Pete Josef
Resonators
Pete Josef has always been a soul boy at heart, but his multi-instrumental skills have led him into some interesting situations. He has for years been recording and playing live with Roni Size and Reprazent, and also fronts and co-produces the lo-fi house duo White Lamp with Darren Emerson (Underworld), whose track ‘Make it Good’ became somewhat of a club hit. His debut album Colour is a genre-bending combination of jazz, soul, pop and electro, entirely self-penned, self-recorded and produced by the talented solo artist. The title track is an absolute beauty – we promise it will give you shivers if you catch him live at Valley Fest this month.
UK reggae group Resonators are proof that the spirit of the original roots sound is alive and well, bringing a modern, fresh edge to the scene. Fronted by two soulful and innovative female vocalists, Faye Houston and Kassia Zermon, Resonators have gained a reputation for high energy and uplifting live shows. Their self-titled debut album released in May 2010 attracted support from the likes of David Rodigan, Mark Lamarr and Jstar. Now, after a four-year hiatus, the eight-piece troupe from Brighton are coming to Trinity Centre for an LP launch party celebrating the release of Imaginary People on WahWah 45s. Kassia answers our 10 questions…

6. What was the last book you read? I read a lot, but online mostly... There is so much mind expanding content out there. Village Christmas: And Other Notes on the English Year by Laurie Lee was probably the last actual book I read – love a bit of nostalgia!

4. Who are your top 3 acts right now? Acts on fire for me this summer: Stuff, Anderson Paak and Ed Motta. Amazing bands, amazing front people.
9. Tell us something people don’t know about you.. I have an addiction to watching wildlife videos, especially animals scrapping – the more real the better. I think seeing that side of nature reminds us how feeble we are!

CARASEL MC
Bristol’s Carasel is not only a successful lyric MC with tracks signed to Hospital Records (among other labels), and a solo album under his belt; but also in the traditional master of ceremonies sense, having hosted for drum and bass producers from Netsky to Hazard, as well as big league-nights including Drum and Bass Arena, Warning and Hospitality. Despite these successes further afield, he keeps his roots firmly planted in the local scene, whether that’s through projects with his crew Ambush, his regular Ujima radio show, or his label AFT (Ambush Family Tree) Records and their two-monthly parties at Full Moon and Attic Bar.
Different flows for different shows We meet up with Carasel at Ujima headquarters as he prepares for his bass-obsessed show ‘Ambush the Airwaves’, to find out what sets the MC apart. ‘The majority of parties I get booked for and where I make my living is hosting big drum and bass shows. When I perform there I’m never really performing my own tracks, except on a rare occasion when a drum and bass DJ plays my tunes, which happened at Boomtown. Nice little moments like that happen but
the majority of the time I’m there to link the crowd to the set and get them hyped.
wasn’t really until I moved to Bristol that I started making tracks.’
It’s about adding a different layer and emphasising what the DJ is playing – giving it a bit of up. The DJ can smash it, but I feel that a master of ceremonies, a good MC, can take it to the next level and connect the crowd.’
This summer has seen him performing almost every Friday and Saturday night, with more in between, sometimes hitting a couple of festivals a day.
It’s not often you’ll see any sort of drum and bass lineup in the South West without seeing Carasel’s name. Having seen him hype up a crowd many times ourselves, we were curious to find out what came first for the born-performer, hosting or creating his own tracks… ‘Hosting first and foremost. I started out really into hip hop, I wasn’t into drum and bass at all, my friends would play me sets and I didn’t really get it. It really stood out for me when I went to my first rave, I must have been about 16, just hearing the MCs on drum and bass, doing what they were doing and realising that these guys were English. Because I had only really related to American MCs before, but to see English MCs and the whole crowd knowing their lyrics – that’s what really showed me that there was potential here to do it myself. ‘It started from blagging the microphone at our first raves, to learning how to hold down sets on my own, and taking it to the next level like that. That progressed onto doing our own nights and then it
‘This has been the craziest summer I’ve ever had. I just did Boomtown and that was my 12th festival. And that’s just festivals, I’ve been doing gigs amongst that, and label nights in Amsterdam… ‘It really helps doing the radio show on Ujima, because it keeps me very connected with the music. Every time I’m on, I’m going through promos, finding out the latest drum and bass… A lot of MCs don’t do that. They might turn up and host the music, but I really am on the ball with the newest music. I’m always playing the upfront stuff – I know who’s killing it. ‘A lot of MCs in drum and bass, they do jump up raves or liquid raves and they’re kind of pigeon holed, whereas I do the whole spectrum. I might play at Warning back to back with Skibadee and I could play the Hospital Records raves where I’m holding down three hours. I think it’s the versatility that’s key to keep me kind of spread, and know when to spit loads of lyrics and know when to step off the gas. We call it different flows for different shows. Whatever the crowd needs, whatever it requires, I’m over 10 years in the game so I feel that I know how to work different
LOCAL TALENT // 25 crowds, whether they’re younger or a bit more clued up – I can give them what they need.’ As well as all this, Carasel has a full solo album Progression under his belt, which is not something you see too often from an MC. Progression came out on AFT in 2012 and features a whole host of Bristol talent, including Dr Meaker. ‘It was a great time of my life, I was living bang in the middle of Bristol, I’d just got to the point where I was making enough money from gigs that I could step away from full time work and I could just put all my effort into creating an album. It was also a time when my producer Blacksmith was just killing it with beats – really on fire – and it all just came together. And to have an album with features from Dynamite MC and Stamina and Eksman, I was really proud. ‘I kick myself that I haven’t got round to doing another one, but life has got so busy, but I’m definitely working towards it and that next chapter will come. But I look back on Progression and I’m really proud of that album, and hopefully I’ll give you another one soon.’ If it wasn’t already, Carasel’s name was permanently etched onto the Bristol music scene last year, when he threw a party last year that has gone down in history – his ‘Backlash’ party, a fundraiser to help replace the equipment stolen when thieves broke into the studio he shared with Blacksmith . ‘We got the message one day from Matt (Foreign Concept) who worked at the studio with us to say that we’d been broken into. We turned up to see all our stuff taken, it was just devastating. There’s a lot of tracks that we’ve never managed to get back and thousands of pounds worth of equipment. It was a real killer. Blacksmith’s dad had just passed away recently and it just felt like a real blow. ‘But the way that the whole Bristol community rallied around us, it was just unbelievable. We had Die offer us an MPC, Danny Byrd offer us computers. It was crazy. ‘And then we got a phone call from Thekla, which is my favourite Bristol club anyway, to say “we saw what happened, do you want to do a party?” ‘I started reaching out to some artists and it was crazy the lineup we put together. We had Roni Size and S.P.Y, DC Breaks – it was unbelievable! They all came down to play for free. ‘The club sold out, it was rammed and I was walking around the club and people were literally trying to give me money. I thought: I need to go backstage, because it was so overwhelming. I’m welling up now thinking about it.
The way that the whole Bristol community rallied around us, it was just unbelievable ‘So back up your computers kids! We lost a lot of good stuff. But we’ll make more. We’re in a better position now than we were back than, and that’s a blessing. Thanks to the Bristol people that made it happen.’ Just over a year later and it seems like the MC truly is in a better position than ever, with his AFT record label gathering more and more momentum. ‘The label came from me and DJ Sinai wanting to give people a platform to put out the music that we love. It’s going well, we’re coming up to our eighth release and we’ve had two licenses – one to Drum and Bass Arena and one to Hospital Records – they’ve been major labels for us to be involved with. ‘And we’ve got the regular AFT party at Full Moon and Attic every two months, which has been going from strength to strength. Every one is rammed and it feels like we’re building a nice community there and people are really starting to support the night and support the label – the branches of the Ambush Family Tree just keep getting bigger! ‘The next party is 9 September with DC Breaks, so make sure you come see us at our rave. And just keep an eye on us, we’ve got Octo Pi’s album coming out, loads of good music from Sinai, Blacksmith’s got a project coming out – just lots of good Bristol music!’

It’s a sunny Friday afternoon and I’m joined in Trinity Centre by Kahn, Neek, Hi5Ghost and Boofy – otherwise known as Bandulu Gang – to talk about their upcoming blowout in the old church: Sureskank 10. This September, Bandulu Gang and friends, including Deep Medi, will take over Trinity Centre to celebrate 10 years of Sureskank, a dubstep and grime institution that started out as a party for Neek and his friends in 2006. ‘Me and a friend were leaving to go to university and it was another friend’s birthday so we threw a party,’ Neek explains. ‘But it went so well that we decided to keep it going. I ran Sureskank nights between Brighton, where I went to university, and here in Bristol. ‘And then when I moved back to Bristol in 2010, we started it full time. It’s how we built up our crew – our DJs and our mates, and it was just somewhere for us all to play out at the start.
‘We wanted to represent both grime and dubstep, because the scenes at the time were intermingled then, all the record people were working with each other.’
twenties or whatever, and we were 17 / 18. We were the first generation of proper young kids DJing and trying to learn the music and get into it around then.’
Hi5Ghost agrees: ‘I think at the time dubstep wasn’t really singled out as one thing. It was all so new that people didn’t even know what it was at the time.’
‘The energy was crazy’, says Boofy. ‘It brought everyone together that I would never chill with. No offence Joe (Kahn), but goths and that, we had nothing in common. Then suddenly you’d go to a dubstep rave and see all different kinds of people in the same room. You see the same with grime now – you see all different kinds of people at a grime night. And it’s nice to have everyone together.

When I first heard dubstep I thought it was slow grime or something – I didn’t know what to call it! It was so easy to DJ both or listen to both.’

‘Sureskank was a good training ground,’ says Kahn, who as well as releases on labels like Punch Drunk, Black Box and Deep Medi Musik, has been very much a duo with Neek since their breakthrough track, the unapologetic grime banger Percy, which launched Bandulu Records in 2012.
The energy was crazy – it brought everyone together that I would never chill with In the six years since, the vinyl-only label has put out a handful of very limited release records, featuring Kahn, Neek, Hi5Ghost and Boofy, plus a look in from Gemmy, Oatz and Breen on Bandulu 003.
But they’ve certainly caught the attention of many of us, with each record selling out almost instantly. So how does one get to be part of the seemingly exclusive crew?
Kahn and Neek had mutual friends from college, but took their acquaintance to the next level after Kahn invaded the decks at the very first Sureskank.
‘To be part of Bandulu, you’ve got to be a wavey don,’ Neek jokes. ‘No, it is a larger family. Not everyone has necessarily released on the label, but we’ve got friends who have similar taste in music that DJ with us who are part of the extended family. It’s just having a similar ethos in what kind of music they play and make.’
‘We knew Courtney (Hi5Ghost) was an MC and we met each other out at clubs. The Croft was an important venue for bringing people together back then,’ says Kahn.
‘I think in Bristol, these crews pop out of actual friendship groups,’ says Kahn. ‘The fact that we’re making music is obviously important to it, but we’re friends first. So it’s not like we’re trying to be really exclusive, we are all actually just best mates.’ And believe it or not, in our all-time favourite comingtogether story, that friendship blossomed from a massive game of laser tag…
‘I lived too far out to go to those things and be involved with anyone that did music,’ says Boofy. ‘And when you do music and you realise you’re getting all the shit sets, and you’re not playing where you want to play, I just thought: I’m not going to play out until I actually get some good releases going. ‘Then Courtney and I had a mutual friend and started chatting because he wanted a tune from me… Then we all just went out to do Laser Quest sessions and shit. ‘We just used to go with a bag of people and there were so many of us, they’d just give us the whole of Laser Quest.

They let us bring our own CDs, so we’d play little grime sets while running around shooting each other. That’s when we all starting gelling. I think we went like four times.’ At this point Kahn suggests they went for Hi5’s birthday, which he strongly contests, before Boofy sets things straight: ‘It was no one’s birthday, we just all went to Laser Quest! We’re talking kid’s party, 3pm here. That’s where friendships started forming, and since then it’s been the same old stuff. We just do dumb shit together and it’s funny.’ Aside from dumb shit, they’re all independently killing it on the underground music scene. Boofy runs his Sector 7 label with Lemzly Dale, Hi5Ghost heads up own his Paper Cranes label, and Bandulu bosses Kahn and Neek also produce under their dancehall leaning Gorgon Sound alias, with records out on Peng Sound; plus they are both part of the Young Echo collective. ‘Even though everyone has their own label, we all have a fair input into everything,’ says Hi5Ghost. ‘I wouldn’t put anything out if I hadn’t shown these boys first and asked what they think. And likewise for all of us. ‘We are all through different mediums pushing each other
at the same time. We’ve all done stuff for Sector 7, we’ve all done stuff on Bandulu and we’ve all done stuff for Paper Cranes; and likewise for other friends’ labels – Peng Sound and Hotline and all that.’
We were the first generation of kids going to those nights ‘I think we all benefit from each other’s endeavours, because we’ve created our own little micro-industry or our own scene, or whatever – which is good for everyone,’ says Kahn. ‘Because separately we’re all small, independent record labels, but as a group it seems like a bigger thing. It keeps me interested in it, certainly.’ 10 years since the launch of Sureskank and with so many successful offshoots, it only seems right they should throw such a massive party to celebrate, and although the lineup is semi-secret, it more than hints at a few very special guests.
‘The Sureskank family is constantly evolving,’ says Neek. ‘I started it with a couple of other friends: Middleman, Wataca and Beavis – and Batman did the graphics ‘cause I went to college with him. And very quickly it went from five of us to including Joe, B-Lam and Hi5Ghost, Superisk and Gemmy, and then Boofy joined when he got involved with Bandulu three years ago when we released his record. Half of the people are coming back to play the night even if they don’t necessarily DJ anymore, but they’re part of it – they’re part of the history of it.’ ‘Trinity has got fuck loads of history as well,’ says Hi5Ghost. ‘I ain’t going to try and pretend that I’ve been really involved in the planning of this whole thing, but Trinity has been here from when my parents and my uncle (Peter D Rose of Smith & Mighty) were going out. So we’re celebrating 10 years of Sureskank in a pretty solid bit of Bristol culture.’ The names already on the bill should be enough to entice anyone, but they’ve also hinted that there will be some major lineup announcements in the days leading up to the event. ‘We’ve got lots of very special guests coming that we can’t

talk about,’ says Kahn. ‘But use your imagination – whoever you think it is, it probably is, but we’re not allowed to say.’ On the lineup so far, as well as the whole Bandulu Gang, is P Money, Sir Spyro, and Spooky, along with the promise of a ‘very special Deep Medi squad’ and special guest MCs. No doubt the party will set them up in good stead for the rest of the year, which looks pretty busy for all of them… ‘We have got some Bandulu records coming out before the end of the year. So after summer we’ve got a couple of thing planned,’ says Neek. ‘We’ve also started a Young Echo record label,’ says Kahn. ‘The first release is probably coming out in October or November, and we’ve got a brand new Young Echo album coming out early next year. We haven’t put an album out for four years, so it’s going to be really good.’
We’ve got lots of very special guests coming ‘My Noir EP is just out on Paper Cranes,’ says Hi5Ghost. ‘It’s with my alternative alias Wu Yen, which is kind of experimental trap. It’s a five track EP, with a sample pack and two extra tunes as well – and it’s out on USB.’ ‘Me and let’s say ‘someone else’ – I can’t say yet – are bringing out a joint EP,’ says Boofy. ‘It’s not an alias, it’s just different to stuff I’ve done before. It’s kind of sick. It’s a load of stuff that was very personal at the time, so it’s something that I take very serious when it comes out. ‘And Sector 7 wise, I’ve got two artists I’m going to be looking after. One of them I’ve released before and one of them is new. But it’s going to be staying on the same vibes.’

As we continue our exploration behind the scenes of Bristol’s nightlife, we meet Femi Idowu-Read of Signs & That, the man responsible for making some of Bristol’s biggest nights look as good as they sound.
planning. I was sat in the first meeting and people are like: Have you thought about fire safety and how many people are climbing onto the stage, and having access and all of this stuff… But Team Love are just great, they’re really up for helping you and guiding you through the process. So I wasn’t fully prepared, but I was well up for it.’ As you could expect for a creative business like Femi’s, especially one that tends to revolve around events and festivals, there is no such thing as a typical day for him and his team. ‘If I’ve got a big project on, say a stage design, I go in, begin
‘Me, George and Ben are the three guys that are Signs & That. And alongside that we have a music night called Sleazy Sessions, which is a disco night. Basically, we love disco, we love partying and we love décor, and there are so many nights that call themselves disco nights and they don’t play disco, which just winds me up. And secondly, they don’t put any effort into the décor.
‘During the last year of my uni course, I basically decided that I was going to go into sign making. So I steered my course towards that, which didn’t turn out the best in terms of getting a good grade! When I left, I started doing a bit for Shambarber’s tent at Shambala, and that was the first signage that I did outside of uni.
‘Décor is a way of being able to almost manipulate people’s emotion and how they engage with the night. If we’re doing a Shape’s night, every single room is considered. We’ll think: What kind of emotions do we want people to have when they’re in this room?
‘Doing the signs is what kind of put my name on the map, and it spiralled from there into more décor, which is what I really want to be doing.’ Another avenue Femi has explored more recently is stage design, creating stages for barbers-slash-partythrowers Shambarber at both Shambala festival and Love Saves the Day.
‘I felt like I was ready, but I probably wasn’t! I learnt fast that you have to do a lot – a lot of different things and a lot of
‘I was like, “I’m carving the nose – that’s the bit I’m doing. I’ve been thinking about carving this nose for two weeks now. You guys can do the rest.” So I was there sawing away on polystyrene till really late.
‘The best thing about it is that I get to work with my best mates. The two guys that work with me are two of my really good friends. We argue and there’s all that sort of brotherly bullshit, but it’s really nice.
Since launching the business just three years ago, he now works regularly with several of Bristol’s biggest promoters, including Shapes, Just Jack and Shambarber, but he first thought about making a career of it while at university at UWE, where he studied graphic design.
‘He’s had a stage at Love Saves the Day since the beginning, but this year they gave him a bigger budget, so he rang me up and said, “Do you want to come and do a stage for me?” Before this, I’d mostly been involved in décor at music nights or helping with little bits at festivals, but this was the first time I actually designed the whole thing, built it, put the whole thing up and took it down. It was based on his concept and what he wanted the feel of the stage to be like, and I took his brief and interpreted it in my way.
‘Most of what I did on that was the designing on the stage and designing on the computer and figuring out how we were actually going to do it. But the bit where I really got my hands dirty was carving the clown’s nose...
‘But there is no typical day. There is no structure or routine, and I’m not going to be doing the same thing every day. It’s a positive and a negative, but also, I don’t think I could work any other way. I don’t think I could sit in an office working, even if I was designing – I couldn’t do that routine.
‘Bespoke signage and event production surmises all the different things that we do,’ says Femi. ‘It took a while to figure out what that is! We work on the premise that if you want us to make it, we’ll try and figure it out and make it for you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a sign, or something we’ve made before.’
‘I wouldn’t be doing half the stuff I’m doing now if it wasn’t for working with Shambarber. Stephen (Shambarber) is a good friend of mine and he basically saw what I could do before I had actually done it.

‘Even if you’re at a party in a big warehouse, it’s considered that the DJ isn’t raised up really high, that he’s eye level with the rest of the crowd, that there’s only one light… They’re not thought to be décor or production things, but actually they are appropriate for the music that you’re doing.
the day by going on my emails and sorting out the initial admin stuff – ordering the right materials, organising where we are within the build, etc. Hopefully then, I can put my laptop down, be in the studio and work with the other guys. That’s the best scenario for me. ‘But the irony of doing bigger things, for me, is that you don’t actually get to spend the time building it. Often I’ll have to do loads of admin and keep the ball rolling for different parts within the project. ‘We’re a team and everyone knows that, and it’s built to our specifications, so it’s built how it should be built. But what I

So if you can create a visual element that aids in that process, then people are going to enjoy themselves more. And what it does is allow them to get lost in the music.’
