CHARGED VOIDS, URBAN HOUSING PROGRAM, COLONIA, RIO DE JANEIRO

The secretary of housing invited the ETH, Zurich to suggest interventions in a popular housing program by the name of ‘My Home My Life’. After a close study of the program and its empirical a proposal was made to selectively intervene in the open spaces of the program and leave the embryo house that the program entails to grow organically over time. The open programmed spaces proposed with the program were integrated with the context with systematic connections and program selection. The resultant work along with others proposed by the students at the ETH was exhibited at StudioX in Rio de Janeiro and would eventually lead into a publication entitled ‘My Home My City’ towards the end of the year. This work would be presented to the Ministry of Housing to be incorporated in the commercial operation of the program. Thesis, MAS Urban Design, ETH, Zurich, 2013

CONGRUENT SUPERLATIVES, URBAN INTERVENTION, CABUCO DE BAXIO, SAO PAULO The program developed out of a call of the RENOVA urban commission in Sao Paulo to submit proposals or Urban intervention in the favelas of Sao Paulo. The identified site in the favela of Cabuco de Baxio in Sao Paulo lay alongside a river, making these houses precarious to live in owing to easy flooding in the area. The proposed housing for the displaced residents provided them with a source of livelihood to integrate them better in the new context alongside a community centre for activities that the local residents could undertake. The housing due to densification produced a surplus which could be used to house new incoming slum migrants. The topologies of housing proposed learning from the typologies and flexibility of favelas can offer multiple accommodation variables opening up to the masses. Urban agriculture was also proposed in the derelict area under the high tension lines lying close to the site which could plug into the commerce being developed on the site. URBAN RENOVATION, CIVIC CENTRE, ASHRAM ROAD, AHEMDABAD The area of study Ashram road lies on the eastern edge of the iconic Sabarmati River of the city of Ahemdabad (1.). The road which has developed into the liner Central business district of Ahemdabad is facing new development pressures from the River-front development. The identified area is a series of derelict cinema theatres from the 1960’s and is the perfect location for a new civic centre for the city with such activities presently missing from this important civic street of the city. The proposed complex is a set of Civic and commercial institution which respond to the pressures from the road on one side and mitigation of this new development on the other side (2.). The structure and Architectural language of the complex develops from the contextual juxtapositions emerging on the site. The Project responds to the Mill-owner’s building lying adjacent to the site (3,4.). The series of public spaces proportioned around the size and shape of the building lead up to it proposing for a publicizing of this derelict monument of Architecture.
