COLLISION DIVISION DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Here We Go Again

“ by Randy Miller, AASP-MN Collision Division Director

Here we are in the fall of 2019. It was a short and wet summer. It really went quickly for us in the upper Midwest, since it didn’t start until June and ended in September. Let’s hope there is still some nice weather yet to come! How we can pack the many personal events into 12 to 16 weeks is amazing. My employees were busy taking their vacations and personal time, reflecting on last year’s grueling winter and spring. Many organizations and groups try not to schedule events or meetings in the summer, as they know they may have low attendance. They leave everyone alone, so we all can just do our thing. Well, now that summer is over, I can feel some relief - only to think about what’s coming next. As a 38-year collision repair business owner, I’ve witnessed the reduction in my business

4 | November 2019

typically in September and October each year, as the kids go back to school and everyone shifts their lifestyles out of summer mode. If I examine my books and pull a graph it always takes a dip in the fall, even if we are slammed with work. This year is no exception. It may not be like that for everyone in the collision repair industry, but in southern Minnesota it seems to be a trend. I have taken this opportunity every year to make the best of it by providing our CE classes for agents, or going through the shop, office equipment, toolboxes and paint booth to put everything in its place, clean and make needed repairs. We pressure wash the shop completely – from the ceiling on down – as the employees do appreciate, and now demand, a clean shop environment.

AASP-MN News

The opportunity to advance your shop starts again. I consider each fall to be the beginning of a new year for my business.

’’

There is an advantage to having this slight pause, but the most crucial thing is to get all employees geared up for the months ahead. We remind ourselves during shop meetings and discussions how the industry is going to ramp up through the winter months. We make sure our processes are covered for all circumstances. Employees take their I-CAR classes and all the associations are getting busy introducing new seminars and learning opportunities. The industry has many activities including SEMA, Fender Bender Management Conference, PPG Conference, the AASP-MN’s Race for Automotive Education in January 2020 and the Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference in April, to mention a few. Plus, all the meetings and online, industry-specific seminars. The opportunity to advance your shop starts again. I consider each fall to be the beginning of a new year for my business. Every shop owner has the choice to associate themselves with insurance companies and OEMs, many of which require retooling and education. There are many seminars and industry leaders giving us more information than we can absorb. It’s truly amazing the amount that is out there. It takes a bit of research to determine what the priorities are for your business, but the information is out there. And, let’s not forget about the consolidators that are trying to get every business to join them by claiming to be the best in the industry. If you do the research, I’m sure you’ll find that most owners say they are busier than ever before. So, with a little anxiety, I say let’s make it another good year. It starts now. Get your shop in shape to handle all of what’s coming - more deer hits, a good forecast for ice and snow and all the information that is there to be used by your shop personnel, technicians and management. This is a great opportunity for shops – it’s only going to get busier. No complaints here!

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Back and Forth in the Legislative Process by Kevin Walli, AASP-MN Lobbyist

People who participate in the legislative process almost never get exactly what they want. This is clearly the case with AASP-MN’s proposal that would make it an unfair claims practice for an insurer to deny payment for a repair completed in accordance with an original vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. We had our opening round of proposals and counter-proposals last March as the House and Senate Committee deadline approached. Even though the clock ran out on our efforts, we took it as a temporary setback and renewed our efforts to keep insurers at the table. After meetings and conference calls in August and September, we are now on our fifth version of language to accomplish our objective. The insurance industry recently agreed to name a work group on their part and to meet with a work group on our part, to try

and resolve our remaining differences before the legislature convenes on February 11. In fact, we probably need to get these things resolved several weeks before the 2020 Legislative Session begins so that we have time to brief our authors and committee chairs on our “agreement” to ensure that we have committee time reserved to hear and pass a compromise proposal. In the end, our intention remains to make meaningful change to Minnesota’s insurance claims practices statute, which will ensure recognition of and payment for repairs properly made in accordance with a vehicle manufacturer’s directives. This seems like a straightforward and sensible objective – one which will certainly provide for the safe operation of repaired vehicles. It is this broader public safety interest that we hope to

harness in order to find mutually acceptable language with our counterparts in the insurance industry. So, we have gone back and forth, several times, and we have more of this back and forth ahead of us. As time consuming and frustrating as the pro-cess can be, however, it’s the customary path to change and improve the laws that govern the claims process. As such, we will keep at it until our goal is accomplished.

LOCAL NEWS Highlights of the “Beyond the Four Strokes” and “GM Advanced Safety Systems” Seminars On October 16, the Alliance hosted “Beyond the Four Strokes” for automotive service professionals. The threehour clinic used real-world scenarios from several vehicle manufacturers to help answer the question, “What do you do when you have swapped plugs, injectors and coils and you still have a misfire?” The seminar also covered mechanical-related misfires diagnosis, SIDI engine service techniques and the most recent engine sensor technology. On October 17, nearly 50 people attended “GM Advanced Safety Systems.” The clinic covered procedures to be followed while making collision repairs for safe operation of a vehicle post-accident, including: • Side Blind Zone Alert • Lane Departure • Haptic Seats • Rear Vision Camera • Parking Assist • Adaptive Cruise Control

www.langmarketing.com Detroit Has Lost the U.S. Market Forever Just 25 years ago, the Detroit Three (then heralded as the Big Three) dominated the new vehicle market in the U.S., with a 75 percent sales share. All that has changed. The Detroit Three accounted for only 45 percent of 2018 new vehicle volume, and there are strong indications that U.S. nameplate sales share will sink even further in the next few years. The Detroit Three accounted for 75 to 78 percent of new vehicle volume each year between 1975 and 1995, but it plunged to 56 percent from 1995 to 2005. Between 1995 and 2018, Detroit Three vehicle sales suffered a 40 percent loss of market share, resulting in tens of millions in light vehicle unit sales lost. Lang Marketing estimates domestic nameplate aftermarket product sales have been reduced by a total of more than $100 billion at user-price from 1995 to 2018 as a result of the

changing VIO mix of domestic and foreign nameplates. This loss by domestic nameplates has been more than counterbalanced by the massive aftermarket product gain of foreign nameplate light vehicles. Lang Marketing projects the Detroit Three’s share of 2023 new vehicle volume in the U.S. could fall below 40 percent as a result of the dramatic reduction of car models that it will offer and GM’s decision to discontinue hybrid models in favor of fully electric vehicles. $12 Billion DIFM Outlet Volume Surge Three forces are shifting Parts and Labor volume among repair outlets: The evolving mix of foreign and domestic nameplates in the U.S., the growing technical complexity of light vehicle repair and changes in the competitive strength of the major repair outlet groups. These forces (and others) will create a $12 billion change during 2018 and 2019 in the parts and labor volume of the seven major groups of Do-It-For-Me (DIFM) outlets in the U.S. Six Major Takeaways: • Total light vehicle DIFM volume (parts and labor) will soar by $12 billion during 2018 and 2019, at user-price. • Vehicle dealers will account for the largest share of parts and labor growth during this two-year span, generating approximately 30 percent of the $12 billion increase during 2018 and 2019. • Repair specialists (outlets focusing on a limited array of vehicle repair) will rank second in DIFM volume growth, expanding their parts and labor sales $2.9 billion at user-price. • Service stations and garages will rank third in the DIFM sales gain over this two-year span, recording a $2.3 billion increase.

AASP-MN News

• Three additional DIFM outlets will account for significant portions of the $12 billion car and light truck DIFM volume increase during 2018 and 2019: Foreign repair specialists, tire stores and discount stores/mass merchandisers with bays. • Car and light truck parts will represent approximately 48 percent of the DIFM volume gain, with labor (purchased service) generating the majority, 52 percent, of the increase.

in order to be more competitive with independent (non-dealer) outlets. • Evolving bay strategies of dealers are having a DIFM impact, as Lang Marketing projects dealers during 2019 will record one of their largest gains in service bay parts and labor growth in many years.

Evolving Dealer Bay Parts and Labor Pricing A growing number of dealers are adopting an “all-makes, all-years” strategy which often involves not using OE parts when servicing select vehicles. This enables dealers to be more competitive with independent (non-dealer) service outlets in the rapidly expanding Do-It-For-Me (DIFM) market for older cars and light trucks. Six Major Takeaways: • Dealers are opening their bays to a wider range of vehicle age groups and nameplates. • To attract a broader mix of vehicles (other than the nameplates they sell new) and to appeal to consumers with older vehicles, dealers are offering a variety of parts as alternatives to OE brands. • Many dealers are offering a Good, Better, Best parts selection for service bay use. These parts vary in price and quality, relative to OE brands. • OE brands are the Best level parts used by dealers, and Better parts are represented by OE supplier brands. Good parts (generally aftermarket brands) are obtained by dealers from a variety of sources. • With average dealer Labor Rates topping $120 per hour, many dealers are lowering their labor prices for work on older vehicles

LET US TURN THEM AROUND!

Don’t pick it up with your hands, even if you wear gloves. It’s too easy to poke yourself. That’s how a lot of nurses and laboratory technicians become infected. They recap needles successfully most of the time, but it only takes one miss to become infected. Instead, use pliers or another tool to pick up the needle. Then put it in a hard puncture-resistant container, such as a detergent jug. Seal the container and label it as infectious waste. According to the MPCA, “businesses that find infectious waste in employee, customer, or public areas or vehicles during cleaning” can handle those sharps the same way a household would. The razor blades that we see abandoned throughout body shops are considered sharps. But their disposal isn’t regulated, because they don’t have the potential to be infected unless someone is cut with one. Decrease the risk of that. Have employees dispose of those in punctureresistant containers. We like what one shop did, using small paint cans labeled as “old razor blades.” • Watch out for needles and other

ESTIMATING TIPS Mitchell: Frame Assembly R/R – Additional consideration: Mitchell CEG Collision Estimating Guide > Procedure Explanations > 9 Frame> Frame Assembly R & R NOTE: Frame Assembly R&R requires planning. Proper preparation and job sequencing are key to performing this operation. Also, special equipment, additional workspace and manpower may be needed. NOTE: It may be necessary to transfer parts from the damaged frame or order new parts to use on the new frame. This cannot be determined until you see the new frame. The needed additional time for this operation must be estimated. We also suggest utilizing page 17 of the SCRS Guide for additional considerations to frame replacement. CCC: Impact to Labor when Replacing Door Shell & Mirror – The DEG has posted a video on YouTube demonstrating a scenario that requires manual line consideration when replacing a door shell and a door mirror that has multiple parts not included in the mirror assembly. Check it out here: youtu.be/F7SDISs_RQ8.

CCC: New Feature for Disassemble/Reassemble Mirror Assembly – In this video, the DEG shows how to use the new single line “disassemble/reassemble for refinishing” feature. This is a NOT INCLUDED operation when refinishing or replacing a mirror. Find it here: youtu.be/eGrQgBCVLDk. All Three Systems: Verifying OEM Repair information – A recent DEG Inquiry on a 2015 Lexus GX SUV revealed the importance of utilizing OEM repair information versus third-party “published” information without first doing a current-date information request. The information available from the third-party service showed the engine must be R/I for access to replace the steering rack. However, when verifying the procedure in the OEM subscription site, the most current OEM procedure from Lexus had been updated NOT requiring the engine R/I for replacement of the steering rack. This could potentially cause labor not required or missing required steps reflected in the correct repair information.

Note: The estimating databases are all intended to be used as a GUIDE ONLY - it is important to remember that the auto body professional performing the repair is in a position to thoroughly inspect, diagnose and identify the methodology and their unique cost of the vehicle damage repair. You can view these tips and others on the DEG website, DEGWEB.ORG.

PARTNERS IN PREVENTION

Zero-Percent Interest Loans for Small Businesses The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) provides zero-percent interest loans to small businesses for capital equipment purchases that meet or exceed environmental regulations and costs related to the investigation and cleanup of contaminated sites. Some eligible projects include purchasing a solvent recycler, switching to a water-based parts washer or installing a new paint booth to switch to waterborne paint. Additionally, these projects could decrease your hazardous waste bill and reduce exposure to harmful pollutants for your employees, your customers and your shop’s neighbors. They could also decrease regulatory fees and requirements. Eligibility and conditions Many business sectors are eligible. Projects that reduce regulatory obligations are highly encouraged. To qualify, a borrower must be an existing small business corporation, sole

applications are based on the applicant’s ability to secure and repay the loan, and the project’s expected environmental benefits. All project costs must be pre-approved and cannot be acted upon until the application process is complete. Borrowers must report on the project’s realized environmental and economic benefits. When your loan has been repaid, the money will be loaned to other small businesses so they can make environmental improvements, too. It’s a virtuous cycle and you can be part of it. A screening committee composed of financial and environmental professionals evaluates each application.
