26 INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT
Res One Last month, Bristol hip-hop heads were blessed with the long-awaited album launch party for Bristol’s very own Res One. Recognised as a member of Bristol’s leading hip-hop collective Split Prophets, Res has already achieved a high status as an MC. So when it was announced he was not only releasing his debut solo album Delph Efficacy, but he was also holding his very own launch party at The Crofters Rights, Nitelife knew we had to get down there and check it out for ourselves. Just minutes before opening time for his royally hyped album launch, Res One sat down to discuss his latest release and the night he had lined up ahead. You could tell by the constant buzzing of his mobile that he was a very busy man, so we appreciated the time he took to sit down and chat about his latest work before the night began. The charismatic MC always fills the stage with energy whenever he’s with his Split Prophets family. Consisting of local MCs, Datkid, Upfront MC and Bill Next, to name a few, SP have been running the Bristol hip-hop scene for a few years now. But now it’s the time to get to know Res as a solo performer and learn about the MC away from the SP collective. Straight off the bat Res One described his sound as boom bap hip-hop. “Obviously it’s got a UK influence, but I’ve got influence from all over the world too,” he says. The Bristol bred MC starting experimenting with music at a young age before later forming the Split Prophets collective. “I was about fifteen and I did a lot of graffiti back then and skating and stuff like that. A couple of my mates who are playing tonight (Evermoor Sound) got me into rapping. It wasn’t serious until we were about 18-19 and met DJ/producer Badhabitz, and that’s when the Splits Prophets started to become the movement that it is today. Res has had a number of successful releases with Split Prophets members, like their 2011 EP Scribbled Thoughts, the 2013 Datkid collaboration in Drugs, Booze and Dental Issues, right through to 2014’s Upfront MC’s Upfront and Personal. The hype backing these releases and their unique sounds has across the English Channel, creating opportunities for the SP collective to tour Europe. So with all this success, it was important to find out why Res decided to finally fly solo with this album release. “I was writing a lot of music and we (Split Prophets) weren’t all connecting as much as we used to. I guess I just wanted to be able to do stuff off my own back and I’ve never had any solo stuff really out there before. I figured I needed to get something out there to show my side of things and how I’m not just a member of SP”. Mainly though, the motivation behind this creation comes down to one thing and one thing alone -his passion for the music he creates. Unlike other artists who might drop a new release and sneak back into the shadows again, Res went all out and decided to throw an album launch party to celebrate the release and hard work put in to the making of the album. “We’ve never done it before so I figured why not. I was a cleaner here for a small while so I know the place inside out. I didn’t have to pay to hire out the venue, so it kind of all worked out in the right time. There was enough to make something happen and I was just inspired to do it so I did”. But despite feeling confident about the night ahead, Res shared his motive behind always getting it spot on. “The first time I ever held a microphone was at Joe Public’s Nightclub years ago and I fucked up. After that I thought if I ever grab a microphone again, then I’ve got to come correct”. Moving on to talk about the release itself, I asked the question a lot of people were thinking, and that was where the intriguing title of this album comes from. “Basically I was reading something about self-belief and I believe if you envision something, it will happen”. Res went on to describe the honest thought process behind the meaning of the title. “Originally it was going to be ‘Self Efficacy’, but then I thought that’s fucking cheesy, so I switched it to ‘Delph’ because it’s an old school word for crockery and vinyl”. The album title might be a little bit confusing, with Res admitting some people still call it ‘Delph
INTERVIEW // LOCAL TALENT 27 Efficiency’ instead, but there’s no doubt it hasn’t stopped anyone appreciating the content of the weighty listen. To the MC’s surprise, the response was overwhelming in the run up to the release. “I’ve had an amazing response with pre-orders of the album, downloads and everything else and even and videos are getting a good response too. I’ve stacked 10 videos already, but obviously they won’t all be released at the same time”. Talking about the creation of the album in his own house was amusingly like hearing the legend of Stones Throw Records’ Peanut Butter Wolf’s house, when he housed hip-hop legends Madlib and MF Doom during the creation of Madvillainy- but on a Bristol scale. “A lot of people I worked with were already my mates, so for example Leaf Dog and I jumped and recorded a track there and then. Netherlands MC BlabberMouf came and stayed and in that time we did two videos, made the track there and then and recorded it straight away. A lot of it’s quite organic. George Chro lived in my house for quite a while and Fingerfood lives at my house too. So there’s different people but we are all connected. We are all connected through my house and through the different families in Bristol”. Even when you try to find out more about the artist himself in the creation of the album, the humble artist is too busy praising those who worked with him on the debut solo release. “It’s hard because I’m not one of those people who are constantly like ‘yeah check my shit, I’m this guy’ etc…Other people on the album, like Evil Ed are legends. In my opinion he’s produced some of the most classic tunes in the country, so to have a track
off him with Eddie Scratch on the cuts is a blessing. Reklews and Simiah who made all the interlude beats are just amazing. Everyone has really blessed me because everyone has come through with some really good shit. For me, I’m just thankful that it’s all come together”. So what’s next for Res One and Split Prophets? Aside from the debut solo album to come from Res, it sounds like we’ve got a lot to listen out for with a new Split Prophets crew album in the works. “We’re deep into making the album right now, we just want to get the right sound and get it completely correct. It’s been such a long time coming we don’t want to drop something that’s half assed”. But most importantly, Split Prophet’s own Datkid will be returning which means more mind altering rhymes can be expected to follow. “Datkid being away for a while has put a downer on everyone. It’s been difficult but he is gonna come out in the next couple of weeks and there is gonna be a lot of stuff recorded because he has been writing the best shit he has ever written”. After a quick chat with Res we hung around for the launch night for Delph Efficacy, featuring support from NLP, Physikks, Simiah, DJ Fingerfood and George Chro. Even a pretty shoddy but hilarious scarecrow interpretation of Datkid was made to join his mate on stage for a couple of numbers before being passed around the crowd. The night proved Res One’s debut solo release is already a hit amongst friends and fans, and like most Split Prophet orientated nights, gave heads chance to indulge in their heavy boom bap inspired beats and rhymes. Its nights like this that remind me why I’m proud to live in Bristol.

28 PREVIEW
Kurupt FM & Lobster Boy In:Motion Launch, 2 Oct
Ravers, get ready. Bristol’s annual In:Motion series kicks off this October and takes us right up to the New Year, with 26 specially-curated nights hosted by the likes of Bonobo, Groove Armada, Katy B and Hospitality, plus Motion favourites, The Blast and Run. The launch event on 2 October will see Kurupt FM in Room 1 and Bristol’s own Redlight AKA Hugh Pescod taking over Room 2 with his Lobster Boy label, with sets from Melé & Slick Don, Mak & Pasteman, Mella Dee and Christophe. Lobster Boy is quickly picking up steam, with Hugh’s debut Redlight album X Colour due for release on the label on 30 October. X Colour already looks like it will be a huge boost
for the steadily-growing Lobster Boy label, with all three tracks released so far from the album completely blowing up: ‘Gold Teeth’ – heard in every festival tent across the nation – ‘Lion Jungle’, and most recently, ‘Threshold’, which debuted on BBC Radio 1 as Annie Mac’s Hottest Record in the World. ‘Threshold’ looks set for similar success to last year’s late-summer tune, ‘9Ts’; so expect to hear it everywhere this clubbing season and beyond. Nitelife enjoyed a little preview of a ‘Threshold’ remix in the works already, as Hugh fiddled around
with it while we FaceTimed him to talk about X Colour and the Lobster Boy takeover at In:Motion. “‘Threshold’ is a homage to Bristol for me,” he says. “That’s growing up with people like Reprazent, Massive Attack, Portishead; this tune is my closest thing to that sound.” Among the hardestworking producers around at the moment, Hugh has nailed sounds across a multitude of genres, whether under his now-discarded drum and bass alias DJ Clipz, UK bass project Animal Youth (look out for a new Animal Youth track coming out on
“WE’VE DONE LOBSTER BOY EVENTS BEFORE, BUT NOT QUITE LIKE THIS.”
Lobster Boy this year) or dance music under the pseudonym Redlight. Initially, Hugh set up his Lobster Boy label to take back creative control of his own music, but he began using his long-honed skills to work with other producers, putting out successful tracks like Melé’s recent summer hit ‘Ambience’. “I want Lobster Boy in 10 years time to be a serious label which isn’t just doing dance music, but doing albums. And that’s another reason why I released X Colour on it - I’m backing my own label. “A lot of people have their own labels but then release their album on a major. “It’s early days, but I’ve got a good bunch of people and I’m really excited about it. It’s about not
PREVIEW 29
rushing it and getting the right music out.” Hugh has talked previously about creating tracks as though they were different film genres, which makes sense when you compare tracks like ‘Lost in Your Love’ to ‘What you Talking About’. He’s also described his process as creating different colours to make up a picture – hence the new album name X Colour. “On the album, ‘Threshold’ is soul-based, then you’ve got ‘Gold Teeth’ and ‘Lion Jungle’, and the rest is all new music. It’s mainly like R&B, dark vocals - quite melancholic really. There are only one or two house tracks on there. It’s mainly broken beat. My kind of beats. “I just wanted to make something that was a bit different to what was going on now, and not the next obvious thing. “I spent so long just making dance music and it gets to a point where you do get frustrated. I love making club music and I will always, always make club music – but you can’t sit down and eat the same dinner every night. “If I make an album of just dance tunes, there’s no point making an album. To me an album is a long player. An album is about ten tracks that all sit together cohesively on a record to make a bigger picture: a film. “Four top 40 singles and a few fillers – that isn’t a picture to me, that’s like an advertisement break between watching a fucking Gordon Ramsey programme. “What I’m trying to sell is the album, it’s not a singles-based project. I don’t care if I sell 10 singles or none, what I care about is that people listen to the album as a whole. They can think: Oh, I like that and I don’t like that. But it’s done in 40 minutes, I got
from A to B, and it was a good journey.” For someone who shies away from commercial success so much, it does seem like Hugh has the ability to bang out an instant chart hit when he wants to. We asked whether he’d cracked the formula… “I did work out what the formula was,” he says. “‘Get Out My Head’ was an accidental hit and I followed it up with ‘Lost in Your Love’, but I was like “I’m not into this!” “I’m grateful for the commercial success I’ve had, because it’s allowed me to make more music. “Lost in your Love sold like 180,000 copies – but they’re not the kids who go to Motion.” Opening the In:Motion season is a honour for any artist, and the feeling is no different for Hugh: “I’m very happy to be invited to play at In:Motion. We’ve done Lobster Boy events before, but not quite like this. “I love the Motion crew, they’re good friends of mine and In:Motion is a very special thing. I’m excited to come back to Bristol and bring my whole record label sound. “And we can come to the party and fucking smash it up – that’s what we do for a living! It’s nice that I can do that and be with loads of people I know.”

30 THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES
Propaganda: Dan Ickowitz-Seidler & Julien Barraud
DAN ICKOWITZ-SEIDLER Job title: Creator and Company Director
JULIEN BARRAUD
Job title: Propaganda Operations Director
As students return to the city and reems of wideeyed freshers roll in, a team of people are beavering away in a small office on Park Street, working on the UK’s biggest student club night, Propaganda. Plans for this year’s Fresher’s include guest line ups of Greg James, Frank Turner, Clara Amfo, Twin Atlantic, The Libertines, This is England ‘90, as well as Vine/ social media superstar, Arron Crascall. Since the first Propaganda launched in Bristol just over a decade ago, the alternative club night has grown to include 18 weekly club nights across the UK, as well as nights in Australia, Ibiza and Brazil; and the first-ever Propaganda venue is set to open this month in Leeds.. It’s hard to believe that all this grew out of a small idea from Bristol student Dan Ickowitz-Seidler, who
decided to use £300 of his student loan to launch the night in early 2000s. “I was in my first year of uni,” says Dan. “I played drums in a band and had edited a music website in my year out. And literally, there was someone flyering in the street, and having never DJ’d before, I went up to him and asked if they needed any new DJs because I’d always wanted to have a go. “So I was taken on by this club night and they showed me the ropes, but unfortunately the night failed and closed. I launched Propaganda in my second year of uni, using £300 of my student loan. “Never in my life did I imagine it would become my full time job, let alone 25 other people’s full time job. “I never thought it would grow to this size, but I was really passionate about the indie scene, and as we went along, everyone who got involved has been really passionate about the indie scene.” One of those people is Jules Barraud, Propaganda’s operations director. Jules used to manage Bristol nightclub, Panache and got involved with Propaganda after becoming close friends with Dan during the two years Panache hosted the club night. “We grew organically, starting in Bristol”, says Jules. “It was in 2009 that we went from two events to five or six, and another five or six the year after.” While each Propaganda city has an area manager, most of the planning and organisation still comes out of Bristol. Jules explains: “We still do a lot of things centrally, so the guestbooking, and the marketing
and designers work from our office. But in each city, the area manager looks after promotion – we like them to take ownership of their own event.” “We’re always looking for local promoters and that’s a full-time position,” says Dan. “All of our promoters are really good. People can head to our website if they’re interested in getting involved.” “And if you’re a student,” Jules adds. “Wherever there’s a Propaganda, there’s a street team. Whether it’s for two hours a week or 10 hours a week – we always look for extra staff. ” Despite launching during the height of the indie scene, Propaganda has managed to retain its popularity despite music tastes moving on for many. “Without a doubt there has definitely been a change,” says Dan. “When we first came out, people associated themselves with the genre.” Jules says, “but I think now with YouTube, Spotify and live streaming in general, you get people who’ll jump from one genre to another.” “Yeah, you’ll get the same person who’ll listen to an indie artist, and then a dance artist and then an indie rock artist - and then probably put Taylor Swift on,” says Dan. “There’s a lot of crossover of genres and we’ve had to change Propaganda a bit to reflect that. We’ve other genres, we’ve never been a purely indie night, we do play other genres, but we’ve had to do that a bit more within the last couple of years.
“We always make time for new music at the beginning of the night as well. But Mr Brightside is 10 years old, and we still get requests for that all the time!” Dan continues: “Although Propaganda is really well-known nationally, I think it’s important that we don’t get complacent and keep getting those guest DJs and make it a bit different. “It’s so important to us to get that fresher’s period right. We spend a fortune going to fresher’s fairs – I think people don’t realise how much you have to invest into a night to maintain it.” As well as running Propaganda, Dan also has his hand in a number of other projects, including managing emerging singer-songwriter Kerrie Watt, and still finds time to DJ once or twice a week. “I’m all over the country,” says Dan. “I tend to spend two days in Bristol a week, two days in London a week, and I’m also involved in a venue in Cardiff so I’m spending a lot of time down there. I normally do my emails at four in the morning because it’s the only chance I get!” Operations director Jules is responsible for running things on the ground and making things run smoothly with all the club nights across the UK and beyond. “Friday is the day we have the most events on the night across the country,” says Jules. “So I’ll make sure all the right equipment is in the right place,
“I LAUNCHED PROPAGANDA IN MY SECOND YEAR OF UNI, USING £300 OF MY STUDENT LOAN.”
THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES 31
everyone has each other’s contact details if there is a guest DJ – it’s mainly logistics. Making sure there are no bad surprises on the night.” Dan continues: “Obviously, I run the company and all that has to be done. But the bit I enjoy most is when I DJ at a Propaganda event. It’s when you see all your hard work pay off. “I love seeing the event when it’s packed. I think that’s the most rewarding part – seeing people having a good time. And I love the fact that every
day is different.” “I’ll agree with Dan there,” says Jules. “And also the fact that it’s still very close to the music industry. It’s interesting to listen to bands and wonder whether they’re going to make it big. That’s pretty cool. And we still go to South by Southwest every year in the Sates just to check out some of those bands.” “Promoting in a scene that you’re part of is key,” Dan says. “I think a lot of people see a night doing
well and try and do a copycat night, but it never works if people can tell it’s not genuine.” Jules warns, “One of the other things you have to accept is that it’s going to be your social life. You have to be ready for it! Most of our social groups are people who work within the industry, DJs, club owners, other promoters… “Very quickly you’re not invited to birthday parties anymore because people think, Jules and Dan? Yeah they’re busy Friday and Saturday.”
