Elder Island
Compa
Bristol based trio Katy Sargent, David Havard and Luke Thornton are Elder Island – an electro-acoustic outfit fusing elements of neo soul and left-of-centre pop, with a definite funk twist. Armed with a double bass and an impressive set of lungs, Katy Sargant’s rich vocals offer a sweet and soulful tone that flows over the top of multilayered synths. After releasing their self-titled EP in 2014, which garnered support from the likes of Huw Stephens and Gilles Peterson, they’re back with their second release, Seeds in the Sand, a five-track EP coming out on Metropolis Records on 11 November. Don’t miss their next Bristol gig at The Forge this month. Upcoming gigs: 18 November, The Forge
The Weekender – an almighty collaboration between Deep Medi and Teachings in Dub – returns to Trinity Centre this November. First release and weekend tickets have already sold out without even a hint toward the lineup, but judging by their past efforts, it’s going to be huge. However, we can reveal that one of the acts on the still-under-wraps lineup is Deep Medi favourite, dubstep producer Compa. After grabbing our attention with his 2012 remix of Mavado’s Dem A Talk, he’s been consistent with putting out innovative tracks on a select few labels including Boka and ZamZam, and of course Deep Medi Musik, who he released his Truth in Sound EP with early this year. Upcoming gigs: 25-26 November, Trinity Centre

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Luke: It’s best to maintain your bike. If not it may throw you off at any time... My newly bruised ribs can attest to this. Katy: Always wear gloves when using super glue – really, it’s advisable. 2. Favourite track of all time? Katy: Unanswerable! Surely that’s unanswerable… Luke: Can I name my least favourite? Karma Chameleon by Culture club – I can’t stand it! And that Rotterdam song. Oh, and Last Christmas... it’s like drills scratching my brain. Don’t get me wrong, I love a bit of Wham, but give me Club Tropicana any day... Katy: It’s a festive classic! Luke: I hate it... 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? David: Theo Parish – Solitary Flight. Luke: Tom Brown – Funkin’ for Jamaica. Katy: Rupert Holmes – Escape (The Pina Colada Song). No joke, one for the 3 o’clock swayers and crooners. 4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Luke: Kaytranada, JMSN, and Arthur Russell. David: Nicolas Jaar, The Invisible, and Romare. Katy: Nao, Hiatus Kaiyote, and it’s not new and it’s not an act, but I’ve been loving the compilation Chebran (French Boogie 1981-1985) – it’s fantastic. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Luke: Photography, but I’m kind of doing that anyhow.
THOSE QUESTIONS...
Katy: Music isn’t full time work for us at the moment, much as we would like it to be. I’m pretty much doing both my preferred alternative and the music. Though Dave has gone for the full time music option and is subsequently rather poor.
1. What have you learned today? Today I’ve learned, after sitting down in my studio at 10:30am this morning and just now looking at the clock for the first time all day, that time really does fly when you’re having fun!
7. Favourite thing on TV? I don’t really watch much TV as I work constantly, but for the first time in a while I’ve latched onto a comedic ITV drama called Cold Feet – which acts as a much welcome studio break!
6. What was the last book you read? Luke: Kafka’s Metamorphosis (about time!). Katy: Portrait of an Artist as a Young Girl by Grayson Perry.
2. Favourite track of all time? An impossible question if there ever was one, but the first track that comes to mind is Timeless by Goldie.
7. Favourite thing on TV? David: Stranger Things – predictable, but deserving.
3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? My remix of Mavado’s Dem A Talk track. Always seems to set people off.
8. Are you afraid of anything? The only thing I’ve ever been afraid of was flying, which was a huge problem when I started being booked internationally. In the beginning I usually travelled with a friend, but in the lead up to my first tour of America, which involved 14 flights in two weeks, I had to go alone and decided to see a therapist prior to overcome the fear. After three months of therapy, I braved the flights and by the time I came home I was cured. It’s never bothered me since.
8. Are you afraid of anything? Luke: The dentist. Katy: What is the difference between a phobia and a fear of something? Whatever it is, I really don’t like to see milk in a clear glass – it gives me the heebie-jeebies. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... Katy: I hate peas. David: I love trashy American crime dramas. Luke: I love sleeping. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Luke: Working. Katy: Knocking hells bells out of a cruddy old house. David: Wiring, soldering, and setting up midi channels.
soundcloud.com/elderisland // fb.com/elderisland // @elderisland
4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Very difficult question as I work with so many incredible artists both in the studio and when I’m on the road playing shows, but to give you an answer: Sir Spyro, Alix Perez and Footsie. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Honestly, I couldn’t give you an answer. I know this sounds cheesy but music really is my entire life. I live it and breathe it and would be lost without it. 6. What was the last book you read? The 50th Law by 50 Cent and Robert Greene.
9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I once beat David Beckham in a keepy-uppy competition. Honest. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Waking up, heading to the gym and then driving over to Leeds to pick up a Moog synthesiser for my studio that I just bought, then spending the rest of the day and most likely the entire night learning to programme it. It feels like Christmas.

28 // LOCAL TALENT
INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
HOLLY FLO LIGHTLY
Holly Flo Lightly landed in Bristol earlier this year to set up a new home for herself and focus on her flourishing music career. The independent MC and singer’s music falls under the category of hip hop, but its jazzy neo soul instrumentals and soft feminine harmonies are what distinguish her sound. Since settling in to Bristol, the buzz surrounding Holly Flo Lightly has been on the rise, with the release of a Sektion Red music video for her track Daydreamz, and a performance at Colston Hall alongside Bristol’s soul and hip hop queen Eva Lazarus this autumn. Nitelife sat down with Holly to get to know the MC and find out what inspired her move to Bristol, plus her opinion on the current climate of the nightlife scene and why she thinks that working independently in the music industry is the way forward... Holly Flo Lightly first got into music from a young age with a penchant for performance and musical theatre, but as she grew older her attention was drawn toward hip hop; taking her passion for music in a whole new direction. ‘I fell in love with hip hop when I was about sixteen. I didn’t even want to go to college, I just wanted to stay at home and listen to music. I was already writing poems and doing a lot of spoken word and poetry slams, but I started to get into making hip hop when I was living in Barcelona about two and a half years ago. ‘I was staying in a squat at the time that had a music studio, so we would end up recording a couple of tracks and having a laugh, and I loved it. After that I started going to open mic nights and meeting a lot of hip hop heads, but I soon realised the hip hop scene in Barelona probably wouldn’t help me grow as an MC because of the language barrier, so that’s when I moved to London.’
LOCAL TALENT // 29 Earlier this year Holly was inspired to take the leap and move from London to Bristol to escape a life of paying over the odds rent for a windowless room, and find more time to focus on making music – although her decision to leave London was not purely financial. ‘Another reason I moved to Bristol is because the independent venues in London are gradually being shut down. Obviously there was Fabric, but there are other venues of huge importance slowly being taken away from us too. ‘What helped me make a name in London was The Silver Bullet venue in Finsbury Park. The first time I ever played there was because I won a competition, but after that I ended up hosting there on a monthly basis and was always playing gigs there because it’s where they held Slam Jamm. It was such an important place to meet new musicians to collaborate with, but now it’s been closed down. ‘I think we are in a very crucial time right now, because I worry that the next couple of generations are going to live in a very controlled surveillance society. For people who have been to a proper free party rave where there are no sound restrictions, there’s something almost spiritual about people coming together to enjoy the music and feel the vibrations. But they want to stop that from happening because it incites unity and community.’ In comparison to her previous hometown London, Holly believes Bristol also has its size as an advantage, and plays a vital role in the supportive music community Bristol is hailed for. ‘There’s a high concentration of independent creatives in Bristol. Everyone I seem to meet is either an artist or a rapper or a singer of some kind. I think the fact it’s a smaller city geographically makes it easier to connect with people as well. For example, I met Eva [Lazarus] just by walking into a bar at a hip hop night, but in London that kind of thing just wouldn’t happen. You wouldn’t have that accessibility to artists.’
People in Bristol encourage each other to have a go on the mic more, and that’s exactly what this scene needs. Thanks, in part, to that chance meeting, Holly was invited to join Eva Lazarus on stage at Colston Hall to perform Eva’s hit Amsterdam, as part of Saffron Records’ showcase featuring, Bellatrix, China Bowls and Eva Lazarus and the Afronauts. ‘You can see how gobsmacked I was from the footage of that night. I was just so happy to be there to see the show, let alone perform on stage. It’s funny because the night before I had another gig at a pub in Bristol, but I had to stand outside the entrance to the men’s toilets because that’s where the mic was set up. So every photo of me from that night has a gents sign above my head and guys had to say ‘excuse me’ as they went past to get to the toilet! Performing in Colston Hall the following night made up for all of that though.’ Back in 2014, Holly Flo Lightly featured in a Sektion Red documentary directed by Oliver Whitehouse called Artemis. Focusing on female MCs in the UK, Holly amongst other MCs including Minx and Shady D were interviewed to get their opinion on the current music scene and its attitude toward women in hip hop. Holly reflected on her opinion of the representation of women in the industry: ‘When I first started performing in London I thought it was tough, but now I’ve moved to Bristol I’m starting to realise half of that might’ve just been a London thing. People in Bristol encourage each other to have a go on the mic more, and that’s exactly what this scene needs.
first artists to ever play jungle music on the show, so you can’t get much better than that.’ On top of her recent appearances with My Bad Sister, Holly also spends her spare time getting involved with the ever-growing all-girl super group Bitch Please, consisting of Cool FM garage and bassline DJ Lucinda, DJ Kushi, and vocalist and violinist Sarah Tonin. ‘We were all friends when I was living in London making music, and we would always play together at parties so eventually we thought we’d come together and start something called Bitch Please. People wanted to book us at first based just on the name!
‘I think I used to get a lot more offended by things back in the day and I’d take misogynistic bars very seriously, but now I’m realising I just don’t care that much anymore. I’ve decided that true feminism is about not caring about all the stereotypes and labels people give you just because you’re a female.’
‘Hip hop is consciously chilled music that you might want to listen to when you’re relaxing, but Bitch Please is something you can have more fun with. We started out at raves and people fell in love with the vibes of four girls behind the decks having it. I would be rapping and doing harmonies, with Sarah singing with her violin, and the other two girls would be DJing back to back. It’s really fun.’
Aside from her solo career, Holly is involved in several other projects and collectives, including an appearance in a recent posse video for Pump Up The Kicks from the colourfully-eccentric bassline twin duo, My Bad Sister.
While most musicians seek the support of a record label, Holly was quick to confirm that she won’t be signing her name on a dotted line any time soon. She instead opts for a more DIY approach to her music...
‘I was in a competition with them when first I met them and they are genuinely the most punk people I know. When they went on X Factor they were never gonna sign a contract. They had been doing it for ten years, so they just did it for free PR and ended up getting nearly a million hits on YouTube for their audition video. Plus they were the
‘I don’t think you really need labels anymore. I came to Bristol and started working with a particular label, but they just gave me empty promises and were a bit useless to be honest. But when I look at other musicians based in Bristol like my friend, MC and producer Danny Habitus, he’s independent and he’s got a really professional set
up and end product, because he’s taken ownership of his creativity and music. He does it so well and meeting people like him made me realise I’ll be better off doing this on my own.’ Looking forward – independently – Holly has a clear plan for what’s ahead, including a long-awaited new release on the horizon, as well a burgeoning career in radio, recently landing herself a role as broadcast manager’s assistant at Ujima. ‘I wanted to get into broadcasting so I can help promote and push the local scene and bring musicians of all different genres together in one place. ‘I’m focusing on getting a full album out next year. It’s been a long time coming, but I want it to be right. I’m not prepared to cringe for the rest of my life – I’d rather wait years, if I have to, and release something I’m really proud of. It’s coming though.’ For those who can’t wait that long, the good news is that Holly’s Aperitif EP drops on SIKA Records this month, with a big ol’ party at Blue Mountain to celebrate... Don’t miss Holly Flo Lightly, along with more of the SIKA crew at Blue Mountain on 17 November.

MØ AT SWX
If SWX had any fears about shaking off the bad reputation left behind by the venue’s former incarnation as Syndicate – a club known wholly for its sticky student nights – they needn’t worry anymore. An impressive month of live music at SWX culminated in the relative newcomers being selected as a main stage venue for the popular Simple Things festival.
We’re fully expecting to see MØ topping charts and lineups with her solo projects before next summer. Since partnering with concert promoters MRJ, October at SWX saw Band of Skulls, Augustines, Goat and the gig we were most excited about, Danish singer and songwriter MØ. Karen Marie Ørsted, better known by her stage name MØ, is an electro pop star with punk roots, capped by an insurmountable cool-girl aesthetic. Even if you don’t like her music, you’ll probably like her.
In addition to a period spent as part of punk activist duo MOR, whose brief catalogue includes an EP entitled Fisse I Dit Fjæs (Pussy in Your Face), she also cites Spice Girls as an inspiration and was recently joined on stage in London by Mel C to perform a cover of Say You’ll be There. Her unashamed pop positioning is refreshing; it’s great to see an artist traversing the ‘cool’ ranks without feeling the need to throw in a token rap to corroborate their so-called edginess. MØ began collaborating with electronic producer Diplo in 2013 on her track XXX 88, cementing a mutually-bountiful relationship which continues under his chart-topping alias, Major Lazor. MØ co-wrote and provided the vocals for his breakthrough single with DJ Snake, Lean On, which reached number two in UK charts. She also co-wrote and featured on Major Lazor’s recent UK number one track featuring Justin Bieber, Cold Water. But as for MØ’s success, it’s not just a case of being in with the right crowd, as she proves at SWX only three songs in, announcing: ‘I’m going to play some new songs for you guys’. The brave move is met by loud cheers from the crowd, and the level of enthusiasm on the dancefloor remains unchanged
REWIND // 31
throughout the show, whether fans are able to sing along or not. This unquestioning allegiance from her fans is just one of the reasons why we’re fully expecting to see MØ topping charts and lineups with her solo projects before next summer. Even if her songs aren’t groundbreaking – they’re good – MØ’s performance and the actor-like emotion she injects into each vocal is what carries her to another level. She barely keeps still for a moment, whipping her plaited hair about and rolling around the stage floor with just the right amount of theatrics.
The level of enthusiasm on the dancefloor remains unchanged throughout the show. For 90 minutes, she is totally entrancing, covering off favourites from her 2014 album No Mythologies to Follow including Fire Rides and Dust is Gone; an acoustic cover of her Major Lazor-Bieber collaboration , Cold Water; and soon-to-be hits from her forthcoming album: Kamikaze and Final Song – which was her final song – before she was welcomed back on stage for an encore consisting of Goodbye, Drum and a firework-ending performance of Lean On. Production wise, SWX could rival any live venue in Bristol. The venue’s £300,000 lighting and sound system is clearly money well spent, and it’s hard to believe the space wasn’t really being used for live music until now. Though it’s safe to say that SWX has now fully inducted itself as one of Bristol’s top live venues.

SKREAM AT MARBLE FACTORY Trailblazing producer and label boss Oliver Jones aka Skream brings his Open to Close tour to Bristol this November as part of the In:Motion series. From the time doors open until the lights come on, Skream will have complete control of the decks at Motion’s cosier sister venue, Marble Factory, for eight whole hours. All the while house and techno experts Nightowl will be looking after the lineup next door, where Bicep, Mind Against and Moxie will share the warehouse stage. Stopping only at his favourite venues across Europe, the Open to Close tour promises to showcase where Skream is at musically today. We gave him a call to find out what that sounds like…
It’s been a breath of fresh air to be able to fully show my musical interests. Many will be expecting to hear something in the realms of house, techno and funk – which he’s become known for since officially retiring from dubstep in 2013 – but the producer and record selector has got a lot more up his sleeve than that. ‘We’re talking like, African acoustic – it’s going to be all over the place. I try and advise people to get there as early as possible because that’s when you hear the more obscure stuff. ‘This is my perfect setting – especially after the festival season where everything is so 90 minutes, in and out. I get to show another side of my tastes, because a lot of people have only seen me at peak times, so it’s just a way for me to showcase what amazing records I have.’ While it’s easy to think of Skream’s more recent sound as a new direction – the polar opposite, even, of the dark and heavy world of dubstep that he helped create – Skream says he’s always held a variety of musical tastes. ‘I worked in a record store for most of my youth, so if you actually look at my record collection from when I was a kid, it’s made up of garage, house and techno. Dubstep wasn’t a thing when I was a kid, it sort of came onto the scene and I got locked into one sound for such a long time. It’s been quite a breath of fresh air to be able to fully show my musical interests.’ Early last year, Skream released his techno-flavoured track Still Lemonade on Crosstown Rebels, with the promise of a full album to come; however, fans are still listening out for news that the long-awaited project is on its way… ‘It’s not at the moment. I’m trying to get my head completely back into making records again. I shattered my leg in May and I was meant to be going into the studio a lot then. Then summer happened – I’ve been performing with a broken leg
I’m definitely going to be back in people’s faces a lot more than I have been. and the studio has been really hard. Luckily, all my records that are being played at the moment, I made last year. You Know Right, which is forthcoming of Crosstown Rebels, has been my track of the summer and I made that in January – so I’m really lucky in that way, otherwise I’d have had nothing. ‘I’ve only just started wearing full sets of trainers again. I was dancing on Saturday night, but it’s definitely not 100% yet. But there is going to be a lot more Skream music coming out.
PREVIEW // 33
‘I’ve just done a remix for Bastille and a remix for Adam Fitzpatrick… There should be at least two or three Skream releases before the end of the year, and more remixes as well. I’m definitely going to be back in people’s faces a lot more than I have been.’
There is going to be a lot more Skream music coming out. If he’s been quiet on the record making front, Skream has been busy with his label Of Unsound Mind, which he launched in 2014 without any restrictive guidelines or niche for what kind of music he was going to put out – other than what he was feeling and the artists he wanted people to know about. ‘The label is booming. The next release is from Monday Club with a track called After Dark. I’ve got a new kid from Crawley called Billy Turner who makes so much good techno – we’ve made something like a hundred tracks. Then we’ve got a new artist called Eli Brown, and we’re putting Motions’ album out
next year. The label is just firing. There’s not enough time in a month to get records out. ‘It’s all house and techno really, but style wise, it’s all over the place. The stuff that Motions are doing is completely different to what Billy Turner is doing, which is completely different to what Eli Brown is doing… ‘The label kind of represents my sets in a way – a lot of different vibes and different styles and different moods. ‘I want to start releasing more full-length albums from artists next year. A lot of the artists I’ve been releasing for a while, so it’s like we’re building up a little family – I really like it. I want to do some more Of Unsound Mind parties as well.’ So it seems pretty clear that, despite a recent resurgence in popularity, Skream – the first household name in dubstep – is sticking to his guns about being finished with the genre. With Magnetic Man bandmate Benga increasingly getting booked for headline slots, we can only assume that promoters are after the Skream kudos for their lineups too... ‘Yeah, of course. I just tell them the same thing: ‘Nah!’ I don’t want to play records I was playing 10 years ago. I’ve never been about that. I don’t want to end up being one of those people.
‘It’s a different time and I’m in a different headspace – I wouldn’t be able to give it my all, and that’s not fair. It’s not fair on me and it’s not fair on everyone else. ‘I’m much more of a producer in that world than a DJ. I’m not making that music now. I’m fully concentrating on what I’m doing currently.’ Talking about his Open to Close tour, which he road tested in North America last year, he says: ‘Every show the feedback was just insane. I think a lot of the kids who came to see me had never seen a DJ play longer than an hour or two, so it was really eye opening for them to see someone play so many different styles. ‘I’ve been going to Bristol since I was 18. I love Bristol – it holds a special place in my heart. It was the first place I went outside of London to go and DJ, so I’ve got a million memories, but not a lot that could go to print…’

34 // THE INFLUENCERS
THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH
CHRIS SHARP Chris Sharp Age: 48 Job title: Owner/Director – The Fleece Bass player– The Blue Aeroplanes
Frequently billed as Bristol’s most important live music venue, The Fleece is loved by both gig goers and the artists who play there. Inside, the walls are plastered with posters commemorating some of the influential acts that have graced its stage over the years, including Radiohead, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Muse, Amy Winehouse, Jeff Buckley and Oasis, who all played the medium-sized venue before they were famous. More than 30 years since opening as a live music venue in 1982, The Fleece retains its reputation for bringing in some of the best up-and-coming acts, with the likes of Honeyblood and Afriquoi set to play this month. However, it hasn’t been an easy journey for the venue. For much of the 2000s, while under the ownership of a corporate, the once-thriving venue had become known for cheesy cover bands and being a bit of a shit night. A lifeline came in 2010 in the form of Blue Aeroplanes bassist Chris Sharp, who took over the venue with the sole intention of returning The Fleece to its former glory. By 2014, it became clear Chris had more than done his job, when The Fleece came under threat of closure and a #SaveTheFleece campaign gained 13,000 signatures within the first five hours. Naturally, we had a few questions for the man who turned it all around…
If you pay attention to the details then it puts the artists in the right frame of mind to deliver a great show. As the owner of The Fleece, what does your role entail? First off – keeping the venue open! It’s an incredibly tough and competitive business and sometimes it feels like there are wolves at every door. My role is to balance the need to keep delivering credible shows as often as possible, with making sure the venue makes enough profit to survive, You bought the lease for £1 in May 2010 – how did that come about? The venue was losing so much money at the time that the previous owners were becoming increasingly desperate to get rid of it. A venue like The Fleece needs special attention and should be run by people who really understand live music and the local scene. Before I took it over it was run by a large corporation who also had about 1700 other pubs/bars in the UK, none of which were live music venues. What was your plan for The Fleece from the outset? In a nutshell – to return it to its rightful place as the best venue in Bristol. All profit has been put back into improvements and refurbishment. Anyone who used to come here in the 90s and 00s will see a massive difference. Bands often comment on how much the facilities have improved since their last tour, which is always nice to hear. What did it mean to you when the musical community pulled together to help save The Fleece when it was under threat of closure from a new flat development? I was genuinely overwhelmed by the size of the Save The Fleece petition and the speed at which it all went off. We were hoping for 10,000 signatures in a month and we got 44,000 people in a week. The battle is far from over though. We managed to get the council to apply minimum
conditions so that the flats have a certain level of sound insulation but the developer then successfully appealed against the decision to apply fixed shut windows. If you have been here recently you will see that the work is well and truly underway. We expect the first residents to move in by September 2017. From that point onwards we just have to hope that we have reasonable new neighbours!
What makes The Fleece special as a music venue? The room itself is almost 200 years old. There is so much history. It’s a big square room with a nice high stage so everyone can see. We also have the longest bar in Bristol, which runs the entire length of the room so everyone can get served quickly. The Fleece has operated as a tour circuit venue since 1982 so its name has been enshrined
THE INFLUENCERS // 35 on the backs of countless band t-shirts over the last three and a half decades. Do you think being part of a band is helpful when you’re running a venue like this? Definitely. We know what the bands want. It’s the little things that make the difference. If you pay attention to the details then it puts the artists in the right frame of mind to deliver a great show. Can you describe a typical day at the office for you? Fortunately there is no such thing as a typical day at The Fleece. We have a huge variety of bands, of all genres, playing here from one night to the next so it creates a fresh challenge every day. That’s one of the perks of the job. Has there been a standout moment during your time at The Fleece? Way too many to remember. I was a big fan of The Blue Aeroplanes for years before I joined, so I guess there’s nothing better than playing in your favourite band in your own venue! And I get to re-live the experience every year. What’s the best thing about your job? Not having a boss and getting to meet some of my favourite bands. Worst thing? Paperwork and dealing with complaints when people are being unreasonable, What else do you do outside of The Blue Aeroplanes and The Fleece? My girlfriend trains and breeds Belgian Shepherd (Malinois) dogs as a full time job. We have four of our own – Lucy, Keith, Xia and Vox – and I bring Vox, the youngest one, into the Fleece office from time to time. What’s coming up at The Fleece that you’re most excited about? Burlesque Wonderland returns in January. The debut night in October was called ‘Alice Through The Martini Glass’ and this time it’s a James Bond theme called ‘007 - A License To Thrill’. Sadly I won’t be here to see it myself as it’s in the middle of the Aeroplanes tour but I would highly recommend it as great night out – the last one had 5 star reviews all round. I also really enjoy the monthly Britpop cub nights we do on the fourth Friday of every month as it gives me a rare chance to do a bit of DJing.
What advice would you have for anyone wanting to get into a similar role? Be prepared to give up most of your hobbies. It’s a role that needs total dedication and a huge amount of passion for live music. There is not really a career path toward owning a venue. I just got lucky and happened to be in the right place at the right time. The opportunity presented itself so I thought, ‘Why not? Let’s give this a go!’ Until that day came along, I’d never really considered it. What can people expect at your annual Blue Aeroplanes show at The Fleece this December? We have our first full UK tour in about 10 years in January so
we’ll be playing most of the new album in preparation for that. We also have Ian McNabb (The Icicle Works) supporting us at The Fleece gig, so I’ll be looking forward to seeing his set as I’m a bit of a fan.
