ALABAMA 3: ACOUSTIC

H2O are one of the defining bands in the long history of New York Hardcore and would later define the term “melodic hardcore” commonly referred to today. In the pre-internet world of hardcore and punk, H2O were the band that blended the heavily-tattooed, unbridled rage of New York bands like The Cro-Mags and Agnostic Front, with the punk melodies of bands like The Descendents and Token Entry.

The group achieved international fame when the producers of hit TV series The Sopranos chose the track “Woke Up This Morning” for the show’s opening credits. Since then the party’s never stopped, bringing their unique blend of country-rock-blues-techno around the world for years to come. This month they head to The Fleece for a special acoustic, unplugged show. Stripped back, party vibes for those wanting to dance.

NYTA hails not from the Big Apple, but from Bristol. His real name is Mensah Anderson, who is also the seasoned producer that you probably know in his dub carnation simply as Mensah.

Kagoule are one of the most exciting bands to come out of Nottingham in years. The prodigious teenagers have previously released a wealth of singles and are now ready to unleash their hugely impressive debut ‘Urth’, due for release on August 21, 2015.

The NYTA guise focuses on being a fresh outlet for his 120 – 130bpm 80s Electro, House & Techno influenced tracks & creations. The ‘New York Transit Authority’ name was first adopted for a split 12” release with Conqueror (Redlight) on Redlight’s Lobster Boy label last year. His side was a slinky, 808 house number entitled ‘Off The Traxx’, which deservedly found its way into FACT’s 50 best tracks of the year and was caned by a wide range of top DJs across the globe – including Joe Goddard, Loefah, Redlight, Boddika, Jackmaster, Disclosure, Pearson Sound, Benji B & Giles Peterson to name just a few. NYTA has already proven himself as a talent on the decks with sets across the world and two exclusives mixes: one for Dazed & Confused and ‘the one’ for FACT mag that finished in the top 20 best FACT mixes of the year

BAND

The album not only belies their years, but proves they are one of the most exciting young bands in the UK. The album is produced by Ross Orton (Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A, The Fall) and Pete Fletcher (Childhood) and opening single ‘Gush’ has already amassed over 230,000 plays on Soundcloud. The band have consistently impressed live, sharing stages with acts including The Wytches, Iceage, METZ, Sebadoh and Drenge, as well as performing at Glastonbury Festival for BBC Introducing. As well as amassing a dedicated fanbase, they have been critically lauded by the likes of Rolling Stone, NME, Guardian, while receiving plays from the likes of BBC Radio 6Music and BBC Radio 1. 1.) What have you learned today? To wash the hand towel more often. Man, it can really stink sometimes that thing. 2.) Favourite track of all time? Ivor Cutler - Baby Sits. It’s a song about a baby sat upon a rusty high chair. When its father’s back is turned, it flips its carrots to the floor. A tale that will tickle even the most passionless of hearts. 3.) Worst chart song at the moment? ZZ Top - Chartreuse 4.) Who are your top 3 acts right now? Far too many amazing bands/acts out there right now to pick 3. I was at this gig the other week that will stick with me for a long time. Enablers + Kogumaza played The Maze in Nottingham and I don’t think I’ve ever been so still for so long before. It consumed me. I think I might have cried at one point. Seriously check those two bands out. 5.) If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Probably some kind of Cleric. I would focus my time on learning protection and healing spells. Start up a website and cast blessings or curses upon whoever you wish for a reasonable fee. All that I require is a photo and your personal details!

6.) What was the last book you read? Terry Pratchett - Guards! Guards! A friend lent me this excellent book to give me a break from the wordy sci fi hole I fell into. It’s so damn good. Never has a book made me chuckle this much before. Check out his Discworld series. 7.) Favourite thing on TV? How It’s Made. Have you seen the one where they make pretzels!? 8.) Are you afraid of anything? Loud noises 9.) Tell us something people don’t know about you... I’ve managed to make a bag of fruit jellies last me a month now. 10.) What are you doing tomorrow? Moaning that there’s no milk in the fridge, take a small bite of a fruit jelly, looking at amps I can’t afford, staring at a blank page and wish it was full of new lyrics, and a gig at the Shacklewell Arms for their birthday party playing with some great bands - Boneyards and Sex Hands. Been looking forward to this one for a while!

REWIND // BEST OF LAST MONTH

Geeorge Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic

Funk pioneers George Clinton and the phenomenal Parliament and Funkadelic delivered a heap load of P-Funk last month at Bristol’s O2 Academy. The quirky performer accompanied by ParliamentFunkadelic collective, is recognised for bringing the sounds of the funk-fuelled future and sometimes even a spaceship to the stage. Back in the 1970s when the collective were at their peak, you’d expect to find a whole new world on stage, from colourful and eccentric costumes, to marathon sets lasting up to five hours where the musicians would seamlessly jam on stage. Bristol’s performance may have lasted two and a half hours in comparison to their five-six hour heyday, but the real funk sounds and playful musical tangents meant that 40 years on, the P-Funk passion remains the same. Opening the show, Clinton and the musicians crowded the stage to wet the crowd’s appetite and provide new material from 2014’s release Shake The Gate. It was a unique experience to witness a full circle of generations of music on stage at once, as they infused together old and new with recent releases like Meow featuring live emcees with a funk twist. Hip hop beats pulsated through the venue and took audience members on a detour through their more recent work, before delving straight in to the golden era of funk. The marathon set delivered classics that exhibited every era of George Clinton; from his futuristic and electrifying groove shaking sounds of Dr Funkenstein, to his 80s Atomic Dog years. Highlights included witnessing beloved anthems like Knee Deep, and Give Up The Funk performed live on stage, plus the breath taking guitar solo by Funkadelic’s Dwayne Blackbird, for the opening number for Maggot Brain.

On top of rocking out to their psychedelic funk, the musicians provided elements of their earlier far-out shows in the 70s, with a reprise of on stage character- long nosed ‘Sir Nose DeVoid’. The white fur dressed character with a long nose made several acrobatic appearances on stage, often bringing a gaggle of ladies with him to join in the party on stage. George Clinton and the magnificently talented ParliamentFunkadelic collective performed to an immaculate level, right down to modestly bowing after every applause they so rightfully deserved. So whether you enjoyed sounds as crisp as vinyl performed before your very eyes, or some of your favourite Funkadelic dialogue like “free your mind and your ass will follow” spouted live on stage, everyone left the venue satisfied in the knowledge that they had just witnessed musical history come to life on stage.

There’s something pretty special about meeting a musician at the start of their journey, when they harbour an ambitious energy with their fresh sound and ideas fuelled with passion. Local singer/song writer and producer Henry Green is an artist at the very beginning of this musical adventure and Nitelife caught up with him to get an insight on breaking into the mainstream. The 19-year-old musician from Malmesbury who creates a unique blend of indie, folk and electronica, has been celebrating the success of his recent single Barcelona, whilst eagerly awaiting the June release of his debut EP Slow on Akira Records. With a buzz circulating as we anticipate the release of his debut EP, whispers and nods imply this musician is set to be the ‘next best thing’. With that in mind, we felt it was only right to find out- who is Henry Green?

I want to bridge the gap between guitar music and electronic music As I sat down with the artist, his calm and friendly exterior distracted us from the fact he’s relatively new to the music scene, as he began to modestly describe how he got his first guitar as a Christmas present when he was 8-years-old. The guitar wasn’t picked up an awful lot for the first 4 years, but as he grew up, Henry told us how he began to teach himself guitar with aid of a few guitar lessons before confidently writing his own music. “I started writing songs seriously when I was about 16, and then I found my sound a couple of years later when I started to incorporate electronic sounds to my acoustic based writing”.

At 16, Henry had already made a splash in the water with his music and was getting compared to likes of Bon Iver from a single released with Night Talk Records. “Now I’ve picked up the electric guitar it’s changed a little bit, but I think the dreaminess and space of it is still similar to Bon Iver” he described as we sat slurping our drinks. But what was so striking about this artist was how he never lost his humble outlook – even when discussing such a respectable comparison. Fast forward three years and Henry Green is set to release his first EP titled, Slow following the positive response to the single Barcelona. “This is my first official EP release that’s not just an online demo, so I’m really quite proud. Working with producer Josh Crocker was a great experience.” Quietly confident with the EP, Henry described how “each song’s quite different” which is what he’s excited about most. The artist’s blended sound of indie, folk and electronic is a pretty unique cluster of sub-genres to get stuck into. When asked what attracted him to merge the acoustic and digital sound, Henry positively replied: “I listen to a lot of different music and I want to bridge the gap between guitar music and electronic music. Both hit you on very different levels, but at the same time in a similar way and I’m trying to find somewhere in the middle”. Whilst we were talking about bridging the gap of genres, you could read Henry’s excitement and curiosity about the merging of sounds in his music as he steadily continued to explore the reasoning behind the music he creates. “You connect so much with music emotionally, especially when you see a band play live, but then you see a band or producer who uses electronics, it hits you in a completely different level. I think I’m that happy medium.” As we continued to talk, I grew curious to find out what artists have inspired him to follow the sound he makes today. “I think

the band Foals were a turning point for me. A friend of mine showed me their album Total Life Forever and I just thought it was incredible. It’s still guitar based but it’s a lot more interesting. “Last year I got into sampling and that’s something that really interests me now, but I still like to write around a guitar because it’s the instrument I know best.” I know a lot of artists like to keep their festival circuit cards close to their chest this time of year, but I couldn’t help but ask if the singer/song writer had any gigs lined up for the summer. Henry was confident to say he aims to tour with the release of his EP before the festival season kicks off in full swing, whilst boasting the exciting line up of festivals he has booked, including Wychwood, Great Escape and the Malmesbury local Boondocks Festival. Judging from the sounds of his jam-packed calendar for the year, the combination of release dates and gigs lined up shows this artist has truly hit the ground running for 2015. After chatting with Henry, I left the bar with the inkling feeling that this won’t be the last I hear of the artist. Just from listening his current release, you can hear a true quality and gift this musician holds. Roni Size

When we heard rumblings of a new Reprazent album to hit shelves later this year, we took a trip to Roni Size’s studio, just as he was putting the finishing touches to the new record.

“There’s always pressure to be progressive. Just try to remain true to yourself. As long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and say that you stuck to your guns.

We were given a sneak peek of a few tracks, and trust us when we say you won’t be disappointed if you catch Roni and the Reprazent crew at this month’s Love Saves the Day festival in Eastville Park.

“A compromise here and a compromise there, but the core of what I do is still drum and bass.

We don’t throw this word around lightly, but Roni Size is a drum and bass legend. One of the key originators of the ever talked-about ‘Bristol Sound’, Roni Size and Reprazent helped put Bristol on the map when they won the Mercury Prize for their 1997 platinum-selling album New Forms. The massively iconic Brown Paper Bag is still pumped through sound systems around the globe, and generations of DnB producers cite him as a big influence. “I prefer to be called a pioneer,” he tells us. “Being called a legend is an absolute privilege, but I’d rather see myself as someone who is more of a pioneer, because I’m still trying to conquer the mountain. “In my lifetime, when I deserve it, I’d love to become a legend of the scene – who wouldn’t?” Roni is well on target, winning best EP at last year’s Bass Music Awards for his solo EP, Size Matters.

“I love the beats, I love anything to do with the basslines and to do with hip hop and the b-boy generation – that’s what Bristol brought to the table and I’m fortunate enough to have been in the city from when it started. I could tell you so many stories. “Every time I look out this window, I have a memory in every single location. From the age of 7-years-old, sitting here and being able to hear the bass coming from St Paul’s Carnival. The breeding ground of the Bristol Sound was St Paul’s Carnival. “I was so lucky to have this bird’s eye view of it all kicking off around me. I was that annoying kid at the decks asking the DJs, ‘what’s that record? What’s that record?’” Few musicians to come out of Bristol since the late 80s and 90s are comparable to the golden inner circle of Smith & Mighty, Portishead, Massive Attack and the members of Reprazent. We asked Roni what is was about that era that facilitated such great music:

“Winning awards is when you realise you have an audience and they want you to do good and they support you. It’s like a lift–up. It’s like a leg-up over the wall.”

“It was a time when it was unaffordable. So you had to know someone who had the equipment and who would then let you use it, or you would have to have quite a lot of money to be able to sit down every day and twiddle buttons, because studio time back then was a lot of money.

With such a distinctive Roni Size sound, we wondered whether there is additional pressure on the producer to be seen as progressive, or to move away from a sound that so many others are using to inspire their own.

“I think the difference between now and then is that when you had that studio time, you made the most of it. You went in there and you knew that you had six hours, you’re going to get six tunes done, and you made sure they all sound great.

“It’s easy to say, oh it was this party, or all these crews, but it’s also accessibility. Nowadays, it’s affordable. You get a laptop, load it up and you’re away, you don’t even need a studio anymore. “

In my lifetime, when I deserve it, I’d love to become a legend of the scene – who wouldn’t?

“One of my only gripes is that sometimes people keep things a bit too simple. I like to be tested; I like to think, ‘how did they do that?’ I like to hear music I think I couldn’t easily make.” Fans can hold their hopes high for the new Reprazent album then, with the “producers’ producer” clearly still wanting to challenge conventions and push the boundaries of drum and bass. “It’s a great record; it’s got Onallee and Dynamite on the album. It’s called Do it for the Masses and we’re hoping to release it at the end of August, latest.” Do it for the Masses will be put out on Roni Size’s new label, Mansion Sounds which he launched in 2014. “Full Cycle had such a legacy, with Die and Suv and D Product, we just wanted to call it a day for that era.

That’s not to say he thinks the bass music scene is oversaturated. “I love it - the more the better. I love all things bass related. I think Hannah Wants is bringing something to the table.

“Mansion Sounds is based on having big ideas and big sounds. There’s a saying: ‘you have a mansion of possibilities’. That’s where it comes from. Different rooms, different ideas.”

Finally, we asked Roni about being added to the Love Saves the Day 2015 bill as a special guest headliner. “It’s so nerve-wracking doing anything in Bristol. You’ve got all your family and friends there, but at the same time it’s the best gig in the world for me. No gig is better than coming home. “I could not wait to be on the bill. I’ve been to Love Saves the Day before and I thought, ‘I want to be a part of this’. And I’ve got loads of good memories at Eastville Park. “We’ll play some of the old stuff and some of the new stuff, we’ve just got a show that we enjoy and we like.”

Patrick Somers is the promotions manager for Thekla, arguably Bristol’s most famous venue. “It’s hard to forget a boat!” he says. “But we don’t rest on our laurels. We keep pushing ourselves to make sure we’re putting on good nights. “ Over the past few years, huge breakthrough acts like Calvin Harris, Florence and the Machine, Two Door Cinema Club, The xx, and Ellie Goulding have boarded the iconic ship. They’ve certainly got the attention of NME, shortlisted for and winning Best Small Venue in the South West multiple times; and they’ve just invested in a completely new sound system that will come into play this summer. Patrick started out putting on nights in his hometown of Derby when he was 16. “I have no musical talent,” he tells us. “I can’t play an instrument, so that’s why I started putting on nights. Whilst all my friends were playing in bands, I got myself involved in music this way.” He moved to Bristol a few years later and applied for a bar job at Thekla, with clear-cut intentions of working his way into the promotions side of things.

“I was working in an office as a graphic designer wearing a tie and I hated it! The 9-5 thing is not my bag. “I started out in the bar and I just made sure whenever someone was leaving, I was in the right place to work my way up. “Working in live music is something I’ve always had an interest in, so to be able to do it full time is amazing. “One of the best things about my job is seeing new bands develop and then get really big. “We did Florence and the Machine here to about 60 people. She did a Thursday, midnight show and then she played at the Louisiana to about 80 people not long after. Then I think she didn’t play again until she got massive!” It’s not just running the events at Thekla that is keeping Patrick busy, he’s also heavily involved in the DHP Family– a much larger machine working behind the scenes to put on live music and club nights in multiple venues across the UK. DHP owns six venues, including Thekla, as well as Nottingham’s famous Rock City. But they also work with other venues to curate a hefty programme to cater for the cities’ music lovers. Some of the Bristol venues working with DHP are Exchange, The Louisiana, Crofters Rights, and O2 Academy. Patrick estimates that on top of the Thekla shows and club nights, he helps put on about 250 shows at other venues across the South West a year. “My responsibilities as promotions manager are quite broad. A lot of time is spent on emails which is not the most fun, but then in evenings I get to see a lot of live gigs.

“I also work with Dot–to-Dot festival and Bristol Harbour Festival. Working with local, smaller bands is something I really enjoy – getting to see them play to decent sized crowds.” Dot-to-Dot festival celebrates its 10th birthday this month and is one of the original city centre, multi-venue festivals – an idea that seems to have exploded in recent years. “It is format that people seem to engage with. It’s nice to be walking around the city and see everybody doing the same thing as you. And if it rains, it’s a bonus because you’re inside.” The kind of environment Patrick is surrounded lends itself to rock’n’roll type situations, so we asked him to share a couple of shocking stories with us: “We did a secret show with Babyshambles once. They were doing a Saturday club night and we hadn’t announced it, but it leaked online so the boat was rammed. It was the same day Pete Doherty had gotten out of a rehab stint, but he was actually very nice and very polite. “I did see Har Mar Superstar having sex with a groupie though. “I love working here. As much as the whole DHP ‘family’ thing is a bit cringe, it is like that. I can’t see myself moving from here.”
