or breaking them quite a lot.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? It’s got to be Hazard’s ‘It’s A Secret’.
9. Tell us something people don’t often know about you... I once sold Karl Pilkington a pool table cover. He said it was “to stop Suzanne’s cat from shitting in the pockets”. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Getting over jet lag and then heading to the studio to fix some broken stuff and do some rehearsing for our tour.
4. Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? Right now, producer wise I’d say Ivy Lab, Calibre and Hazard. My top three DJs are probably Calibre, Fabio and Jazzy Jeff. 5. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? To be honest, I’ve no idea!
6. What was the last book you read? A book simply called ‘1973’. It’s a Brazilian book about the music movement in 1973 and how the music changed during that year - it was quite an important time. It was also the year I was born as well! 7. Favourite thing on TV? Football, always! 8. Are you afraid of anything? My biggest fear is dying far away from my home. 9. Tell us something people don’t often know about you... I’m really scared of rats! 10. What are you doing tomorrow? I need to record a new mix for Fabric, pick up my son from school and then watch the Sao Paulo game tomorrow night.
5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I discovered recently that pinball machines are still being made, are awesome, and are really, really addictive. So I’d probably become some kind of competitive pinball...wizard.

REWIND // BEST OF LAST MONTH
RHYME & REASON: HIGH FOCUS TAKEOVER Bristol is recognised as a city that delivers an explosive line up of hip hop events all year round, thanks to promotors like Rhyme & Reason nailing it every time. Previously bringing some of the finest hip hop acts like Slum Village, Lady Leshurr and Pete Rock to Bristol’s doorstep, you can always guarantee any event from Rhyme & Reason to be a memorable one. Last month, Rhyme & Reason gave Bristol a feast for their ears with a High Focus takeover, featuring some of the biggest names who’ve helped sculpt the sound coming out of the UK today. Featuring support from Luui and Motion Enterprise, the High Focus line up gave a taste of some of HF’s finest roster of artists with Cracker Jon & 2Late, Jam Baxter, DJ Fingerfood and the headliners of the night - The Four Owls. Nitelife headed down to the event with the intention of chatting with The Four Owls after arranging a few minutes with the respected artists. Being a big fan of the High Focus collective since Nature’s Greatest Mystery dropped in 2012, it was a pretty huge to finally sit down and have a chin wag with the influential MC. We waited around for a while, but a couple of Red Stripes later learnt that the Owls had not long left their nests and would be arriving a little later than planned. When we were finally taken upstairs to chat with the artists, we were met with the sight of four tired owls scoffing kebabs, trying to muster the energy to get on stage after last night’s High Focus 5th Birthday Celebration in Brixton. It was pretty clear we weren’t going to get a hoot out of these guys tonight, but we didn’t let that stop us from enjoying the night and appreciate the sounds of some of our favourite artists. The night started off differently than your typical R&R event, with a Chesham based live band and MC called Luui delivering a unique blend of sounds. Marrying styles similar to The Roots and the psychedelic electric vibes of Hendrix, the Luui ‘experience’ gripped audience members’ attention, with a polished sound that’s been hiding in the shadows too long. Next up, Motion Enterprise took to the stage with DJ Ryno behind the decks. The Gloucestershire based collective featuring Sketchster, Kadenza, Catchy P, Farai, General Hindsight and Stromboli took everyone by storm last year with the release of the highly anticipated LP Perpetual Motion. Since then, the collective have been up and down the country showcasing the release. The energetic collective picked up the crowd after a mellow start to the evening and shook it up with tracks like ‘Welcome to our World’ and ‘Guess Again’. The group cracked jokes on stage between tracks, but you could tell from the well-rehearsed delivery that Motion Enterprise are serious when it comes to putting on a good set. After two great support sets to start off the night, it was clear people were ready for the High Focus takeover. First up, Croydon based Cracker Jon and 2Late took to the stage to bring beats from their 2014 High Focus debut release You Can Take the Cracker out of Croydon. The combination of crazy hairstyle from Cracker Jon and fully charged bars and contagious beats left the crowd hyped for Jam Baxter and Four Owls. By the time Jam Baxter took to the stage, the crowd were warmed up and ready to hear lyrics from one of the finest, slickest delivering MCs in the UK. Jam Baxter is recognised as one of High Focus’ favourite MCs, with solo projects like Gruesome Features, and his recent release So We Ate Them Whole. Baxter had the crowd in the palm of his hand as he spat bars from tracks like the horror show ‘Brains’ and collaborative project with Jon Phonics, ‘Fresh Flesh’. Despite being a one man set, Baxter’s larger than life presence took over the whole stage and even spilling into the crowd as he jumped in to the pit, mic in hand. A whistle stop tour through Baxter’s discography got the crowd bouncing to the playful bassline and piano loop to ‘Ever’. His sharp precision and delivery had the crowd hanging on to his every word. Baxter, we salute you. We witnessed a seamless transition as Baxter jumped off stage, and the sounds of the opening to Nature’s Greatest Mystery flooded the room. The Four Owls swooped on stage wearing their iconic owl masks and despite celebrating the

NItelife Bristol
High Focus 5th Birthday in London the night before, Verb T, Fliptrix, Leaf Dog and BVA still managed to deliver a set like it was their first. Opening the set with ‘Lights Off’, the four artists ruffled some feathers as they whipped the crowd into a frenzy with tracks from instant classic Burning Vapour, to the floor-shaking Not Like Before. ‘Rice Torture’ and ‘Defiant’ were the tracks from their latest release Natural Order that got heads moving and hands waving to show respect to the four artists. Shout outs were made to Leaf Dog and his brother Illinformed for sculpting the sounds of the owls with their beats, with a couple of performances from Verb T and Fliptrix from their solo albums thrown in for good measure. To close the set, the crowd were blessed with the anticipated delivery of the ground breaking DJ Premier produced track ‘Think Twice’, before DJ Fingerfood closed the night behind the decks, dropping some of the finest hip hop beats. Whether you like the fact or not, High Focus Records are the backbone of hip hop in the UK and it’s nights like this that confirm it. Hats off to Rhyme & Reason for once again delivering a top night. Be sure to check out future events from the hip hop promotors in Bristol.

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
KAHN

NItelife Bristol Catch Kahn in Lakota this this month when Psyched and The Blast team up to present ‘Experience’ on 5 June. When you started producing grime there wasn’t a very big scene going on – how did you get into it? I think I must have first heard about Grime at school but I got really into it when I met Neek and he showed me his Slew Dem, Roll Deep and Neckle Camp records. I can remember getting really into Logan Sama’s ‘War Report’ series around the same time and, like with dancehall, I started identifying who the different MCs were and the different styles. Once I heard tracks like the Wiley war dub ‘Sinner’ aimed at The Movement and artists like Cemetary Warriors using the patois flow, I was hooked. People tend to associate the grime scene with London. Can you trace its growth in Bristol for us? Well, the Grime scene in Bristol had already been going on before I got interested in the music, I wasn’t old enough to get into clubs during the proper heyday of it, so I guess I missed a lot early on. The people I was aware of at the time were KHK (Kold Hearted Krew, the crew that Joker is part of) and DJs like Blazey who supported me and Neek early on and is back in the scene here now which is wicked. I came into it a bit later with the Sureskank Convention crew and club night which Neek started in 2006. We used to do nights at The Tube, which unfortunately shut down in 2010 so a lot of kids don’t know about it now, but that was a great platform for us all to hone our craft as DJs. For a time The Tube and Sureskank Convention was one of the only places I was aware of in Bristol regularly playing grime and booking grime artists, so I like to think those years helped solidify the sound here. In more recent times, there’s been a new generation of local artists putting Bristol on the map for grime music and I’m excited to see what the future holds. Is the grime resurgence a good thing for the genre? Grime never really went away, it just went underground. Much like the dubstep scene has gone back underground now after getting caught up in mainstream hysteria. I do think there’s many people in the grime scene that have been working hard for years and deserve more widespread recognition so the recent exposure is positive in that respect. I guess the worry with these things is always that a sound gets really popular and then gets rinsed to a point where no one wants to hear it anymore, but people getting into the original vibe of the music and not some sanitised, pop imitation is only a good thing in my opinion. Do you think dancehall could be headed for a similar revival? My issue with the modern dancehall coming from Jamaica is that so many of the artists sound the same, especially with the current obsession with auto-tune, which there’s definitely a time and place for but it gets a bit ridiculous after a while. For me, golden periods in these music styles happen when there are strong, identifiable personalities in the music. I mean just think how different Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Elephant Man, Capleton, Lexxus, Ward 21 and all these artists were from each other in their style and flow. It’s the same in grime, all the original top MCs had their own identifiable style and weren’t afraid to be themselves. As soon as that gets lost I lose interest personally - but don’t get me wrong, I’ll always love dancehall. You’re also big on the dubstep scene, with releases on respected labels like Deep Medi. Could you choose one genre over the other? I love the energy of both styles for different reasons and I can’t really compare them, they connect with different aspects of my musical personality. The only real difficulty for me arises in the studio, often I find it tricky to focus on just one project for an extended period of time as there’s so much music I’m interested in. Why did you decide to stick to vinyl-only for your label, Bandulu? In the music community we’re part of in Bristol most of our contemporaries play vinyl and dubplates and often release music exclusively on that format, so it’s not that unusual for us. We have no real issue with digital formats but we feel vinyl best suits our music.
We’ve come to the point where naysayers can no longer deny that grime is back. With Skepta performing on Later… with Jools Holland last month, and Stormzy also appearing on the primetime show, the longtime underground music has been thrust under the noses of mainstream audiences.
But the duo really made their names known the releases ‘Percy’ and ‘Chevy’ on own label, Bandulu Records.
Although Bristol producer and selector Kahn would tell you grime never went away.
We caught up with Kahn in the midst of his second North American solo tour.
Kahn, with partner in crime Neek, has been quietly working away on the scene since they started running their Sureskank nights in 2006.
“It’s been great,” he says. “Overall the shows have been even better than my tour last year and the reaction to the grime stuff in particular has been surprisingly positive.”
As well as their own solo projects, the pair also work together under the pseudonym Gorgon Sound with more of a dancehall leaning.
Finally, what are you up to the rest of the year? Me and Neek will be heading to Japan in July for our first tour out there which we’re really looking forward to. Apart from that, I’m working on a new album with the Young Echo collective and a bunch of other projects.

Tune-Yards // Motion, June 7

Tune-Yards (stylised tUnE-yArDs) is the project of American looping artist Merrill Garbus. Tune-Yards first album, BiRd-BrAiNs, recorded using only a handheld voice recorder, was originally self-released by Garbus in 2009 on recycled cassette tape before being picked up by 4AD – the label she now shares with off-centre media darling Grimes. Since then, her playful hip hop and dub music, has incited audiences the world over. This month, she heads to Motion, with her boyfriend and bandmate Nate Brenner. “We love coming to Bristol – and not just for Pieminister! We always have such a wonderful time in Bristol and I have good friends that live there.” Tune-Yards’ third studio album, Nikki Nak released last year, drew widespread critical acclaim. It seems that experimentation is still key for Garbus on the new record, pushing the boundaries of her songwriting and proving just what she can do with a ukulele, looping pedal, and a pair of lungs. “I started as a solo performer and was really bored with myself –
28
bored with the combination of my voice and a ukulele. “A friend suggested that with a looping pedal, I could kind of accompany myself. And that’s how I got started.” It would seem reasonable to presume that anyone who would throw themselves into such a complex art as looping, must have fair amount confidence in their musical ability; a slight arrogance even, in wanting control over every element of their output. Far from that, however, it was actually her insecurity that found Garbus running a one-woman-show. Despite growing up with a set of musicians for parents, ongoing arts and theatre training, and a knockout voice; Garbus didn’t believe she was worthy to play in a band, as she was doing at the time. “From the point of view of being an ‘untrained’ musician, I had a complex about not being a good musician – particularly around my band mates who were jazz trained. Doing a solo project was a way to allow me to explore and push all the musical limitations I thought I had. “I think I’ve gotten past a lot of that. Luckily, now I feel like I have a right to be a musician as much as anyone else.”
Looking at Garbus on stage, though she certainly looks like she’s having fun, we had to ask whether, with so much going on under her pedals, it was possible to truly let loose. “It depends on where you are in the tour cycle. Right now, because I’ve practiced a lot I can relax a bit,” she says. “I’m using all my limbs and relying on my sense of rhythm - it’s not unlike what a drummer would be doing. I’m using every part of my body that I can. “Ringo did it!” she says. “Singing while playing the drums, plenty of people have done it. So in that regard, I do think it’s a matter of practice.” And on the subject of fun, there’s no better word to describe her on-stage wardrobe. If you catch her at Motion this month, expect to see face paint, an eye-aching palette of colours, and at least a few pom-poms. “I guess it’s a freedom to do whatever I want,” she explains. “For a long time I was really bashful about what I wore and I think a large part of my life was trying to hide in my clothes. Tune-Yards marked a big change for me in my life in a lot of ways, and one of
NItelife Bristol them was that I wasn’t hiding anymore. “I want to be great and be my shining self - and also have the most fun with clothing ever!” Unsurprisingly, as well as producing on Tune-Yards tracks, the multi-talented artist has now produced for a few other artists as well, and hopes to keep it up. “I love producing records now. Especially when it’s for someone whose music I believe in. And music I want to see, perhaps more selflessly, come to fruition – it’s much less about my ego as a songwriter and more about making someone else’s sonic dreams come true. “I have dreams about collaborating with people, but I also believe that some of those dreams are able come true, so I might keep them a secret for now. “I would like to produce some more hip hop tracks, there’s that kind of production which is more about beat-making, and I’d love to work with various hip hop artists. There’s a band called Thee Satisfaction – maybe that’s my answer – I hope that I’ll work with them.” With the release of Nikki Nak, Tune-Yards continue to be uncategoriseable, with several influences pulling the tracks in different, yet harmonious, directions. Her time spent studying African styles of music, drumming and dance shows in the rhythms of the tracks, as well as more obvious influences like R&B and rock music. “Where I live in Oakland, California, there’s a lot of awesome indie R&B that plays on the radio. But I’ve also had my days of listing to classic rock, like Zepplin, and I grew up on the Stones. “There’s a lot of folk from different parts of the world like Eastern Europe and Bulgaria that has really inspired me. And different versions of what people might call world music – in other words, music from places other than the West.
I want to be great and be my shining self - and also have the most fun with clothing ever!” “Recently, I’ve been listing to a lot of soul songs from places like the Ukraine and Turkey. And there is really amazing hip hop being made in Turkey right now. “I tend towards music that’s rhythmically interesting. That doesn’t necessarily mean drum machines, just music that’s intriguing to me in some way.” What’s most interesting about the rhythms in Garbus’ music however, is how they are so at odds with the lyrics she spouts. Take lead single from Nikki Nak, ‘Water Fountain’ , where cheerful beats and shouts of “woohaw!” are offset by lyrics like “Nothing feels like dying like the drying of my skin and lung / While we just sit here while they watch us wither till we’re gone.” And if the meaning wasn’t clear enough, Garbus later went on to found charity The Water Fountain, which raises money to support organisations dedicated to water issues, like pollution and accessibility to drinking water. “I like to steer away from messages and more toward questions,” she says. “But the juxtaposition is deliberate, yes. I think that makes for more interesting music personally. “When musically something is extremely beautiful or joyful, you get swept up into the sound of it. And for me, it fills up the music in a very complex way if the words aren’t exactly matching to that celebratory quality. “The music I tend to attach to is, if not a strong social justice message, a real human experience. Stuff like The Talking Heads for instance, it’s unclear what those words mean, but there’s so much you can take from them. I think that kind of abstraction has always been compelling for me. “Just bringing music into the world doesn’t have a shallow meaning. Not a shallow apology or a shallow love song – I want to do something deeper.” Talking again about her upcoming Bristol show, Garbus says: “What I like to give the audience is a sense of doing the impossible. With looping, it is really difficult - and I like that. I like that we’ve worked hard enough to put something on stage that feels amazing to an audience. So expect to be mind blown! And to really have a great time.”

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENCES WITH
Matt-Royston Bishop
Matt-Royston Bishop Age: 35 Job title: Assistant technical manager
I’m standing on the stage of Bristol’s O2 Academy. Today it’s empty, but it’s recently seen the likes of Snoop Dogg, George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, Basement Jaxx and James Bay perform. Today we’re meeting O2 Academy Bristol’s assistant technical manager, Matt Royston-Bishop to get a bit of insight into what goes on behind the scenes of a big live show, where people like Matt are crucial to the production, but rarely seen by the untrained eye. “That means we’ve done our jobs well,” he says. ”If the show runs smoothly, you shouldn’t be able to tell that we’re here.” After a quick tour of the backstage area and a brief play around on some of the equipment, we sit down with Matt to get into more detail about what he does. “I do a 50/50 split of the concerts and club nights that happen here with another guy called Mickey. Mickey predominantly specialises in lighting and I predominantly specialise in sound, although there’s a degree of overlap. “I do a fair bit of lighting, as well as all of the other stuff that goes into the concert, like staging, décor, all that kind of thing… It’s multi-faceted. “On a regular show here will have a couple of audio guys, maybe a lighting guy, and myself or Mickey. So the minimum would be four people, and then for a lot of shows we probably have anything between two and ten stagehands. It’s quite a fluid industry, so we use all freelancers.” Knowing what a competitive industry audio engineering is, we wanted to know how Matt got to where he is today and what advice he could give to anyone else trying to follow the same path. “I’ve done all sorts of jobs,” Matt explains. “I did a music degree
30
and I play bass, so I’ve played in bands and toured with bands. I’ve worked in studios, I did some youth work, I’ve worked in guitar shop, and then I started doing some freelance stuff with a local PA company before I got a full time for Thekla - I used to run all of the sound for their gigs and clubs nights there. And I’ve been working for the Academy for about four and a half years now.
“The first thing we’ll do is unload their equipment. And the first thing to go up will be any video or lighting or staging – sound tends to happen last.
“There’s definitely an allure. I think people think they’re going to spend all their time hanging out in dressing rooms, drinking Jack Daniels and maybe moving a few knobs up and down, but the reality is that it’s a profession like anything else. It has the same demands of any other profession, and also very interestingly, it’s a profession where you can’t be late. Shows happen every single day, on time. And there’s no excuses really – it just wouldn’t wash would it? If you came to see a show and you they said, ‘sorry, you have to wait outside for an hour, we’re still finishing off!’”
“The backline guys with the band would probably spend that time between about 2pm and 4pm changing strings on guitars, tuning drums, making sure the keyboard works...
He continues: “Like anything, you need to be in the right place and hopefully the right time will happen. What I mean by that is you’re not going to become a sound engineer at home. You need to be working in a venue or for a crewing company, or a lighting company, or a PA company, or helping a band. All of these things put you in the environment, put you into venues, seeing the people who do the work.” Like most people who work in this industry, for Matt it’s the love of live music that gets him out of bed in the mornings.
“We’ll expect all that to be set up by 2pm. Then the touring crew with the house guys would probably line check all the lines – by that I mean make sure that all the connections on stage work.
“We’ll probably look to soundcheck a headline band at around 4pm, probably ending sometime between 5pm and 6pm. Then between that time and when we open is probably where we have the most activity, because we have one or two support bands to bring in and we’ll do the same process that we’ve just done, but much more compressed and much faster. “Most headline acts will finish for about 11pm, stage cleared for about 12pm, truck loaded for about 1am, and lock the door for about 1.30am.” He adds: “I’m confident it’s going to go fine on every show I work. I’m also confident that if it doesn’t, then we’ll do something about it and I suppose that comes with experience. “On some of the larger shows, certainly you get some feeling of adrenaline - I think you should go home if you don’t!”
He says: “No one does this job if they don’t enjoy listening to great music. And you see some really great bands in a way that you wouldn’t get to see them if you were just going to gigs. “This year I really enjoyed The Marmozets – I think they’re probably one of the most exciting rock bands we’ve had. And Death from Above 1979, they’re a band I saw a decade ago in the Fleece and they were absolutely fantastic. And one of my favourite bands, Wolf People are playing in a couple of weeks time, so I’m really looking forward to that.” Finally, we asked Matt to run through a typical concert day for us: “The times are variable, but if we have a show here, we’ll be looking to come into work between 10am and midday. Most acts will arrive overnight, so they’ll travel from their previous show overnight and they’ll arrive some time in the early hours of the morning.
