Bill Brewster began DJing in the 1980s, but came into his own in the early 1990s, particularly during a two-year stint in New York running DMC’s office. Bill was also one of the founding residents at Fabric in London, a position he held for five years. There are few still playing regularly today that have his dedication, eclecticism and encyclopaedic knowledge of music.

New wave, alt hip hop group The Scribes have been getting crowds bouncing all over the country with the launch of their second album, ‘A Story All About How’ at the beginning of this year. The Scribes are: Shaun Amos (aka Ill Literate), Jonny Steele and Paul Lacey. In 2013, the group signed to respected hip hop label Kamikazi Airline Records, their first UK signing no less, and already they have been sharing stages with the mighty MF Doom, Wu Tang, De La Soul and last month, Coolio “He was alright, weren’t he? Came back stage rocking a wrestling mask, nicked my whiskey out of my hand,” says midlands-born beatboxer, Lacey. Their big break came around after the group toured with Ugly Duckling, Shaun explains. “We toured with them a few times and Kamikazi Airlines in co-owned by one of the guys from Ugly Duckling. “He had talked about the label a few times and eventually brought the other guys from the label to come and see us and they didn’t hate what they saw.” “Shaun really impressed him. Shaun impressed him the hard way,” says Lacey. “It was nothing like that. It was just my pure oral talent,” Shaun jokes. Although Kamikazi Airlines have expressed interest in an American tour, fortunately, we don’t look set to lose the boys to the US label any time soon. “This year we’ve got the new album out and the main thing is the UK tour and a few bits of Europe. So the US will have to wait.”

The Scribes’ sound is clearly grounded in hip hop, but it’s a sound quite unlike anything out there at the moment.

“You walk down to the studio and he’d be there with a little washboard,” Lacey says.

“It’s a bit of everything,” says Jonny.

It’s clear that the group have come together out of friendship, as well as shared musical talent. Jonny and Shaun went to primary school together in Bristol at Sefton Park, and Shaun met Lacey while at university in Plymouth.

“We’ve all got different influences, ” Lacey explains. (He points to Shaun) Blur. (points to Jonny) Hip hop. (points to Shaun) Blur. (points to himself) More hip hop. (points back to Shaun) Damon Albarn, I love you.” “I listen to more than just Damon Albarn!” Along with the hip hop beats, there is a heavy electronic influence, and at times they almost break into rock music. Shaun laughs, “That’s the Blur influence I guess! “I like seeing on how we’re described on websites. A German website described us as electro rap. I think that’s not bad. But it makes it sound a bit like we’re going to stand in front of a keyboard. I think you’ve probably got to hear it for yourself.” Recently their sound has moved away from sample-based hip hop and made the voyage into instrumental territory. “There is a limit to what you can do with samples,” says Shaun. “And I think we hit that limit quite soon on the first record. And the second record is a mixture of some sample stuff and some more musical stuff. And the new one is very much musical stuff. “I think it gives you the freedom to progress a song a lot more, because you’re not stuck with a sample and whatever that person’s already done to try and tie in with it. Because it’s us playing guitar, us playing the keys, we can take it wherever we want.” Lacey agrees, “Obviously we love sample based hip hop, but I think the beauty of the album is that it’s actually very creative. Shows off your musical flare, doesn’t it Shaun? You play a few instruments.” “Thank you! I do, yeah. Towards the end it just became let’s get every instrument I can learn to play on there.”

Along the way they’ve collaborated with a number of musicians, but the core group has remained the same. “Who’s that band that keeps killing their drummer?” asks Shaun. “Spinal Tap! We’re like Spinal Tap but with DJs. Us three are a constant, but the DJs we just keep switching up. They get squashed by miniature Stonehenges and things.” While two thirds of the group is living currently in Plymouth, musically they are still Bristol based. “I love Plymouth to bits,” says Shaun. “I bought a house there with my missus, I like living there, but Bristol is definitely more supportive of hip hop.” “Over the last few years, UK hip hop has had quite a resurgence in Bristol. We’ve gone from playing places like Golden Lion to much bigger venues,” Jonny tells us. “There have been a lot of promoters getting really involved as well, bringing the American hip hop artists down. Bristol has been brilliant.” Jonny continues, “There are so many different types of hip hop going on here as well, so you’ve got boom bap, or you’ve got live band hip hop. When you go to festivals, there will always be lots of UK artists or people that do different types of hip hop, whether it’s ska infused or reggae, but either way you’ll always find a load of Bristol artist playing.” “Yeah, Boomtown was like... Bristol!” says Shaun. We ask the boys about their new album, which launched at The Fleece end of January with golden era legends Slimkid3

(Pharcyde MC) and DJ Nu-Mark (Jurassic 5 DJ/producer). “I don’t think it sounds like a lot else that’s out there,” says Shaun. “We’re chuffed to bits with it really. I’m really happy with it.” “There’s a lot of work that’s gone into and I think it encompasses a lot of what we’ve been trying to achieve for the last few years. The main thing really, is that it’s a teaser for our live show,” Jonny tells us Watching the band live is a must. The group won Best Live Act 2012 (Eat Music Radio) and Best Urban Act 2011 (Exposure Music Awards). Their personalities truly come through on stage, bouncing off each other’s energy and the crowd. Shaun has an impressive trick where he asks the audience to hold up random items from their pockets, betting he can rap about anything they hold up. You can pretty much guarantee they’ll run out of items before he’ll run out of rhymes. We ask him how he does it: “Genius, is a strong word… I don’t know. Lots of practice! The more you rap, the more you write raps, the more you realise how wide the range of words that rhyme are. It doesn’t have to be as precise as being a full rhyme; it can be something that has the same rhythm to it, or the same kind of harsh sibilance. “Much harder than thinking of words that rhyme with something is thinking of ways it ties in so it’s relevant. “I guess just lot’s of practice. It’s still pretty fucking magic though!”

REWIND // BEST OF LAST MONTH

Gentleman’s Dub Club

They might be Gentleman by name and gentleman by nature, but one thing’s for sure, Gentleman’s Dub Club are passionate when it comes to putting on a performance that you’ll definitely not forget in a hurry. Starting out in 2009 in a basement of a house situated amongst the student hub Hyde Park in Leeds, the nine piece band have since become one of the most recognisable ‘go-to’ bands if you want to witness some of the best live dub, reggae and ska infused music. Drawing inspiration from their passion for their favourite genres and local surroundings, GDC have managed to take their sound beyond Leeds, to cities and festivals all over the UK and across Europe including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and the bass heavy Outlook Festival in Croatia. Six years later, after having three successful EP and album releases, the salute by top BBC Radio presenters Huw Stephens, Rob Da Bank, David Rodigan and Don Letts and taking over the UK and Europe with their live shows, GDC can hold their heads high in the knowledge that they are rightfully one of the best live dub bands in the UK. Bristol were lucky enough to have Gentleman’s Dub Club reach Motion this February. The show was originally set to take place at The Marble Factory, but a huge demand for tickets forced organisers to move the show to its bigger sister next door. Dub lovers were blessed with an energetic performance that hyped the crowd into a frenzy straight from the word go. Starting with drummers Tommy Evans and Niall Lavelle drumming a beat of suspense, the crowd were already shuffling to the sound anticipating the explosion that was about to kick off. Just as the percussion reached its peak, the rest of the band including vocalist Johnny Scratchley, keys player Kola Bello, guitarist Nick Tyson, sax player Kieran Gallagher and trumpet player Matt Roberts and synth player Toby Davies came bouncing onto the stage all suited and booted, jumping straight into the stomping heavy Emergency, where not one member of the crowds feet stayed firmly on the floor. GDC continued to keep the crowds levels hyped throughout the night, dropping a whole load of energy from their 2013

FOURtyFour, Members Only and Open Your Eyes EP, along with an introduction to a few new songs from their up and coming release The Big Smoke. One thing’s for sure, GDC know how to deliver a weight load of bass in their live shows. At one point of the night, vocalist Johnny joined the crowd in captivating the heavy music by climbing forward to a front stack, simultaneously hyping the crowd whilst facing the speaker and absorbing the bass head to toe. By the end of the night, the crowd were wiped from an hour of continuous dancing, but still held on chanting for more. It was a definite given that Gentleman’s Dub Club had shown Bristol how it’s done. Nitelife Magazine caught up with percussionist Niall, vocalist Johnny and bass and Synth player Toby after their sound check before the big night to find out a bit more about the men behind the suits. First of all, how did you guys first meet? Toby: Oh that old chestnut. Johnny: We were all in prison together. (Laughter) Toby: We were all in the same block. Niall: We made a tunnel and started tunnelling out together. Johnny: That’s it, and when we did we came right out into a rave. So we crawled out and went inside that and that’s where Iration Steppas were playing. And was this ‘rave’ the famous SubDub in Leeds by any chance? Johnny: It sure was. We were students at University of Leeds and we came together by a mutual love of Dub. For people who haven’t heard of you before, how would you best describe your sound? Toby: Dub, Reggae and Ska really.

load of artist there that I think helped inspire us. Where did the name Gentleman’s Dub Club actually come from? Niall: Toby’s mind. Toby: Yeah I pretty much just spurted it out one evening and that’s about it really. Niall: There was another suggestion in mix… Toby: Yeah, Doctor Voodoo and the Kick-ass Five! You use the word dub in your band name- have you found this restricts you to the kind of music you want to create? Johnny: Well ‘dub’ can be taken in a few different ways, so it can be an approach towards music as well as the name of a genre. It sort of means taking a recorded track, breaking it down into its single elements, and then giving it that little bit extra, like putting on a big reverb or layers and kind throwing a kind of psychedelic wash to it all. You can take that approach to a lot of different types of music and it has been done for years. So really, we’ve got a lot of freedom as a result of that. By nature it is open, so not at all. It’s completely un-restricted. You must rack up a huge dry cleaning bill wearing suits for every gig? What’s that all about? Toby: Everyone looked so shit at the start, it looked like we were literally dragged out of a hedge, so that’s why we wear suits. To unite everyone. Johnny: At one point we thought of doing different coloured t shirts. We had some kind of African suits as well. Toby: Yeah we had that whole phase. It sounds like you should start to perform dressing up in different themes. Johnny: Yeah we have thought about that actually. We’d like to do a Cricket one.

Niall: It was Iration Steppas and going and listening to them that made us want to try and re-create that sound.

Toby: We’d like to do tweed as well. These are just some of the goals we put down.

NItelife Bristol You tour a lot across the UK and Europe. What’s the best story to come out of a tour? Toby: We got the van stuck in a cul-de-sac in the middle of a forest once. We had to be on stage in forty minutes and so all of us were just trying to push the van on the way to Plymouth. But we managed to make it on time. Niall: That’s not really a funny or amusing story really though is it… Johnny: Here’s a good one. Our trumpet player Matt on the way back from one of our shows popped on a pair of Jack Wills Y-fronts and went into the service station where he met a crew on a stag-do, and they stripped him down to nothing. Niall: There’s a picture of that somewhere. Toby: He also does this thing called the ‘Gazelle’ which happens when we’re leaving a festival. He’ll get completely naked and do a circuit of the festival we were playing at and then jump back in the car! Dead or alive, who would you like to collaborate with? Niall: Iration Steppas would be great. Toby: King Tubby, and Shakespeare for the lyrics. Back in 2012, Scotland based Mungo’s Hi Fi released a bassheavy reshuffle of your 2011 High Grade. What other tracks of yours would you like to hear remixed? Toby: Probably one of the ones from our new album actually. There’s one called Music is a Girl I Love which would be wicked if it was remixed by someone like Prince Fatty. We are doing one with Flowdan as well, so it would be cool to get a Bug remix of that. That would be heavy. Johnny: It would be nice to get Scientist on a little reshuffle as well because the thing about Dub is that you can get a load of different producers doing different versions. Vibronics has done a few versions of ours as well. Have you ever considered chucking a female musician into the mix, or is this a strict ‘boys club’ only? Johnny: It’s difficult really, of course would love to, but we can’t really get away from the name… Toby: Nah, I think it would be fine if we did! Niall: In fact Matt has talked about working with the trumpet player Laura Jurd before. Toby: Actually, we’re doing a show at the Forum in London and we were thinking about getting some backing vocalists in for that. You mentioned in a previous interview about how certain genres of music get a ‘retro revival’. Would you like that to happen to the music you create, or are you happy with the way things are? Niall: I think we’ve been waiting about ten years for this to happen. (Laughter) Toby: Of course we would absolutely love it. The more popular it gets the more people get to appreciate it. Johnny: It’s interesting though, because reggae music is one thing but at the heart of it you’ve got a sound system culture and that wouldn’t really work on small speakers in cars and things anyway. The music has been designed for big sound systems and that is where it’s best enjoyed. If you go and listen to music on your hi-fi speakers then it probably wouldn’t translate that well. That in a way is quite nice because it remains consistent to its roots and its original message. In your opinion, how does the Bristol music scene compare to other cities? Toby: Bristol kind of reminds me of Leeds, but I think Leeds has now moved a little further towards house music and bass music and stuff. Johnny: The nice thing about Bristol is that it isn’t just a transient student culture, it’s like people actually live here and listen to different types of music and stay relevant. The roots of Bristol are also very bass heavy with drum n bass, dub and reggae. You’ve supported some huge names including Roots Manuva, The Wailers and The Streets. Who has been your favourite to support? Niall: We’ve supported Jimmy Cliff a couple of times and both times were amazing. Johnny: U-Roy was pretty good as well. And finally, what is in the pipeline for the band this year? Toby: We are working on our next album called The Big Smoke which is nearly done. It just needs a bit of tweaking but we will probably release that in the early summer. The album before called FOURtyfour was about Leeds and the history of us playing there and how we found our sound. I guess this album is about living in the big city London. It’s not a concept album but we will definitely be bringing in elements of the city that we now live in.

The Fleece, Mothers’ Ruin and Stag and Hounds have teamed up to bring you Ping Island: A series of free live music events in Bristol. This month’s offering comes in the form of Yorkshire five-piece, Allusondrugs. Their “full frontal grunge fuckery” (NME) has been garnering favour with the likes of Kerrang!, NME and Q Magazine. The band spent February touring with electronicore giants Enter Shikari and now they come to you – free – at The Stag and Hounds. Expect a neat blurring of rock music, psychedelia, shoegaze and grunge. We had a chance to ask guitarist Drey Pavlovic a few questions… For the past few years there has been a small flurry of grungerevival bands almost breaking through. Is this the year grunge makes a proper comeback? I’m not sure to be honest but that would be pretty cool. You received a lot of attention after Kerrang! premiered your zero-budget, DIY video for ‘Nervous’ last year. Can you tell us how that all came about? We played a show with Press To Meco at The Worlds End in London. At the show we met a very sexy gentleman who works for Kerrang! - he enjoyed our music and we enjoyed having our video premiered on Kerrang! You’re also coming to Bristol next month as part of a new series of free music events. Is there something honorable about detaching money from music?

It’s good to give a little something for free from time to time especially if it’s going to help people to come out to more shows to see some live music and have a good time. Not everything needs to be one directional. Is there a time when you’ve thought, “Shit, we’re a proper band now”? I guess it’s just been getting on to the bigger shows. There was a jacuzzi bathtub in our dressing room the other night - that was pretty mental!

You’ve been described as ‘not just another Yorkshire band’ – has it been hard to shake the enormous shadow of northern alt-boyband types like Pulp, and Arctic Monkeys? That’s hard to say because those bands have been around for years and are all a lot bigger than we are. Making your mark takes time and hard work and we’re prepared to put that all in for whatever we get in return. Can you give us a few words about your debut EP? We recorded it live to analogue tape at Greenmount Studios

in Armley. We had a really fun week making it and we are fairly happy with the results. There’s a documentary about it all on our YouTube channel (youtube.com/allusondrugs). How has it felt to get such an incredible reception from giants like NME, Kerrang! and Q Magazine? Really cool to be honest. It’s always nice to end up in the bigger publications somehow. It gives us a rough idea of the kind of reach we’re getting. How did you guys come together? We’ve been aware of each other as friends for ages but a mutual love for good music brought us all together. Some of us have been in bands with each other before too. Influences? Family, Friend, Life, Food, Music, Smokes, Drinks, Sleeps. What’s next for Allusondrugs in 2015? More shows, more releases, more hair. See you there.

Dazee has been flying the Bristol flag for Jungle and DnB since 1992 and is co- founder of the now legendary ‘Ruffneck Ting’ party and record label, alongside Markee Substance (Kosheen).

Kassia Zermon aka Bunty is a unique force best known for pioneering underground experimental vocal loop shows and fronting UK leading Dub act Resonators. Bunty’s distinctive voice has been championed by likes of Rodigan, Mark Lamar and BBC 6 tastemakers Tom Robinson and Lauren Laverne. Hard to fit into any box this lady’s influences are huge, bringing her Morrocan Londoner roots to create her own blend of raw avant – pop music. Bunty’s powerful avant- pop orchestra has been compared to FKA Twiggs and Tune-Yards. Combining the rawness of early M.I.A with the lyrical espionage of Tom Waits and a voice that can sound as sweet as Ella Fitzgerald (on Acid)

As well as making a name for herself with her DJ skills, she has had many successful releases; labels include Ruffneck Ting, Breakbeat Culture, Siren Records and Universal. Dazee has performed at some of the most celebrated raves and jungle parties (and featured in the tape packs!) including Universe, Dreamscape, Helter Skelter, World Dance and more recently, Raveology , Slamming Vinyl and Fantazia. Her pioneering DnB sound has taken her around the globe and she has featured on Radio 1, BBC 1Xtra, VH1 and ITV. Dazee is also a member of Bristol’s Dutty Girl collective and currently co-hosts The Dutty Bass show on Ujima Radio, alongside her fellow ‘Dutties’. As a member of Dutty Girl, Dazee is diversifying her sound to include a variety of bass heavy dance genres. Although she enjoys a more eclectic musical direction as part of Dutty Girl, Dazee will always remain true to her roots and champion jungle and drum and bass in her solo DJ sets. Dazee is also currently resident at Bristol’s monthly drum and bass night ‘Bristol Sounds’.

She has performed her boundlessly creative live shows at all the main UK festivals including Glastonbury, Bestival and Secret Garden. Bunty has supported an eclectic mix of acts including Jamie Woon, Scroobius Pip, Kate Tempest and Susheela Raman. She has collaborated with worldclass beatboxers Dub FX, Shlomo and Beardy Man and some of UK’s top vocal improvisers such as Maggie Nichols. Live, Bunty uses her synths, toys, ukulele, voice, effects pedals and a mash of real and made-up languages. She whispers, bellows, beatboxes, claps and stamps producing impressive vocal harmonies for her hook heavy tunes. Each show is different with a large portion of her sets relying on improvisation and off-the-cuff inspiration. Bunty flits deftly from beautifully serene choral soundscapes and psyche folk to stomping funkadelia and Arabian disco. She brings her epic audio visual feast to Trinity Centre this month – not to be missed!

Worst chart song at the moment? Embarrassingly (call myself a DJ!!) I have no idea what’s in the charts at the moment (apart from the Juno dnb download charts)! But I teach school children to DJ for their own school discos so have quite a few “Now! That’s What I Call Music” playlists. Don’t tell anyone. Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? 1. Ruffneck Ting producers: Jinx, K Jah, Vytol, The Force, Habitat, Range and Kable, Saxxon (does that count as a sneaky 1?), plus Serum and Bladerunner. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? I always wanted to be a vet as a kid but that never worked out as I did Art at Uni. Currently I also work as “artist in residence” in a school and youth music tutor to help feed my hungry label.

ZEINA RAAD

“With painting the side of The Blue Mountain, it was just something a bit different and a way to be a bit more independent and not go down that corporate road of having a billboard advert with JCDecaux or Primesight, and keep it in the Bristol style.

Just talking to Zeina about Love Saves the Day and her other projects, it’s obvious how much she enjoys her work. She tells us she was lucky to know what she wanted to do from a young age, which meant she could start working towards it very early on.

“Over the years we’ve developed quite a strong ticketing and promotional network and I’ve really enjoyed reading the little articles people write about the people who go to Motion or who are involved in Motion in some capacity.”

“I used to hang around with some people who were a little bit older than me where I’m from on Stoke-on-Trent and they all used to go and do some seasons in Ibiza. I went to do my first season in 2000 and I went to Space. It was Sasha’s birthday and it was just Sasha and John Digweed b2b on the terrace. I was in there with all the new friends I had made, who are now my main crew of friends and have been for the last fifteen years, and I just thought ‘I want to be a part of this’.

For instance, The University Paper: Bristol describes the ‘Motioner’ – a person ‘who is probably cooler than you’ and can be found hanging out at the ‘hedonistic temple of edginess’ that is Motion. “It’s a bit skins-esqu how they describe us and our fraternity,” says Zeina. “But it’s something we’ve been nurturing for a long time and I think it’s a cool thing in the city. And I think people who want to be involved with events in a promotional capacity or a more production, on-site events capacity, this is really the starting point or the foot in the door. “They join the promotion team to do some kind of flyering in exchange for some guestlist or festival tickets and get to make contact with the people who work in other areas of the organisation, and from there I guess it’s kind of an entry point - joining my team and then going off to do other bits and bobs if they want to be involved in the events industry.” But on a typical day, Zeina tells us, her job can be less than glamorous “A normal day when the festival (LSTD) is on I would have had maybe 3 or 4 hours sleep because I would have been helping with the on-site advertising, like cutting out boards, or erecting them on the heras fencing, or on the steelshield, or helping the guys with all the artist liaisons - so putting together all the programs and prepping all the riders.

“I do all the food shopping for all the artists, so it’s me that goes and spends two grand in Tesco’s with six trolleys worth of stuff - I actually really enjoy doing that!

“I’m just basically running around the night before doing a load of things that don’t actually have anything to do with me.

Job title: Marketing manager and accounts for Love Saves the Day festival Favourite thing about your job? To see people enjoying themselves in the event that I’ve worked on and contributed to, it’s just massive job satisfaction. It’s why I do what I do. When I see everyone buzzing and happy inside the event it makes me happy. That’s why I’m out till 8 o’clock in the morning flyering outside clubs when everyone’s telling me to fuck off and throwing flyers back in my face. Or why I’m zooming all around the country doing deliveries or checking bits and bobs. Seeing people’s reactions and seeing that look on everyone’s faces makes it all worth it.

“At peak times I have between 40 to 100 CVs sent to me every week from people who want to work with us,” Zeina Raad tells Nitelife magazine. Zeina is the marketing manager for Bristol’s Love Saves the Day festival, Bristol In:Motion and is now taking over all the marketing for Motion as well. That’s on top of consultancy work for High Definition Festival, Global Gathering, Love Box, The Great Escape, Wilderness and More Love Festival in Rio De Janeiro, which Zeina has just spent the last month setting up in Brazil. It’s a dream job for many, but it’s been a hard slog to get where she is now, Zeina explains. “I think it’s the same in any role. You don’t really see the fruits of your labour for a good long time and you just need to keep chipping away at it. It’s taken me probably 10/11 years to get to the point where I felt really happy and satisfied with where I am. Where I can make big decisions and I can have free creative reign.” It’s from this wealth of experience that Zeina has developed her distinctive style of marketing and PR - you can tell when it’s Zeina behind a promotion. Bristol residents will recognize the LSTD and In:Motion flyer boxes, reverse graffiti around the city (putting a stencil down on the floor and cleaning around the area) and, of course, the mural on the side of The Blue Mountain as you arrive into Stokes Croft.

“Then on the day of the show I’ll be on site from 7.30 in the morning and I run the front door. “I’m lucky because as soon as the doors close I’m finished, so I get to go and have a wander and have a drink and relax, whereas the other guys who put the festival on are working all day, all through the night and all through the next day. It’s pretty full on! “I’ve also learned that I should wait before getting my glitter done, because I then feel like an absolute nob when I’ve got to talk to the police with glitter all over my face.” As well as marketing manager for the festival and accountant, Zeina is a shareholder in Love Saves the Day and has helped grow the festival from its conception to a full-blown Bristol institution in only a few years. “We’ve grown year on year. In 2013 we went to two days because the Saturday tickets sold out so quickly. Saturday tickets were on sale on ebay for £300. £25 tickets for 300 quid! So we thought, we have to do another day.” This year the festival is moving to a new location at Eastville Park. Organisers have suggested that they will address the ongoing battle with the elements by introducing more tents at the festival this year. In the last few years, the festival has been known to suffer downpours with very little shelter available from the rain. “I don’t want to give away too much, but we do have more tented structures and other different interesting bits and bobs on site this year and installations to go and explore.” Another notable change this year is the line up, which has shifted from being heavily dominated by underground electronic music, to including a much broader range of genres this year, with acts like Rae Morris added to the line up, and headline sets from Azealia Banks and Jessie Ware.

“So when I went back home I got a job flyering for my local club and just took it all from there. I started at the bottom and worked my way up to where I am now. “I don’t set the alarm clock in the morning. I wake up naturally on my own. I love my job. I love planning – don’t get me wrong it’s a real pain in the arse, and it’s very, very hard and very intense work and it’s very unsociable as well, ironically, but it’s something I feel passionate about.” We asked Zeina if she had any advice to others wanting to follow the same path “At peak times I have between 40 -100 CVs sent to me every week from people who want to work with us. And I have lots of people coming to me who have really amazing degrees. But if you really know that this is what you want to do, it doesn’t matter how many degrees or letters you’ve got after your name, none of those academic achievements stack up against your experience. “Whether you like it or not, it doesn’t matter how old you are, you have to start from the bottom. Because there is no substitute for the amount of experience you’ve got if you want to pursue a career in events. “There are some corporate companies, for example Live Nation, who wouldn’t look at a candidate unless they had a 2:1 degree and I wouldn’t ever tell anyone not to go to university, I’ve got a degree myself (and as accounts manager, I’m extremely grateful for my accounting and finance module in my degree!), but I think people shouldn’t have the illusion that they’re going to slot in somewhere. You will have to start at the bottom. And just to persevere with it as well. “From the journey that I’ve had, my confidence is based on what I bring to the table and what I can do, and not on the brand that I’m working for. I’ve worked for big brands that are already established, and I’ve also been working on projects that were nothing and I’ve been there right from day dot. “When I’m talking or making decisions, I don’t think I know it, I know I know it. And that’s just come from the fifteen years experience that I’ve got, and there’s absolutely no substitute for that and you just need to be prepared for long hard hours, and just to stick with it. Because it’s only those people who are going to stick with it, for shitty money, that will last that test of time until you get to this level where you can look back and feel really proud and really happy with your achievements. Everyone has to flyer, basically” “If I had to describe Bristol in one word, I would describe it as ‘vibes’. I’ve got absolutely nothing bad to say about this city, and from someone who’s been a promoter in London, Birmingham, Stoke and Nottingham, I have to say it’s the most friendly, warmest and most amazing place to do this kind of work and there’s no bad animosity between anyone here. “It’s a breath of fresh air, coming from really competitive cities like Birmingham, where literally we have to have people stationed in shops and periodically walking up and down the street just to make sure flyers are staying in shops, because it’s so cut throat there.

“We don’t want to be known as an underground electronic music festival. We want to have something in there for everyone.

“We’ve set up a promoters’ forum on Facebook and everything gets sorted out really amicably and it’s really nice. We’re all supportive of each other and we’re so lucky because you don’t get that in any other city.”

“Because we’ve moved to Eastville Park we’ve got a lot more space there to utilise, and we’ve got an extra stage this year.”
