Bristol (by way of Plymouth) alternative hip hop trio The Scribes combine their talents to create a refreshingly unique sound and write-home-about live show, fusing elements from funk to rock to create their own exciting vision for the future of hip hop. Lyricist and multi instrumentalist Shaun Amos aka Ill Literate, rapper Jonny Steele and beatbox artisan Lacey have been pushing the boundaries of modern hip hop on the local scene and beyond, building up a catalogue of future classics whilst touring with huge names like Macklemore, Dizzy Rascal, Lethal Bizzle, Example, Pendulum, De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan’s GZA, Wiley, Coolio, Plan B, Goldie, Tinie Tempah, MF Doom and Chase & Status. The Scribes’ contagious energy on stage has won them countless best live act awards and recognition from the likes of NME. Don’t miss a chance to catch them on their own turf this month. Upcoming shows: 30 September, Mr Wolf’s // 4 November, The Golden Lion

Fronted by Barrie Cadogan – a touring and recording member of Primal Scream since 2006 – alternative rock trio Little Barrie are coming to Exchange this September in the wake of their fifth studio album drop, Death Express. After more than 15 years of quiet success, supporting the reunited Stone Roses in Paris and touring with the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Charles Bradley, plus several jaunts with Primal Scream; Little Barrie suddenly reached the ears of the masses after being invited to record the theme song for Breaking Bad spin off, Better Call Saul. Their brilliant blend of R&B-infused, funky, garage rock obviously struck a chord, as Little Barrie head off on a headline UK tour this September, including some infamous venues like London’s Scala, Nottingham’s Bodega and, of course, Bristol’s Exchange. Before they set off, Barrie answers our 10 questions. Upcoming shows: 26 September, Exchange

Band

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? Jonny: That people still believe in a flat Earth theory. Shaun: Probably a bit behind on this one, but I learned that a millionaire hid some treasure in Yellowstone park and left a poem full of clues for people to try and find it. Had a go at cracking it, but no luck so far. Probably best stick to music for now. 2. Favourite track of all time? Shaun: Currently, Blur – To The End, though I do change my mind a lot. Jonny: Nas – It Ain’t Hard To Tell. Lacey: My playlist is always changing but my current top song has got to be Sean Price – Bully Rap. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Lacey: Mine’s got to be They Know by Shaun Dean – the bassline remix. Shaun: I’d be long in bed by then, so ideally something quiet! Jonny: Pharoahe Monch – Simon Says. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Jonny: Joyner Lucas, Ocean Wisdom and Oddisee. Shaun: Sonreal, Big Sean and Tyler. Lacey: The Scribes. That’s a no-brainer. And then probably Stormzy and Run The Jewels. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? Shaun: Pro-wrestler. Definitely. Probably a heel (bad guy) manager. Jonny: Snake charmer. Lacey: I’d be a vet – always wanted to be one but never got round to it.

6. What was the last book you read? Lacey: A Child Called It – some deep ish right there. Shaun: In The Vatican Cellars by Andre Gide. Was pretty dope. Jonny: SuperFreakenomics. 7. Favourite thing on TV? Jonny: GoT. Lacy: At the minute I am loving Preacher and Ozark. Shaun: Lucha Underground. It’s like Mexican wrestling meets a horror movie and it’s mental. 8. Are you afraid of anything? Shaun: Fear itself. And spiders. Mostly spiders. Jonny: Anything, no. Everything, yes. Lacey: I’m afraid of nothing! 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... Shaun: I am currently overly obsessed with board games. It’s the lamest addiction for a musician. Lacey: I often wish I was Chinese. Shaun: Why?! Lacey: I don’t know. It’s just a thing. I think I was Chinese in a past life. I love kung fu and I often watch subtitled films without the subtitles on and somehow still know what they’re talking about. Shaun: A-mazing. Jonny: My middle name in Tamil is an anagram for Rasputin. Shaun: Good work everyone, some real gems there.

THOSE QUESTIONS... 1. What have you learned today? I learned some new guitar chords when I was messing about. They’re cool because they’re not very guitary sounding. 2. Favourite track of all time? Man that’s tough – I have so many favourites, but I love Gypsy Eyes by Jimi Hendrix and Oh Yeah by Can. 3. It’s 3am and the party is winding down, what track do you play to get everyone going again? Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell by Iggy And The Stooges. 4. Who are your top three acts right now? Can I have four? Sleaford Mods, The Heliocentrics, The Schitzophonics and The Brian Jonestown Massacre – or anything involving Anton Newcombe. 5. If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? I’d be trying to do something creative, maybe some form of design. Or something that was still guitar related.

6. What was the last book you read? Johnny Marr’s autobiography Set The Boy Free. 7. F avourite thing on TV? I don’t have a TV, so don’t watch much of it. I really liked the Tom Hardy series Taboo and Better Call Saul. 8. A re you afraid of anything? Not making the most of things. 9. Tell us something people don’t know about you... I drove a 70-tonne Challenger 2 tank once. It was surprisingly smooth to steer. 10. What are you doing tomorrow? I’m off to see our friends The Black Delta Movement – who are supporting Little Barrie for the whole UK tour – at Lovebuzz Studios in South London, where they’re recording.

10. What are you doing tomorrow? Jonny: Hunting the world’s most dangerous game. Lacey: Tomorrow is my anniversary, so I’m taking my wife out for a nice meal. Shaun: Board game picnic. It’s exactly as cool as it sounds.

DBS MUSIC PRESENTS LOCAL TALENT

SLEEPTALKING

Bristol band Sleeptalking have earned a reputation largely for their incredible live performances and legitimately thrilling stage theatrics, although their recently released EP Oh, Isn’t it Strange? stands up entirely on its own as a brilliant modern grunge record with powerful raw instrumentation and permeating vocals from lead singer Tom Nosek. Back up vocals and drums are provided by the multi-talented Jack Hamilton, who is also a classically trained opera singer, while Freddie Strange and Dan O’Connell are on guitar and bass guitar, and most recent member of the group Rhys Friery looks after keys – though he can also be seen wielding various ‘rogue percussion’ including a shaky banana, a vibraslap and ‘some shitty symbols’. While Sleeptalking is a relatively new project, the group has been on the scene for years in various incarnations, including what they describe as ‘the most depressing band in the South West’, Hanging Tree. ‘We used to play music that was 60bpm, entirely in a minor key and just very sad, very sad,’ says Freddie. ‘Each song was about 15 minutes long – it was terrible. Afterwards we were doing something else and a couple of guys we knew got us in front of Funnel Music… and Reece.’ ‘Reece worked A&R for the label we’re currently on. He got us on the label and simultaneously joined the band,’ says Dan.

‘Me and Rhys go way back,’ says Freddie, ’it’s not like he just jumped in…’ ‘Rhys saw an opportunity and he went for it hard,’ Dan laughs. Facepaint, costumes and an overall sentiment of glam rock is very much a part of their act, although act may be the wrong word for it, as it comes naturally to the group – and specifically Tom, whose favourite outfit on their last tour was a silver chrome dress. ‘I think it’s just natural to our personalities,’ Tom explains. ‘But at the same time, it’s quite boring when you go to a show and there’s just people with good songs. To me, I find that really uninteresting, I’d rather go and listen to it on vinyl. If I go to a show, I want to see a performance. I want to see something happen. That’s why you watch someone on a raised stage, I think.’ ‘It works as a good disguise for a general lack of musical talent as well!’ says Freddie. ‘We like to put on a show, because that’s what people are paying to see,’ says Dan. If there’s a way to evidence the impact of their live show without seeing it for yourself, it must be the way that they found a fan in Michael Eavis, who after seeing them live once invited them to perform at this year’s Glastonbury.

LOCAL TALENT // 29

Jack explains how it came about: ‘I work in a Pizza Express and he came in, so I thought, “Fuck it, I’m going to invite him to a gig’. I wrote it down on a piece of paper and he actually came along. He called our manager the next day – it was pretty exciting.’ ‘He showed up at Glastonbury as well! He came to our set,’ says Rhys. Although Sleeptalking consider themselves very much a live band, they manage to convey a lot of that energy through their recordings, with a raw live sound coming through that almost makes you feel as though they’re a few meters in front of you. ‘We like to put across what we are live in our recordings,’ says Dan. ‘It’s honest. There’s no point covering it up with other stuff if that’s not what you’re going to hear live, so I think we’ve always tried to keep quite a raw tone.’ ‘I think we’re going more in that direction as well,’ says Tom. ‘Sometimes we lose that in our recordings and it doesn’t quite have the same edge as it has live – and that needs to come across because that’s what makes our sound so individual.’ ‘We are a live band,’ says Jack. ‘We really, really enjoy playing live and look forward to touring. Obviously we like recording as well, but I think that’s always been our focus.’ Sleeptalking are part of a growing band scene in Bristol. While it’s always been there, previously the larger stages were dominated by electronic acts. ‘I think the Bristol scene has just got really good,’ says Freddie. ‘We moved here about three years ago and it was really diverse and everything, but it felt like there were no discernable scenes knocking around. ‘Maybe we just weren’t a part of it, but it felt like there was nothing solid. And I guess since Idles have jumped up a notch, that’s dragged a certain few bands up, and the venues are putting more faith in local bands and this sort of music. ‘Maybe that’s a change in general taste, but it seems like the bands have forced it through by being quite good.’ Despite only heading out on tour with their Oh, Isn’t it Strange? EP this winter, they already have some new music in the works and are heading into the studio this month with producer Stew Jackson, who worked with Massive Attack on their recent track The Spoils. This means that they’ll have

If I go to a show, I want to see a performance, I want to see something happen. That’s why you watch someone on a raised stage some new music in tow when they close their UK tour at Crofters Rights this December. ‘We’ve changed a bit since putting that EP out,’ says Freddie. ‘I think it was from seeing a few bands at Glastonbury and taking a bit of influence from them. We saw King Gizzard at The Crow’s Nest and that was just insane. Tom saw Flaming Lips and I think there’s a bit of that in there now.’ ‘I think the Oh, Isn’t it Strange? EP comes across as a little bit rock,’ says Jack. ‘But I don’t think any of us are massively into rock-rock-rock stuff. We are quite powerful as a live act, we play quite hard and it’s quite difficult to put across that power without sounding a bit rock, but I think we’ve kind of got the hang of that now.’ ‘Tom’s vocal is more Mother Love Bone or Pearl Jam than Nirvana,’ says Dan. ‘But they were grunge bands that sounded like classic rock bands. If the term grunge had been coined earlier, they would have been known as grunge bands.’ ‘The part of grunge that resonates with us all is that it feels very visceral,’ says Jack. ‘I wasn’t around to see Nirvana, but watching their videos it feels fucking real, the energy. So I think that will always stay with us in some ways.’ With any band, the vocals are inevitably one of the most distinguishing factors and Tom has a voice that’s both impossible to ignore or forget. Having sung in bands since the age of 15, he’s had time to develop a very unique sound and mightily impressive pitch. ‘My voice has developed from playing in really, really loud bands, so having to sing at 100 percent all the time. And then you slowly develop a higher tone so you can sing above everything else. ‘I’ve also been inspired by classic rock, which I used to listen to a lot when I was young because of my dad. I’ve always liked heavier rock with good melodic vocals – I love Chris Cornell. And that helps, because it’s always in the back of your mind – the way that they sit above everything and don’t necessarily fall into line.

‘I don’t like it when I struggle to hear a vocalist live, or if they have the same tone as their guitar – especially if you’re a lyric driven band and we do pride ourselves on our lyrics. I want to perform them and I want people to hear them live.’ ‘The thing about Tom is that he does actually push himself quite hard,’ says Jack. ‘Often Fred will come in with a song that’s probably way too high for him, but he will try it and will constantly push it.’ ‘There definitely is quite a self-competition element to it. I’ve was raised in quite a sporty family,’ says Tom. ‘There was about three months where I was just fucking with you,’ Freddie tells him. ‘Every song we did, it was like, “Right, this one is going to have a higher note in the chorus”. It was supposed to be a joke, but he just kept singing it.’ With new music hopefully arriving by next spring, they’re already looking beyond that and towards a full album. To nods of agreement, Freddie tells us: ‘Once we’ve released an EP that we really, really like and we’re really, really happy with and that we feel represents us, then moving on to the album will be quite quick.’

SASASAS

The undisputed home of drum and bass in Bristol, RUN is back with a special all day event with probably the biggest drum and bass day lineup we’ve ever seen. The occasion has even called for Bristol-bred producer Hugh Pescod aka Redlight to dust off his retired Clipz moniker for a very rare outing.

Nitelife shared a few words with SASASAS’s DJ Phantasy, who recounts for us how it went down: ‘The anticipation for that set was mad. Harry Shotta had two other shows that night,

Joining him are some scene veterans including Hype, Congo Natty and Dillinja, as well as some breakthrough talents like Mollie Collins, plus one of the biggest drum and bass acts of the moment, six-strong supergroup SASASAS.

A lot of people have found their way to drum and bass through SASASAS

A drum and bass dream team made up of some of the biggest names in the scene, SASASAS are DJ Phantasy, Macky Gee, Stormin MC, Harry Shotta, Shabba D and MC Skibadee. The group got on stage together for the first time in 2014 as a one-off show with Skibadee for the closing night of Area nightclub in London. However, the enormous response they had to that show set the collaborative project well into motion.

‘The beauty of it is that you’ve got six friends on stage together, we party together, we have a laugh together – you can see it when we’re on stage. We’re all smiling and dancing about and enjoying it. People have gravitated towards that because we’re having a party on stage and they’re having a party on the dancefloor – we’re working together as one.’ Gravitate towards it might be an understatement. In just a few years, the combined force of SASASAS has sparked what could be seen as a movement within drum and bass – turning the previously shunned jump up into a legitimate music of choice.

so couldn’t get there until 5.30 in the morning. Obviously we wanted to play 1-2am, but we played at 5.30am and I just remember the venue being absolutely rammed solid with everyone waiting for this set.

I’m not sure when jump up became a dirty word, but the powerful sixsome capture its essence perfectly. Fun, bouncy basslines, with no one taking themselves too seriously whether they’re on the stage or the dancefloor.

‘Afterwards, our social media went so mental that One Nation contacted us and asked if we would be interesting in doing it for West Fest, and basically that changed everything.

SASASAS are selling out headline shows and packing out arenas at festivals, with a word-of-mouth reputation for an insane live show even preceding several industry awards,

including best live act and best performance in the Drum and Bass Awards 2016. There’s a real sense of fandom surrounding the group, where you’re as likely to see a SASASAS snapback or tracksuit on Instagram as you are at a show. Whether it’s the combination of veteran and fresh talent or their united on-stage energy, they’re obviously doing something right. So we’re pleased to hear that despite independently being six prolific touring and recording artists, SASASAS is the group’s focus going forward.

‘The SASASAS shows get priority and we fit other shows in around it. The plans for next year are already in place. It’s really exciting. We were sitting in a meeting today, and everyone’s having a laugh, having a joke – there are no egos. ‘A lot of people have found their way to drum and bass through SASASAS. I don’t want to sound big headed here, but I’ve got screenshots of people telling us they don’t like drum and bass, but have basically come to like it, and the jump up sound, by being introduced to it through us. ‘We want to break down the boundaries people have about MC culture and about jump up. People have always looked down on it and frowned on it, but the bottom line is: music is music. ‘Andy C has said to me, “What you guys are doing is so good for the scene. People are experiencing drum and bass for the first time listening to you, and you’re bringing them back into the scene and making them fans of the music – which is good for everyone.” ‘Andy has been doing that for the last 20 years, so to hear that from him is amazing. To see this icon of drum and bass look at what we’re doing and make a comment like that. He’s my friend as well, so we’ll talk on a level, and it’s really nice to hear that professional opinion from someone I’ve respected for so long.

We want to break down the boundaries people have about MC culture and about jump up ‘Macky Gee has got a unique sound and it’s quite mad how his music is influencing other producers at the moment so massively. You’ve got those tunes that everyone sings back, the two most obvious ones are DJ Hazard’s Bricks Don’t Roll and Mr Happy, but the next tune is Macky Gee’s Pissed Off. That track was the first track of the new era that the ravers were all singing back. ‘Macky has been a massive influence in melodies coming back into drum and bass. The music lost a bit of melody for a while – it was all about: “I’m a producer, how amazing can I make this snare sound?” But people that go out partying on

the weekend, they don’t give a shit about how good the snare sounds, they want to be involved in what’s happening on the stage and be part of it. ‘What gives us the most pleasure is seeing the people in front of us having a great time and giving them those memories to look back on. That’s more important to us than any award.’

We’ve got an EP coming in October While so far the focus has been their live shows, with only one official release, Phantasy informs us that some new music is on its way. ‘We’ve got an EP coming in October, it’s just down to Macky and I now to finish the music. We’ve got some other bits we’ll be doing towards the end of the year, which I can’t say too much about at the moment. Also, Macky and I are releasing an exclusive USB key, with tracks that we’ve been playing in our sets.’ Looking forward to their RUN show this month, Phantasy has a go at explaining what it is that makes their live show so special: ‘It’s the energy that we bring to the stage. If you look at the individual members – Stormin who is going through cancer treatment and he’s still able to get up on stage and bring all that energy, you’ve got the legendary MC Skibadee who’s been at the top for many years, Harry Shotta is a world record holder, Shabba who’s the hook master – he’s just got hooks for days and they’re all sing-alongs – and you’ve got Macky Gee, who I think is going to be one of the biggest things to come out of drum and bass in the future, I really believe that. ‘We’ve got some really great elements within the group and it’s such a great thing that we’re all there as friends to support each other. There are no egos, we’re just there to party with people and enjoy the experience. ‘RUN and the team behind it, the way they capture the things that are popping at the moment and the way they package it up and present it is brilliant. Bristol, right now, is probably the capital for drum and bass. It has had peaks before, when Roni and all those boys were doing their thing many years ago. ‘I think Bristol has always been on that cutting edge of great music. If you look at all thing things Bristol has – RUN, West Fest up the road, Tokyo World and Love Saves the Day, that’s a real hub for some amazing things that are popping in dance music culture. Anyone that ignores that, they need to have another look and another little think about it. ‘The lineup they’ve managed for RUN: All Day – I don’t even know how they can afford to pay for it. It’s the most craziest lineup I’ve seen! I know it’s going to be an amazing show. I’m really, really looking forward to it.’

JAKE ISAAC

PREVIEW // 33

London-based singer songwriter and rising soul star Jake Isaac describes his sound as ‘singer-songwriter soul, combined with a bit of pop.’ After the release of his 2017 album Our Lives, Jake hasn’t been resting on his laurels, with follow-up single Long Road offering up a nice slice of easy Bastille-like folk – not to mention a seven-date tour supporting Sir Elton John last June.

It takes a lot to be honest

early mornings, and working really hard. When I wasn’t out and about, I was on my laptop developing my craft by learning how to produce, and listening to loads of different music.’ With such a collection of music experience under his belt across a variety of instruments, songwriting and singing, the hardworking artist talks Nitelife through the music making process for his debut solo album. ‘A lot of my inspiration has come from real life situations. Often I’ve written a song and only realised afterwards, “Oh man, I went through some crap” or, “A friend of mine went through that”.

Jake Isaac sat down with Nitelife ahead of his show at Thekla this month to talk about his whirlwind music career, preshow rituals and what he’s got in the pipelines for the next few months.

‘With a lot of tracks, I get the music before the songs. I guess I didn’t really have a conventional process. I just got inspiration from different angles, whether it be other people’s stories, my own stories or music – and then seeing which ones stuck with me in terms of ideas.

‘I used to be a session percussionist and play drums for Duffy and a couple of other artists. I was also her music director when she first started out.

‘My favourite song from the album would have to be You and I Always, probably because I’m the most honest in that track. It takes a lot to be honest.’

‘I ended up playing drums for a couple of other pop artists, but then one day a friend of mine said I should try and give songwriting a go. My first two cuts as a songwriter were for Gabrielle and Blue. It was during that process another friend recommended I write my own stuff.

Perfectionism is part Jake’s craft; even before he goes on stage, putting that extra bit of thought into his performance to ensure everyone in the crowd has an independently great experience from his live shows.

‘At that point, I had been writing songs for while, so I gave it a try and shortly after, I met my first manager. A year later we were playing Glastonbury! ‘When you’re in it, it feels nuts, like nothing is happening and you don’t know what is going on with your life, or you don’t know what you’re doing. But looking back, in hindsight you realise, flippin’ heck, that was a little bit mad.’ While that might sound like a relatively speedy ascent to the top, Jake says that he really pushed himself once he decided to go solo and start pursuing a career as a singer songwriter. ‘I just felt like l 100% wanted to do this. I did a lot of networking and got into lots of sessions. That came from literally going out and meeting new people, late nights and

A lot of my inspiration has come from real life situations ‘I like to get to shows early so I can go into the actual venue before the show starts. I like to stand in the room from the crowd’s point of view. Before the doors open, I just like to walk around and stand in different corners of the room… I must look kind of creepy standing there, but I do it to get a feel for the room before the show. ‘Doing that makes me more aware of people in the crowd when I’m on stage. I don’t just want to perform to the middle

We’ve taken four songs from the new album and filmed and recorded stripped back acoustic versions with four of my mates. We’ve got Ella Eyre, Maverick Savour, St Raymond and a guy called Joel Baker or the front row, I’m always looking out for interaction across the room.’ Wrapping up our chat, Jake talks through his recently completed collaborative EP project: ‘I had this idea a while back and my label were really up for it. Basically, we’ve taken four songs from the new album and filmed and recorded stripped back acoustic versions with four of my mates. We’ve got Ella Eyre, Maverick Savour, St Raymond and a guy called Joel Baker, who are all fantastic artists in their own right. The final EP should be coming out in the next couple of months.’ Looking forward to his Thekla show this September, Jake recounts his previous experiences of playing in Bristol, where he seems to be slowly but surely growing a solid fan base. ‘This will be my third time playing in Bristol and hopefully it should be a pretty big party. The first time I had a headline gig in Bristol, there were about 20 or so people there and the second time we played there were 100 people. This time tickets are going pretty quick, so hopefully there will be an even bigger party this time round.’

34 // THE INFLUENCERS

THE INFLUENCERS // BEHIND THE SCENES WITH

NIGHTBUS nightBus Paul James: 28 Rhys Friery: 26

Taking over Mr Wolf’s on the third Saturday of every month is NightBus, a borderline concept night that wants to standardise the idea of paying to see unknown bands – and simply trusting it will be good. The monthly events are the lovechild of Paul James and Rhys Friery, who although they both make a living from bookings and promotion, are doing NightBus purely for the love of it. Paul is the bookings manager of Mr Wolf’s and No.51, and a freelance music photographer. Rhys worked for three years at The Nest in Bath – playing a key role in bringing live music to the venue – but now works freelance as a promoter, as well as playing the keys in brilliant Bristol band, Sleeptalking (who you can find on page 28 in this month’s Local Talent feature).

While the NightBus events, by name, have been around for a few years, the concept has been completely overhauled by Paul and Rhys. Previously run by local party DJ The Conductor, NightBus was a late night Thursday clubnight, where you could exchange an old bus ticket for a drink at the bar.

‘We wanted to bring all the acts that we love under one umbrella and NightBus seemed like the perfect identity for putting great music out there. As well as some great local acts, we try and bring in stuff that people haven’t seen before.

However, Rhys and Paul saw an opportunity to push some of the great local acts they believed in, while bringing the element of live music to a night out – and there’s still a free drink at the end of it.

‘All of the profits are reinvested back into the night, which means we can include more décor and more bands. We’ve got a special artist playing for our big Christmas show, which we can’t announce yet. Although all of the bands we’ve got, we’re really excited about.’

Now, instead of paying three or four quid on the door, your £3 advance ticket will get you access to a night of expertly curated live music, exposure to acts you may not have heard of, plus, plus a free Agwa cocktail to wash down your mirth. And The Conductor is still there in full force behind the decks from 12am-4am. With now over a year of ‘NightBus presents’ events on their tally, they’re starting to solidify a reputation as a brand in the know. ‘Myself and Paul have both worked for music venues,’ Rhys explains. ‘I play in bands and Paul’s a professional photographer – so we see a lot of music.

we’re doing something to give back to the people who support the scene ‘This is kind of like our party,’ says Paul. ‘We both do this for jobs anyway, but through friends, through favours, through contacts that we’ve built up, we get to pick and focus on our favourites. It’s not a big money making venture, we’re not trying to kick start a giant promotions company, we’re just trying to put on a good night. ‘If you look at the listings and you don’t recognise the name of the band, it’s about building that trust that it will be good live music to come and watch. ‘For that £3, you get two or three bands, a free drink and entry to a clubnight afterwards that finishes at 4am – we almost can’t give it away enough.’ ‘We’re just trying to guarantee a great party once a month,’ says Rhys. ‘Because as Paul said, we have other jobs and other venues we have to fill, but this is our night – this is the one night that we’re doing something to give back to the people who loyally support the scene.’ ‘It’s like booking your own birthday party every month with your favourite bands,’ says Paul. ‘I actually have done that,’ says Rhys. ‘The next party is my birthday and I’ve booked someone I’m very excited to see.’ Rhys and Paul originally met in Bath, where Rhys was running a night called Revolver, which transformed spaces that wouldn’t usually have live music for one night. ‘They were really sweaty underground nights,’ Rhys explains. ‘Terrible sound, terrible everything, but everyone had a great party. And to some extent, we are trying to rekindle the idea of what Revolver’s foundations were built on – people who were just really involved in the music scene.’ ‘I went to one of those nights and I thought, “These are the kind of nights I need to be involved in,”’ says Paul, who passed Rhys a business card after the show, kick starting both their working relationship and their friendship. Beyond doing a great service for the live music scene in terms of watching bands, it’s equally important to the pair of them to support the artists. A typical lineup will see a smaller,

We’re just trying to guarantee a great party once a month deserving acts with a bigger name, giving those smaller (but deserving) acts a bigger platform than they might be used to, and giving the audience a chance to discover some new music. ‘We always make sure the bands get paid,’ says Rhys. ‘If you’re not getting paid, don’t do it – that’s advice from someone in a band. It adds value to the night if the promoter is willing to put money in. If we don’t put money into the art, then what?’ ‘Bands still aren’t paid enough,’ says Paul. ‘It’s kind of a bad business model when you look at the equipment the band’s using and the rehearsal time, and all of that – it’s still never enough.’ ‘What’s the quote? Musicians are the only type of people to put five grand’s worth of gear in a £500 car and drive five hours for 50 quid,’ says Rhys. ‘It’s important to us and it’s a core value of ours.’

THE INFLUENCERS // 35

‘Each bit of money we can make from a show, we’re putting directly back into it,’ Paul says. ‘And as the show popularity expands, the shows will get better. ‘Nearly all of the money goes to the bands, not much of it goes to NightBus, as such. But we’ve been getting little bits and putting it into a pot to spend on things like this big Christmas event we want to put on. It will be a bigger band than would normally play at Wolf’s and a bigger band than we could usually get. ‘In fact, we’re probably the only people involved in the night that don’t get anything – apart from the satisfaction of a good night, obviously.’ The rest of the year’s NightBus parties are already confirmed, with a good mix of local and futher afield talent coming

to play at their Mr Wolf’s home. Voyages, Moriarty and Farebrother join them for this month’s party on 16 September. Imperial Daze, Honey Moons and SILAS will take to the stage for Rhys’ NightBus birthday party in October, and Greasy Slicks and Port Erin host the November party, before NightBus ring in the new year with their top secret blowout at Christmas. ‘In a year, we’d like to be talking to agents about getting certain acts in, and offering support slots to local acts who are doing good things,’ says Rhys. ‘All I want is for NightBus to be a reliably decent night!’ says Paul. ‘Through our other jobs – watching stuff not do well can be really soul destroying. To sit and watch a band play to a half empty room, it can get really tiring.’

It seems as though Paul’s not too far off his vision of a successful NightBus, with the monthly events steadily growing in popularity and word beginning to spread. ‘When BOMBS played at NightBus a couple of months ago – and they’re a band with a really dedicated fan base,’ says Rhys. ‘They told us that they played to a crowd they hadn’t played to before. So you think maybe something is working here, maybe something is happening.’
