Thrilogy
Beans on Toast
Lee Pattison AKA Thrilogy is no stranger to the Bristol scene; travelling from Surrey to Bristol in his teens to rave at Lakota was just the start of his love for the city. He soon moved to Bristol to go to UWE and was able to buy his first set of decks; belt drive Technics from Derry Brownson (of EMF fame). A few years later he started the infamous PLAY nights booking Konrad Black to James Zabiela to X-Press 2 to Radio Slave. Alongside this, his DJ duo with Grayson Shipley, Deepgroove took off, winning them a DJ Mag award, MUZIK Magazine Awards and gigs around the globe; regularly playing the main room at We Love Space with the likes of Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Paul Woolford. On the production front, Deepgroove graced the labels of Rekids, Underwater, Klang, MBF, Alter Ego, Harthouse and Cocoon; and under Idiotproof with Jamie Anderson, they remixed artists from Armand Van Helden to Cevin Fisher. Forward on to now and his new Thrilogy moniker is ready to take off with releases on Futureboogie, OM Records and many more in the pipeline. Lee Pattison is one to watch! Get his Heaven EP, out now on WOLF Music Recordings. Upcoming Shows: November-January @ Southbank, London. Residency at BUMP Rollerdisco with Severino, WOLF Music, Alfresco Disco, Shapes + more.
“Drunk folk singer” Beans on Toast’s original cheap and easy English attitude has got him to where he is today. Ten years in the game and Beans has built up something of an underground following around the world, and is now ramming out festival fields and tents on the UK circuit and constantly touring new and foreign land. This year alone he’s played shows on rooftops in Cape Town, tropical islands in the Barbados, folk festivals in Canada and covered over 10,000 miles in the USA. He also toured the fringes on the UK in the wake of the terrible result at this year’s election, taking in the mood of the country by visiting Harlow, Preston, Chester and the like. He has, of course, got songs all about these travels. The latest Beans on Toast album, Rolling Up The Hill is his most creative record to date and it’s an album all about friendship, travel and art. It’s also about drinking, protesting and growing older in these strange modern times. Don’t miss him at the Marble Factory this November. Upcoming Shows: November 26, Marble Factory
THOSE QUESTIONS...
THOSE QUESTIONS...
DJ / PRODUCER
Singer / songwriter
1. What have you learned today? “Wise sayings often fall on barren ground, but a kind word is never thrown away.” Admittedly, I did read that in a fortune cookie — does that count? Also, my friend Lindsay has given me some eBay lessons.
6. What was the last book you read? Alex James, ‘All Cheeses Great & Small’. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Rick Stein, Luke Nguyen
2. Favourite track of all time? Chemical Brothers, ‘Out Of Control’. At 8am we used to lie on the lounge floor in the middle of a pair of Mackie speakers and play it really loud. It’s euphoric in the drop.
8. Are you afraid of anything? FOMO… only kidding, The dark/ ghosts/ horror films/ the runny juice bit if you don’t shake a ketchup bottle/ the noise the ketchup makes if it’s not full enough/ mayonnaise (sometimes) and some plastic food containers… So a few things…
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Ethyl Meatplow, ‘Queenie’ (my new Thrilogy edit of it).
9. Tell us something people don’t often know about you... I played cricket for England Schools when I was younger, bowling off spin.
4. Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? Roman Flugel has always consistently amazed me both as a DJ and producer. Leon Vynehall is making some heavy tracks and Paranoid London make great acid.
10. What are you doing tomorrow? Feeding my fish, then meeting up with Maxxi Soundsystem to finish the follow-up to our last WEP whilst eating sweets and chili-¬based snacks.
1. What have you learned today? I’m not long out of bed, so not a huge amount yet today. That said I’d like to think that the lessons you can learn from all this travelling / touring are some kind of deep down knowledge that you might not actually be aware you’re learning. But maybe that’s bullshit…
6. What was the last book you read? Michael Chabon, Telegraph Avenue (it was amazing). 7. Favourite thing on TV? The off button.
2. Favourite track of all time? Todd Snider, ‘Ballard of the Devil’s Backbone Tavern’.
8. Are you afraid of anything? Climate change, war and the future of the human race in general.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Canned Heat, ‘Going up Country’.
9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I once worked as a bin man.
4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Skinny Lister, Truckstop Honeymoon, Ezra Furman.
10. What are you doing tomorrow? Playing in Spokane, a city in Washington. I’m on a 7-week tour of the USA with Frank Turner and Skinny Lister.
5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Probably pulling pints.
5. If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? A cricketer or ski instructor?

INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
45’S
Bristol party band the 45’s present a big middle finger to anyone who says covers bands are a fob off. 45’s reimagine soul, rock and blues classics. Their gumptious covers of Long Tall Sally, Hound Dog and I Feel Good, for example, are often set to original riffs and easily distinguishable as 45’s remasterings. It’s not surprising to learn that each member respectively belongs to a regular-gigging, original material band. Bassist Jimmy Curry plays bass for South West acoustic folk four-piece Peter and the Harmonics, and drummer Des Rogers and lead singer and guitarist, Bobby Anderson make up one half of modern rock ‘n’ rollers, Yes Rebels.
terms, when, after injuring himself playing football, his school friend Alan Akehurst taught him to play guitar. Together they formed the beginnings of Fortune Drive, who would later go on to sign a record deal, release an album and tour Europe, before being dropped prematurely from their label. “Out of the ashes of Fortune Drive”, Bobby formed Yes Rebels, a guitar-fueled rock band to fly in the face of the producer-led music that was now dominating the industry. At the same time, along with Des and good friend Jimmy, he started experimenting with the 45’s. “We formed 45’s as an outlet and as a hobby. Being in an original band, that whole struggle to get recognition, all that jazz, sometimes you forget that it’s supposed to be fun. You start a band because you enjoy playing music and you enjoy hanging out with your friends and having a couple of beers afterwards.
People know the songs, but they dig the way we play them
Frontman Bobby Anderson doesn’t play up to his blueblooded soul heritage. As the son of Young Disciples’ Carleen Anderson and grandson of Bobby Byrd, founder of James Brown and the Famous Flames, it would be easy to say he was born to perform, but Bobby wasn’t always interested in music.
“Weirdly enough, because I was always surrounded by it with my mum and her parents, it was actually something I didn’t want to do. I spent my summer holidays from school on tour with my mum, so I was sick of it before I even started.” Bobby discovered his love of performing later on his own
“We play covers, but we get to do what we want with them because we are doing it for no other reason than to enjoy ourselves. “We just got really popular over the years for whatever reason. People know the songs, but they dig the way we play them. And it’s still fun, it’s not stressful.” Bobby is a natural frontman with a big pair of lungs. His soulful,
LOCAL TALENT // 27
stony vocals are hypnotically pervasive — you won’t find anyone standing around chatting while the 45’s are playing. “In early rehearsals for Fortune Drive, no one really knew how to play, so we played stupid loud, and I had to sing stupid loud over the top of them. And the guys were like, ‘you’ve got an alright voice, man.’”
“I think it’s probably going to happen, to be honest. We write a lot of riffs that we can’t put to a cover we want to do.
Original material could well be on the cards for 45’s
45’s have garnered a good following in Bristol over the last few years. And for all those wondering, original material could well be on the cards for 45’s. “A lot of places we play, the first thing they ask is, “do you do your own stuff?’ “Sometimes I write a riff and I think — do I use it for Yes Rebels? Or keep it as 45’s and maybe, just maybe down the line drop some original material…
“We got these four sketches already there that, if we wanted to, we could get together in the next few weeks.
“But it’s a double-edged sword. If we went out as 45’s now and did only original material, then people would be very confused! But who knows, we’ll see.”

ANDY C
Nitelife are lucky to score some great names to chat to, but this month it was an honour to speak to this legendary drum n bass name. Pioneering in the scene and probably the first name to spring to mind when you think of drum n bass, Andy C - AKA Andrew Clarke has been at the forefront of the DnB scene for over 20 years, including his successful co-founded label RAM Records that’s home of the likes of the internationally acclaimed artists like Chase and Status and Sub Focus.
Do you have any pre-set or post-set rituals? Pre-set is to get as much sleep as possible, but post set is definitely to chill out after. This autumn I just did the last show of my European tour in Milan and that was a four hour set. I’ve basically been doing four hour sets every Friday and Saturday for the last six weeks, so I’ve done my ground work and now I’m ready for the UK tour coming up.
I personally prefer DJing with vinyl turntables because it’s what I started doing. It’s what I’ve always done so it helps me enjoy the process of DJing more
We caught up with the pioneering DnB DJ/producer after his 6am start in the studio to finish off a few tracks before his Bristol appearance in Motion this November. In the time we were talking, Andy C talked about the success of RAM Records, the memories of the nineties in Bristol during its drum n bass heyday and what’s next in the pipeline for the internationally renowned DJ. You’ll be coming to Bristol this November for a 6 hour set. Why do you choose to do such lengthy sets? I love DJing and I was finding myself getting frustrated doing short sets because you can express so much more in a longer set. They gradually grew from an hour, to two then three hours and eventually I just decided just do it all night. The first time I did it was a bit daunting, but it was such an amazing experience and liberating in the sense you’re not clock watching and instead you can just go with the vibe of the crowd. You end up forming a great bond with the crowd because they’re there with you all night.
Do you still use vinyl in your sets, if so why do you think it’s so important? I use Technics and vinyl controllers but I use Traktor to DJ with. I personally prefer DJing with vinyl turntables because it’s what I started doing. It’s what I’ve always done so it helps me enjoy the process of DJing more. Your turntables must feel like an extension to yourself by now you’ve been doing it so long… It feels like it! The good thing is, I don’t know whether it’s a psychological thing, but I could be in the worst frame of mind, or feel ill with a cold or whichever, but as soon as I get myself behind a set of decks it just all evaporates. Do you still mix for leisure or only for work? Oh yeah, I try to mix at home as much as time allows. I mean obviously today being in the studio, the mixing has got to take a back seat, but it’s good to every now and again to lock myself in the studio and have a good mix. It’s good to enjoy it because you find new stuff, otherwise sometimes if you just play out all the time, you get into some sort of comfort zone of only
playing a certain batch of records. Playing the decks at home enables me to discover new records. RAM Records has been going for over 20 years now and in the process has won a ton of awards with their huge roster of artists. Is there anything you listen out for when you’re choosing who to add to your label? There’s not really a set criteria because if you look at the artists we’ve been promoting this year you can see a lot of difference between artists. June Miller for example had their debut album out which is an incredible piece of work, but on the other side of the scale we’ve got Audio who’s coming out with absolute slammer after slammer of blow your head up kind of music. Then, to completely switch it we’ve got Bensley from Canada, where each song tells a story and the musicality in it is unbelievable. So I guess with all of that, there’s not a defined criteria, but there’s got to be quality. I think we want it to stand up for its own merits, rather than filling a gap. If we started to say ‘that’ll work, we’ll just sign them’ then I don’t think that’s the right way to go about it. It’s down to intuition. What’s your favourite release to come out of RAM Records? I think I’m incredibly proud of the obvious ones like the debut album Speed of Sound which was our first album back in the nineties which was a milestone for us and a really exciting time because we were at the start of our journey. Then you’ve got the obvious successes with Sub Focus and the mad and incredible excitement around Chase and Status seems to snowball daily. There are a lot of real proud achievements to look back on, and I guess one day when we’re down the pub having a drink we might look back on it all and be proud! But really, we like to look forward, we like to look towards the future and we don’t really like to dwell too much on the past.
PREVIEW // 29
Where do you see the future of the label heading? We strive to make sure the label survives because the markets are constantly changing. I mean we’ve gone from vinyl, to CD, download and now we’re in the streaming world and going through all these changes really does take a massive recalibration of what is required of a record label. One thing that’s in the heart of that is your artists and their music and the aim to promote them and be a platform for them. So as long as the artists keep giving us the great music then we know that the label is always going to go from strength to strength. It’s reliant on the music. But I think that drum n bass is ingrained in different cultures all over the world now and it’s not a fad and we’re enjoying riding the wave of it that’s for sure. In 2012 we witnessed your ‘Andy C Alive’ VJ. Would you ever consider taking it a step further and trying something else new like forming a live band set like other drum n bass DJ’s? I guess it would all depend on the music and how I wanted to express it. When we were getting the ‘Alive’ project together, we wanted to try something new and create a show you could take on the road and take to main stages at festivals, but I still wanted it to remain focused around DJing. I think for me personally it would be weird if it was suddenly me up on stage playing keys with a violinist and bass player. My thing is always going to be based around the DJing because that’s what I’m all about. But never say never! Bristol was considered a pioneering capital for DnB in the early nineties. Did you come to Bristol much when all of this was happening? Oh yeah, I’ve always been coming to Bristol. I remember being down the music house cutting dub plates and one day Bryan G walks in and he’s got a DAT and he says “Andy, I want you to
listen to these and cut these tunes on dub plates. It’s by this new guy I’ve got, called Roni Size, he’s from Bristol and his music is sick”. That was my first introduction to Bristol jungle, drum n bass. To be honest, it was a magical time, all the guys like Roni, Krust and DJ Die used to come down to the music house and we became very good friends. There’s just some vibrancy in Bristol that I can’t explain. A lot of my mates in the scene actually left London to move to Bristol because it had better vibes! But Bristol has always been like that musically and culturally. There’s a sort of free spirit in Bristol that’s unique and it’s always a great place to come and DJ. Has the digitalisation of music sharing made you miss going to the cutting house? Oh yeah. At the time I’m not gonna lie it could be an absolute pain in the arse, but it was at the same time because people like myself and DJ Hype would go down there every Thursday religiously. We used to go round people’s houses in the morning and collect the DAT’s because back then it was completely different. It was a community because you had to be friends with people because sending a tune over the internet didn’t exist back then. The only way to get the music was to meet people face to face and form relationships, so that part of it was fun. The not so fun part was getting down there at midday and Grooverider, Jumpin’ Jack Frost were all in the queue ahead of you cutting what feels like three million dub plates, and then Jah Shaka would show up and he’s cutting a hundred dub plates! Sometimes we’d be down there for twelve to fourteen hours at a time, but the
beauty of that was you got to know everybody. There was a real sense of community. One of the things I really miss about it was that fresh tune coming in over the sound system from an unknown producer, and it would play whilst everyone else might be hanging around having a chat and everyone would turn around and be like “what is that tune?!” and then boom, instantly that person had status on the scene. Everyone would cut that tune and then play it that weekend and that was the beginning of somebodies career. That’s probably the most major thing that’s lost in music culture now. Finally, what’s next in the pipelines for Andy C? I’ve got two tunes I’ve got to finish today and mastering tomorrow, that will hopefully be coming out in a couple of weeks. Then I have a new single coming out in the start of 2016 and then I have a whole host of things that are on my ‘to finish’ list. I rediscovered the fire recently for being in the studio. For a few years it was literally just DJing, so now I’m back in there solidly and it’s fun because you can get your demo and then go and play it in the weekend and nobody will know that tune is you so it’s a great way to test the waters.
The only way to get the music was to meet people face to face and form relationships, so that part of it was fun

30 // THE INFLUENCERS
THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENCES WITH
TOM PAINE Tom Paine Age: 35 Job title: Co-Director, Team Love
Local promoter Tom Paine can be held responsible for some of the best additions to Bristol’s party scene over the last decade. Tom moved to Bristol to study politics in 2001 and Tom fell in love with the city. Less than 15 years later and he’s co-director of production and events giants Team Love. He also runs two successful bars and helped to launch Motion nightclub, which was recently voted the 24th best club in the world by DJ Mag.
and The Love Inn on Stokes Croft, Team Love also work behind the scenes producing other people’s events, including Arcadia Bristol in Queen Square this September; stages at Glastonbury and Secret Garden Party, and See No Evil festival. They’ve also just opened the doors of their new city centre bar, The Small Horse Inn and are preparing to launch a new Croatian festival, Love International next summer. Hardly surprising then that Tom has recently had to take a step back from Motion. “About a year and a half ago, Team Love got too big and I had to take a step back from Motion. Which I was really sad about, because it’s been a major part in everything that I’ve done in
“We still play to our strengths, it’s still really good music, good drinks and good people, just in the centre of the city.
“There was Mr Wolf’s in the centre and nothing else. Now you’ve got loads of really good places, Mr Wolfs has got bigger and moved, there’s really good restaurants like Pata Negra and the Ox, you’ve got place like Milk Thistle and Christmas Steps all in that centre space. It feels like it’s a nice place to be again.
After a few successful years at The Tube, Tom left to take on his next big project: launching Motion nightclub with friend and local promoter Rag Satguru (of Just Jack).
“Obviously we’ve got The Love Inn doing really well in Stokes Croft, so it’s nice to be in a position to open a sister venue which is a bit different, but of the same ethos. “The best thing about doing what I do is around this time of year when we are doing the really creative part of it. We are looking to next summer, and looking at what artists we are going to book. Say it’s Glastonbury or Love Saves the Day, how the stages are going to look and what other elements we can bring in. You really get quite creative with it and that’s really fun — it’s why we do it.
“We discovered the venue when it was a skate park. We realised we could put great parties on there. “We did our first party there in 2008 with Jamie Jones and Deadmou5, with 1,500 people. The owner was just quite petrified and he said, ‘I know I’ve got this amazing space, but I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.’ “He didn’t have any of the right licenses, or right health and safety or anything. I’d done three years at the Tube and I needed something new, so I said, ‘look I’ll come along and run it for you’. And that’s how Motion got started.
“Then at the beginning of next you get to the nuts and bolts, and start planning stuff. Then in summer we are in the fields. It’s really nice to have a start, middle and end, and you get that lovely feeling when you finish and everyone’s had a really amazing time.
“Suddenly I was producing for 1,500 people, so I had to learn about sound systems, I had to learn about lighting, production and all the logistics that go into it.
“The drawbacks are that you can work some extremely antisocial hours. You can regularly end up working 80-90 hour weeks, without a doubt.
“At the same time, I was volunteering to do a lot of festival work. I was kind of a tea boy at Glastonbury for the Dance Village production office.
“And there is no safety net to what we do. If an event goes badly, you could very much go under. It’s a risk!
“I just literally used to make tea and laminate things. I can remember laminating artist passes for days on end, until the machine would break and you’d have to get a new machine…
“For anyone that’s interested in doing what we do, I can only really give the advice, which is the way I did it, to start from the bottom and work your way up. Volunteer for everything, get in and do the work, show that you’re a really hard worker, make friends, make contacts... Keep going and it will just build.
“Now I always tell people when they come and work for us how important laminating is!
Best know for bringing us Bristol’s Love Saves the Day festival
Team Love’s new bar, The Small Horse Inn opened up on Small Street this October, replacing The Big Chill. It’s been dubbed the “slightly upmarket sister of The Love Inn” and will serve decadent desserts from the Gourmet Dessert Club, as well as music, drinks and dancing.
“A few years ago, we found that people really avoided the centre of town, because it was that old cliché of places to get pissed really quickly, really cheaply, and then have a fight.
In 2006, Tom and some of the Blowpop team opened up their own bar, The Tube. It was an ambitious venture, taking over Massive Attack’s member’s bar, Nocturne.
It was over these years that Tom was building the beginnings of what would later become known as Team Love, which he heads up together with friend and record label owner, Futureboogie’s Dave Harvey.
“One is more of a festival project and one is a longer term, multi-use project. It’s quite hard to explain and I don’t want to jinx it.”
“It’s a nice thing to do after work — go and have some wine or cocktails and a really decadent desert.
Tom got his very first foot in the door helping run the hugely popular Blowpop nights, which ran for over 15 years in Bristol and hosted some massive special guests including, Annie Mac, Deadmau5, Afrika Bambaata, DJ Format, Groove Armada, Zinc and Pete Tong.
“So from doing bigger productions at Motion and working in the production office at Glastonbury and later Secret Garden Party and other festivals, I got to see how all these different aspects come together. I already ahd an interest in music as well obviously, but I built up the knowledge of how this shit actually works.”
or both of them come off, that will be really exciting. Watch this space!
Bristol. But it’s in really great hands, the guys there are great and this year is even busier than last year, so it’s still growing. “But trying to do all summer in fields and come back do all winter doing late nights, it’s too much. It’s too much for your sanity and relationships and just having a normal life. “I’m still involved in Motion in a consulting role, and I still go down and see the guys and book shows in for them. But we’re focusing on building Team Love at the moment. “We’ve got a couple of irons in the fire for next year and if one
“You get these times when you think you’re on the brink of glory and you’re going to make all this money, and then you realise two years down the line that’s still not happened. But you’re generally in a better place, and you’re generally always getting better.”
