Producer and instrumentalist Kayla Painter writes ambient electronic music drawing from techno, garage and post dub. After the success of her eponymous EP in 2012 and follow up A Very New Everything, Kayla released Ga Ga at the beginning of 2015, with the video screened as part of the BBC6 Music Festival fringe event – earning the track airtime across shows on BBC 6 Music, BBC 3 Late Junction, and BBC Radio Wales. Aside from her audio work, she also performs alongside a visual artist with a dual screen set up, creating a mesmerizing show with projections in front of and behind Kayla, creating a beautiful immersive depth to the visuals. The hypnotising AV show draws on aesthetics and themes seen in her artwork, dystopian futures, uneasy environments – a dream like science fiction that is created with clever use of audio and visual space. Kayla brings her dual screen show to Simple Things this month – trust us, it’s one not to miss.
Bright Light Bright Light is the moniker of Welsh born, London/New York based Rod Thomas. His long list of achievements include tours opening for Ellie Goulding, Erasure and Scissor Sisters on their sold-out UK tour. Pet Shop Boys themselves praised his cover of West End Girls, and as a remixer, his Kelis, Ellie Goulding, Erasure, VV Brown mixes and his series of bootlegs have hit clubs hard in a big way. Elton John is such a fan of his work that he joined Rod on duet I Wish We Were Leaving on his second album Life Is Easy, and signed him up as the support act for 55 live dates on his last world tour. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I have an array of sleep disorders and once was observed in a sleep clinic for a week, which was actually really spooky. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Going to Australia! Not a usual day for me. I can’t wait! I’m doing a bit of travelling, then going to see all my cousins who I grew up with, as one of them is getting married.

PETE JOSEF
It’s hard to pigeonhole a musician like Pete Josef, but that’s exactly what makes him so exciting. The self-described soul, pop and jazz inspired debut album Colour surfaced late last year, putting the local musician firmly on the map as a solo artist, gaining attention for his genuine music and heartfelt lyrics. But despite the storming success from his first solo release, Pete has already encountered his fair share of once in a life time musical achievements, even before releasing his debut LP. Nitelife caught up with Pete in Bristol to chat about his musical journey before his solo career and his evergrowing success since his debut release. Hailing from Bath, 36-year-old multi-instrumentalist Pete Josef was introduced to music from a very young age by his musical parents.
It was playing with big names like Roni Size and Kelis that really put things into perspective. ‘I was a chorister in a choir growing up. Both of my parents were very musical and involved with the church, so the years from about six to 12-years-old were my musical grounding. ‘In my early to mid-teens I went on to have classical piano lessons, but that didn’t go very well. I just loved to listen to stuff and then try and emulate it instead, so I left the piano for a bit and started teaching myself guitar, and then slowly moved towards computers.’ The self-taught soul musician found his feet when he started to discover more styles of music, and it was an unexpected gift from a friend that opened the doorway to all things soul, jazz and everything in between. ‘My uncle started a studio in Hengrove and when I was 16 I started working with him. I met a guy there at the time and he had one of those big CD wallets with an unbelievable music collection. This was all before the days of Spotify and YouTube, so when the studio was quiet I used to go in and listen to this entire music collection. That was really the beginning of my schooling in a lot of genres, particularly soul, prog rock and jazz.’ As his knowledge of musical genres expanded, so too did his repertoire of self-taught instruments. But despite his passion, the musician didn’t start playing at local gigs until after he began studying Contemporary Music at Dartington College of Arts. ‘To be honest for a long time I didn’t find performing an easy thing to do. I always got very nervous, I was so nervous for much of my twenties that I would find even social situations like going to the pub nerve wracking. I

think that’s one of the things that stopped me from putting my music out there for so long. I had an album ready to go when I was 20, but it was just finding the courage to put it out there into the world and be judged on it.’ After studying at Dartington, Pete moved back to Bristol to focus on gaining as much experience as possible working with multiple bands. As his confidence and reputation grew, Pete soon found himself landing one of the biggest gigs of his life working alongside Bristol’s musical treasure Roni Size in 2006. ‘I started singing at an old soul night and the guy who ran it was a guy called Jay Wilcox. Jay was working with Roni Size on something at the time and Roni was looking for someone to do horn arrangement. I can play trumpet, flugelhorn and valve trombone, so Jay introduced us and I started going to his studio and recording different horn sections for him. I think he enjoyed the fact I could hear stuff and play it by ear, and I enjoyed the fact that he liked to work super quick. That’s what started our working relationship. I guess I became his studio gimp… he didn’t keep me in a cupboard or anything though!’ Pete toured with Roni Size’s Reprazent between the years 2006-2009 and was introduced to many new performance experiences, including a last-minute request to perform a live set with Reprazent for a music show on Channel 4. ‘I said yes, then I shit myself and went out and bought a guitar, amp and pedals. I had nothing and I only had two days to prepare! That was a baptism of fire, but it went great in the end and even led to touring with Reprazent across Australia with big names like Q Tip and Deadmou5. It was insane. ‘The last thing I did with Reprazent was the huge Roni Size orchestral gig at Colston Hall several years ago, and that was an unforgettable moment. We knew it was special at the time, but it was only when we watched it back we realised how incredible it really was.’ After touring with Roni Size and even performing with the likes of Milkshake-maker Kelis on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, Pete Josef had the realisation that he wanted to change the focus of his musical career. ‘I was on tour with Kelis when I had a light bulb moment and realised if I didn’t invest the time on my own music now, it might never happen. I think it was probably down to frustration that I hadn’t got my shit together up until that point, but a part of me also thinks it happened when it was supposed to happen.
‘To be completely honest, I didn’t even think about what would happen after the album was released, so I was really shocked by the response it had received. It was a big thing for me putting this album out, but there was something inside me telling me I absolutely had to do it. I put it down as one of my big life events. ‘I was really surprised when Gilles Peterson picked up those songs. I remember exactly where I was when I heard him play those songs on the radio, I was listening on my phone and when they came on I was left totally speechless. ‘If I had to advise someone else who’s doing the same thing, I’d tell them to go out there and make the best album you can and make it for yourself and hope other people will love it too.’
‘I think what used to hold me back was my nerves for performing, but by then I had conquered some really big gigs and it was playing with big names like Roni Size and Kelis that really put things into perspective.’
Colour quite literally reflects a charming spectrum of colour in its sound, with its warm soulful instrumentals and poetic lyrics; something that’s not easily achieved by any musician. Pete thanks his surroundings and experiences for providing this inspiration.
When Pete Josef finally took the leap and released his debut album Colour, the response received from listeners, including praise from the much-lauded DJ and curator Gilles Peterson, proved the release was well worth the wait.
‘I’m big into nature, I live out in the countryside now and I love it – it’s like tonic for my soul. I know it’s a cliché thing to say but that’s a big theme for me. Love and relationships and personal growth play a big part in my writing too.
‘I mostly multi-track songs myself, but we recorded a couple of tunes, Colour and Live Your Life. I’d love to record live all the time but really it’s not logistically possible.’ Despite the growing success from Josef’s debut album finding him touring all over the country, the musician still enjoys coming back to Bristol to perform and embrace the unique alliance amongst local musicians. ‘The first gig we did here before we went off to do our album launch in Berlin was a small intimate gig and was a massively special moment. What’s great about doing gigs in Bristol is that all my Bristol friends come. I can’t explain the warm feeling you get when you’re in that situation, it’s really amazing. I love the community of musicians in Bristol; they are so supportive and so warm. Everyone wants each other to succeed and that’s what I love about Bristol.’

MASSIVE ATTACK ON THE DOWNS
THIS MONTH’S REWIND COMES VIA FESTIVAL OBSESSIVES PITCHMAGAZINE.CO.UK… Bristol was treated to the first music event on Clifton Downs since 2011 this month; where, after 13 years, Massive Attack finally returned to their hometown for seemingly the wettest day the world has ever seen. Brand new festival The Downs was born for 2016 after Massive Attack agreed to team up with local event organisers Team Love (Love Saves the Day, Arcadia Bristol) to put together a one-day event fusing main stage acts like Skepta, Primal Scream and Young Fathers, with local talent (Krust, Pinch, Stryda, et al.), as well as a politically-leaning Information Area with talks from the likes of Giles Duley and Vivienne Westwood (via video). Our day probably started the same as most people who’d bought tickets for the once-in-a-decade event – looking longingly out of the window willing the rain to let up, before a begrudging acceptance of our shitty British weather.

Once we arrived at the event we headed straight to the bar for some drinks, which would later become a favourite point of contention for the inevitable Twitter moaners, who complained that drinks were overpriced at £4.30 a can and some RRP prices were visible. We all know how much a 4-pack costs down the shop, and in what realm would you expect to pay less then £4ish for a can at a festival? We headed over to the second ‘local music’ stage, courtesy of Lion Pulse Sound System, where it became apparent that those who arrived early were not going to let the rain dampen their spirits. We stuck around for Bristol Hi-Fi and Smith & Mighty who warmed the crowd up nicely before Skepta took to the main stage. The gods seemed to be on the side of the energetic grime artist as we were offered a rare respite from the rain throughout his set. The hoods were off and the crowd was grooving to Numbers and It Ain’t Safe, among others, from his new album Konnichiwa. Now on to the Twitter moaners next favourite point of contention: the queues. Admittedly the queues were absolutely insane, but when 18,000 wet wipes don’t turn up until 6 o’clock because they’re too scared of a bit of rain, then of course there’s going to be a huge back log at the bars and food vendors. Ultimately, the organisers offered more than enough in way of food and drink outlets, but some factors are beyond their control. Team Love’s Tom Paine tells us: ‘Myself, the team and the band are all really happy with how the first music concert event on The Downs in over 15 years went. Faced with some fairly tricky conditions and times what felt like a tempest of rain, all the bands took to the stage and really blew people away,
culminating with Massive Attack perhaps putting in one of the performances of their lifetime – it really was special.’ Before all that though, Primal Scream followed Skepta on the main stage to play notable classics Movin’ on up, Loaded and, of course, their final track Rocks. It was around this time that the sun went down and the entire crowd turned into one unidentifiable mass of hoods, and even going to the toilet was met with a whole new challenge of successfully finding your friends again before the headline act…
All the bands took to the stage and really blew people away, culminating with Massive Attack perhaps putting in one of the performances of their lifetime. - Tom Paine, Team Love The first thing to say about Massive Attack’s set is that the sound was spot on. I’m not sure whether they just cranked it up for the headliners, but it seemed to be an improvement on the previous acts. The set started slow, opening with Hymn of the Big Wheel, featuring the amazing Horace Andy, who stuck about for a number of tunes throughout the set – most notably Girl I Love You from Heligoland, which, for me, marked a point in the set where they started to step up the gear.
Young Fathers came on to accompany the Bristolians for a few before the long anticipated reunion with old friend Tricky who showed up for a token track Take it There. The end of the set was littered with classics like Inertia Creeps and Angel before Deborah Miller came on to see off the set with Safe From Harm and the encore, Unfinished Sympathy. Despite the naysayers, the event was very well organised and had the weather been on form I can’t see there being much to complain about. In fact, I quite like the fact that it rained (even if my coat still smells dank) – it certainly made the whole day a lot more memorable on a now-rare opportunity to see one of the most successful bands to come out of Bristol / the UK. There’s also some good news regarding the condition of The Downs and some exciting prospects for the future, as Tom Paine explains: ‘The site itself held up incredibly well – the grass is still green even after 30,000 people danced amongst torrents of water falling from the sky. We certainly hope this could be the start of an annual concert on The Downs each summer.’ Pitch Magazine is an online bible for festival junkies. DAY OF THE DEAD CARNIVAL @ THEKLA OWINY SIGOMA SOUND SYSTEM
Tropical party-throwers Fiesta Bombarda bring their carnival-style party to Bristol this Halloween for a Day of the Dead Carnival at Thekla. They are known as much for creating unique party spaces – think: neon lights, giant dream catchers and palm trees – as the unusual acts they bring to the table. Favouring the sounds of the wider world, including reggae, afrobeat brass, dub and carnival sounds, Feista Bombarda tend to book lesser-known, but brilliant acts with cult followings. And their Day of the Dead Carnival headliners are no exception; the MOBO-nominated and Gilles Petersonapproved Owiny Sigoma Band will bring their Sound System show to Thekla for a small taste of their London electro / Keyan Luo tribe mash up. We had a word with bass player Louis Hackett about the group’s origins and what to expect at Thekla this month…
Gilles Peterson has always been a patron of the music that we’ve worked on. The UK contingent of The Owiny Sigoma band – brothers Jesse and Louis Hackett along with school friend and drummer Tom Skinner – and all hail from London, or more specifically, from the band Elmore Judd. ‘We were taken on a musical exchange project in Kenya called the Art of Protest,’ explains Louis. There, they struck up a relationship with traditional Luo tribe musicians Charles Okoko, a Nyidoungue drum player, and Joseph Nyamungo who plays the lyre-like nyatiti and also harnesses a powerful set of lungs. The Brits and Kenyans began working together, and it was pretty obvious that they were on to something special. Global tastemaker Gilles Peterson heard wind of the project and quickly signed them to his label Brownswood Recordings, who released Owiny Sigoma Band’s self-titled debut album in 2011. ‘Amongst many others, we met Joseph and Charles, who we just had a really strong connection with… We managed to get some recording done and some early demos, and it was all very rough and ready at that time, but Gilles heard some of the demos and was really keen on furthering the project. ‘Gilles has always had a bit of an ear for some of the different projects that we’ve done between us over the years (all the band members have had different musical side projects). He’s always been a patron of the music that we’ve worked on.’

Half a decade later and Owiny Sigoma Band have put out three albums on Gilles’ Brownswood imprint, the latest saw them return to Kenya, this time to Nyanza – the hometown of band members Joseph and Charles. ‘We completed Nyanza much quicker than the other albums. We tried to complete as much of it at the time as we could. We also recorded it all on a very portable studio set up, so it was all quite rough and raw round the edges and it wasn’t technically recorded in the most pristine fashion, but that left quite an imprint on the sound. ‘I think all of the albums have been unique partly because of the spaces they’ve been done in but also through the moment in time, the musicians that we involved, and just the experience we’ve had in making the albums have all been different.’ Bringing two musical cultures together in the way that Owiny Sigoma Band do – a 50/50 relationship – is no mean feat. The final product is not, as seems to be in vogue at the moment, electronic music that samples tribal recordings. An Owiny track could feature Jesse’s soft vocals in perfect harmony with the rhythm of a nyatiti, or it could be Nyamungo calling out in Luo over a techno beat. ‘There’s a fine line when we’re trying to create something new and keep the roots of it. It’s born out of traditional Kenyan Luo tribe music, but from the beginning we’ve always tried to experiment with that and push the boundaries of where that lies. Over the six or more years that we’ve worked together, that level of trust has grown. There’s never been a conflict; it’s always just a matter of trying to find what works best and experimenting and being free with it. ‘Often we will have recorded things and then taken elements away and completely stripped some of the stuff out. So we’re always trying to pull things apart, and use an interesting combination of different things. We don’t really have any different rules as to how we go about it, but I think that Nyamungo has always been happy with the results that we’ve come up with, and I think he’s quite happy to be pushing forward with really traditional folk music – some of the songs he sings are hundreds of years old, so to be injecting new life into them and giving them a new angle, he’s really pleased with that.’ Talking to Louis about the trend towards tribal influences in some really great electronic music in recent years (Bonobo, Mala, Jack Sparrow…), he says: ‘It’s such a rich vein of culture, and rhythmically there are so many interesting things going on. There are so many interesting percussional elements that fit in really nicely with more technological music. And I think people’s ears have widened – there’s an appreciation of music from all different sources these days. People are forever looking further and further afield for their inspiration.

‘Gilles has obviously had a hand in a lot of great music over a long period of time, and he also is plugged into a network of a more alternative scene on a global level; so anything that goes out with his seal of approval, of course that opens doors. We’ve had gigs offered to us that have come directly though Gilles’ network and we feel honoured to be a part of that scene. And Brownswood have always been incredibly hardworking on our behalf for little, or no, or even negative amounts of money at times. So we have to always be grateful to them.’ Sadly, Charles Okoko passed away not long after the release of Nyanza in 2015, leaving the other band members unsure whether to continue Owiny without the much-loved and integral member of the group. ‘It was a real tragedy to lose Charles, who was an amazing person beyond his musical skills – he was just such a lovely guy. He was the narrator of the band in a way because Nyamungo didn’t speak any English. Charles was always the bridge between the two languages, so he’s massively missed in that sense as well. At the time that he passed, we were facing up to the fact that Owiny was going to have to call it a day. ‘But my brother Jesse had been in Uganda earlier in the year and had been making music with a musician called Albert Bisaso Ssempeke, so it was a logical thing to try and bring the two things together, because the Luo tribe is massively involved in Uganda as well, so it
all makes a lot of sense – they both play instruments that are very closely linked, although they’re not exactly the same. ‘Also, Chris Morphitis, who was a member of Elmore Judd and the original group, is back playing with the band after a few years away. ‘Now the next step for us is how to move the whole thing forward. There’s talk of going to Uganda with Nyamungo and trying to connect with Luo musicians in Uganda. Then hopefully we can come back next year with something new, and take it from there…’ For now though, don’t miss their Owiny Sigoma Sound System show for a sample of the Owiny experience… ‘The sound system show is DJ-led, but with some live elements. This particular gig is going to be myself and my brother Jesse, with some Owiny input and then a lot of different African music and some interesting psychedelic Turkish stuff, so it’s kind of a random assortment of sounds that are interesting to us, with some live elements on top.’

Since opening its doors in 2015, SWX has been known predominantly for its Friday and Saturday club nights, rather than for putting on live gigs. But since proving their salt as one of Dot-to-Dot festival’s main venues earlier this year, a beautiful friendship has blossomed with monster promoters the DHP family, who are planning to bring big things to the city centre venue in the coming months. Marketing manager (and co-founder of Devon’s Lemonfest) Matt Freemantle joined SWX in June and is part of the team at the helm of its transition into one of Bristol’s great live music venues. We asked him a few questions about what’s in store at SWX… What prompted the move into putting on live gigs at SWX? A new management team came in and really wanted to turn the venue into a credible big, live music venue, with some really great acts in here and give something new to the city – another fantastic live music venue can’t do any harm!

We work quite closely with DHP and we’ve got some fantastic bits coming up with them – and hopefully long may it continue. The management have a good relationship with the guys over at DHP and we were one of the venues for Dot-to-Dot Festival and put on a really good show and had some great acts in here, so it all kind of went on from there really.
I think we’ve set the bar now, but we want to make it as diverse as possible as well We’re also working with Kilimanjaro, who are bringing in Dub FX this October, and promoting a few of our own shows, such as The Dylan Project and 911 – which should be really good fun. We want to put as much entertainment and as many acts as possible on here – so watch this space. Some of the acts you’ve got coming up – MØ, Band of Skulls and Dub FX – are huge coups for a venue that hasn’t been putting on live shows that long. Did you set your sights this high, or have you exceeded your own expectations? The plan was always to aim as high as possible, but I think DHP have been absolutely amazing in the shows they’ve put in here with us as well. After everything went so well at Dot-to-Dot, this is just testament to the hard work that everyone here has put in and what the venue has now become. Which shows are you particularly looking forward to? Personally, I think the fact that it’s Augustines’ farewell tour is going to make that a really special night. It’s one of their last shows ever and it’s going to be at SWX. It’s going to be a fantastic show and we’re sure of that – not one to be missed. Having MØ in here as well… I actually missed her at Glastonbury and I was gutted. I looked at the highlights video that BBC posted afterwards and it looked incredible. It was so busy. Her live show has a lot of energy and it’s going to be quite a bouncy night, I should imagine – lots of people jumping up and
down. She’s very, very cool. She’s one of the ones that I’m looking forward to most. I’m really intrigued about Dub FX as well, that’s going to be a really, really good one. Especially as he’s got some new music out, so there’s going to be a lot of hype around that gig. It’s going to be one hell of a party for a Tuesday night! Looking forward, what kind of acts can we expect to see at SWX? Do you have a criteria for who you book? I think we’ve set the bar now, but we want to make it as diverse as possible as well. All I can say is expect a really strong lineup of some fantastic live acts over the next six to eight months. What can you tell us about the £300,000 sound and lighting system you’ve had installed at SWX? It looks and sounds amazing, but I don’t think my words can do it justice. It’s pretty special and I think it’s got to be seen-slash-heard to be appreciated. It’s definitely taken the venue to a new level.
Another fantastic live music venue can’t do any harm And what about the SWX club nights? The club nights are going from strength to strength. They are very much a staple of what we do and the improvements we’ve made to the venue have only made them drastically better as well. We’ve got two regular club nights that we do – Fridays are Farfetched and Saturdays are Codec – both of which we are bringing down huge acts for over the coming months. We’ve got Big Narstie, Jaguar Skills, and Sigala, who is absolutely killing it at the moment.

HOWLING OWL RECORDS Joe Hatt Age: 28 Job title: Co-founder of Howling Owl Records
Continuing our exploration behind the scenes of Bristol’s nightlife, we chat to Joe Hatt, co-founder of record label Howling Owl Records, frontman of noise-rock group Spectres and general all-round pie fingerer. Though a musician in his own right, Hatt also sources talent and curates promotional events. ‘Our band finally escaped North Devon in 2011, arriving in Bristol wide eyed and thirsty for a music scene that did not exist where we came from. It wasn’t instant, but after six months we had gravitated towards some like-minded musical miscreants, particularly the bands Holy Stain and Towns, who we thought the rest of the city – and world – needed to hear; so we made a cassette compilation featuring these guys and a couple of others…and it’s all just rolled on from there.’ That cassette compilation was the seed that grew into the now fruitful Howling Owl Records. Joe and his bandmate Adrian Dutt co-own the label, signing acts and putting on nights predominantly in Bristol. ‘Primarily it is still just the two of us who ‘run the label’, but the list of people who help keep the whole thing afloat is endless. I think we can be quite difficult to work with, so the fact that we somehow convince these amazing people to be part of the nest is baffling. We should definitely mention Dom at Malt House Studios though, he records about 90 percent of the music that we put out, and is an all-round top egg. ‘When it comes to decisions regarding the acts we work with, admin, or where we are going to focus our frustration and anger at the music industry on for that day, then it is all 50/50. ‘But Adrian is a genius when it comes to illustration and design, and I think he is now resigned to giving me free reign when it comes to organising the live events.’ It was the live events that first turned my attention towards the label and to Hatt himself, having been taken along to an unexpected location at one of their label nights this summer. Howling Owl events are a combination of music and art. They are atmospheric; it feels as though everyone is involved. They are nothing less than abstract, industrial, inspiring and rambunctious – in a very good way. The event locations are the first standout feature of a typical Howling Owl night. ‘Our hand was forced a few years ago – long story – so we had to think out of the box and use non-venues as venues. For the past three or four years we’ve used graveyard crypts, art galleries, old diving schools, scout huts, empty shops, bedrooms and, most recently, a boat for our 5th Birthday which capped off the half-decade quite perfectly. Unfortunately we tend to leave thinking about logistics until a day or two before the show, so end up having to drag huge sound systems up three flights of stairs whilst trying to find an internet connection to leech off to broadcast radio from. ‘Saying all that, our favourite venue is the Arnolfini. They gave us a chance four years ago and give us complete creative control of the space once a year. For a DIY outfit such as ourselves we still can’t believe we are able to produce shows in such a place.’ Celebrating five years as a label is a pretty sure fire sign that Howling Owl have truly established themselves in the Bristol music scene. ‘There are always going to be cliques and seemingly impenetrable micro-scenes – both things we have unfairly been accused of being – but there is so much going on here, that I think everyone can end up where they want to be eventually... or even end up in a scene or a group they had no idea even existed that could end up changing their life – for the better if they’re lucky.
‘I’m not sure if we would have been able to start Howling Owl or continue it for the past five years in any city other than Bristol. It has the perfect mix of it being relatively cheap to live here (still, just about) and there are strong scenes across countless genres that, more often than not, aren’t afraid to crossover and work with others. ‘Before we moved here, the only real cultural reference points I had for Bristol were Massive Attack, Portishead, Banksy, and perhaps cider. I think for most people on the outside looking in, nothing has changed. Trying to pander towards tastemakers and journalists can often end up diluting what you would be making if all the energy was focused into creating, and thankfully I think that there are enough people in Bristol who don’t give a shit about all of the fluff and just want to create, and that’s why so much of what is happening here feels vital. We didn’t grow up here, but Bristol has helped bring out our anarchic side. ‘Although the production of our nights is mostly haphazard and has us sticking things to the walls ten minutes before we open the doors, there is always a lot of thought when it comes to programming the events, and we do our best to play with the format of live music as much as possible. ‘Howling Owl is a projection of our own tastes, and between the two of us there is a lot going on there. The fun is trying to incorporate as many sides of what we enjoy and then presenting them to an audience who may be only expecting to hear one type of music that night. We like to keep people second-guessing and also want remove people from their comfort zones. The worst thing we can imagine is someone walking away from one of our shows with the thought that it could have been a gig put on by anyone or no one.’ ‘For the first year or two of the label there was a definite ‘Howling Owl Sound’ – all shoegazy/noisy guitar bands, but since then I think the palette has evolved considerably, to the point where within the space of a few weeks we can put out a post-hardcore 12-inch from Milo’s Planes, and then futuristic-gospel-pop from Klein on a heart-shaped diamond encrusted USB stick, and no one really bats an eyelid. This is probably because no one is even paying attention, but they really should be. Our live shows try to capture all of this at once, washed down with own brand Asda lager and genuine Buckfast. ‘The best thing about doing this label for five years now is that we’ve had the chance to meet and work with an endless amount of talented and inspiring artists, but the core is still those four or five acts we started out with, who have either carried on developing their projects, or gone on to weirder and more wonderful things.’ Hatt’s advice to anyone thinking of starting up a label would be to take things slowly. ‘It’s fun learning from your mistakes, but do always be realistic. It’s easy to get carried away and do a run of 500
seven-inch singles of an unknown band as your first release, but the reality is that you’ll sell about 14 of them and then be disheartened. We started with tapes as they were a physical product that allowed us to be creative design wise, but also because they were cheap which meant we didn’t have to front a horrendous amount of money to start with. We then did a few more cassette releases, stockpiling money until we could afford to put out our first vinyl release, so yep – always be realistic, and be patient.’
There are enough people in Bristol who don’t give a shit about all of the fluff. The coming months have a nice sprinkling of Howling Owl gigs, so you can placate your lack of vitamin D with some flashing lights, progressive music and dreamy anarchy… ‘We are putting on the violinist Sarah Neufeld at The Cube in November. She is an incredible musician and a member of Arcade Fire, so a bit of a coup. Also in November we are doing our fourth YEBOAH night, which is a club-leaning collaboration with Birkhouse Records. This time round we’re working on the night with the ever-integral Sheffield imprint Hybrid Vigour. Blood Sport, Giant Swan, re:ni, Anina and Yaws all at Crofters Rights, which should be insane. We are also on the verge of announcing the line up for New Year / New Noise which will once again be filling the Arnolfini with art and noise in January. It is a ridiculous lineup spread over the course of weekend, even if we do say so ourselves.’ And on Hatt’s most prized possession of the label? ‘Objectively and subjectively, Giant Swan are better than all of us and you.’ Howling Owl are a PR to amazing talent, noticing it and then bringing it to the masses; curating events in a truly unique and thoroughly entertaining way. It feels that with each gig he is giving himself whole-heartedly, and it pays off. There is rawness, with serious talent at the core. We are lucky to have such unique talent on our door step, and even luckier to have Howling Owl open the door for us. Get involved
