Yes Man Jellyfish
Bearcubs
Bristol’s Yes Man Jellyfish play and record live dance music. The unorthodox 5-piece was born after drummer Rick Entwistle and bassist Jim Brooke met playing in garage rock bands. They soon discovered a mutual love of dance grooves and, with previous experience in DJing and production between them, they recruited a vocalist, guitarist and keyboardist with a plan to create live, alternative dance music. With inspirations ranging from Laurent Garnier to Groove Armada and Todd Terje, they create a fun fusion of drum and bass, house and funk. And in little over a year as a fully-formed group, they’ve impressed audiences and musos alike, earning props from Bristol’s own Dr Meaker, whose remix of their track Sleep features on their debut EP Charm released last month. We asked bassist and Yes Man Jellyfish co-conspirator Rick to answer our 10 questions.
Bearcubs is the electronic project of 25-year-old Jack Ritchie. His distinct blend of emotive electronic, future garage and lo-fi house music has seen him heavily championed across the radio airwaves, getting spun by the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Danny Howard and Monki. Hot off the back of his Chroma EP, which just dropped late last year, his new four-track EP Underwaterfall is set for release this March. With a sound comparable to James Blake, he’s earned the support of tastemakers Majestic Casual, who present his debut headline tour this month with dates across the UK and Germany. He kicks off his UK run of dates at Crofters Rights. We took the opportunity to ask him 10 questions.

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? That Eugene Andrew ‘Gene’ Cernan (Captain, USN) was the last man to walk on the moon.
6. What was the last book you read? Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll.
2. Favourite track of all time? The impossible question! Pink Floyd’s The Great Gig in the Sky is about as close as I can get.
7. Favourite thing on TV? The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross is 30 minutes of retro bliss. It’s literally a work of art, as well a giant hug in rich colour.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Most likely Todd Terje – Inspector Norse. Nobody can resist its playfulness and stellar production. Failing that though, dig out a copy of Original Pirate Material and let the whole thing play out. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? I recently saw C Duncan at Thekla and it was everything I’d hoped for. I’ve been following him for a while and adore his record Architect. He wrote everything on that and his live band play it perfectly. Really sweet and magical guy too. Canadian punk is visceral and White Lung are absolutely epic – they throw down. IAMNOBODI from Germany and his lush jazz arrangements over hip hop and broken beat grooves. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Particle physics at CERN, working on the Large Hadron Collider discovering the foundations of everything.
8. Are you afraid of anything? It’s not a solid phobia but overtly large, unruly, bushy beards give you the creeps, right? Trim, shave or oil that thing, please. It’s got a pulse and it can smell fear. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you… A lot of people ask how our band name came about. It’s actually a line by Detective Holland ‘Dutch’ Wagenbach from an American crime drama called The Shield. He says to his partner Claudette: ‘the chief wanted me to be the spineless, company yes-man, jellyfish. I told him to shove it.’’ So Yes Man Jellyfish is saying stand up for what you believe in and keep on doing your thing.
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Ich habe etwas Deutsch gelernt. Bald gehe ich nach Berlin (I’ve learned some German, as I’m planning to move to Berlin). 2. Favourite track of all time? That’s hard to say… It changes from month to month, I have been obsessing over Bjork recently, so I will have to say every Bjork song. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? For house parties, Inspector Norse by Todd Terje never fails. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Nicholas Jaar, Jessy Lanza, Sampha. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? That would be a terrible thing, but if I had to choose I’d probably be some kind of carpenter or maybe an architect. Anything where you get to create, really.
6. What was the last book you read? Short Stories by Ernest Hemingway. 7. Favourite thing on TV? I don’t usually watch TV but recently I have gotten into House of Cards. Kevin Spacey is on top form. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Not really. I would probably be scared if I got attacked by a shark or venomous snake or something. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you… I used to scream in a hardcore/metal band. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Making music, and possibly buying a plant for my new studio.
10. What are you doing tomorrow? Playing an outer space-themed gig and making some floating shelves (they are a real thing, honestly – look it up!).

‘Noise rock is probably the easiest summary of our music,’ says Spectres front man Joe Hatt. Originally hailing from North Devon, Spectres have been subverting expectations in Bristol for the past five years. After their 2015 album debut Dying, for example, the uncategorisable, noisy four piece surprised us the following year with a full remix record. Dead invites a slew of different artists ranging from techno wizard Richard Fearless (Death in Vegas) to post rock giants Mogwai to pull Dying apart track-by-track. Joe continues: ‘There’s more noise than anything else. But we’re not pure noise, we do write songs as well. It’s not shoegaze or psych rock, which people often tag us as. Noise is the middle ground and we build from there.’ Joining Joe along with guitarist Adrian Dutt, drummer Andy Came and bass-and-vocalist Darren Frost in Bedminster; we try to get to the bottom of what Spectres are really all about. It’s clear that a sense of anarchy runs through everything they do – shrugging off the machine and doing things their own way, whether people like it or not (as is often the case, they say). ‘We don’t sit down and think: what can we do to wind people up or get attention?’ says Joe. ‘But a lot of it is spur of the moment decisions. And if it comes off then great, if not, it doesn’t really matter.’ Whatever your view, Spectres are fully entrenched in the local scene, not just through their sonic offerings, but also through limited edition artworks and their semi-regular zine, Dark Habits. Joe also runs Bristol-based off kilter booking agency Qu Junktions; and Joe and Adrian head up Howling Owl Records
between them, which began with the pair making tapes of music they thought people needed to hear.

Joe explains: ‘Coming from North Devon, both Adrian and myself had grown up in a town where if you wanted anything to happen, you had to do it yourself. I ran a skateboarding and music magazine, and Adrian had always put on shows.
Much of the hype surrounding Spectres comes from the fallout of their live shows – an ear shattering, tell-your-friends experience, no doubt. But with their second studio album on the way, recording is clearly another important element for the band.
We make the music that we do because it’s like a weird counseling session for us. ‘So we came to Bristol and within about six months we were playing in bands and coming across music that we thought was really good, but no one was putting it out. So we just started doing it. We put out the first few Spectres EPs as well, but always hoping that someone else would put it out for us.’ They’re now signed to Sonic Cathedral who’ve released Dying, Dead, and now Spectres’ forthcoming album Condition, which is due 10 March. ‘Condition is the logical step from the first album,’ says Joe. ‘It’s a bit more brooding – it feels less rushed.’ ‘It’s an expansion on the sections from the first album that we really enjoyed playing live and bringing in those elements that happen naturally – filtering those big bits into it,’ says Adrian. Joe adds: ‘And not worrying about things like starting the

So hopefully people enjoy having those two different experiences. ‘It was important to get someone who knew us to record us. When we tried to record in Devon, or when we first moved to Bristol, we weren’t confident enough to say to the engineer, “No, we want to sound like this.” So they’d make it sound how they thought it should sound. ‘When we first recorded with Dom Mitchison [Malthouse Studios] for the Hunger EP, it was in some squat bedroom in Stokes Croft with barely any equipment at all, but he just nailed it. Since then, we’ve done everything with him.’ Spectres gained national exposure in late 2015 with their alternative theme song for their namesake Bond movie. A duet between Joe Hatt and vocalist Ela Orleans, Spectre was released on limited edition gold vinyl 007-inch. ‘It was a very long, well thought out – if we do say so ourselves – prank on the music industry,’ says Joe. While presented as a joke, the single was another way of conveying a sentiment they feel strongly about, and resist across all of their platforms.

‘It’s our frustration at the apathy in music at the moment,’ says Joe. ‘No one really listens to anything anymore. It’s trying to make people react to something and feel something in the music they listen to, rather than letting it pass over them. ‘We get some hostility from some pockets of the Bristol music scene, because they think we’re just pranksters and we don’t care, or they don’t like the way we go about things. ‘But then we’re part of a really strong scene of bands that stems from Howling Owl, which for us is much more rewarding to be a part of. Not just rock bands, but electronic musicians and DJs who get where we’re coming from.’ ‘There’s always going to be some notoriety because we ended up in the semi spotlight,’ says Adrian. ‘Which makes people look at what we’re doing, and if they don’t know us, or get what we’re about, it can look a bit odd.
‘I think we’re doing something different and there are not many bands willing to put themselves in the firing line. I like to think that people can see our honesty. Certainly when people come to see us live, that’s the game changer – they’re like fucking hell, what is that? ‘That’s ultimately what we’re trying to do. We’re in a band because we make music to have fun. We make the music that we do because it’s like a weird counselling session for us. And it’s so good when people embrace that.’ ‘We are sincere in what we do musically,’ says Joe. ‘In our songs and our artwork, there’s a stupid amount of thought behind all of it. We’re just quite restless people and when something annoys us, we’ll react to it and do something that other bands may not end up doing because they don’t want to upset someone, or say something about a band who might be on a booking agency that they want to go on, or because it might
cost them the chance of getting a review from a magazine in eight months time. ‘Maybe if we did just shut up every now and again, things might be different. But it wouldn’t be fun. Part of being in a band and being in the music industry is to say what we think and have views. We know that we’re never going to have a big gig at Glastonbury or sell out a 500 capacity venue, that’s just not going to happen.’ ‘It makes it easier,’ says Darren. ‘As soon as you stop dreaming about being a rock star – and we learnt that a long time ago – you make honest music.’ Andy adds: ‘And then every new situation and scenario we find ourselves in is a bonus. We appreciate everything.’
People see us live and they get completely blown apart by the volume. ‘If we get fed at a gig we’re still happy!’ Joe says. To celebrate the release of Conditions, Spectres are transforming The Cube cinema on 4 March for a seated AV show with artist Jason Barker, who does the visuals for the brilliant Kayla Painter’s AV shows. ‘We’re a rock band, so being in a seated environment is going to be different,’ says Joe. ‘They’re letting us move the cinema screen to the front of the stage and we’re going to play behind it with projections on the screen and we’re going to be lit from behind – so there’s going to be a lot of weird visual trickery going on. ‘We’re going to double the sound system, so it’s going to sound massive as well. Hopefully they’ll let us close the doors so people can’t leave!’

DR MEAKER’S DIRT & SOUL TOUR LAKOTA
Producer, multi-instrumentalist and all-round Bristol boy, Clive Meaker fronts his electric 8-piece cohort Dr Meaker. With fingers deep in the UK drum and bass scene, as well as taking major influences from soul music, Dr Meaker excite their listeners with heavy basslines and angelic-but-energetic vocal tracks. Bursting through the emerging lists on many of the top UK radio shows, Dr Meaker’s caramel blend of smooth soul and drum and bass gives us a taste of the raw originality and creative sound direction found only on the Bristol underground. Celebrating the release of their new album Dirt & Soul, Dr Meaker made their way back to Bristol for a one-off night at Lakota alongside some of the city’s finest. Supported by Reprazent’s DJ Suv, who sent out out a high-energy ‘influences’ set, DJ Bunjy, Roy Bar B2B with Bundat, Future Dub Orchestra and the mighty Tribe Steppaz, the night was set alight with Bristol love. A true demonstration of the immense concentration of talent in the city. Bursting onto the stage to a (suddenly) packed-out Lakota, Dr Meaker wet the hungry crowd’s appetite with big bouncing basslines, sexy saxophones and heartbreakingly soulful vocals. Playing tracks from their latest release Dirt & Soul, plus
a couple of throwbacks from their 2008 debut album A Lesson from the Speaker, the band inspired thoughts of sunsetsoaked evenings, festival fields and frantic two-stepping. An original high-energy live band, Dr Meaker tirelessly worked the eager crowd with their soulful anthems, leaving a flurry of shoe scuffs on the floor and a roomful of aching muscles. Nitelife caught up with Clive Meaker and the band just before they took to the stage…
I like to think we’re doing something original and that our sound is unique. With a fusion of two prominent genres that are almost as far apart as you can get, Dr Meaker’s mixture of uplifting drum and bass beats and sweet, soulful vocals are organic and original to the Bristol band.
‘It’s a sound I have been developing over the course of my whole career. I have always loved classic and soulful female vocals, but was also always inspired by Prodigy and other late 90s drum and bass producers. Coming from Bristol and with a musical background inspired by artists like Massive Attack and Roni Size, I wanted to do something similar but pioneering in the fusion of genres. The sound is always developing and moving forward, but can really be described as a fusion of dirt and soul, hence the title of the new album. ‘We are a unique, live act that combine melodic drum and bass with world-class vocalists and exciting collaborations. I like to think we’re doing something original and that our sound is unique to us and to Bristol. Dr Meaker is a collaborative effort that is made possible through the medium of many talented vocalists, musicians and artists. We are very Bristol-based and like to collaborate with vocalists within the city, helping them develop their sound and find their voice whilst they help us do the same.’ True to form, Dirt & Soul is rife with collaborations And sees the welcome return of guest vocalists Sian Evans, Lorna King and Yolanda.

‘Yolanda is a longterm collaborator. We know each other from way back in the day and we’ve kept a working relationship going all these years. ‘In terms of fresh emerging talent in Bristol, there’s just so much at the moment. The Bristol scene is so strong, attracting more and more musicians, fusions and cocktails of genres – it’s really exciting to be around. There are several artists making big sounds in the city at the moment. Keep your eyes out for Paragon, Yes Man Jellyfish, Type Sun, Octopi and Break.’ With the daylight hours now inching ever longer, we’re already thinking ahead to the warmer months and so are Dr Meaker, who are hoping to book up a full on festival season as they tour and promote the new album. ‘We hope to be back at Glastonbury this year, of course, back in the Dance Village – our favourite slot. We’re also hoping to be at Boomtown and Bestival this summer, amongst a bunch of live shows and gigs. It’s all in the pipeline!’
Dr Meaker is a collaborative effort that is made possible through the medium of many talented vocalists, musicians and artists. Not only has Clive got big plans for the band this summer, but he’s also recently launched a cooler-than-cool, limited edition art collection in collaboration with the talented artist Gethin Ceidiog Hughes. Aptly named ‘Broken Soul’ and inspired by the band’s recent release, Gethin’s intention was to create a visual representation of his exploration of the album to find common ground between the music and his own art. The collection consists of 90 limited edition ‘Broken Soul’ screen prints and t-shirts that are available online. After being adjusted into place for a couple of photographs, Clive left us with a smile and some killer advice for any newbies cutting their teeth on the Bristol underground scene: ‘Be nice to everyone! You never know who you’re talking to, plus people are much more likely to want to help you out if you’re friendly. It can get you further than you think.’ A Bristol boy through and through, we’re expecting big things in 2017 from Clive and his amazing band, the wonderful Dr Meaker. Watch this space.

MACY GRAY BRISTOL JAZZ FESTIVAL
Macy Gray needs no introduction. The American soul singer and R&B star has been a household name since her 1999 debut album On How Life Is. Over the years she has collaborated with major names, including Fatboy Slim and Will.i.am, and continues to surprise us still, recently teaming up with pop mega-star Ariana Grande. Older fans were re-introduced to Macy Gray last year via her tenth studio album and first fully-fledged jazz record, Stripped. Many will know Macy best for her pop-R&B noughties chart toppers, but the Grammy Award-winning singer, whose voice is heavily inspired by Billie Holiday, has taken a different pace in her latest release, which features both original numbers and jazz covers of some of her most-loved tracks, including a fresh take on Metallica’s Nothing Else Matters (which was previously reimagined on her 2012 album Covered). To celebrate the release of Stripped, Macy will be performing at Bristol Jazz and Blues Festival at Colston Hall later this month, promising a set including songs from across all her
studio releases, but with a special focus on music from her latest album. Nitelife were honoured with the chance to speak with the icon ahead of her Bristol show to talk about her jazz debut.
Jazz is super big, it’s like the big league ball of music, so it was excellent that my album was noticed. When you hear the name Macy Gray, your mind conjures thoughts of her distinctive raspy voice, fur coats and, most notably, her hit debut single I Try. But before all that, the
singer started out as a jazz vocalist in a friend’s band. ‘Jazz was my first introduction to music and that kind of stuff never leaves you. I know it’s kind of cliché to make a jazz album later on in your music career, but when I was offered the chance to make Stripped, I thought it was a really good opportunity to do something different. We recorded in a church one night in the old school way too, so I was really excited about that.’ Putting a jazz spin on some timeless classics, the album features a selection of Macy Gray’s hits, including I Try and She Ain’t Right For You. ‘It was the label’s call to cover I Try – they were really insistent on me doing that. But there are some songs in my catalogue that I really love and also feature on the album. It was fun because we got to play around with different ways to re-visit some of my most popular songs. That was really cool.’ Macy Gray also made her first foray into the world of binaural

recording with this latest release – a method that uses microphones arranged to create a 3D sonic experience, as though the listener is in the room. The result in this case is an up close and personal listening experience, from the echoing sound of the music travelling around the church where it was recorded, to the dusty sounds of the double bass and crisp vocals of Macy Gray.
It was the label’s call to cover I Try – they were really insistent on me doing that. ‘I think I was a lot more conscious of what I was doing when we were recording binaurally. Usually, I would just go into the
studio and I would sing my heart out because I could, and that would be that. ‘There’s always a fallback in the studio, because you can edit it or tune things out, or you can just do it over again. This recording experience was different. We would record a track live with the band once and that was it, so I was a lot more conscious of my performance and staying in pitch. I was a lot more conscious of myself technically as a whole.’ The singer songwriter who is used to dominating the pop and R&B charts has introduced herself to a different audience with the release of Stripped, but the switch-up has paid off for the singer, whose new direction has been showered with unanimous praise from jazz critics, including the Billboard jazz charts. ‘Jazz is super big, it’s like the big league ball of music, so it was excellent that my album was noticed. We even got to number 3 in the US jazz album chart. I was really honoured by that.’
The distinctive singer hopes another jazz album is on the cards for the near future, but in the meantime, she is focusing her attention on the release of her recent single, White Man – a socio-political song that responds to race relations in America and illustrates the current high tensions with a beautifully choreographed video, which is available to watch on YouTube now. ROSS SILCOCKS Ross Silcocks Age: 26 Job title: Founder and director of Entirety Labs
Film, music and snowboarding enthusiast Ross Silcocks has succeeded in building a business that combines his three greatest loves. Entirety Labs is a film production company who make insanely good videos for music-related events of all kinds, from Bristol’s brilliant The Blast events, to Iceland’s biggest festival, Secret Solstice or Bulgaria’s breathtaking Meadow in the Mountains. ‘Entirety started as a snowboarding clothing brand when I was at uni,’ he explains. ‘I was doing a degree in digital film production and while I was studying, I was also making films for free – doing bands, tours, documentaries… Just to get my name out there. ‘After uni, it probably took another two years of working for free or fifty quid here and there. But then after a while, I found that I was apparently doing a good job and I was getting booked.
‘But I was being asked to do maybe two festivals a weekend, so I was giving jobs away to mates and people I had met over the course of my filming life. Everyone loved me, but I wasn’t making any money! I was just giving away these clients and if that person had done a good job, they’d probably go back to them. ‘I realised that I needed to start a company. The whole time I’d been doing film stuff, I’d also been building my clothing brand, Entirety. So I made the decision to bring the two together. ‘Labs’ came about because we cook stuff up, we experiment – we’re like the Breaking Bad of film! ‘Now I’ve got this incredible team, who are so involved and so excited to be a part of what Entirety Labs is that they’re bringing in their own clients, we’re evolving and it’s all organic.’ Take a look at any of Entirety’s work, and it doesn’t long to work out that this is a cool company. ‘We do things differently. We don’t do corporate shoots – if they come up, no matter how much money they are, we don’t take them. We want to do stuff with edge, we want to do stuff that we get fulfillment out of. ‘Entirety is all based in music. It started with me going on tour with metal bands back in the day, now we’ve moved toward electronic music – partly because of my tastes – but the fact we get to work with some of the artists that we do is incredible.’ Just one of those careertopping moments was when he was recently invited along on a European tour with Skrillex’s hyper-cool label, OWSLA. ‘That is one of the most talked-about labels right now. And the fact I got to go around Europe with a label as big as that with those artists is amazing. ‘They booked us into the Crane Hotel in Amsterdam. It’s only got four rooms and each room is a shipping container. You have to take a series of lifts to get up, because it is essentially just a crane. It’s the craziest place – there’s an open-air jacuzzi on the top level and the bed sheets are made of gold! ‘I spent years sleeping on floors in the most ridiculous, horrific rooms, so now a Premier Inn is still amazing to me, but to stay in that place was unreal.’ Having seemingly achieved the elusive dream career, Ross explains how he got there: ‘I knew that I could not sit still and work from the same place every single day, so I left uni thinking: what do I love? I love film above all. I love music and I love snowboarding. So I thought, let’s try and do those things. ‘If you really, really love something as much as I love music and film, if you can put your passion and drive into those things – how is it not going to work? You get out what you put in.’
This passion shows through in all Entirety productions, and is a driving factor that’s shared by the whole team. ‘Everything about Entirety is the atmosphere. If we come away from filming something and you can get a real sense of the atmosphere, that’s one of the main focuses of what we do. Sometimes you see a festival promo and it might be a cool film, it might be shot really well, but if you don’t come away from it with that heart-throbbing, oh my god I want to be there feeling – is it a good film?’ Ross says that persistence is key when it comes to building a career in film, having rewarded a few eager beavers in his time. ‘People who have kept constantly on at us for a chance to work with us, and not been effected by us not replying because we’re plainly too busy, those people will gain experience with companies like us. It might be the case that someone has emailed us a month ago and it’s sat in our inbox, then they email us again and a job has come up – they’re in! ‘We try and do things with Bristol artists as much as possible. People like Love Saves the Day, Who Cares and The Blast – who are like our number one clients. The Blast do a standup job with supporting the local scene, and we try to take after them in that respect. ‘We use that same mentality when bringing people onto our team. We are looking for the people who are up-andcoming, that maybe we’ve got a few years on in terms of experience, but the talent is there. We spend a lot of time sussing these people out and we’re very careful who we ask to join our team, so we can facilitate helping them grow and get a vast array of experience – and in return we get to harness their talent for Entirety!’
