Sector 7 Sounds
Samson Sounds
Sector 7 Sounds heads Boofy and Lemzly Dale are key players in the 140bpm microcosm of Bristol. Boofy is a bonafide Bandulu member alongside Kahn, Neek and Hi5ghost, while Lemzly Dale’s Holy I$$h remix was laid to wax on Bandulu Records in 2017. They launched Sector 7 Sounds together in 2013 with their Catch a Body / Banshee 12”, putting out a handful of very well received releases in the years following; though things really hotted up on the DIY grime label last year, with EP releases from Drone and Lemzly Dale’s excellent Catty EP. Sector 7 Sounds is taking over Thekla for an evening this March, bringing in one of the scene’s finest, Commodo with Rocks FOE, along with Sector 7 family Drone and Jook – plus a look in from Boofy and Lemzly Dale, of course.
The latest signing to Gardna and friends’ Boom Sound label is Glasgow-based collective Samson Sounds with their track featuring MC Tom Spirals, Chatterbox. Patois mixed with Glasgow patter, we guarantee this infectious tune will get your feet stomping. Evolving out of the homemade dubwise Samson Soundsystem, Samson Sounds combine guitar strings, brass, vocals and digital production to create uplifting reggae sounds rooted in sound system culture. On hearing Chatterbox performed live at Scotland’s Eden Festival, Gardna signed it on the spot. Boom Sound is bringing Samson Sounds and Tom Spirals to Attic Bar this month for a single launch party, alongside Chief Rockas Collective, ASBO Disco with soul singer Yemi Bolatiwa, and the Boom Sound residents. Samson Sounds producer Anders answers our 10 questions.

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? LEMZLY DALE: The swirl on a Poliwhirl’s belly is actually its internal organs, they just have really thin skin. 2. Which song by another artist most inspires you? BOOFY: Mndsgn – Frugality. 3. Who are your top three acts right now? L: Pretty much just had Rocks FOE, James Blake and Manonmars on rotation for the past few weeks. 4. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? B: Dazz Band – You Are My Starship (Urbanmix) – it’s a cheat code. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? L: Sulking. Nah, probably more art and design stuff.
6. What was the last book you read? B: Using the term read loosely, Clubbed: a visual history of UK club culture. 7. Most recent binge watch? L: Videos of goats eating different foods. 8. Do you have a party trick? B: Yeah, I do this thing where I disappear when everyone else is looking the other way. Either that or beating a buffet 1-0 to me. 9. Tell us something people don’t generally know about you... L: I’ve got this thing called Brown’s syndrome, which means I can only look up properly with one eye. My left eye just veers off halfway. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? B: Gym and then bleaching the kitchen floors. Life’s a bit mental.
sector7sounds.com // @sector7sounds
THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? About the life of Salif Keita, the albino Malian musician. He sometimes known as ‘the Golden Voice of Africa’ and has led a career of 50 years. 2. Which song by another artist most inspires you? A difficult one for sure, depends on mood and what the day needs done. One that always makes me smile is Ndima Ndapedza by Oliver Mtukudzi. 3. Who are your top three acts right now? Bassekou Kouyate, Thornato and ParliamentFunkadelic. 4. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Chatterbox! No doubt. Tom Spirals’ vocals and the phat brass have yet to fail to lift the vibe. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? There are so many things that could be done... I studied zoology at university, so I guess I might have found myself in that vein of work.
6. What was the last book you read? The Dispossesed by Ursula le Guin. 7. Most recent binge watch? Would be quite a while ago, but it was Westworld – not much internet opportunities living in the woods. 8. Do you have a party trick? I would say setting up the party usually does the trick. 9. Tell us something people don’t generally know about you... I study massage and bodywork. I believe it’s really important to stay connected with our whole selves. It helps with staying limber for dancing too! 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Tomorrow is the first day back teaching in Glasgow for the sound system project for both me and Tom Spirals. We work with young people between 12 and 18 to build a 12-volt sound system, learn to make beats, DJ, MC and run the system. It’s a great project to be part of. We are running three different ones across Scotland between now and summer.

SWINDLE
At the end of January, producer Swindle dropped his masterpiece of a record No More Normal, recorded at Peter Gabriel’s idyllic Real World Studios, which has hosted artists from Beyoncé to Björk. The album was three years in the making and the realisation of ideas a decade strong, bringing together Swindle’s career-long catalogue of influences across grime, jazz, funk, soul, hip hop and R&B, brought to life through scaled-up live instrumentation and boundarypushing production. The producer has become increasingly drawn to vocal features over his last few releases, and with No More Normal Swindle presents an entirely vocal album, with high profile contributions including Ghetts, Kiko Bun, D Double E and Kojey Radical, who feature repeatedly throughout the record’s 11 tracks. Swindle has long had an important connection to Bristol’s music scene and the new album opens and closes with a powerful intro / outro from Bristol’s Rider Shafique and features Eva Lazarus on three tracks, making full use of her chameleonic skills as a soul singer and fierce MC. Last month, he chose Bristol’s Rough Trade as the location for a screening of his No More Normal documentary (via Red Bull Music) and Q&A session with Butterz head Elijah. ‘I don’t think you can do music in the UK and not have a special relationship with Bristol’ he says. ‘It’s probably one of the most creative places in the country, and working with
people like Joker and playing at places like Motion, it becomes one of those home from homes. Everyone’s had an afterparty and a red stripe in Bristol, if you haven’t you’ve not lived. ‘Rider Shafique and Eva Lazarus’ significance on the album is really important to me. With Rider’s opening speech and his outro, he almost works as my narrator. He’s played a massive part in getting what the message is supposed to be across. His input isn’t just a verse, it definitely means something. And Eva is like the glue to it all also, the way that she reappears on the album, she’s a constant thread. I think she’s incredible, I really do, and Rider; I’m super blessed to have them involved.’
I don’t think you can do music in the UK and not have a special relationship with Bristol Swindle has previous releases on Deep Medi and Planet Mu, though he’s been with Elijah and Skilliam’s Butterz since his 2015 album Peace, Love & Music. No More Normal sees the producer team up once again with Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings, who put out his 2014 Walter’s Call EP in collaboration with Deep Medi, however, Swindle is quick to
point out that Butterz are still very much a part of his process. ‘Elijah and Skilliam are a part of the journey wherever we’re at. Brownswood are a wealth of knowledge and resource and bring stuff to the table that make them a perfect partner for this record. It was more about putting the dream team together, which still includes Elijah and Skilliam quite heavily – the family got bigger. ‘With Butterz, I think people look at it like a business, but really it’s a support system for each other. Whatever any of us are working on, we’re all aware of it and those boys were in the studio when I recorded half the album. Recording at Real World was actually Elijah’s idea.’ With more than 10 featured vocalists – many of which he’s worked with back and forth across his career – and instrumental contributions from the likes of Yussef Dayes, Nubya Garcia and Riot Jazz, the resulting album is more of a collaborative project, with Swindle at the helm steering the ship in line with the changing winds. ‘I wanted to do a full vocal album, so everything was really led by songs and ideas. Everything was built from scratch, mostly with the vocalists and musicians in the room. So a small idea that comes in 10 minutes makes progress over the next eight months and becomes something much bigger. I just follow wherever the music is leading me. I don’t imagine an end goal, I just create. I chase what feels good.’
PREVIEW // 29 No More Normal also marks a return to Swindle’s roots, whose introduction to music came via his blues guitarist father, giving him guitar lessons and putting him in front of a piano from a young age – a skill that later landing him a spot as the keys player for Mala’s Mala in Cuba live show – and whose record collection still greatly influences Swindle today. Although the producer has always favoured live instrumentation in his music, No More Normal takes a significant leap forward in this direction. His gurgling, grime track Drill Work was created with an eight-piece horn section, 16 strings, a bass guitar and drums. The result is a future-classic grime instrumental, but with an energy and warmth that can’t be replicated on a computer. ‘One of the early ideas of this record was “what would it be like if we didn’t cut any corners?” That turned into replacing all strings with a real quartet and working with much bigger ensembles of instrumentation. Like a lot of music that I’ve grown up listening to, I wanted to make a new record in that way.’ At first glance, No More Normal seems like an unusual statement from a producer who is anything but ordinary; one who has bridged a gap between genres as seemingly disparate as grime and funk. So who or what is he challenging?
It was about making our own thing and presenting it our own way – gathering up the X-Men ‘Everything’ Swindle explains. ‘The meaning changes for me so much, because the title came before the music. It was about making our own thing and presenting it our own way – gathering up the X-Men. It’s also about challenging your own aspirations. Now that it’s out, it feels more like a statement of ambition. It’s also a statement of unity and creating our own universe and inspiring others to do the same. No More Normal means anything’s possible, if you can dream of something, you can go and get it.’ Swindle is bringing the No More Normal live show to Fiddlers this month via Colston Hall Presents with support from Eva Lazarus and Bristol vocalist Javeon, and he has some surprises in store. ‘The show is definitely bigger than a regular show. It’s going to be a lot of fun. I’ve got a lot of ideas and I think lots of people will be happy.’ Though Swindle is undoubtedly a serious talent, who has proved his worth and versatility time and time again over the years, No More Normal feels like a new chapter for Swindle and certainly a step up from anything he’s done previously. There is a sense of excitement and possibility in the record and in hearing him talk about it. ‘Throughout the last 10 years, I guess I’ve been constantly looking for why I’m able to do this, why I’m able to make music, what I’m supposed to do with it... This album is almost like a realisation of that, it feels like this is the starting point of where I’m going. ‘What I can guarantee is that I’m fully committed to music and I’m going to give it everything that I’ve got, and spend every waking moment trying to create something bigger. Whatever the next step is, I’ll just wait for the music to guide me, but in terms of what the sound is, I have no idea. ‘I’m working on new music constantly. Some of it may end up as Swindle music, some of it may be other music. It’s been really good connecting with artists so closely over this project and opening up ideas of what stuff I could do with other artists. ‘I also just want to say that without the level of collaboration, people sharing something and being open to new ideas, the album wouldn’t have come together like this. So all the compliments and stuff, I want to share them – with Eva, Rider, Kojey, the musicians. I want everyone to feel like it’s ours. Also the listener and the people who are writing about it and the video directors... It started off as an album, but it’s become something different. It feels like a bigger movement. ‘It’s not even my album anymore, it’s ours. Even when you put this interview out and someone picks it up and then interacts with the album for the first time, then you’ve just become a contributor too, do you know what I’m saying? This one’s all of ours.’

PHAELEH
Bristol-based producer Matt Preston aka Phaeleh has been accruing a massive underground following since the release of his debut album Fallen Light in 2008, honing his inimitable style of cinematic electronica with live instrumentation ever since. Floating in the cavernous space between dubstep, garage, electronica and house, whilst flirting with jazzier tones similar to artist such as Four Tet and Floating Points, Phaeleh’s sound is difficult to define. Though his sheer originality and ability to innovate is what has earned him a reputation as one of the most intriguing producers to emerge out of Bristol. 2018 saw the release of his eighth studio album Clarity, an 11-track record steeped in rich, textural sound that adds further layers to Phaeleh’s already-complex production. In keeping with his other releases, Clarity does not disappoint, as the Bristol-based artist succeeds yet again in utterly immersing you in the beauty of his sound, whilst further pushing the versatility of his production. Having learnt a lot in the decade since his debut LP, Matt returned to a DIY setup for his latest album, drawing a line
under a very frustrating few years trying to release his previous album Lost Time, which eventually came out in 2017 on Undertow Records.
The more people involved, the more you’re making music by committee ‘The important thing for me with Clarity was about the process being enjoyable, more than musical style’ Matt explains. ‘With my previous album, the music was three or four years old by the time it came out due to delays and I ended up making lots of changes. I felt like the music suffered as a result – it ended up feeling watered down from taking so long. A lot of my earlier work, the most popular stuff, was made relatively quickly and came out within six to nine months. I wanted Clarity to come out in 2018 because the music, one track aside, had all been made that year.’
Going solo, Phaeleh was able to adhere to his own deadlines and go at his own pace rather than succumbing to the pressures of the industry, allowing him a level of autonomy that he missed in previous releases – choosing creative control over a more immediate path to success. ‘I have had management that have been great and really helped me get my music out to people,’ says Phaeleh ‘but the more people involved, the more you’re making music by committee. You’ve got lots of different opinions pulling you in different directions – too many cooks sort of thing. ‘You end up with four or five people coming back to you as well as your friends saying “oh, I don’t like that”, when I was actually happy with the idea’ Phaeleh continues. ‘I should try and be stronger minded, but I do listen to others as I value their opinions. I felt like a lot of the tracks ended up very different to when I first made them, so with this new album I trusted my gut and my primary focus was to make something that I wanted to make, with my secondary focus being whether people would like it. ‘Other than my ambient albums, I can’t even listen to any of my other releases, yet I can listen to this one. I like it and there’s
LOCAL TALENT // 37
a level of autonomy there that I haven’t had in a long time.’ Matt explains that he has become cynical about work offers and opportunities as it’s very easy for an artist to sign away their rights and freedom for amounts of money that don’t reflect their talent or potential. So, in keeping with his ‘freestyle’ approach, Matt self-released Clarity online without physical copies, singles or videos. ‘I just stuck it online and went “hey everyone, there’s an album out today”, which was a big risk. It doesn’t necessarily generate much exposure, but I wanted the music to speak for itself. If someone finds it a year or two later, that’s fine, as there is no one saying this album has to be successful now so we can get our investment back, which is what you get with labels and management. If no one else is dependent on your music doing well, you can be more, I dunno, freestyle with it.’ Free from external pressure, I asked Matt how Clarity’s recording process differed from his other albums, as he was able to return to a more traditional recording setup of live instruments, hardware synths and drum machines, rather than getting lost tweaking things on a computer screen. He explains he took comfort in not having to compromise his
creativity for the sake of someone else whose priority is a product and the reception of that product, rather than artist authenticity.
Taking the reins on the production of his latest release, Matt was able to create something that was organic and more true to his sound as a result.
‘If you take something like Fallen Light or Tide or even Lost Time, for each album I make 100+ tracks and force myself to sit in the studio all day every day, staying up all night and not sleeping, churning and churning out ideas. With this album, there are 11 tracks on it and I think I considered about 15 songs. When there’s no one pressuring you, you can trust your gut. When I wasn’t feeling creative I thought it was pointless being in the studio.
‘Clarity summed up how I was feeling. I’d had a rough few years in the industry dealing with a few problems and things
‘I’ve taken more time for myself and taken days off to go for nice walks and actually listen to music, instead of churning out ideas like a machine’ Matt continues. ‘It has meant that when I do sit down and make something, I end up making something worthwhile. It was weirdly enjoyable and there wasn’t this pressure that a lot of creatives – whether they’re artists, musicians, writers – will torture themselves over, feeling like they need to be making stuff all the time. ‘The quality control was also higher this time and if I started something and I liked it, I could see it through to the end.’
My primary focus was to make something that I wanted to make not necessarily going to plan, and I found it very stressful. The life of being a music maker isn’t as fun as you might imagine and the pressures you put on yourself are probably more than the pressures externally. ‘I found I had a fresh start, a fresh perspective and, it sounds cheesy, I had a certain clarity in life as well as with my music and where it fits, with no illusions. When you have a team of people working with you, even though they know you might
38 // LOCAL TALENT
LOCAL TALENT // 39
be quite underground and have a specific fanbase, they’re always trying to make you a bigger name because there is bigger money, but that’s not what I’m about. So, it’s about clarity in what matters to me most – which is making music that I like. I’d rather make an album that I enjoy and a thousand people buy it than make an album I don’t like and 100,000 people buy it. For me, it’s more about artistic authenticity than making money.’ Matt’s impressive back catalog has already seen him establish a strong fanbase, contributing to more than 2 million monthly views on YouTube. The Bristol-based producer’s beautifully distinctive sound is full of substance and melancholia and has received support from Radio 1, 6 Music, 1Xtra and Rinse FM. He’s also risen to prominence as an in-demand remixer, reworking artists as diverse as chart-topping dance outfit Rudimental to classical composer Ludovico Einaudi, as well as popular acts such as Charli XCX and Niki & The Dove. With the release of Clarity marking 10 years since his debut album, I asked Matt how he felt his music had progressed and developed since then. ‘It’s got deeper in terms of evoking an emotional response in the listener. I think I’ve been more ambitious with what I’m trying to do. I listen to my old songs and they sound really stripped back and minimal and I kind of miss that as it was a lot easier to finish the music! The process now is a lot more complex, even though it is similar ideas. I feel like I’ve pushed myself more so that I’m not quite as comfortable with what I’m doing. I’m a lot freer in a way; you know, I have found myself
making albums that I actually don’t like, but I thought I was making the music that people wanted, but there wasn’t that personal connection with it that there is now.’
I wanted the music to speak for itself. If someone finds it a year or two later, that’s fine In terms of how living in Bristol has influenced Phaeleh, as well as fostering the culture of open-mindedness that has helped today’s DIY school of thought artists such as Young Echo and IDLES prove that you make a career out of music on your own terms, Matt says that the early ‘Bristol sound’ artists showed him that he was not limited to making sounds on his computer. ‘It was the old Full Cycle stuff like Roni Size and the breakbeat era that was really important for me. There were a couple of albums that made it clear to me that you can make electronic music with instruments, it didn’t just have to be synths and drum machines. ‘I think Bristol is a great part of the world. Everyone genuinely seems to be very creative and open-minded and I think people in Bristol are very accepting of different things – it’s far less
rigid than other places. I think most people get a buzz from the city. Everyone’s pretty down to earth and there aren’t too many egos. I think it’s just an inspiring city and a good place to make music.’ As for what’s in store for the rest of 2019, while a Clarity tour has yet to be announced, positive reviews are travelling fast so fans shouldn’t rule out a chance to see it performed live in the near future. ‘I’ve got a London show coming up and one in Hungary and there are some American dates, so in terms of a tour that’s more likely to be in the States, but there are definitely a few dates that haven’t been announced yet that will be in the UK – we’ll see! ‘I have started dabbling with some new music and there’s a chap that does these awesome videos on YouTube called Sean Doran who uses all this awesome NASA footage – I want to write him music to go with that. I’d quite like to get a couple of EPs out as I’ve released albums in 2016, 2017 and 2018 and it’s quite a burden, not only on yourself but on those around you, so I think I might tone it down a bit for a while!’

40 // THE INFLUENCERS
THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH
DAN CHANDLER Dan Chandler has certainly paid his dues in the Bristol music industry. Today, he’s one of the brains behind Bristol’s biggest city festival The Downs, helped mastermind the event that legitimised Lloyds Amphitheatre as a big name concert venue, and looks after tours for the likes of Nick Cave, Sleaford Mods and The Pixies up and down the country. After moving to Bristol in 2002, Dan started out working at the O2 Academy box office. It wasn’t long before he had an eager foot well and truly in the door, becoming the venue’s marketing manager, as well as generally pitching in across the board. ‘I was doing daytime box office shifts and then coming back in at night and working the door – all the old Full Cycle nights, all the BlowPop nights. Gradually, I got more involved with the marketing of the venue and the running of the venue in all aspects – the production side, the junior managing side, I even used to DJ for BlowPop back in the day, so it was across a lot of different angles.’ On top of that, while the venues quietened down over summer, Dan migrated to the festival fields, working as an artist liaison for Download, V Festival and Secret Garden Party. He now packs out his summers stage managing for the likes of Wireless and Neverworld, as well as Bristol’s own Love Saves the Day and Simple Things. In 2016, Dan became part of the newly-established, independent Crosstown Concerts, set up by former Metropolis Music directors Paul Hutton and Conal Dodds. Their first outing as Crosstown was the huge homecoming concert for Massive Attack on Clifton Downs, as part of an all-day event that’s now evolved into fully-fledged annual festival The Downs. After more than 15 years in the industry, it might look as though Dan has traded 1600 capacity shows at O2 Academy for stage managing The Downs to 30,000 people, however Dan still very much has his feet (and ears) on the ground when it comes to his day-to-day role, and a big part of Crosstown Concerts’ MO is working with artists from the very beginning of their careers. ‘We still do the small stuff, I’m still keen to throw my ear in and say “I think this band sounds really cool, we should be promoting them and putting them on in The Louisiana”. You don’t get to being a big scale
promoter without building acts up to that level. It’s all about finding them when they’re small and finding their audiences for them – that’s the job of a promoter. You find artists you like and you put them in front of people that you think are going to like
There are loads of us working in this industry and we want to keep that money here them and, if you get it right, you end up looking after big bands. ‘I don’t think I would get as much enjoyment out of what I do, or certainly have as much input into the company as a whole, if I was working for a nonindependent promoter, so I feel really lucky that I’ve been able to carry on working for a small team. It means that you’ve all got to work really hard, because we’re still a small business, but we are doing stuff at a big level.’ Although Dan is fortunate to still work as part of a close knit team, there is an unavoidable stress factor that comes with dealing with bigger capacities, bigger infrastructure and bigger budgets. Though, of course, the rewards and feel good factor can be much, much greater. ‘Stress wise, I have certain points in the year where I feel like I can’t cope and my list never gets any smaller even though I’m crossing lots of stuff off it, but the payoffs are more rewarding. It is difficult to stop and take notice sometimes, which is something I have to force myself to do every now and then. ‘I still really love the buzz of working on events, I think that’s something that I’ve held on to from working in venues, so I like being on the ground and making things happen at events. Usually when you’re a promoter, you kind of do everything before the show and make sure that everyone working on the show has got what they need and then you’re at show as a punter. Whereas I still like to do the stage management thing or looking after the artists. ‘I would say that the trade off is that you get to experience these massive, massive highs but for a much shorter period of time and you don’t really get that sense of completion on things, because you’re always on to the next thing. But it is very rewarding when things work out and you get to go to a sold out gig that you’ve been working on, you’ve got a beer in your hand and everyone’s happy. The band are rocking it, the venue is full, there are no issues – that’s a nice feeling.’ It’s important to note that Dan hasn’t just been killing it on a personal level, he’s been part of a team of individuals that have changed the very landscape of Bristol’s music industry. The Downs was the first event to make use of the sprawling, central space for 15 years, and Bristol Sounds (formerly Bristol Summer Series) brought Lloyds Amphitheatre into use as a city centre concert venue – a blueprint that has been successfully taken up by Colston Hall and MJR’s Skyline Series among others, between them bringing in concerts from huge names that would otherwise pass Bristol by. This June, Bristol Sounds is bringing us shows from Bloc Party, Tom Misch, Elbow, The Cat Empire and Cinematic Orchestra – all names that are otherwise simply too big to play outside of a festival field in Bristol. The whole concept has given people a chance to see these big names at a price point that is affordable, without having to shell out for a day ticket to a festival or put themselves up in a hotel in another city. ‘Something I learned from being at the Academy is that you’d see all these tours routed and Bristol was being missed out. There are a lot of young people
here, there are a lot of creative people here, there’s money around and people want stuff to do. The level of culture here compared to other cities of its size, Bristol punches well above its weight. But what I noticed was that you’d only really get those bands that were on the way up, once they got to a decent level, there wasn’t anywhere for them to play. ‘One of the things that naturally came out of that was thinking about how we could utilise other spaces to bring bigger acts to Bristol. Using that central location and putting an infrastructure in there – because you can fit more than two thousand people in there, which is what Colston Hall will be when it’s reopened – it gives people like Tom Misch a place to play. We’re not the only people that put shows on in that space now, Bristol Sounds proved the worth of that space almost instantly. ‘I think it’s really important to try and utilise city centre spaces for things that bring cultural capital to the city. I think it’s really, really important that these events use local suppliers. We make sure that with any of our events, all the staging, all the lighting, all the audio, all the staff, all the stock, fences, toilets – everything that we use – is as much as possible hired from local suppliers. ‘We understand that it’s really important in terms of, number one, a cultural offering to make Bristol appear like an attractive city for people to come and visit and, number two, to give people work. There are loads of us working in this industry and we want to keep that money here. That’s what keeps Bristol being able to punch above its weight culturally.’ Similarly, The Downs – which Crosstown Concerts run in partnership with Team Love – is much more than big names in a central space. In its first instance, it served as the homecoming show for Massive Attack, who hadn’t had a space to play in Bristol for 13 years. A huge amount of thought is put into lineup curation with a view to representing diverse, boundarypushing artists, alongside lesser-known acts that some of Bristol’s most experienced promoters believe deserve your attention. There’s also the Information Stage, which invites high profile guest speakers to talk about a range of important social and political issues, with previous guests including Ken Loach and Akala. Heading into its third year this September, The Downs’ first wave lineup announcement has blown previous years’ out of the water. Main stage acts include Lauryn Hill, Grace Jones, IDLES, Neneh Cherry and Arrested Development, while the likes of Loyle Carner and High Contrast headline the second stage. Plus, Dan assures us, a wealth of rising talent and a strong Bristol contingent. ‘Lauryn Hill, Grace Jones and IDLES – there aren’t going to be many festival bills with those three names on! It feels really Bristol, it feels like we’re moving in a direction that means that we can book different types of artists. We’ve all been really keen to diversify the event, we want to feel like this is an event that we can bring any type of artist to. ‘The USP behind The Downs is that it’s two stages that are curated by people living and working in Bristol and there is a consciousness behind the event as a whole. We want to keep it green, we want solid food offerings that are all local, we want good beers on draft, we want the price to be fair, we want there to be areas for families to enjoy. We want to have a discussion about relevant social concerns – that’s what the arts should engage with and that’s something that we’re going to keep pushing.’
