MESSAGE A SMALLER, CLOSER WORLD

A lot has changed in this industry since I wrote my first article about it way back in the fall of 2000. Back then, putting words together for a state collision repair organization largely meant representing an insular world. Associations back then mostly operated as individual planets, only occasionally discussing national events in favor of focusing on things happening within their own borders. That didn’t last long. The last decade or so has seen an array of inter-state activities and collaborations. The internet has helped this along in a big way, but the biggest contributing factor to this positive development is the fact that nobody in this business can grow and survive on their own. These days, events like the Collision Industry Conference (CIC) and the Open Board Meetings of the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) showcase repairers from various states working together to address everything impacting their professional lives. The phrase “strength in numbers” has been said forever in the auto body community, but it’s never been more relevant than it is right now. A clear and deeply encouraging example of this trend is the ongoing partnership between WMABA and the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ) that resulted in the educational offerings at the recent NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show in Secaucus, NJ. AASP/NJ provided the location and event, and WMABA delivered the classes – speaker after speaker sharing some of

MESSAGE COLLISION P.R.E.P. EDUCATION PACKS THE SECOND PUNCH AT NORTHEAST The second edition of Collision P.R.E.P. was again a wonderful experience full of insightful and informative presentations and material valued by each and every attendee. WMABA is proud to put this program together and offer it to the entire country – and especially in the East Coast, where our membership is the primary focus.

Jordan Hendler

(804) 789-9649 jordanhendler@wmaba.com

Working with the leadership of the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ) for the NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show, WMABA focused yet again on bringing in the highest quality speakers and presentations. The panel on OEM certification was again the most crowded session, with many of the panelists new this year. It was moderated by standout repairers Barry Dorn of Dorn’s Body and Paint – also a WMABA Board member – and Ron Reichen of Precision Body and Paint, who engaged the panelists with repairer-driven questions from their own experiences. The tracks of education an individual could participate in varied, especially if multiple representatives of the shop could attend and catch even more! This was so that every person in a facility could learn content relevant to them. In future years, we hope to expand the offerings in this manner. We are so proud of the success of this program! Next year, we hope to have you join us for this not-to-be-missed education event! H&D

WHAT’S UP TO? WMABA MEMBERSHIP: THE UN-SECRET PLAYBOOK It’s always a good time to get involved in WMABA. If you’re reading this, your first benefit is already being realized: Staying up to date on the news in our area and beyond.

Get Your Team Jersey Supporting WMABA is an investment in the future of your business and your industry. By becoming a member, you are represented in all the places the Board or executive director go. Whether at a trade show like SEMA, assisting with the SCRS OEM Technology Summit regarding certified repairs or locally at the state capitol meeting legislators or testifying at a hearing, your interests and the interests of all repairers are at the forefront. Though repairers often feel competitive, the association is a place for camaraderie and community. Here, we’re all on the same team. Get Educated WMABA offers issue-specific, topic-driven education throughout the year. Participation in special events and local meetings, such as the Audi Training Center-hosted seminar and tour, offers your business the best in opportunities to advance your understanding of changes within our industry.

The Playbook The association is your resource for all things related to your business. Whether you have a question about current Labor Rate data, operations, customer interaction, insurer relationships, vendor products or national news, your association is the place to ask first. Through our relationships nationally, we can even take issues to the forefront of places such as the Society of Collision Repair Specialists, Collision Industry Conference or national contacts for insurers and vendors. Locally, we research governmental regulations and oversight to make sure the repair industry is protected from any negative legislation. Represented in both Virginia and Maryland, WMABA proposes and opposes recommended bills that come into the legislature during open session. Also, we work with consumer-related entities, government agencies and other related industry organizations to ensure that the voices of the repairer and their customer are heard. Many repairers take advantage of the knowledge and community the association has for navigating situations that arise. A simple phone call or email can circumvent many issues our members encounter.

Call the Game As a member, you decide your personal level of participation. Do you have interest in committees that address particular issues you feel passionately about? Would you want to be a Board member and assist in guiding the direction of the association? How about sitting on the sidelines so you can focus on your own business? All answers can be correct! While WMABA would like to encourage your spirit of volunteerism, it is solely up to you at what level you get involved. The minimum is getting your membership. This year can WIN with your commitment to the betterment of your business and your industry. Sign up today! H&D

INSURERS: WMABA Insurance Survey Results

An informed consumer is a safer customer. Following through on a strong commitment to offering consumer-driven resources, tools and information to its collision repair membership, WMABA kicked off 2019 by launching an Insurance Survey that allowed repairers to rate insurers on market conduct. The results gathered rate insurers on their communicating and handling of claims, knowledge of repair processes, payment for OEM-related repairs and more. “The most important thing is that this is just for information purposes only; it can be used, or not,” explains WMABA Executive Director Jordan Hendler. “We surveyed our entire membership region, but we also opened it to anyone of any area. Some of the other state affiliates did provide the survey to their members. We didn’t have enough responses to be statistically valid, but we hope to in the future. It’s just to start a discussion and get people thinking.” Repairers were asked to give 22 insurers a score of 1 to 5, with 1 the lowest and 5 the highest. Erie Auto Insurance received the best rating in all areas except payment for proper procedures and knowledge-base, where Amica came out ahead. (Amica rated second in all other categories.) Shops gave their lowest scores to National General Insurance in all five categories, with MAPFRE

OVERALL FAIRNESS

SHOP RELATIONS - CLAIMS HANDLING

Several respondents offered written comments when sending back this Survey. Here are some highlights: “GEICO and Progressive are allowing for low-end aftermarket parts regardless of the age or the value of the car.”

“I’ve waited a week to have an appraiser from State Farm out for supplemental damages. They’re telling the customer they could avoid delays by taking it to one of their shops.” “Insurance companies do not know the correct way to fix vehicles. Most of the adjusters are right out of college. They know how to use a computer, but they’ve never worked on cars. They never fix cars to OEM procedures and

jeopardize the safety of the insureds and their families.”

“It’s really questionable to pretend that any of these insurance companies care about anything other than their bottom-line profits. There is a concerted attempt to delay and deny claims to the detriment of the consumer and the liability of the shop. Unfortunately, most shops play along out of fear and a complete lack of business acumen. Knowledge of the law is sadly lacking. This industry is in a sad state, and that starts and ends with the shops. Their behavior is playing to the insurance

company like they work for them instead of the real customer.”

“The insurance industry as a whole should put vehicle safety before profits. Unfortunately, they price their policies to attract and retain customers without regard for the changing repair procedures required by today’s highly advanced vehicles. They consistently base reimbursement payments off of what they can get shops to do for free or not. They do this without regard for what the OEM dictates.”

HD0519.qxp_Layout 1 4/11/19 6:03 PM Page 18

COVER STORY

North America, GEICO/Berkshire Hathaway, Allstate and Liberty Mutual also ranking near the bottom in each category. Although a handful of repairers offered negative comments on State Farm, the carrier stayed above water in most categories, ranking third in the handling claims process, fourth in knowledge-base and fourth in payment for proper procedures. Many respondents used the comments section to opine that some insurers are most concerned with their own bottom line profit, will disregard what OEMs dictate or will commonly state they won’t pay for particular procedures. “The overall results are not really surprising, because there are a lot of discussions with our members about marketplace issues that arise,” Hendler observes. “I will say the positive responses for the top two or three insurers did confirm some of what we hear. Several negative responses are also in line with the complaints we’ve been getting.” The association has regularly conducted Labor Rate Surveys in the past (and plans to do so bi-annually), but this insurer-focused undertaking was a first. Hendler hopes distributing these findings will shed light on potential commonalities in markets outside of the WMABA region. “Many repairers feel as though their opinions of insurance companies don’t matter, but they certainly do here at WMABA. We work with many national contacts, and being able to show them what’s happening in a meaningful way is beneficial for all. I know that some insurance companies think a process or tactic is mutually beneficial when it isn’t, and repairers usually only complain to others and not in direct response. When there’s open dialog, there is more chance for improvement on both sides. We just want to help raise the awareness and professionalism of our collective industry, and this can be one useable aspect of that. Celebrating those who do well shows that we do appreciate the carriers who try to do the right thing.” H&D This survey is not considered statistically valid and is for informational purposes only. WMABA hopes future participation increases to show more relevant market data that is statistically valid.

Raising the bar for education.

Navigating the Certification Maze

Co-moderated by Barry Dorn (Dorn’s Body & Paint; Mechanicsville, VA) and Ron Reichen (Precision Body & Paint; Beaverton, OR), the “OEM Repair Panel: The Changing Landscape in Certified Repair, and Understanding the OEM Repair Procedures” at NORTHEAST® 2019 tackled certifications and procedures with panelists Leigh Guarnieri (American Honda Motor Co.), Aaron Clark (Assured Performance Network), Rick Miller (Wadsworth International), Mark Allen (Audi of America), Ken Park (Volvo) and Dave Gruskos (Reliable Automotive Equipment). The lengthy discussion took a deep and honest look inside the realities and demands facing facilities that want to step up and take advantage of OEM-promoted work. Gruskos made it clear that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to equipping a shop to serve multiple manufacturers. “The equipment for the different programs is very specific. There is no magical item that can keep everybody happy. The car companies do a tremendous amount of testing on a piece of equipment before it’s approved, and the specifics of that piece are not going to change. Prior to ever thinking of getting certified, get a copy of the list directly from the car company. If there are any questions, bring it up with the program lead.” Park noted that Volvo will soon be restricting “anything that is boron or aluminum” to its certified collision centers alone, adding that this and other programs are demanding more from the auto body community than it could have ever imagined just a few years ago. “The time of playing games with fixing these cars is gone. The future of the industry is elite.” Of course, equipment is only as good as the people using it. Clark cautioned that owners need to be mindful of who in the shop is receiving the training under the certification banner. “There’s certainly no question that there’s a huge hole out there in a lot of shops where they just haven’t put the training to the individuals who need that training specifically. That’s what I think concerns me. Even though the training

Clockwise from top left: Leigh Guarnieri, Barry Dorn, Dave Gruskos, Mark Allen, Rick Miller, Aaron Clark, and Ken Park. may exist within an organization, it’s not [going to] the person who actually needs to apply [it] to repair the vehicle.” As for the future, Allen suggested that shops that truly want to survive need to look at growing technologies that will soon completely reshape the industry. “How equipped and ready are you for electronic vehicles? Know they’re coming. There’s something else to think about.” Above all, Reichen urged attendees to not let fear of the unfamiliar prevent them from embracing new opportunities for work. “If you cannot find an OE repair procedure, [go to] oem1stop.com and reach out to these gentlemen [on the panel]. They’re not untouchable; don’t hesitate to reach out to them.” Coverage continues on page 26

NATIONAL FEATURE continued from page 23 “Collision Advice” on Scanning, Better Negotiations

How important is pre- and post-repair scanning to today’s collision repair industry? Consider that an average Lexus has 100 million lines of code – roughly seven times the amount found in a Boeing 787 plane! This and other realities prompted industry speaker and former WMABA Board member Mike Anderson (Collision Advice) to travel to NORTHEAST® 2019 to give the firstever presentation of his new course, “Scanning Best Practices.” Anderson delved into topics including how to overcome common insurer objections, key search terms to use in OEM repair procedures, differences between OEM and aftermarket scan tools, available industry resources and what the future will hold for telematics. Although shops and insurers struggle to reach common ground on scanning, Anderson stressed that there is no reason good enough to avoid performing this increasingly critical procedure. “I am of the belief, based on my experience, that it is absolutely impossible to write an accurate damage analysis on a vehicle without doing a pre-repair scan. We’re working on highly complex devices. That’s what has led the OEMs to come out with position statements and documentation in regard to pre- and post-repair scanning.”

A “Repairer to Repairer” Look at Structural Work

“You have to start thinking about [auto body work] from an engineering point of view and not so much a repairer’s point of view.” This statement was at the heart of North K. Michael Bradshaw Carolina-based shop owner K. Michael Bradshaw’s “Repairer to Repairer: Realities of Structural Repair and Tooling” presentation at NORTHEAST 2019. One of this year’s most anticipated Collision P.R.E.P. events, the Saturday evening talk examined the whys and hows behind properly identifying structural components and associated not-included repair operations, with special attention given to ways that technicians could more accurately utilize advanced equipment, materials and techniques to improve their bottom line. With proper structural repairs serving a vital role in preserving occupant safety, Bradshaw noted that today’s vehicles are designed with load paths and crush zones to transfer energy around vehicle passengers to better prevent injuries in a collision. Additionally, the front bodies of modern vehicles are largely designed to aid in the energy-absorption process.

It’s Time to Evolve

The auto body world will never stop changing. The shops that will meet the challenges of the collision marketplace of the 21st century are those that will be able to become agile in every aspect of their business. With this in mind, Lee Rush of Sherwin-Williams presented “Evolution, Not Revolution: Agile Re-Manufacturing,” a special Collision P.R.E.P. seminar at NORTHEAST 2019. The Sunday class provided attendees with some of the concepts and tools necessary to implement agile processes without causing disruption to their business, develop a practical process for that business, produce predictable and consistent workflow, reduce delays, improve production and improve customer and employee satisfaction. In Rush’s mind, one of the biggest changes to impact the industry in recent times is the need to adapt a realistic approach to the Lean mindset on the shop floor. “The main reason why the collision repair industry doesn’t fit well within Lean, Lean manufacturing and the Lean-thinking concept is because we’re a low-volume, high-variable business. Those concepts work really well on a manufacturing line – with 1,000 units a day – but they’re low-variable. In our business, everything we do has variation in it. Every vehicle is hit with a

What are shops across America charging and receiving to perform scans? Through the quarterly “Who Pays for What?” nationwide industry surveys conducted by Collision Advice in conjunction with John Yoswick of CRASH Network, Anderson revealed that shops’ rates for these services are “across the board,” causing a lack of consistency out in the field. “In my conversations with insurers, most of Mike Anderson them do not have a problem paying for scans... They want to pay what’s fair and reasonable. Some people are charging a halfhour body [rate] or a half-hour [mechanical rate]; others are charging an hour. This creates a problem in the workplace while we’re trying to get paid from an insurer.” Later at NORTHEAST, Anderson presented “Write it Right, with Life Nuggets to Live By,” a discussion detailing (among other things) rules for more successful negotiations and tools (including the Database Enhancement Gateway [DEG], EstimateScrubber and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists’ Guide to Complete Repair Planning) that enable shops to better capture not-included items. “Ten years ago, most people in this industry didn’t really know that. People’s knowledge level as to why that’s so important is a lot higher now. It’s important to understand [these things] so we can understand how the decisions we make as repairers can impact the safety of the vehicle. Modernday structure repairs require mass tools, advanced equipment, a lot of training, a lot of research and an overall understanding of how that works in conjunction with one another so we can put the vehicle back as close as humanly possible to pre-accident condition per the manufacturer repair guidelines.” As shops work to keep up with all the changes occurring around them, he recommends that they think very hard about the equipment and procedural requirements of working on certain vehicles – and when it makes sense to turn down a job. “We’ve got something like 28 different certifications at our shop, and there are cars that we can’t work on…I think in this industry, there are a lot of shops that are too prideful to tell a customer, ‘We’re not equipped to be working on your car; we shouldn’t be working on it.’ Whatever money or potential profit you’re going to make on taking in a vehicle you don’t have the equipment to work on is not worth the liability you expose yourself to in the long run.” different severity…I don’t know if there’s another industry that exists in North America that has a higher degree of variation than the collision industry.” Of course, advanced driver-assistance systems Paul Stern Lee Rush (ADAS), steering angle sensors and other advanced safety-related technologies are among the advancements driving the future. Paul Stern of LiftNow Automotive Equipment explored these topics and more during “Safety System Alignment: A New Focus on Body Shop Profitability.” The presentation went deep into the profitability that body shops can enjoy from participating and specializing in these new industry trends as well as how to navigate challenging insurance company dynamics to get paid for their services. There was no better time for this conversation to take place. According to Stern, there were about 236 million vehicles on the road in 2015, with “just shy of 15 million of them [being] 2015 models.” He added that “about 70 percent of 2015 vehicles [included] steering angle sensors that require some sort of safety system reset.” Coverage continues on page 30

NATIONAL FEATURE continued from page 26 “Of all the amazing classes offered, many were standouts, including Mike

Anderson of Collision Advice’s new ‘Scanning Best Practices’ class, the OEM Repair Panel

and the first-time ‘Repairer to Repairer: Realities of Structural Repair and Tooling’

discussion that was presented by Michael Bradshaw from K&M Collision [Hickory, NC],”

shares WMABA Executive Director Jordan Hendler. “For the OEM Repair Panel, ‘The Changing Landscape in Certified Repair, and Understanding the OEM Repair Procedures,’ we had a lot of shops exiting saying they had a firmer grasp of expectations from the OEMs and the programs they administrate. It’s certainly a very hot topic for all the right reasons. The most important thing is that every class was a hit; all our speakers did a dynamite job and gave relevant and timely information.” After attending NORTHEAST for the first time in 2018, WMABA Board member Steve Krieps and his daughter Myah again made the trip up to take in the festivities. His attendance throughout the weekend was in line with his commitment to getting as much insight into his profession as possible. “I enjoy getting around, getting to meet people from the industry and hearing about the new things that are coming along. Unless you’re involved, you really don’t hear about the new stuff until it’s too late.” This year, Krieps made a point to take in any Collision P.R.E.P. course pertaining to scanning, advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and proper documentation. In his mind, succeeding in these areas means protecting his shop as much as it means providing a safe repair for his customers. “The business aspects, while very important, may seem like a moot point if you don’t have your ducks in a row.” Longtime WMABA member Peter Kelyman (Wheaton Auto Body; Wheaton, MD)

BASF on Data and Accuracy

In addition to supporting NORTHEAST® as a Platinum Show Sponsor, BASF provided two of the most informative and well-received Collision P.R.E.P. presentations at this year’s event. BASF Vision+ Program Manager Craig John Shoemaker Seelinger presided over “Business Data, Knowing Your Craig Seelinger Unknowns,” a Friday afternoon seminar devoted to the importance of shops compiling and implementing the most accurate data possible. He explained how seemingly simple inconsistencies – like having “State Farm” and “ST Farm” or “Chevrolet” and “Chevy” in a shop’s files – could wreak havoc on the business’ ability to properly track its successes and problem areas. “False, inaccurate data will give you false, inaccurate analysis. If you want to lie to your management system – and print reports and look at trends – you’ll get lies right back. It’ll tell you exactly what you put in it. It’s best to be honest. If things aren’t good, wouldn’t you rather know that than paint this picture of, ‘Oh, everything is fine; look at our numbers’?” During “Damage Assessment Documentation: Key Steps for Maximum Reimbursement,” BASF Business Development Manager John Shoemaker provided step-by-step documentation tips to gain maximum reimbursement on scanning, associated/related damage, measuring and structure repair time, adhesives and corrosion protection, mechanical repairs, interior paint, tire documentation requirements and various refinish operations. Naturally, he cited accuracy as the biggest key to being properly paid in today’s industry. “A lot of times, when we send an estimate up, we send up more questions than we send answers. We’ll put a manual line item in there and not really explain what it is...If it’s an insurer that’s going to pay the bill, most of those times, those people have to explain it to somebody else. If they can’t explain it, then it’s probably forgotten and disallowed.”

attended NORTHEAST for the first time this year due to the association’s efforts to better educate and equip shops in his region. “I wanted to support Jordan and WMABA and participate in [the show] since they were going through the effort of doing it. I had never been to any of these shows before, so I wanted to see how it was and experience it.” In addition to noting the convenience of several hotels being located within walking distance of the Meadowlands Exposition Center, Kelyman was quick to praise the value he received from attending Anderson’s

new scanning course, the website marketing/design discussion by Brent Betts of AP Digital (“Expand Your Customer Base – Reach More Online Collision Repair Customers”) and the informative “Estimate Toolbox: Using FREE Resources to Complete an Accurate Vehicle Damage Repair Plan” presentation by Danny Gredinberg of the Database Enhancement Gateway (degweb.org). Kevin Marvin, body shop manager at Criswell Collision in Annapolis, was so inspired after attending the 2018 show on his own that he brought along his body shop director and a service writer this time around. Like many, he was impressed by Anderson’s talk on scanning, adding that he found tremendous value in the interactive chat led by Chuck Olsen of AirPro Diagnostics (“Scanning and Calibration – Getting it Right for Successful ADAS Diagnostics”). By the following Monday, Marvin and his team were

ambitious – he wants to send everybody next year! It seems like the show has become the new NACE – from the vendors to the education. It’s also

convenient being on the East Coast. It makes it a worthwhile trip not to be missed.” Dave Gruskos (Reliable Automotive Equipment) presented “OEM Repair Methods and Advanced Technologies,” which dove into the many advances in materials and technology that shops face in today’s marketplace. The discussion focused on current and future trends, OEM repair methods and evolutions in related education and training. Veteran NORTHEAST presenter Frank Terlep (asTech) returned for “Automotive Industry Disruption: Will Your Business be a Winner?” The intriguing course explored OEM manufacturers’ move towards a “mobility model” focusing on data warehousing, autonomous vehicles, subscription services and technology integrators. Terlep’s talk aimed to better prepare attendees to survive and thrive within the “mass disruption” of this and other industry developments. The increasingly hot topic of KPIs and “severity” was tackled by AkzoNobel’s Charlie Whitaker during “You Schedule How?” Shop personnel who attended this Sunday afternoon course left with a better understanding of insurer metrics and the parts of “severity” that are truly under their control. During “Building the Bulletproof File: Documentation for Repair and Reducing Liabilities,” Mark Olson of VECO Experts offered insight into avoiding liability by showing attendees how to make a

Hendler is excited by the possibility of having WMABA and AASP/NJ collaborate on other educational initiatives down the road. “WMABA is proud to work with AASP/NJ when it comes to presenting the education at NORTHEAST. This is a unified effort to bring the best there is from around the country, and I think we’re

doing a great job together. The education available, along with a trade show to talk to vendors, is a powerful combination. We’ve received some feedback that will help us get even better and continue to keep pace with advancements in technology, vehicle repair processes and

the industry itself.” AASP/NJ is already hard at work planning for NORTHEAST 2020, scheduled for March 20-22, 2020 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center. Visit aaspnjnortheast.com for updates on next year’s event as they become available. H&D

Just like equipment and training, WMABA membership is not only a commitment to excellence, but also a valuable investment. WMABA is recognized both regionally and nationally as the key forum for the exchange of ideas concerning the D.C., MD, VA and WV collision repair industry. It is the venue to discuss, learn about and impact evolving standards and policies in the technical, administrative and legislative fronts of our industry. Shops and industry supporters can best develop themselves and their employees by actively engaging in the association and its activities. Automotive collision repair facilities in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C. who are willing to adopt WMABA’s Standards of Membership and offer a guarantee to their consumers are encouraged to engage their business as an active member of the association. For over 40 years, the WMABA membership of professional collision repair businesses and affiliates have committed to operating at a higher standard on behalf of their industry and their consumers. Over the years, WMABA has proudly represented the collision repair industry at hearings on Capitol Hill, in Annapolis, MD, and Richmond, VA as well as almost every national collision repair event. While WMABA has a rich history of dedicated men and women serving the local collision repair community, WMABA also boasts numerous past and current accomplished Board members who represent our membership at the national level. WMABA offers current and dynamic discussion forums on topics facing collision repairers, technical information and educational seminars, opportunities to network and discuss pressing topics with leaders of the collision repair industry, an arbitration program that works with consumers to help resolve issues they might have, apprenticeship programs, legislative representation and the ability to receive and contribute to one of the nation’s leading collision repair magazines, Hammer & Dolly.
