Producer
Brought up on dubstep and grime, Bristol producer OH91 has managed to keep a relatively low profile over the past few years, whilst continuing to bring out a steady stream of bangers, from his Coyote Records-released Stealth, to his Skanks EP released on White Peach last year, and a slew of remixes, guestmixes and dubplates in between. It seems like now is the time for the producer, just back off a tour in Asia and with a solid Bristol showing over the past month, we’re ready and waiting to hear the next big thing from OH91. In the meantime, we asked him our 10 questions…
Breaks pioneers and certified scene veteran Krafty Kuts has been a major player in electronic music world since the late 90s, sharing stages with everyone from Rolling Stones to The Prodigy. He’s back with his third studio album All 4 Corners – a joint project with Bristol’s very own Reprazent frontman Dynamite MC. Released just last month, it’s another genreblending venture from Krafty, incorporating elements of grime, future-funk, hip hop and everything between, with features from the likes of Example, Harry Shotta, Chali 2na, and Rodney P. He comes to Bristol this month for a show with Dynamite MC at Bristol Volksfest. Upcoming shows... 10 June, Bristol Volksfest
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Think ahead, believe in yourself.
6. What’s your pet hate? Prawns... they should be illegal.
2. Favourite track of all time? Ermm... I would say Cam’ron feat Jeulz Santana – Oh Boy.
7. Favourite thing on TV? Would have to be a Netflix series called Orange is the New Black. Couple put me onto that.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Haha, what a question... I would say it would probably be a bashment tune or some Playboi Carti! Just depends on the mood that everyone’s in at the time.
8. Are you afraid of anything? I f****** hate moths!! I bought this new thing my mum told me about to put up, so come summer 17 I’m prepared!
4. Who are your top three acts right now? If you’re talking about DJs, I would say Grandmixxer, Spooky, Sir Spyro. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Probably something to do with computers! But initially, if I wasn’t doing music, I’d probably try and get a job in music industry.
9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... … 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Going to the big studio to mix down my next release, get it sounding FAT!
soundcloud.com/oh91 // fb.com/OH91Official // @OH91UK
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? That it’s nice to spend a day without my mobile phone (I left my phone at home). I got so much more done – a most productive day! 2. Favourite track of all time? Hmm that is so difficult, as I like so many styles, but if I gotta pick one it’s Nas - Nas Is Like. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Prodigy – Out Of Space. Always a winner, plus I have a few alternative versions, which makes it even more interesting. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Marten Hørger the German bass master is dropping some serious heavyweight bangers. Zeke Beats from Australia is unleashing some crazy hip hop-influenced monsters. Finally, Erb n Dub is destroying it with his next level DnB rippers! 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I’m extremely passionate about football and used to manage a team and play regularly, so I would love to get a coaching badge and teach young kids.
6. What’s your pet hate? Smoke filled rooms. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Hard choice between Gotham and Walking Dead but the WD just pips it – gripping stuff that freaks me out every episode! 8. Are you afraid of anything? Stairs – I have a fear of falling down them. Wasps and hornets – what purpose do they serve other than sting (little buggers)? Raw tomatoes… oh my, awful. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I was once a bingo caller in an amusement arcade, and one of my favourite past jobs was a trifle taster. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Heading out to San Francisco for a few shows in California, then onto Seattle.

K STYLZ
K Stylz aka Kamar Graham is the newest member of The Blast family. Although he’s been DJing for nigh on 15 years, shutting down raves in London and Birmingham, as well as making a name on the international club scenes in ‘Napa and Marbella, he’s now focusing all his energy on his hometown of Bristol. At only 27 years old, Kamar has achieved a lot in his DJ career – starting out very, very young. Although, as the nephew of Bristol house and garage veteran DJ Deli-G, you could say that music runs in his family. In that time, he’s been able to master several genres, settling now somewhere between house, garage and deep tech. ‘When I first started DJing I was playing hip hop and R&B, then when I met Blazey (Bodynod) I started doing garage and grime. Around 2006, I started doing UK funky, but with a deep tech and deep house sort of feel.
‘About a year and a half ago, I decided that I need to start producing. I’ve been in studios before, but there’s only so much you can learn from sitting there looking at them doing all the mad stuff! ‘I was on Facebook and I saw an ad for dBs music school. I was working full time at that point, but I decided then that if they did an evening course, I would do it. ‘Luckily, they did, and that’s where I learnt most of my production skills.
I don’t sing and I don’t rap, but I’ve always said if I start making my own tunes then I’ll vocal them myself
‘Although because of my uncle, I’ve always been around and loved house and garage. Over the past year and a half, I started merging garage, tech, bass and house within my sets.’
‘From there I joined their uni course and I’m now in my first year at dBs doing music production and sound engineering.
It was also around that time that Kamar first turned his hand to producing, with original mixes starting to appear on his Soundcloud and, more recently, in his live sets.
‘So I’ve not been producing for that long, but recently I’ve actually been able to start finishing tunes, mastering them, mixing them and getting them out there – and I’ve been
getting a good reaction from the tracks I’ve been putting out. ‘I literally just finished up a track today, which is a remix of the Cleptomaniacs tune All I Do, but because it’s a bootleg I can’t officially release it. If I get clearance on it I’ll release it, but if not I’ve got lots of other stuff lined up, which are fully my own vocals and everything. ‘I don’t sing and I don’t rap, but I’ve always said if I start making my own tunes then I’ll vocal them myself.’ It’s pretty clear that he’s not just playing around with producing, and after 15 years DJing, we’re about to witness his transmogrification into fully-fledged tune-maker. For a DJ with such varied taste in music – and one who isn’t interested in pigeon holing himself – we’re really excited to see what he comes out with. ‘By October, hopefully I can get an EP ready to actually put out as an official first release. ‘At the moment, as a fresh producer – and I listen to a lot of different music: hip hop, garage, grime, house, techno, reggae, bashment – I don’t want to pigeon hole myself but I have noticed that a lot of the stuff I’m making is garage and house influenced. ‘I think the main influences are from the era of 2012-2014,
LOCAL TALENT // 27
when I was listening to the deep house scene. Not the more fluffy stuff that you’d get at Defected raves – which I’d still listen to – but from when I used to go up to raves in Birmingham like Pandora, where they played the darker, deeper, bass stuff. ‘Some of it crosses over into bassline / garage – it’s still got all the vocals and melodies and fluffier stuff, because I like something I can sing along to, but also stuff that I can skank to. ‘So that’s what I’m trying to make – whether it’s garage, house or whatever, hopefully it’s something that I can play in the club. I’ve got a vision of the stuff that I want to make, but genre-wise I’m not pigeon holing myself.’
Although K-Stylz has been a major presence on the national and international scene for a long time, he’s flown relatively under the radar in Bristol until now. Locally, you can expect to see him at West Fest in October, South West Dance Festival in July with Garage Nation, and of course, this year’s Sequences Festival with The Blast. ‘I’m glad at the moment that I’m focusing more on Bristol,’ he says. ‘When they (The Blast) asked me to be part of it, it made me feel like I’d finally been accepted into the Bristol music scene. ‘The music family in Bristol is really close and everyone’s got their little section, and it can be quite cliquey at times, but being a part of The Blast means that the underground scene
has finally accepted me – because they’ve always known about me, they’ve always made me aware that they know I’m there, but for them to officially ask me to be part of The Blast means a lot.’ At Sequences, K-Stylz will play Motion’s Front Yard on a stage lineup working its way up to Chase and Status, including Sam Binga b2b Chimpo and Trigga, Elijah and Skilliam, Kojo Funds and Flava D. ‘I’ve been thinking about what kind of set I’m going to do at Sequences, because when I played the EZ event in December, I got there late and they were doing the whole back to back set and everyone was battering all the tunes, and I thought, what am I going to go in with? ‘I decided to just feed off what everyone else was playing and mix it up with the UK trap sort of stuff and grime, and see if I could mix in the new deep tech sound, because it all works around the 125-130bpm, and it went off – I was actually shocked at the reaction I got from the crowd.
By October, hopefully I can get an EP ready to actually put out as an official first release ‘So I’ve been working on that since then, building on it, and now people know that they’re getting a 4/4 sort of sound from me, regardless of whether it’s trap, grime, tech, house or whatever. But the crowd like it, so I’m building a set around that and hopefully it works. The rest of the people on the lineup are all from one of the genres in some sort of way, so it should work! ‘It’s about bringing the vibe, because I like the party vibe – I’m not going to lie, I’m a proper raver. ‘And I’ve got to say, hold tight my guys – Blazey, Fire Man Sam, K-Krush and The Blast – and shout out to the Bristol scene, because if it wasn’t for them and the ravers and all the supporters, I wouldn’t be here.’

THE KOOKS
What better way to kick off the month of May than a serious hit of indie nostalgia? Brighton boys The Kooks embarked on their Best Of tour, making a pit stop at Bristol’s very own Colston Hall. Support came from northern lads Clean Cut Kid, who have been making waves in the indie-rock scene with their bouncy guitar riffs and sweet sounding melodies. Championed by Courteeners frontman Liam Fray and gaining lots of airtime on BBC Radio 6, these guys were the perfect choice to support The Kooks. Judging by the insane reaction from the crowd, it’s safe to say that they agreed. Clean Cut Kid got the party well and truly started and by the time The Kooks came onto the stage, the tightly packed crowd was raring to go – the amount of energy that was bouncing around the room was close to something epic.
The Best Of tour is in support their forthcoming Best Of… So Far album, so unsurprisingly, the set list was a beautiful recipe of all their best hits. Nitelife spoke to Kooks bassist Pete Denton ahead of the show, who explained why this tour was different to any they’ve ever done before: ‘This tour is a party, do you know what I mean? The pressure is off and we’re playing killer tunes that we know the fans love. And we’re celebrating 10 years as a band. ‘We wanted to give something back to the fans,’ says Pete. ‘Not only is this tour for us but it’s for them too. Playing all the hits means that there will hopefully be loads of goodwill in the room. A fun and laid back atmosphere – something a bit different to what we are used to.’
REWIND // 29
Drawing the evening to a close was the largely anticipated track Naïve, the atmosphere shifted from solemn and sentimental to chaotic and claustrophobic in a matter of seconds. This party was not ready to end. The lyrics ‘I may say it was your fault / ‘Cause I know you could have done more / Oh, you’re so naive yet so’ belted through the venue so loudly that, for a second, I wasn’t sure if the construction of the old building would stand the vibrations and stomps that were attacking the venue at full force – and they say that indie is a dying scene.
the set list was a beautiful recipe of all their best hits Starting with crowd pleaser and mid-noughties classic She Moves In Her Own Way from their debut album Inside In/ Inside Out, the band went straight into the track with ease and grins on their faces – clearly happy to be there. The sweet sound of ‘But uh oh, she came to my show /Just to hear about my day’ repeated effortlessly back from the crowd was weirdly heart-warming and kick started the set perfectly. Frontman Luke Pritchard engaged with the audience by strutting to the front of the stage and singling out individuals by pointing to them when singing the tracks; promising the crowd that they’ll be playing all the bangers tonight. This guy seriously knows how to work a crowd, having had over 10 years to perfect that frontman charm.
Bad Habit and Shine On received the best reception of the night, so much so that if I wasn’t located next to a speaker I probably wouldn’t have heard the band over the screams of both younger and older individuals, who were going crazy for these old favourites. It wasn’t all old music however, and the band injected some spice into their set with a few new songs. ‘We kinda wanted to throw some recent material in there too, both to tease but also to test it out,’ Pete explains. The new tracks were Broken Vow and See Me Now, the latter of which has already been released. Although you could tell some of the audience were familiar with the lyrics, silence swept the room as a piano was rolled onto the stage. Pritchard takes centre stage with an acoustic of the ballad and dedicates it to his dad, and ‘anyone who’s lost someone’.
The lads said their thanks and exited the stage in a timely fashion, but that didn’t stop the crowd from singing and dancing until the stewards came to escort them out. No fear though, as the band will be touring again with their new material. Pete Denton tells Nitelife: ‘We’ve got a lot of festivals coming up like Sound City in Liverpool and Isle of White, but right now the record is priority; we’re hoping to get it finished by the end of summer’.

MAD PROFESSOR
Neil Fraser, AKA Mad Professor is a name we are all familiar with. Known for his Guyanese dub music production and remix work, Mad Professor is without a doubt one of the leading producers in the genre’s transition from analogue to dub. Mad Professor is known partly for his major collaborations with the likes of Jah Shaka, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Horace Andy and Pato Banton, alongside his original production of the Dub Me Crazy series.
We still have some old school habits here at Ariwa studios. We still like to record things on tape Nitelife caught up with the prestigious dub producer ahead of his Mad Professor’s Dub Club set at Fiesta Bombarda at Thekla this month, featuring the Lionpulse soundsystem and Hold Tight records. Mad Professor invited us to listen in whilst he sat in his Ariwa Sounds studio working on a new track with Brazilian flute player Chico. In between random spouts of Mad Professor whistling wacky hooks and shouting direction from beyond his sound desk, the pioneering professor gave us an insight into how he works. Coming from an electrician/technician background, Mad Professor has always been surrounded by electrical devices, and learned to tackle and re-build gadgets from a young age after he first came over to London in the early sixties. Not long after learning to work his magic behind a mixing desk, Ariwa Studios was born. ‘You know what? I just love music,’ he explains. ‘I decided to build my first studio in the 1970s because I wanted to sing, so I started recording myself. But then I had a listen and I realised I didn’t like my voice, so I decided I best stick to producing music instead. ‘I am totally self-taught. I came from an electronics/ technicians background, so I always used to play around with electronics, looking where the signal should and
shouldn’t go to. The whole thing developed from there. You are constantly learning new techniques as technology develops though.’ Over the years Mad Professor has worked with a huge selection of artists in both his collaborations and remixes, but most notably, living reggae legend and pioneer, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, who he continues to work with after almost 30 years. ‘When I started working with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, there was a lot that I thought I knew, but I had to re-learn it all. He has a certain way of working and I found that when I changed my technique, we worked so much better together. He’s not the kind of guy who will speak up and say when something sounds wrong, as such, but he will just say, “Nah man, this is how it should sound” – and you go from there. It’s a great way to learn and develop really. We continue to work with each other every now and again. We’ve got a couple of European tour dates coming up for June and July too.’ On top of working with some of reggae’s great pioneers, his eclectic list of collaborations include The Orb, Sade and Massive Attack, proving that this producer does not give himself any restrictions when it comes to choosing new artists to approach and work with. ‘I always like to look out for someone who is original with the sound they make. I like to look for artists who are really fresh and original, that’s the whole package I listen out for.’ During his musical career, Mad Professor has been at the forefront of the second generation wave of dub, whilst playing an instrumental part in the genre’s transition from analogue to digital production. The producer explores whether dub as a genre will progress as technology develops, or whether it will stay true to its authentic roots in sound: ‘Music is always influenced by technology. The thing about it is that we still have some old school habits here at Ariwa studios. We still like to record things on tape, which is a much longer process, but the end result makes it sound a little bit more full and really organic. ‘We aren’t personally influenced so much by the digital sound, although I like a lot of aspects of it. I still think some of the best music has been made on 16 track and we still
have a couple of analogue machines in the studio too. I really love and respect that era. Digital is still ok though, especially if you are on a budget.’
When I started working with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, there was a lot that I thought I knew, but I had to re-learn it all Not only has the change in technology affected the way we listen music, but Mad Professor reflects on how a change in the way we access new sounds has influenced our relationship with music – ‘Everything is so much easier to find and listen to now – just a click of a button away. It’s not necessarily a bad thing as such, there is just so much music to choose from.’ As we wrap up and talk about his upcoming set at Thekla this June, Mad Professor explains what he thinks makes for a good show. ‘The atmosphere of the venue is very important. The sound equipment is also very important. Also, a nice interaction between the artist and the crowd.’ Luckily, the Fiesta Bombarda crew are as well known for their immersive décor and carnival party vibes as their very special lineups, so atmosphere is not likely to be a problem. We highly recommend grabbing a ticket to witness this rare Bristol and undoubtedly memorable Dub Club performance from the Professor. Plus, keep an ear out for new material from the leading dub pioneer, with a release featuring General Levy that’s expected to surface later this year.

HACIENDA CLASSICAL AT BRISTOL SOUNDS
Manchester’s Hacienda Classical project is descending on Bristol’s Harbourside this month – with a full 40-piece orchestra in tow – as part of the Bristol Sounds concerts between 21-24 June. An ode to the iconic Hacienda nightclub in Manchester, their classical arrangements of 80s and 90s club hits like You’ve Got the Love and Ride on Time have achieved dizzying heights of acclaim, including an invitation to open the Pyramid Stage on Friday at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. Hacienda Classical is a project from M People’s Tim Pickering and veteran club DJ Graeme Park, who were both resident DJs at the Hacienda in its heyday; overseen by the club’s co-founder, Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook.
Classical music wrongly has this reputation of being very highbrow and this is a way of telling people it needn’t be – it’s music, it’s live performance Instrumental brawn comes from the fantastic Manchester Camerata Orchestra, who were recently named Best Ensemble at the Royal Philharmonic Society (RPS) Music Awards last month. The whole cohort are bringing their show to Lloyd’s
Amphitheatre on 24 June, so we called up Graeme Park to find out a bit more about the project’s beginnings. ‘Acid house and early house tracks weren’t ever performed live – which was quite revolutionary at the time, because up until the rise of dance music, people would make a record and then go out and perform that record in order to sell singles. ‘But with a lot of dance music, and certainly the early house stuff, it was made in Chicago and Detroit in very basic studios and then released. Then the people who released them would stay in the studio and work on some other stuff. Occasionally, if a track had a great vocal and it took off in the clubs, then that vocal would be performed live. ‘Tim and I were discussing how it would be great to actually perform these tracks live, but we said if we were going to do it, we needed to do it in a way that no one else had. ‘Electronic musicians have performed with orchestras before – Derrick May has and Carl Craig has – but nobody had done it to the extent of a fully-produced, two-hour show that went on tour. ‘We were kind of joking about it and then Peter Hook, who was one of the original Hacienda directors, rang us up and said we should do it, and if we are going to do it, we need to do it with the Manchester Camerata Orchestra. ‘We met up for the first time in August 2015 and by the end of September, we had three or four shows in the diary for early 2016. It all turned out better than we even imagined.’ Since then, they’ve sold out Albert Hall, had a 20-track album released on Sony Classical and won fans spanning
generations – new and old. Proving that this is more than a well-timed gimmick, despite the massive success of their original show, they’ve come up with an almost entirely new setlist for 2017. ‘We’ve kept three or four tracks from the original show, because they’re iconic tracks, but we dropped some that people were surprised about. But we’ve dropped them because there are other tracks that are as good, if not better. We’ve done two shows so far this year in Leeds and Glasgow, and the response has been phenomenal.’ Listening to their original show, every song seems like a clear-cut choice for the project. However, as DJs of one of the most iconic clubs of the era, they’re drawing from a musical goldmine, which can make cutting their setlist down to just 20 songs a difficult task. ‘Last year choosing the setlist was easier, because Mike and I both came up with a list of 20 songs that we each thought should be in there, and 10 of those songs on our lists were the same, so then it was just a heated debate about what the other ten songs should be. This year was much harder, because Mike and I came up with lists with very few similarities…’ Unfortunately, Graeme is keeping tight-lipped about those lists, so and we’ll have to wait until their live show in Bristol to find out which tracks made the final cut. On why they went down the orchestra route, instead of doing something more like Roni Size’s Reprazent, Graeme explains: ‘Mike was in M People for years and has experience of playing with string sections, and before I was a DJ I played saxophone in bands and clarinet in the school orchestra. Also my late grandfather had his own big band in the 50s
PREVIEW // 33 and 60s, so performing with a live orchestra was not a strange thing to do at all – it felt perfectly natural and I felt completely at home on the stage with the musicians. Although this time I’ve got a keyboard, a sampler and two turntables. ‘The thing that was difficult is that the orchestra is used to having a score and playing the same music every show, but Mike and I wanted to keep that DJ spontaneity there. ‘As a DJ you have a rough idea of what you’re going to do, but the audience and the atmosphere and the venue and the vibe can often make you think of things you haven’t thought of and do things you weren’t planning on doing, so it was important to us to be able to keep that spontaneity in the classical show. ‘So although I’m following the scores and performing, if I suddenly think: “I’m going to try this acapella, or I’m going to try this sound,” then we’ve got the freedom to do it. If it works, we make a note and do it again, and if it doesn’t work – as long as nobody’s pulling a face – we’ll just move on and not do it again. ‘Last year, we stuck faithfully to the original arrangements and the original vibe of every track. But this year, we decided to have some fun with it. So you’ll hear things that are not part of the original tracks. There’s stuff that Tim (Manchester Camerata’s conductor) has written that’s totally unique to our show. ‘Also, instead of doing the original version of a song – the version that everyone knows – we’ve done a couple of alternative versions that people won’t recognise until the vocal comes in. Suddenly, the vocalist will start the first line of the song and the whole place erupts, which is amazing.’ Reflecting on why the Hacienda Classical concept has been so successful, both in the classical circuit and far beyond, Graeme says: ‘It’s introducing the concept of live classical music to a whole new audience. A lot of the people who come and see Haceinda Classical will never in their lives have seen any form of classical music whatsoever, so from that point of view it’s very exciting. ‘The other thing that’s exciting is that some of the older orchestra members used to go to Hacienda! They were secret ravers back in the day. And while being a raver would have been frowned upon in classical circles then, now they get to come forward and say, “I used to go to Hacienda and I know these songs!” ‘Classical music wrongly has this reputation of being very highbrow and this is a way of telling people it needn’t be – it’s music, it’s live performance.
People can come along and hear these songs that they grew up to, songs they fell in love to, songs that had a lasting impression on them ‘People can come along and hear these songs that they grew up to, songs they fell in love to, songs that had a lasting impression on them in their late teens and their twenties – it takes them right back to the 80s and 90s – it’s hands in the air, people dancing… ‘At a classical concert, I suppose people would have a couple of drinks, but at Hacienda Classical people are trying to recreate their youth a little bit, so there’s a lot of indulgence going on, shall we say.’ Talking about the Bristol show, Graeme is all too happy to confirm a few special guests for the night: ‘Rowetta is back for another few tracks, Yvonne Shelton is back, and there’s a girl called Rae who’s had a few brilliant singles out in the last few years, who we thought was a great fit. ‘She’s too young to have gone to Hacienda, but when we met her we could tell she would have been a Hacienda regular back in the day! Peter Hook is also singing a couple of songs and plays bass – it’s all very exciting. ‘I’m really looking forward to playing Bristol. As a DJ, I’ve been playing in Bristol since the late 80s and it’s a great city. It’s got its own place on the British club culture map, and I’m pretty sure the Bristol crowd are going to be well up for it!’

34 // THE INFLUENCERS
THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH
LEON PATTRICK Leon Pattrick Age: Occupation:
24 Co-founder of Noods Radio
Leon Pattrick is one of two minds behind Noods Radio, which he set up with friend and business partner Jack Machin in 2015, after pitching the idea to an enthusiastic friend in the queue for a toboggan run at Bestival. This was the confirmation they needed to take their Sunday living room sessions online… ‘It all started with us sitting about on Sundays after going out all weekend and sharing music with one another in the living room,’ says Leon. ‘Usually carrying on with a couple of cans from the night before. ‘But then we watched Boiler Room’s Ringgo’s Breakfasts, where he’s just in his living room with guests, playing records or music off their computers. We’d been wanting to do something for a while, but after seeing that we realised we could do it – without needing a lot of gear or anything.’
‘FM is not something we’re looking into at the moment, we’re enjoying the online station right now. It would be nice to get in a cab or something and put it on, but at the moment we don’t have that sort of financial backing behind us. ‘10 Twenty Radio we have a good relationship with – they come to our nights and we go to theirs. We support one another and share some residents, so there’s no animosity. ‘I guess there’s some competition, but I think that’s good to have, because it gets the best out of both of us and means we push to grow rather than just settling. There’s different personalities to each station as well, so I guess we cover different pockets.’ When it comes down to the nitty gritty of what running a radio station entails, Leon explains: ‘It’s a lot of communication. Jack’s travelling at the moment, so it’s just me, and we’ve got over 100 residents – so I get messaged a fair few times each day. ‘I try to not do too much on the weekends, because Monday to Friday I just stare at a screen and my eyes feel like they’re going square.
Although Leon has a background education in music, studying first at music college in his hometown of Isle of Wight and then coming to the South West to study Commercial Music at Bath Spa, he says that setting up and running Noods has been more a case of learning on the job.
‘The music we play on Noods is a reflection of our experience of being in Bristol – what we’ve been exposed to and we’ve liked. There is a lot of different stuff in Bristol – and we like a lot of different stuff.’
‘I wouldn’t say I was a DJ before I started, but I play a little bit now – not too much though, I wouldn’t say I’m the most confident DJ. And a lot of our DJs are better than me, so I’d rather just let them get on with it!’
‘I’d say just do it. Don’t think about it too much, just do it and get a feel for it. See if it’s something you really want to do because if it grows, it’s going to be a lot more work but if people are into it, they’ll help you out.
From their weekly pilot shows back in 2015, they’ve grown to a family of over 100 residents with daily programming. We asked Leon how they vet the people they let loose on their airwaves: ‘We always ask for a mix with a bit of chat – because it is radio, it’s not a mix series. Getting to know people’s personality is very important. And then obviously we listen to their music, which is the main thing – people can always get better at the chat side.
‘We started streaming through a free website called Chew, but everyone’s using Facebook live now, so you can just do that to get a feel for it. When we started, we didn’t even have decks. We were just running it through audio software and dragging and dropping tunes in live and processing live.’
‘We also try and make sure it’s something a bit different to everything else that’s on there, because we don’t want to have just one sound. So we’ll try and keep the programming varied – certain days might share certain traits, but it switches up.’
‘We haven’t had any contact with the people who run SWU, but we support what they’re doing – it would be wicked to have something more underground on FM.
‘A lot of it is learning on the job – especially the events side of things,’ Leon says. ‘Being on the other side of the stage at an event that is electronic based – I’d always done band-based stuff – that was in the deep end. At the start, we were borrowing equipment that we weren’t really sure how to even set up.
Having seen his own notion grow into a reality, Leon would tell other people with an idea to give it a go. He also warns people starting out to be wary of investing lots of money at the beginning, as in a lot of cases there’s simply no need.
‘Doing those courses kind of set me up, but it was more so just knowing people. A lot of the Noods stuff came about through meeting people from going out in Bristol.
When you’re playing on radio there’s room to experiment a bit more
The music we play on Noods is a reflection of our experience of being in Bristol
He continues: ‘Playing music out can translate onto radio, but at the same time, when you’re playing on radio there’s room to experiment a bit more. Especially for club or dance DJs that listen to lots of other sorts of music – it’s a platform that gives them a chance to share things from their bag that they wouldn’t normally be able to play out.’
‘My background is playing in bands. I’m from the Isle of Wight and back there the scene is very much bands. I played in funk bands, then punk bands when I went to uni.
As one of only a handful of successful online radio stations in the city – probably one of the only areas where Bristol lags behind London – we were interested to hear how Leon felt about Bristol’s other underground stations.
As well as becoming one of Bristol’s favourite underground stations, Noods has also become a major part of Bristol’s nightlife scene, with regular nights at their unofficial Surrey Vaults home, and more recently getting involved with residents’ sets at major events like Love Saves the Day.
‘I usually wake up and before I eat breakfast – which is a bad habit – check my emails, go through a load of those, then go on Facebook to go through messages – which is why it’s bad because you can get caught up in that rather than going and eating! ‘Then it’s sorting out images for people’s shows, sorting out the audio, uploading stuff to servers – that’ll be most of the daytime. Then at night, social media stuff and just listening in to the shows and making sure everything sounds good, and calling up if anything’s going wrong. ‘I run down to the studio a lot! Make sure it’s all tidy or go through all the audio and make sure it’s trimmed properly, stuff like that. Check all the connections, test all the equipment…’
Finishing up our chat, Leon reflects: ‘When I graduated, I wanted to make something that would keep everyone together – more like an artist collective or community – so I guess in a way, Noods became that, which is nice. It’s a lot of friends under one umbrella.’ Tune in Noods Radio daily, or pop into their next event on 12 June at Jam Jar Bristol, with special guests Glasgow’s 12th Isle.
