INTERVIEW
Laid Blak Urban Reggae heavyweights Laid Blak are a local treasure that make you proud to call Bristol home. The Bristol based reggae and soul fuelled band began ten years ago and have taken the UK by storm with their renowned vibrant live shows and the successful release of their 2012 album ‘Red & Blak’. Nitelife Magazine were invited to join Laid Blak at a rehearsal to check out some new music and hang out with Bristol’s finest reggae band. We were joined by founder DJ Bunjy, Joe Peng and vocalist Tita to chat about Bristol music, Laid Blak covers and the future for the band. Here’s what went down... First of all, what do you think the Bristol music scene has to offer in comparison to other cities in the UK? Joe Peng: A vast range! Every weekend without a doubt you can go and find whatever it is your looking for. Bunjy: This city offers so many different flavours of music. Joe Peng: The standard has been set so high by people like Smith & Mighty, Fresh 4... Bunjy: Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead, Roni Size, Dr Meaker... Joe Peng: And Laid Blak- obviously. Yeah Laid Blak are supposed to be the best reggae band in the South West...of the world?! (Laughter) Joe Peng: But yeah, the standards have been set so high by these bands and everyone’s trying to come up with the new ‘Bristol sound’. You just know that if you’re not any good then....you know, do it for the love but keep it in the bedroom!

Just from listening to ‘Bristol Love’ you can tell you guys are heavily inspired by Bristol’s surroundings- both positive and negative. How do you think your music captures the essence of the city’s underground urban music scene? Joe Peng: Well for instance, we’ve got DJ Bunjy who’s been going for flippin’ twenty five years now- sorry to be giving out how old you are... (Bunjy Laughs) Joe Peng: Anyway, he has something to do with Fresh 4 and the first song they put out. He’s been around from day one on the underground scene. Then you got me - Emcee Joe Peng and I’ve been emceeing since I was fifteen. Then you’ve got Louis our bass player who was a founding member of City Rockers- a pre Massive Attack wild bunch when it was all street and underground. So just those three examples alone show we are firmly planted to the street. Can you remember off the top of your head your first ever Bristol gig? Joe Peng: Yeah I can because it was our first gig and it was at Elbow Rooms on Park Street. Two of my friends had just been shot and I wrote a song about them and I remember how hard it was singing and not crying at the same time. That’s a pretty tough memory to have. I guess in a sense it was a bitter-sweet moment?

Joe Peng: Yeah but a very, very good learning curve about how to get emotion into a song. Looking at the current position of the Bristol music scene, do you think vibrant movements are still taking place, or has the city’s spirit fizzled out over the years? Joe Peng: You’ve got to search a bit harder and you’ve got to know what you’re looking for, but it’s definitely still there. Bunjy: With our music we are one of those groups who like to keep our toes in that pond of where we come from. No matter what direction the music heads, we will always come back. It’s our roots. Which musicians have inspired you over the years to help create the Laid Blak sound we hear today? Joe Peng: Obviously Joe Peng! (Laughter) Joe Peng: I don’t know man, personally I get inspired by everything. I will go through spells where I listen to nothing but classical music in my car and people get in there and they look at me like I’m some kind of weirdo. I was brought up on Elvis Presley and country and western and when my mum brought me to Bristol my dad was a massive reggae fan so that’s where the reggae love kicks in. Hard heavy metal is the only music I can say I hate with a passion. Tita: These guys inspired me. I met these guys about six months ago now and I was invited by Bunjy to come and try out a few songs but I’d never really done reggae music before. I was brought up on people like Beyoncé and more mainstream music, so I had to listen hard to a lot of their music to understand it. I think if you don’t know the background to reggae then you can’t just come up and sing because there’s a lot of soul behind it. Bunjy: When I first saw Tita perform her energy was incredible. She was the only artist on stage at Sunday Night Soul to really smash it up. I just thought ‘wow’ and knew I had to speak to this woman and see if she is interested in singing with us!
You’ve had a lot of artists cover and remix your work over the years, including Bristol’s own H.E.N.C.H Recordings with Chasing Shadows remix of ‘Red’. How does it feel to know you have inspired other artists with your music, especially those right on your doorstep? Joe Peng: Well for me it’s not necessarily always about the artists I inspire. Instead what makes it for me are times like when I sung one of my songs to a little five year old girl at an awards party, and then a few weeks later she sung it back to me in a video and she knew all the words. Or the time when we performed at St George’s Park and no one knew we were there. We were on a banger stage and had twenty-five kids dancing around us and singing along to the choruses. Bringing it back to music, you guys have toured with huge names including Lee Scratch Perry and Easy Star All-Stars. Who would you say has been your favourite to perform with and why? Bunjy: Well for me it was when we performed alongside Ed Sheeran. Many years ago we were headlining something and Ed was supporting us and I guess that’s kind of what inspired him to perform one of our tracks. But the thing is, years later when we performed it at Ed Sheeran’s gig, half the crowd knew the tune but were like “wow, who are these guys? They’re performing Ed’s song!” But obviously he came on and introduced us and said how we inspired him to do the tune and the crowd just went mental. We performed it twice that night because he invited us on stage to perform it with him too. Red & Blak knocked our socks off back in 2012. Is there a new album in the pipeline we can look forward to hearing soon? Bunjy: Yep, that’s what we’ve been doing in the studio this evening and as often as possible. I’d say there will be a few singles put out leading up to March for an album, 100%. Joe Peng: It’s pretty much finished already. And can you give us a taster of what to expect? Joe Peng: You can expect to hear a lot of different stuff. We’ve got three different musicians in our band since the first album. We’ve got the beautiful girl Tita who will be getting heavily involved. We’re going to be using people like James Morton who’s a massive saxophonist and we’re gonna draw people in from all over the place. Personally I think it’s got to show evolution and progression, so just expect something completely different to Red & Blak. That’s exciting stuff! Okay, so obviously you mentioned quite a few big names to come out of Bristol, like Roni Size and Massive Attack. How does it feel to be recognised as one of those iconic names? Bunjy: Well it’s a blessing and an honour and it’s because of all the years of hard work, dedication and love for what we do, whether it’s paid or unpaid. I’m going to be doing this until I’m under the ground, basically! Joe Peng: I guess when it comes to answering these questions I like to walk the line of confidence and arrogance, but I wouldn’t be doing it if I didn’t think I could do it at the highest level. Tita, you are a relativity new member to Laid Blak, how does it feel to be part of such a beloved Bristol band? Tita: It’s awesome because a lot of my friends are fans, so when I told them I was going to start singing with Laid Blak they were all ‘oh my god!’ They come and support a lot of our shows as wellthey love it! What advice can you give to all the budding musicians out there? Tita: Work really hard! I’ve been doing it since I was about fifteen and there were some points where I would really struggle to juggle work, school and singing all at the same time. But the more I pushed the more everything progressed, so I guess good things come to those who work hard. Joe Peng: If you want to work in music and if you know you’ve got a talent then quit that job and make music your thing or at least make a good job of balancing it. And finally, where do you see the Bristol music scene in five years time? Joe Peng: I think the music scene in general is waiting for something to kind of kick off. I mean, dubstep came in and started off underground, but now it’s used in cheesy adverts. They’ve brought back grime… Bunjy: And hip-hop, especially the 90s boom bap sounds... Joe Peng: But yeah, asides from that I think you can just feel everyone waiting for something...and guess what it is? Laid Blak, baby!
