ABOUT ME: When I started my education in Boston Architectural College I was uncertain of the process I started. Being an international student unfamiliar with the process of finding a job and working in this field, I had no previous experience of working in architecture. Studying at the BAC and taking classes in the fields where I had lack of knowledge, gave me strength. I reviewed my resume and portfolio with my instructors, practice department, and advisors and through the constant comments on my work I developed a portfolio presenting my level of experience and excitement for working in this field. Experiencing my first job as Architectural Intern, in “Duckham Architecture & Interiors, Inc., was an opportunity for me to experience working on the residential projects, documenting the site before and after construction, working collaborative with colleagues and experience team work to meet deadlines for projects. I got involved in the office procedures, meeting with clients and updating the material and spec. Libraries of the architecture and interior design departments. Consulting with my practice advisor, and some other consultants at school, they reviewed my work process and gave me comments about integrating my education and my job, and based on my presentations they told me to start applying for a new job for bigger company and not hesitating for improving and expanding my experience horizon. I started my new job in Wadleigh & Associates, Inc. As Architect I employee. I had it in my mind to challenge myself and use my work as an opportunity to lean more while I’m benefiting from my architectural education at school, to be productive at work. This attitude led me to get to work with colleagues, the real estate and engineering department and expand my knowledge. I presented the work I did, to other colleagues in order to work as a team; attended architectural, structural and BRA meetings. Same time I keep consistent track of my work through NCARB records, and personal evaluations to improve in my career. I look forward to explore more opportunities for new experience.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION - CONCEPT

11

TAT Competition: “A city without people is not a city, and a city without housing doesn’t have any people,” says Robert J. Verrier, FAIA, co-founder and managing principal of the Architectural Team. “It’s very important to have people living in the down town.” Based on this, the firm introduced this competition, to involve students in designing for future of the city. The site is chosen as Fort Point Channel in South Boston.

Activity & Integration Concept: The intention is to create activities, inviting people to promote the site location. Also creating spaces on the site for enjoying the harbor view. > Vignette image explains the integration of different uses on site; as well as presenting activities & drawing attention. Green barrier against factories. < Plan of Boston+South Boston locating the Site. Since Boston’s North End water front is successful in attracting visitors and creating different activities next to the water, this attitude would be implemented in the design of the site. v Panoramic view from Fort Point Channel, explaining importance of water activity integration to site.

View to water and being engaged with the edge of water is an important advantage of this site to be considered.

FUTURE OF THE SITE CONCEPT

12

HARBOR WALK ANALYSIS The G2 site is located in South Boston owned by Gillette Factory. According to the new 100 Acres Master Plan of Boston the site is mixed use, with a concentration on residential. Existing site is a Parking lot, addressing the growth of Boston city, this site is defined as a multi use zone. Site adjacencies: to a parking lot on one side and commercial/ residential on other. < Study of activities on Harbor walk. v Harbor walk: Opportunity for attracting people to the site. Width & program of the harbor walk defines the attraction to site.

Concept Regarding Harbor walk: To keep the harbor walk as an important point for the site, and inviting programs to atract pedestrians on the path to walk in the site.

UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLES

Construction Studio - Fall 2013 Instructors : James Moses & Adam Mitchell Site : Belmont, MA Skills & Programs: Revit, Photoshop, Case studying, Drafting, Modeling

STUDIO OBJECTIVE “We are leaving the ground. The urban realm is under the influence of suburban spectacle, privileging the overt over the nuanced (‘pyramid’ over ‘labyrinth’). As our urban form is tailored by consumption and the market, the pre-modern city leaves just traces. We citizens live in the shadow of new towers. While we may lament the loss of the low rise city, ironically the new vertical landscape invites us to explore the ground.” (James Moses-U.P.) Learning goals of this project is to develop an explicit understanding of the relationship of the ground plane to the building; explore the potentials of type. The understanding of ground and facts that would impact ideas. Design considering the affecting matters on the program and site.

IMAGINE TWO ROOMS IN THE PROGRAM Criteria for Senior Housing: - Semi public/semi private spaces. - Including landscape design in program. - Provide walking paths. - Using natural materials for interior/exposed finishes. Stone and wood are most preferable. - Include recreation/pool/gym programs within the site. - Interior courtyards. - Spaces for inviting elderly to share activities and interact with each other. -Design with less detail so tenants can add their own touch of memories > Designing two rooms based on studies of the town and program selection.

TRANSFORMING BOSTON NEIGHBORHOOD COMPETITION

From website of Dwell: “A group of students at the Boston Architectural College (BAC) will be tackling a new design competition sponsored by the Chelsea, Massachusetts–based firm The Architectural Team. With a directive to bring the mixed and multi (mixed-use, mixed-income, multifamily) ideals of 21st-century sustainability to downtown Boston’s commercial and retail districts, students who are enrolled in the competition’s studio course will develop new visions for a downtown that they could want to—and even afford to—live in one day.” From website of Architectural Lab: “The Boston Architectural College (BAC) recently announced the winners of Transforming Boston’s Neighborhoods: The Future of Multifamily Housing, a new student design competition focusing on multifamily buildings and innovative urban planning, and sponsored by the nationally regarded, award-winning architecture and master-planning firm, The Architectural Team, Inc., In celebration of its more than four decades of designing affordable, creative housing solutions. Niusha Aghdaii received Honorable Mention for a proposal that combined waterfront development on Boston Harbor with a unique louvered wood facade design that balances natural daylight and views with privacy needs”

mercial purposes. The East Boston Project by Wadleigh Associates started in 2010.

As the population of Boston- one of the major cities in east

The Proposal calls for 135 residential rental units, 1,600 square

coast- increases the city of Boston has defined some of the

feet of retail space, and 206 covered parking spaces. An inte-

vacant lots in border of city to be designed for residential/com-

rior courtyard and common spaces designed for residents in the building. Given the recently finalized re-zoning of the East & West First Street neighborhood and the property’s location, there are retail spaces designed on the north side of the complex. And the access to parking would also be from the same side. However because of the slope in the site there would be 3 stories above ground of south side and 4 stories on north side. Design of the three-story brick, metal and pre-cast masonry clad building is compatible with the existing industrial and residential urban scale. It will noticeably enhance the neighborhood by reconnecting the gaps in the urban fabric & by in filling the block.

ABOUT SITE

The Project Site sits on approximately 66,313 square feet of land (one parcel) in the South Boston. Most of the neighborhood is new residential or vacant lots previously been industrial. This overall project offers enormous potential for a transit-oriented development that can take a major step in weaving back together a more sustainable and invigorated neighborhood.

DOCUMENT THE CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURE

(10to13) Drawing & drafting the framing plans section drawings and details. In this part of the project I learnt about the connection between structure and schematic design of a building & my knowledge from “Structure” & “Materials&methods” classes helped me to have better understanding of the content of the drawings. Using the markups by Structural engineer, I edited the framing plans. (14) photo of the building under construction, the proposed design can be seen on the top right part of the building. 14

Draft the proposed design, Construction documents, and document the finished building. The construction consisted of demolition, improving the foundation, framing the addition, finishing details.

HOME-OFFICE PARTITION - SCHEMATIC SKETCH

Preliminary sketches for a partition wall, that can hold equipments and materials, as well as taking minimum space possible. Follow the selected sketches in more detail to figure the assembly and structure of pieces.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & ASSEMBLY

Designing different part of the partition wall and shelves to be assembled together and ready for manufacturing.

73

74

DESIGN COMPLETION

Completing design by proposing color variations for the product and model the joint pieces for manufacturing or to be ordered. The assembly process is cost effective, and easy. The design is adjustable and taking least space possible while providing privacy separation in small living spaces. Designing the folding table, makes it possible to close the working surface during the time that it is not in use, in order to save more space.
