THOSE QUESTIONS...

THOSE QUESTIONS...

Band

Band

6. What was the last book you read? How Music Works by David Byrne.

1. What have you learned today? I need to go outside during the day more often.

6. What was the last book you read? I just re-read The Damnation Game by Clive Barker.

2. Favorite track of all time? I know this is a dodge, but I really don’t have a favorite song. It all depends on my mood.

7. Favorite thing on TV? Lately... Stranger Things.

2. Favourite track of all time? Journey in Satchidananda by Alice Coltrane.

7. Favourite thing on TV? I don’t watch TV at home, but some of the internet programs I’ve got into are, obviously, Twin Peaks and Adventure Time. Also any BBC documentary by David Attenborough.

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? This is recent discovery and it’s probably good for 3am: Van Doumen 02 – Photay #2.

8. Are you afraid of anything? Being sick or being unwell physically. I’m ok with insects but not a big fan of centipedes… Too many legs!

4. Who are your top three acts right now? Three acts that I recently saw and blow my mind are Eric Chenaux, Richard Dawson and Senyawa.

9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... Too many things… I will tell you in person.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Making shoes, bag or clothes – making something. Living in the countryside, in the woods, by the sea.

10. What are you doing tomorrow? Writing tunes for new Yama Warashi album

1. What have you learned today? My friend Rozi told me how you make plywood. There is a big machine that peels the whole thing to make a giant thin sheet of wood. It’s like a giant horizontal pencil sharpener peeling an entire tree.

soundcloud.com/yamawarashi // FB.com/yamawarashi // @yamayamamusic

3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Years ago, I used to have a habit of throwing on the song With A Heavy Heart by Does It Offend You, Yeah? whenever I was at a particular friend’s place late at night. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? If you’re talking about acts I’ve come across in more recent years, maybe HEALTH, Youth Code and S U R V I V E. That’s just three that I was listening to earlier on a playlist. That being said, there are so many other artists that deserve just as much attention – I feel bad only picking three.

8. Are you afraid of anything? Treading water alone in the middle of the ocean. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I have metal staples in my left lung, so I can never get an MRI scan. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? Rehearsing with the band for the upcoming tour.

5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Probably something art or design oriented. It would have to be something creative and physical.

28 // LOCAL TALENT

DBS MUSIC PRESENTS LOCAL TALENT

LUCY

Local producer Lucy Helyer has been dominating the playing field for Bristol’s best up-and-coming for the past few months, and it’s with very good reason. Operating professionally as L U C Y, she occupies the same dark, atmospheric, spacey soundscapes that have been trademarked by other Bristol artists like Tricky and Kahn – adding her own energy to the mix to define her unique sound, which is a blend of grime, dubstep and shadowy bass music. At just 20 years old, there’s a palpable sense that she has entered the defining years of her career. While she’s been working at her craft since the age of 15, it seems that she’s now hit her stride as a producer – recently making it to the finals of Red Bull Music Academy’s Riddim Rally, after winning her regional heat against some pretty established local names: Sir Hiss, LTHL, Neffa-T, Lemzly Dale, Lington and, Slugabed. Her recently self-released Mixtape 01 feels like a fully coherent project, with 13 really strong tracks that come together to create a definably L U C Y sound. The follow-up release has already been snagged by London’s Trapdoor Records, and will hopefully be coming out in the next few months. ‘When I was a teenager, I used to go to Basement’s free youth music sessions about three times a week. I wanted to learn how to DJ, but they taught me how to produce as well. It used to be at Unicorns, but when they moved to the Station it became quite difficult to get to the equipment. So when I was 16, I got a job and I saved up for a Mac.’ Lucy’s sound is unmistakably Bristol, so it’s not surprising to

learn that it was the people making music in her hometown that first inspired her musically. ‘Kahn and Neek, especially, were the first people to inspire me – that certain vibe of their music. Then My Nu Leng and that kind of darker bass sound of Bristol. I was also inspired by going out to dub events from a young age, and just generally Bristol being such a mish mash of sounds – and I hope that comes out in my music.’

People will judge a female artist’s face and appearance, then judge their music afterwards, which is something I didn’t want to happen Lucy has made a point of trying to retain an element of elusiveness as an artist, which can be particularly difficult for a female operating in an industry where men far outweigh any other gender. This adds a certain exoticism to the idea of the female producer, making it hard to avoid the preyful eyes of the media looking at more than musical output alone. ‘I saw an article yesterday that was like “Top 20 Hottest Female DJs” – stuff like that makes me feel sick. Why can’t people just appreciate the music? People will judge a female artist’s face and appearance, then judge their music afterwards, which is something I didn’t want to happen.

LOCAL TALENT // 29

make the difference of whether an up-and-coming artist gets to ride the wave of their ‘breakthrough’, or not. As well as being selected for (and winning) the regional heats of the Red Bull Music Academy Riddim Rally, they’ve also put her on the same lineups as the likes of Sir Spyro, as well as asking her to take part in the Bristol leg of their #NormalNotNovelty female-only workshops, where she led a production workshop. ‘I’m such a big fan of some of the people I was against in the Riddim Rally. I’ve never been so nervous in my whole life – especially because a couple of days before, I was looking for inspiration to practice war riddims, as such, and I found this song in a mix, and I was like, “This. I need to make something like this on the day.” Then I looked at it and it was a Limington song! I could have been against the guy that made it. It threw me off a bit and it made me even more nervous. ‘Red Bull have blessed me so much. I’m a big fan of Sir Spyro and meeting him was amazing. He’s a really humble guy, and he’s really talented and he’s really hard working. It’s nice to meet one of your idols, and them be nice and talk to you and take the time to explain certain production techniques – he went through how he gets his kick to sound the way it does. He’s a really sound guy.

‘I also hope it means – if I manage to do it correctly – that my music will have a certain longevity. My favourite artists have an air of mystery about them and I think it’s nice to have that, and not have everything out on social media, because it can build an atmosphere around the music.’ While she wants to avoid certain traps of being a female musician, there is an element of femininity to her work that is important. Rather than trying to fit into a mould shaped predominantly by male producers, she’s doing her own thing, which can only help lead the way for other female producers. One of these elements is the use of female vocals, which, on the whole, is not that common in instrumental grime tracks. ‘It wasn’t particularly deliberate to use female vocals, but a lot of my female friends are singers. They also sit really nicely on the songs – a lot of male vocals are a bit too low to actually sit, and you can do a lot of cool stuff with female vocals.’ While she’s not actually on the label, Lucy could be considered a very good friend of Bristol’s all-female record label Saffron Records, who have been helping push her music over the last year. ‘Saffron have been so supportive of my music and spreading positivity – sharing my stuff and just supporting in

general. It’s really, really been helpful.’ Lucy has also been getting a lot of love from Bristol tastemakers The Blast, who initially booked her for Sequences festival this year on their new Bristol Stage. As one of Bristol’s biggest bass music festivals, it would have seen her sharing a lineup with the likes of Chase & Status, Kahn and Neek, and Mefjus. Unfortunately it was a few days before her dissertation hand in, so she had to turn the opportunity down. ‘I couldn’t go because my mum was going to cuss me out too much. I would have failed my whole uni degree if I’d gone. Hopefully next year, if I keep it up, then I can play Sequences, because that would be amazing. ‘The support system for me in Bristol is mad. The guys from the Blast found me through my friend, who was bigging me up to them. They just became really supportive of what I was doing. I’m a big fan of The Blast and Motion and all these places, so I’m just happy to have their support and hopefully I can do them proud!’ Outside of Bristol, Lucy also has the attention of people like Radar Radio and Red Bull Music Academy. The weight of these institutions behind you is hard-earned and can really help

The support system for me in Bristol is mad ‘I gained a fair few followers from taking part in Riddim Rally, and generally speaking it gave me a lot more confidence in my production. Before that, when people would give me compliments about my music, I kind of wouldn’t believe them. But when there are people actually voting for your songs in front of your face, it does give you that confidence boost like, “Okay, I am a producer now.” While we greedily await her new project on Trap Door, we’ll be continuing to rinse her Mixtape 01, which is available on Spotify and Soundcloud. And you can catch L U C Y live this month at In:Motion on 6 October for The Blast’s TQD X Critical X Swing Ting event.

KOJEY RADICAL Multi-media artist, poet and spoken-word-meets-rap artist Kojey Radical has a fire in his belly. The level of creativity, determination and raw talent in one person is hardly possible to conceive. At only 24 years old, the Hoxton-raised British-Ghanaian creative has three full releases to his name, staunch credibility as a poet and artist, and also heads up Push Crayons – the mysterious London creative collective comprising art, fashion and music. Although he only played his first headline show two years ago, his brilliant 2016 album 23Winters earned him two nominations at last year’s MOBO Awards, including Best Newcomer. Coming into music through other artistic mediums encourages a freedom to experiment and craft a truly personal sonic tag that other UK rappers tied to a genre might lack. Where a visual artist is expected to produce a completely different body of work from their last, followers of a musician can conversely feel disappointed when they change their sound. This isn’t a concern that holds Kojey Radical back. ‘Coming from an art background, getting into the music industry was an interesting one for me. I’ve always been quite insular with my process and that’s what made it special. That’s what people hear when they listen to my music, the fact it is these really personal moments in this really expressive sound. ‘I’ve never really considered changing my process. If you like it, you like it; if you don’t, you don’t – that’s alright.’ Nonetheless, he released new album In God’s Body this September to rapturous applause from both fans and critics. The new 13-track record covers hip hop, trap, spoken word, electronica, jazz, and even funk with the Pharrell-esque Love Interlude; but always with a darkness to the production that matches the distinct gruffness of his voice and ferocity in his delivery. And despite the variety throughout the album, almost everyone that’s heard me play it over the last few weeks has – within a couple of tracks – asked who we’re listening to, making a mental note of the name. ‘I was painting and drawing from the time I could pick up a crayon. That was the first thing that helped me realise my ideas. After that, my family encouraged me to be expressive, because they could see that was all I really cared about. They encouraged me to do other things like dance and writing. ‘That’s important, because without that, I don’t think I would have the diversity in my palette and the versatility I would need to stand out in an industry that’s quite saturated.’ Choosing a word as provocative as radical as part of your stage name seems like a bold move, and while he’s definitely earned his namesake – dealing openly with themes of racism, exoticism, exploitation and social injustice – Kojey Radical didn’t set out to lead a political revolution. Born Kwadwo Adu Genfi Amponsah, the name actually comes from a comic book cover he drew when he was younger, portraying himself as the eponymous superhero Kojey Radical. ‘As I started to progress in music and art, and figured out how I wanted to move and represent myself, the name just kind of earned itself. The idea of going against the grain and believing in something and fighting for something – especially when the intent of that is for the sake of positivity – I think that’s how people communicate radicalism in their work. I personally attribute it to more of a state of mind.

When you get these opportunities, it can feel like a moment of sight to a blind man ‘We all have voices and it’s important for us to use our voices in some way, shape or form. I think if more people did it, it wouldn’t feel so alien. It shouldn’t feel so strange to do it.’ Kojey Radical’s lyrics are probably most powerful because he’s not telling us what to think, he’s not telling us how to vote and he’s not alienating listeners with different life experiences. Instead, his work hones in on the everyday, relatable experiences that help make these huge themes tangible. Take the track After

PREVIEW // 31 Winter, for example, which deals with black slavery: Can’t rewrite the past / No way, that’s a long story / Saw Roots before I saw Toy Story. ‘I take inspiration from the conversations we have every day. That’s the dialogue that’s important to communicate – things that feel personal. The idea that my work was social or political was alien to me, because I never considered that when I was making it. I was just making music and talking about the things that everybody was talking about day to day. Like much of Kojey’s work, In God’s Body is rife with collaboration, with features on nearly every track from guests including Ghetts, Shola Ama, Obongjayar and Chewing Gum creator Michaela Coel. However, it still feels very much like a fluid solo album without any sense of collaboration for the sake of it, or raising each other’s profiles. ‘It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time – have a project with people that I know and respect musically, and have them fit in and blend different sounds. ‘That’s always a very difficult process, but actually listening to it top to bottom, sometimes you can’t tell who’s coming in and out of what song – and that was something we did intentionally.’ Going well beyond the album-tells-a-story trope, lyrics carry through the album like a storybook. The record opens with the hopeful Collard collaboration Utopia and closes with Dystopia: In God’s Body – a spoken word poem penned by Kojey and read by Michaela Coel; the final words echoing his anti-industry track Icarus: I hope their love for my expression is truly one that lasts / and they never see a day they clip my wings. / In God’s Body, amen. ‘Everyone I work with, I get along with. We sit down, we talk, we have conversations. We talk about what we want to actually do in music, rather than what song we want to make or what we want a song to do in the charts. ‘Collard, for example, is someone I’ve known for some time and we go back and forth with writing so fluidly that those songs are maybe two out of 50. ‘Ghetts has been supporting me from back when I was doing just poetry. We were waiting to get to a point where I developed through my music confidently enough for us to do a collaboration that made sense. It was definitely a big dream of mine to do a record with him and, again, that’s just one record of many. ‘Shola Ama, I remember I had written a lyric about her and I was sitting with my producer and I said, “Wouldn’t it be cool if Shola was on a track?” And he was like, “Yeah, it would be.” He called her there and then, and she came down to the studio hours later – it was so surreal. ‘Me and Potè worked on Dynamite for about a year – I don’t know why it took us so long, we just wanted it to be this masterpiece of a record. Almost like All of the Lights by Kanye, collecting together all of these really big musical parts that helped bring together this sound that feels familiar but is still really different and alien.’

The idea that my work was social or political was alien to me, because I never considered that when I was making it With headline shows in Bristol, London and Manchester this October, and a spot on most credible ones-to-watch lists, Kojey talks about how it feels to have the collective eyes of the industry on you, especially after last year’s double MOBO nomination: ‘It was nice to feel that gratification for my work, it was nice to have that learning experience – it was definitely a learning experience for me. ‘When you get these opportunities, it can feel like a moment of sight to a blind man. This one particular moment when you get to open your eyes and see all these possibilities and things that you dreamed about, and the next it’s gone. And you have learn to accept your reality and keep creating for whatever it is that you chose to create for in the first place – and that was simply to make myself happy. ‘I treated the whole thing like a learning experience rather than a hype to my career, because we’re going to have more high points, we’re going to have more victories. The fact that the attention is there means we’re in prime position to do exactly what we intend to.’

JORDAN RAKEI

PREVIEW // 33 ‘I got an email from Disclosure saying, “Hey, we love your stuff, we’d love to get in a session. When are you in London next?” It was amazing how it worked out, because I’d just moved to London the week before. ‘We wrote that song together. I got in to the session and they said, “Usually we produce and we hand it over to the singer and you write, but we know you’re a producer and a beat maker, so do you want to help us make the beat as well?” ‘We made and tracked it all in that one day, and then there was this big wait until it came out to see if it was going to make the album. The exposure that came after that was amazing. People have come up to me after my shows and said they heard me from that album. And loads of people from that album – Nao, Sam Smith and The Weeknd – have DM’d me saying they love my music, so that was mental. The album is stacked full of massive features, so to be on the same release is crazy. That was massive for me.’

I can’t please everyone, so I’m just going to keep making music While Jordan’s output can, without doubt, stand up on its own merit – it’s impossible to not appreciate it a little more knowing that he writes, sings, plays most of the instrumentation and produces all his own records. ‘I started off purely as a producer, or more so a beat maker – as I think they’re two different things. I was making beats in my bedroom from a young age, and then for friends who rapped. Over time I started singing the choruses that went over their tunes, and they said, “Why don’t you make your own stuff?” That’s when I started learning about production. ‘I love all parts of the process, so I’m always quite hands on in doing it all. For this album, I did all the songwriting, all the instruments and all the production. Doing it that way is best for me, because I know how to create what’s in my head. I still want to find my own sound and find who I am as a producer and artist. ‘I was producing Wallflower with my drummer and we might get to the studio at 10am and by 1pm we’ve layered everything – 20 tracks down, we’re just pumping it out. But then it was a matter of trying to realise what we need to take out: did we go too far here? Are there way too many layers there?

After self-releasing his debut album Cloak last year, supremely talented singer songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordan Rakei was scooped up by Ninja Tune after someone from the label heard one of his tracks playing in café and Shazamed it. Easily one of the most respected record labels in the world and (along with sister label Big Dada) home to some of our generation’s most important artists, from Bonobo to Kate Tempest and Wiley, a bedroom producer couldn’t dream up a better fairytale scenario. Now with the weight of Ninja Tune behind him, the 25-yearold New Zealand-born artist has been earmarked as a serious up-and-coming talent – making that elusive step from a Soundcloud artist to someone with the potential for genuine longevity and, dare we say, his own name-checkable sound.

There remains a discernable Rakei sound that can be found somewhere between the hi hat, jazz piano and electronic grooves His new album Wallflower, released this September, makes a fairly significant departure from the jazzy, soul-driven, electro rhythms of Cloak; however, there remains a discernable Rakei sound that can be found somewhere between the hi hat, jazz piano and electronic grooves. ‘I still think it’s soul music, but it’s not traditional soul music. I kind of think of it as ethereal alternative hip hop / soul – there are influences from Radiohead to D’Angelo,’ Jordan tells us, as we get him on the phone to talk about the new release and upcoming headline tour. Written in the wake of a move from Brisbane, Australia to London, Wallflower sees Jordan delve further into singer songwriter territory, whereas Cloak feels somewhat

more led by the music, with vocals – however good– as accompaniment. This change in direction, however, is nothing to do with label involvement. In fact, the album was already half written when Jordan got the call from Ninja Tune. ‘I showed them the new songs and they said, “This is great, can we sign you now?” ‘For Wallflower, I wrote all of it on guitar and piano – which I’ve never done before – then took the songs and produced them up. I always like to change up my sound, otherwise I feel like I flatline creatively, so I’m always nervous before a release. But because this album is very different, I have no idea how it’s going to go down… ‘Joni Mitchell and Prince are good examples of where they just write albums and are not attached to a sound, they’re capturing a snapshot in time. That’s what I see this as – I can’t please everyone, so I’m just going to keep making music. But this is the most nervous I’ve been before a release. ‘It’s amazing how much the association of being on Ninja has helped. They have this clout in the industry – they post something and people are interested. I’ve had a lot of people that have come on board after my first few singles from this album. The Ninja push, it’s a whole other beast.’ While being part of the Ninja bubble is a new experience in itself, this isn’t Jordan’s first experience working with a label. After moving to London, he became friends with Rhythm Section founder Bradley Zero, who encouraged him to redirect his production skills toward a handful of dancefloor tunes. These turned into the four-track EP Joy, Ease, Lightness, which he quietly released on Zero’s label last year under the alias Dan Kye. And before that, other notable studio time includes his contribution to Disclosure’s 2015 Grammy-nominated Caracel, co-writing, co-producing and voicing the number one album’s closing track, Masterpiece. The electronic duo reached out to Jordan literally days after arriving in London, after they were tipped off by a friend who had seen Jordan play a tiny basement bar in Australia.

‘They’re the decisions that are the toughest and that’s where collaboration helps, because I might have layered six guitars and my crazy piano parts. But at the end of the day, all you need is four parts that sound really good sitting next to each other, and I think making those decisions was a massive learning curve for me in this album.’

The Ninja push, it’s a whole other beast This different production approach also brings a new live show for Jordan as he heads out on a headline European tour, which stops in to Thekla on 12 October. ‘I’m bringing my biggest band yet. I’ve got two guitarists, a percussion player, bass player and then me on synths, piano and guitar. ‘There are so many layers on this album, and I’m not really a big fan of having stuff on track, so I’d rather have someone play all the parts. We’re able to recreate the really dense production in a live environment. ‘It’s going to be this massive wall of sound in a small venue, which is what we’re looking forward to more than playing Sheperd’s Bush in London.’ To follow up the album release, Jordan is already working on a remixes project, including some dancefloor reworks from his Dan Kye alias, as well as some other exciting collaborations. ‘It’s going to be several different remixes and acoustic versions, which are sounding really nice and almost like their own songs in themselves. It will probably be released early next year – we’ve still got a way to go on it. I’m trying to get my friend Loyle Carner to jump on something!’

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

EAT SLEEP DRAG REPEAT Mike Pony Job title: Creator of Eat Sleep Drag Repeat, Horseplay and Submerge Festival

Since launching two years ago, drag night Eat Sleep Drag Repeat has swept across Bristol at a rapid rate, showcasing over a dozen of the finest drag queens to come out of American reality TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race. It all started when events director Mike Pony saw a gap

in the market and decided to create a space for RuPaul’s Drag Race queens to bring their touring shows to Bristol – simultaneously putting drag culture firmly on Bristol’s map. The Eat Sleep Drag Repeat founder is also the brain behind queer disco Horseplay and newly-birthed electronic music and digital arts festival Submerge. After getting comfy with a beer in hand at Watershed, Mike talks us through the birth of ESDR and the politics that surround drag culture and Bristol’s queer community. ‘I originally studied Performance Art at Middlesex University in London. After moving to Bristol, I found an amazing performance art festival called In-Between Time, so I began

working with them for a couple of years as an artist and, eventually, as a producer. ‘When I first moved to Bristol, I felt like I needed to make performance art. I was making one-to-one performance pieces that explored the boundaries of intimacy with strangers, but eventually I felt I didn’t need to make performance art anymore. That’s when I stopped being a performance artist and became a queer club night promoter and DJ. What was lacking for me in the city was a place for queer people to hang out off the gay scene and listen to good music. I just wanted to create a space where me and my friends could hang out and listen to good music.’

These performers were touring across the UK, but never coming to Bristol. That’s when I wondered if I could be the person to make it happen In 2011, he created queer-leaning art-disco-club Horseplay – described by The Guardian as ‘Bristol’s best gay dance party’ – but Mike didn’t want to stop there. ‘I was in Glasgow at a festival with my boyfriend at the time and we noticed the AAA Girls featuring RPDR queens were playing at a club. I just thought, “Why aren’t we having these artists perform in Bristol?” ‘These performers were touring across the UK, but never coming to Bristol. That’s when I wondered if I could be the person to make it happen. Two years on and Eat Sleep Drag Repeat have showcased the likes of Alaska, Jinkx Monsoon, Milk and Sharon Needles to name a few, alongside some of the best handpicked contemporary drag acts from across the UK, who reflect drag queens, kings, bio queens, queens of colour and disabled artists, to ensure everyone is fairly represented in the art form. ‘The best show I think ESDR ever showcased was our first show with Latrice Royale. We really didn’t know at that point the kind of energy these artists brought with them to their shows and how veracious the fans can be, but when Latrice performed we couldn’t believe how crazy the crowd went for it. She really blew the roof off with her performance.’ But where there is success, inevitably comes imitation and Mike says he is slowly starting to see other promoters across the city try and take a slice of the cake by booking Rupaul’s Drag Race acts.

What was lacking for me in the city was a place for queer people to hang out off the gay scene and listen to good music ‘When we started ESDR, we had noticed a gap in the market in Bristol, and because of my background in art and curating performances, I felt like I wanted to bring something different to the table. We always try and book conceptually interesting artists who are doing things that push the boundaries in the art of drag. ‘I’ve seen a lot of misogynistic and racist drag acts before and it’s something I’m not interested in doing. Our shows have always been about presenting mainstream artists from the television series alongside really great support artists who push the boundaries. ‘I think it’s inevitable that shows like Christmas Queens at Motion this December, featuring RPDR queens, are going to happen, and to be honest I look forward to seeing it done on such a large scale. ‘MJR Group who are booking the event have been excellent at being sensitive to the fact ESDR also takes place in Bristol, as they don’t want to intrude on the independent business in the city. But there are other promoters out there where I

THE INFLUENCERS // 35 worry that the quality of the show is lost, along with the care and attention that goes into making the audience feel safe.’ Eat Sleep Drag Repeat’s snowballing popularity reflects the ever-growing fan base for the reality TV show, and with RuPaul getting nominated for a second Emmy Award last month, it has reinforced the fact that drag and gender performativity is finding itself in the spotlight of mainstream media. ‘When I first starting watching RPDR it was many years ago, and it was reassuring to see references that, as a queer man, I felt applied to me. In the most recent season for instance, they covered the shooting at Pulse Nightclub, living with cancer, HIV and loads of other issuebased things, so it’s really nice to see issues that affect queer people being discussed in the mainstream media. ‘I think the TV show has helped open drag up to women and straight women as well. It’s allowed them to play around or over-accentuate their femininity by playing with their gender or being a drag king or queen. Overall, I think it’s had a really interesting affect on mainstream culture and giving people permission to play with their gender through dressing up and performance.’ Taking a step back and admiring drag culture as a whole, you can’t help but notice the unbalanced reputation of drag queens and drag kings in public events. Although ESDR have booked the likes of drag king John Smith before, Bristol still has a long way to go in fairly representing both kings and queens alike. ‘There’s an amazing new night in Bristol called Brizzle Boiz – it’s a drag king show that happens in Smoke and Mirrors near the Hippodrome. I think Brizzle Boiz are doing a lot for the politics of drag kings and making it clear that there are really talented drag kings in Bristol and around the UK.’ Playing a huge part in creating an alternative queer nightlife community for Bristol with the likes of Horseplay and Eat Sleep Drag Repeat, Mike has a lot to say on the future of Bristol’s queer nightlife culture. He talks us through how he sees the future of Bristol’s scene: ‘Six years ago, we felt that the Bristol gay scene at the time wasn’t giving us what we wanted, so we made Horseplay to create a space to hear the music we wanted to hear. ‘Since then, I think other spaces have become popular like Don’t Tell Your Mother and Thorny, who are all catering for slightly different audiences. I think the gay scene itself in Bristol hasn’t really moved in twenty years though. When you go to a gay club or bar in Bristol you feel like you’ve gone back to the 90s. There are clubs in Bristol selling a pre-packaged idea of what it is to be gay and playing the worst possible music. ‘I think in 2017, gay people feel more comfortable at parties that would typically be dominated by heterosexuals. As it currently stands, it’s ok to go to places like Motion and exhibit homosexual behaviour and be openly gay – most of the time, in most of the city. Saying that though, there are places like

Old Market Assembly who have really embraced the idea of queer nights and also female led nights. ‘I think that’s the future - having places that hold temporary queer spaces rather than permanent queer spaces.’ Over the next few months, Eat Sleep Drag Repeat with be bringing more Rupaul’s Drag Race stars including Season 9’s Valentine and winner Sasha Velour to the city, alongside a fantastic local lineup of boundary pushing drag artists. You

can also keep your eyes peeled for future Horseplay events and more information on the second Submerge digital arts festival.

The Canteen emerged out of the creative inspiration and collective efforts of a bunch of Stokes Croft and Bristol brilliants. With free live music every night, expect gentler tones from Sunday – Wednesday spanning folk, jazz and acapella ensembles, then Thursday – Saturday sees things ramp up from 10pm, when the tables are cleared for the unavoidable rip-roaring dancing times.

NAMIWA JAZZ

Singer-songwriter Namiwa Jazz performs hints of jazz, soul and contemporary r’n’b with her self-styled distinctive vocals. This star is promised big things with the imminent album Robinhood on the horizon, so be sure to grab your tickets now.

Wormwood

feat. Afon

Not a band, or a style (though she has both) singer-songwriter Namiwa Jazz hints at jazz, soul and contemporary R’n’B in her selfstyled Afro-Twang vocals. The gutsy lyrics and distinctive vocal quality of 2017’s live acoustic EP T Time is a tantalising foretaste of imminent album RobinHood and a great reason to catch her live act ASAP

Sistema This pounding rhythm collective may hail from East Bristol but their beating heart lies in the jungles of Northern Brazil. With twenty-plus drummers they make Bahia beats you will not be able to ignore.

Fri 20th Portmanteau

So - how many jazzy types from Leeds does it take to hit the perfect groove? Nine, it seems, if vigorous young soul-hop collective Portmanteau are anything to go by. Inspired the likes of The Meters and Tower of Power as much as Snarky Puppy and Robert Glasper the band seek out all that is smartly danceable when jazz meets funk with an ear to hip-hop.
