OUT OF BODY (AND MECHANICAL) EXPERIENCES

The Sound of Money by THOMAS GRECO, PUBLISHER

I was at work when the alert came across my phone. Eddie Money, a rock singer who had a bunch of hits in the ’70s and ’80s, passed away. It seems I get a lot of alerts lately that someone famous from my past has died. I guess it’s a sign of getting old. Having been a huge music fan all my life (and also having published a music magazine for almost a decade), I pretty often have a story or two about these celebrities who either had an effect on me or (more often) just brought a little joy to my life through their records. Eddie Money fits into that category. I remember when I first heard of him. I would go to the record store (remember those?) at least once a week. One particular week, I saw this cool-looking, long-haired guy on an album cover called Eddie Money. Back in the day, when we didn’t have iTunes, Amazon or Spotify to sample music, something as simple as a cool-looking album cover could

convince you to splurge on the $7.99 when searching for something new. Turns out the music was good as the album cover. There were two huge hits on that album – his first – called “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” These are songs that even now, over 40 years later, still turn up regularly on most rock playlists. In the ’70s, when you couldn’t download your favorite songs separately, you were lucky to get two good songs on one album, So, I became an Eddie Money fan. Unfortunately, that became a trend for Eddie. His albums would have maybe one or two good songs, and the rest would be filler. But that didn’t prevent me from purchasing tickets to see him live in Central Park in 1979. Truth be told, I was actually more excited to see the opening band, the Babys (“Isn’t It Time,” “Back On My Feet Again”...Anyone???). But I still wanted to see Eddie, the former NYPD member who made it as a rock and roll star.

After the Babys played a disappointing, listless set (from where we sat, we could see the lead singer, John “Missing You” Waite, sneak off to smoke a joint during the guitar solos), we were ready for the Money Man. I hate to say it, but within two or three minutes of the first song, we knew that as good as Eddie sounded on record, it didn’t translate to his live performance. Honestly, he was the most uncoordinated person I have ever seen on stage. Don’t get me wrong; he sounded pretty good. But every time he took one of his “trademark” spins, he had the grace of the Incredible Hulk. Ironically, about halfway through the set, one of the overly excited fans on the floor decided to make like Spiderman and climb up the scaffolding on the side of the stage. The crowd started going wild, hooting and hollering and rooting the guy on to make it to the top. Problem was, from where Eddie Money was singing, he couldn’t see the guy or what he was doing. Eddie thought the insanity from the crowd was in response to his performance. He started thanking the crowd every other minute. As the climber got higher, so did the crowd. Eddie started doing more and more of his “trademark” spins, thinking that he was driving the crowd wild. I swear he almost fell off the stage from the dizziness.

All those of us in the stands could do was laugh. Here was this guy, singing his heart out for his hometown under the illusion that he was playing the show of his life, when we were all actually screaming for the climber to make it to the top. Eddie soon closed the show, and we went off into the night with one of the most bizarre concert memories of our lives. I remember reading interviews with Eddie a couple of days after the show, and he repeated how he couldn’t believe the response he received from the Central Park crowd. He probably never learned the truth. Fast-forward to a few years later. A girlfriend of mine had secured tickets to the hottest new act in music, Cyndi Lauper. She was playing a holiday concert in New York, and I got the tickets as a surprise the day of the show. A friend and I made our way to the theater, and were pleasantly surprised that Cyndi came on early and played a great show. As she was leaving the stage, Cyndi told us all to enjoy the next act, Eddie Money! I was excited! I didn’t know Eddie was on the bill! And I had never seen him before! No, you didn’t read that wrong. Maybe it was the effect of the secondhand smoke at the concert in Central Park, or continued on pg 52

Robots on Repeat PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As anyone who has attended an AASP/NJ event or other industry gathering knows, nobody in attendance is allowed to discuss rates or set prices. Breaking this rule will result in the immediate disbanding of the meeting. We are held to strong antitrust guidelines that carry criminal penalties if they are broken, but it never ceases to amaze me how common and familiar the excuses various insurers use to keep from paying us seem to be. It’s almost as if they got together and figured out a way to keep their costs low at our expense! Every day, insurers walk in and tell us they will only pay what is “usual and customary” for the market. They look me in the eyes with a straight face and say, “This is the prevailing rate.” When I

by JERRY MCNEE

push back, the appraisers tell me they can only do what they’re told or that they have a shop that will do certain work for less money or even for free. This happens with virtually every company that comes in here. I suspect it does at your shop as well – and it doesn’t matter if we’re OEM-certified or not. It doesn’t take a genius to see that this is a symptom of practices occurring throughout the insurance industry – and something that the auto body industry could never get away with doing. An insurance estimator’s job isn’t to determine which shop is the cheapest; their job is to work to indemnify the customer. Many of them have practically become robots with what they tell shops. It’s like they’re pulling their words out of a time capsule. How

long are their excuses going to last? When they’re asked to name the shop in the area that will “do it for less,” they don’t have an answer. The bottom line is that a DRP shop shouldn’t have any bearing on a non-DRP shop when it comes to rates. Right now, the most accurate and realistic way for shops to get an idea of what true market rates look like is to take the Variable Rate System (VRS) Standardized Labor Rate Survey through National AutoBody Research (laborratesurvey.com). That’s a good way to see real-world figures and not what somebody has been ordered to tell you. The educated shops – and the ones that participate in the survey – know better. NJA

Why Belong to and Support AASP/NJ?

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

by CHARLES BRYANT

One of the most frustrating questions I hear in regard to AASP/NJ membership is, “What can the association do for me?” Well, first of all, what you get out of anything is directly proportional to what you put into it. However, although the question is frustrating to me because of how hard AASP/NJ works every day to make the industry better, I have decided to do my best to provide an overview for prospective members of what AASP/NJ is all about and what becoming a member can do for them. First, AASP/NJ has a Members Only section on its website (aaspnj.org) loaded with beneficial documents and information. Interested parties must join AASP/NJ in order to see and use this information. There are so many other valuable benefits provided to the members of AASP/NJ. The following is just a few: Being a member and participating in AASP/NJ provides you with the opportunity to help establish industry positions on issues being considered by the Government and Legislature before they become requirements. AASP/NJ is often called upon to speak for the industry as a whole. By becoming a member and participating, you will ensure that your opinions become part of that response. As a member of AASP/NJ, you have a voice in your industry – similar to the voice you have in your community through your vote and civic activities. Membership and participation in AASP/NJ gives your company a level of professionalism that enables consumers to perceive you as more conscientious and professional business owners. The official AASP/NJ publication, New Jersey Automotive, features updates on the industry and different members’ businesses on a regular basis. AASP/NJ also keeps you informed on industry issues with its monthly members-only newsletter. Membership includes access to the full-time AASP/NJ Hot Line service to answer your industry and insurance claim questions. AASP/NJ monitors and speaks up for and against legislation on your behalf and safeguards your interests in Trenton, the industry’s corridor of power when needed.

AASP/NJ can achieve success in the governmental or regulatory sphere where a single owner cannot – generally due to that owner’s lack of funds – through the association’s collective expertise. AASP/NJ offers continuing education and training programs at locations within a reasonable distance. Your business and its website is listed and linked to the association’s website for free. You gain valuable contacts and can exchange ideas and share experiences with peers. You gain ideas and information by attending AASP/NJ meetings. AASP/NJ provides information to enhance your business. AASP/NJ provides you with a strong, effective voice in support of the automotive industry’s interests. continued on pg 39

MECHANICAL CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Obamacare: My Firsthand Experience by KEITH KREHEL

Health insurance is not exactly interesting (at least not to me). But as an employer, it is something I have to deal with and provide. I know three people who benefited from Obamacare legislation, and I would like to present their “stories.” I know all of these people and have interacted with them at one level or another over the years. I will try to be as neutral as I can be and will try not to “spin” the saga. Case 1 This person worked for many years in the sale of building products. He made a living and did okay, but he never saved a dime. After many years in sales, he decided to go into business as an owner, so he partnered up and

22 | New Jersey Automotive | October 2019

gave it a go. Not a good idea. His skillset in sales (he was personable) did not help him run a business, and things went bad quickly. In under two years, the company was out of business, leaving substantial debt to his creditors. At this time, he was out of work and was allowed to collect unemployment for a long time – not because he could not get a job, but because unemployment paid pretty well compared to his job offers. He felt that since he had made good money for years, he should not have to work for less. He bled unemployment dry (I believe through the initial period and then through two extensions). Eventually, he had to do the unthinkable – get a job for what a company was willing to pay him. All the while, he had stopped paying his mortgage, and his house went into foreclosure. For a person with reduced income, he still lived as before – taking vacations, going out to dinner often and even paying for his daughter’s biweekly manicures. He had also allowed his medical insurance to lapse. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with cancer a year or so later. Obamacare did help this fellow out after years of not making any effort to help himself. He racked up bills from the several operations he required, but he did not have to pay for them – the taxpayers did. Case 2 This fellow had a pretty good business going for himself. He also had a great wife and two young children. He then descended into alcohol and drugs. Every effort was made to “save” this

fellow through conversations with many sources, including myself. Instead, he went on to be an absentee father to his two children and also fathered several other children out of wedlock. Child support for any of his children was a joke. Rehab was attempted several times, but it was for the wrong reason. The judges would go easy on him with each altercation if he agreed to rehabilitation instead of prison. His medical bills from his frequent hospital stays (due to his abuse of drugs and alcohol) were easily over a couple million dollars. It did not matter to him, because was not paying a dime – the taxpayers were. This fellow made no effort to help himself. I sure don’t wish poor health on anyone, but both of these financial situations were “self-inflicted” by many poor choices made over many years. Case 3 Obamacare allows the “children” on family plans to stay on company health insurance until they reach 26. Honestly, I personally think this is ridiculous. The adult “child” of an employee at a friend’s business is still under his company’s plan at my friend’s expense – despite graduating high school and college, moving out of state, living on her own and working a fulltime job. Anyone with common sense has to realize the longer adult children stay on a plan, the more expensive that plan will be – at least for those paying. If anyone can interject the word “fair” into any of the above cases, feel free to contact me. NJA

NABC Recycled Rides Program Continues to Change Lives

Military veterans and their family members joined NABC reps and other principal donors to pose with the Recycled Rides vehicles.

It was a day filled with smiles, cheers and happy tears as four New Jersey military veterans and their families were presented with restored vehicles through the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycled Rides program during the organization’s recent Northeast Golf Outing at the Mountain View Golf Course in Ewing. Since the program began in 2007, NABC has donated 2,180 vehicles to veterans nationwide. “[These recipients] continue to fight, educate themselves and start new

businesses to be able to do the things that we all take for granted,” said NABC Recycled Rides Program Manager Linda Sulkala. “They keep on persevering, and it is for this reason that [we] are here today: To recognize that they have never given up. They have never given up on their service to their country, and we have never given up being able to give back to them.” To symbolize the teamwork involved in Recycled Rides, Sulkala had all those involved in the donation and restoration process come up to formally present the keys to each recipient. “I want to thank everybody who contributes to [NABC] and helps out, because you guys do change and save lives. I see it firsthand,” commented Mike Boll, president of NJ Veterans Network. The four recipients – Nijah Crawford (nominated by Mark Miller, financial advisor at Joint Base McGuire-DixLakehurst), Shafali Masih, Frank Gadson and Josh Kimmel (all

nominated by NJ Veterans Network) – received vehicles donated by GEICO and restored by ABRA-Caliber Collision of Pennington, Son’s Prestige Collision of Garwood and Auto Pro Collision of Staten Island, NY, with parts and materials donated by various vendors. In addition, each of the four recipients received a 50-inch HD television donated by FindPigtails and gas money from the Hertz Corporation. NJA

WMABA’s Collision P.R.E.P. to Return to NORTHEAST As a regional association with strong national ties, the Washington Metropolitan Auto Body Association (WMABA) is committed to bringing the news, information and insight it gains across the nation directly to its membership back home. One major way the association has achieved this for the past two years has been through its partnership with the Alliance of Automotive Service Providers of New Jersey (AASP/NJ) in presenting the Collision Professional Educational Program (Collision P.R.E.P.) at the NORTHEAST® Automotive Services Show. WMABA is pleased to announce that it will again present Collision P.R.E.P. at next year’s NORTHEAST, scheduled for March 20-22 at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ.

LOCAL NEWS “Every year, WMABA aims to bring the most relevant and timely education available to the NORTHEAST show for all participants coming from near and far,” comments WMABA Executive Director Jordan Hendler. “We want to cover a variety of subjects that pertain to each key employee type in the repair shop – from front office to technician to owner. Not only is NORTHEAST the premier education event for the entire East Coast as far as learning a lot in a short time, but it is also a great place to make new industry acquaintances who can strengthen your peer group. It’s important to revitalize your mind with the latest in technologies, processes and how to maintain that culture throughout the year.” Past highlights of Collision P.R.E.P. include the national debut of Mike Anderson’s (Collision Advice) course on scanning, an extensive OEM Panel, General Motors’ first public presentation on its national shop certification program and an unforgettable talk by

WHY

Texas-based attorney Todd Tracy. With the industry in a state of constant change, Hendler sees NORTHEAST as a chance for repairers, owners and other stakeholders to stay ahead of trends before they directly impact their business lives. “A lot of previous years’ Collision P.R.E.P. attendees have raved about classes on processes and repair procedures as well as the OEM Panel for understanding the current and future dynamics in the world of certified repair. We want to keep that and expand into some more current areas, such as key new equipment, in-house scanning, educating consumers and more.” In addition to providing nationallevel speakers and educational opportunities to WMABA members within driving distance, Hendler is thrilled to again collaborate with AASP/NJ in making Collision P.R.E.P. possible. “We are better together in this endeavor. Teaming up is of greater

The District is currently looking for body shops, automotive dealerships and other automotive industry facilities that would like to be involved with this on-the-job training. The program has been made possible through a grant from the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development for the District to use for “pre-apprenticeship career exploration” programs for automotive (this fall) and construction (in the spring of 2020). “There has been a big push from the Department of Labor for apprenticeships and pre-apprenticeships in the last two to three years,” explains HCVSD Grant Coordinator Dan Larkins. “This is part of that wave of new funding. AASP/NJ Members Learn the Ins and Outs of ADAS

In an effort to educate repairers on advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), AASP/NJ recently brought together industry representatives for a special panel discussion at Gran Centurions in Clark. Moderated by AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee, the USI North America-sponsored panel featured Mark Olson (VECO Experts), George Lesniak and Michael Flink (Autel), Paul Stern (LIFTNOW) and Chuck Leonard (Autopart International, Inc.) First and foremost, the panelists stressed that ADAS calibration is not something that can be ignored. “As a repairer, you are supposed to know that you have to do the calibration,” commented Olson, who used the multimillion-dollar lawsuit against John Eagle Collision Center in Texas as an example of its importance. “You have to do the research...When you touch a car, you are responsible for

AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee

everything, whether you know it or not. You can’t say, ‘I didn’t know,’ because ignorance is not self-defense.” Lesniak gave multiple examples of the steps needed to accurately reset cameras and sensors, which OEMs put in place for a reason. If the proper steps - which can involve such specific requirements as level surfaces, a full fuel tank and accurate tire pressure aren’t taken, these sensors may not be set back to their accurate zero-point calibration. “If we touch it, move it and take something off and put it back, it needs to be calibrated. I know people say, ‘Well, I never had a problem before.’ Well, how do you know? And what if?” he said. “Take the time to do it, and do it correctly,” added Flink. Olson urged attendees to keep track of all the steps involved in a repair and create what he calls a “bulletproof file.” “If you don’t document yourself – even if you are not wrong – you are going to lose.” Even performing wheel alignments requires calibration due to ADAS

technology. “[These systems] rely on knowing exactly where ‘straight ahead’ is. When you are going 80 miles an hour, it will make a big difference,” said Stern. Another challenge body shops have had to contend with is the pushback from insurance companies that don’t want to pay for pre- and post-repair scanning. The panelists advised shops to educate these carriers on what is necessary, using facts and figures to support their position. “If you don’t ask for it, you won’t get anything. You have to know what to ask for,” advised Flink. “If you charge correctly for it, you should be able to get paid for it,” added McNee. Leonard raised the idea of ADAS as a possible revenue source for shops that commit to implementing the proper equipment and training. “It is a big investment to get into ADAS, but don’t lose sight of what your return on investment is and in covering yourself.” For more information on AASP/NJ and to learn about upcoming events, please visit aaspnj.org. “I’ve never seen the industry as bad as it is right now. Every time I hang up the phone at the AASP/NJ Hot Line, it rings again.”

AASP/NJ Executive Director Charles Bryant says the above words during one of the most active times in the association’s history. With the state – and national – collision repair industry facing more obstacles from outside parties than ever before, the call to fight back against insurer practices is deafening. Frustrated by the apparent lack of action from their respective Departments of Insurance, a growing number of shops across the country are now battling their industryrelated issues through the legal process. With New Jersey no exception, AASP/NJ has established a Legal Defense Fund to assist shops and other entities in remaining financially stable while taking on major adversaries in court. The Legal Defense Fund was created exclusively for AASP/NJ members in good standing and is offered at the discretion of the association’s Board of Directors for legal proceedings that stand to result in a favorable industry or will in some way positively affect or advance the industry. Financial assistance goes towards expenses, including (but not limited to) legal fees, reports, transcripts and costs resulting from the legal process. AASP/NJ is encouraging one-time or monthly contributions from members to support the endeavor. “The Fund is there to support the ones who are going into battle, so to speak, and standing up for what is right,” explains AASP/NJ President Jerry McNee. “It’s not just for the purpose of the individual; it’s for the industry as a whole. Unless one is willing to get up and step to the frontlines and take the expense on full force, [contributing to the Fund] is another way; they can sit back, be anonymous and help support the guys who truly need it.” “With the state of the industry right now, everybody should be donating towards this – and not just waiting until it comes time for membership renewal,” urges Bryant, who adds that pursuing the traditional route of filing complaints with the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance is no longer a valid and useful option. “It’s very rare that the Department helps somebody. You put a complaint in, and then you get a generic letter back stating that it investigated [the complaint] and the insurance company is in compliance. This happens over and over again. The only way that people are going to get an answer to these things is to go to court.” The need for a Legal Defense Fund is driven largely by the fact that several insurers are not compensating repair facilities to perform proper

COVER STORY procedures and follow OEM-recommended/required repair methods. Additionally, constant debates over the Labor Rate cause continued frustration on the shop floor. With respect to the latter, Bryant is confident that rate-related suits will prevail in the legal arena. “When you go in and show that it’s $65 to fix a bicycle and $85 to fix a lawnmower and we’re working on a $30,000 car for $48 an hour, you can’t lose that case.” Despite the industry’s increasingly strong chances of scoring victories in front of a judge, it remains a common and frustrating reality that plaintiffs in several large cases have been subject to gag orders over the years. If the results of such lawsuits never reach the public, then how are other industry members able to learn from and use the benefits of these cases in their day-to-day business? McNee insists that the positive results of these cases do hit the industry through the Variable Rate System (VRS) Standardized Labor Rate Survey via National AutoBody Research (laborratesurvey.com). If a repair facility wins a lawsuit and the market sees a price increase as a result, it could potentially turn up in the Variable Rate System if not in industry headlines. “We know it’s difficult to fight an insurance company,” McNee says. “Every time an insurer says no, somebody else goes away. But there are people around the country who are taking their matters to court or arbitration and are absolutely winning. Systems like the VRS give us the opportunity to share that information. If we sat back and did nothing, what do we expect from the end results? Are we going to just sit back and allow it to continue? We have to be willing to go out on a limb.” Nobody ever wants to end up in court, but AASP/NJ is committed to helping those who see this as their only option. In McNee’s mind, it’s up to everyone to do what they can to provide support to anyone determined to go through the process for the benefit of an industry in dire need of change. “We have to start somewhere. We in AASP/NJ are the leaders in New Jersey. Let’s lead by example. Are people going to donate to the Legal Defense Fund? I can’t tell them yes or no, but it can’t be on the backs of a small number of people to improve things. I’m willing to help, but they have to be willing to help, too. Think of your future; can you imagine the changes we can achieve if everyone in the industry spent one hour a week trying to improve this industry?!” To learn more about AASP/NJ’s Legal Defense Fund or to see if you quality for assistance, contact AASP/NJ Executive Director Charles Bryant at (732) 922-8909 or email setlit4u@msn.com. INDUSTRY ADVICE

ASK MIKE

Is the Industry up to Speed on ADAS Procedures? Do you have a question for Mike? Contact New Jersey Automotive Editorial Director Joel Gausten at joel@grecopublishing.com or (973) 600-9288, and we’ll ask him in a future issue.

This month, we “ASK MIKE” to share some of his thoughts on whether collision repair facilities are properly researching and utilizing OEM repair procedures for advanced driverassistance systems (ADAS). We at New Jersey Automotive hope you find this following exchange useful, and we encourage you to reach out to us if you have a question for Mike on this or any industry-related matter that he can answer in a subsequent issue.

New Jersey Automotive: Based on your “Who Pays for What?” surveys through Collision Advice (collisionadvice.com) and what you’re seeing in person at shops across the country, where do you see the industry in terms of readiness for ADAS? Are they performing those repairs? Are they looking up the right information for these procedures?

Mike Anderson: ‘ADAS’ is a pretty broad subject. A lot of things fall into that category: Parking sensors, blind-spot monitors, adaptive cruise control, camera in the mirrors – all kinds of things. I think what we have to understand is that every vehicle needs to be judged on its own merits, and every vehicle needs to be researched via that specific vehicle’s VIN and build data. Also, it seems that a lot of shops are subletting these processes to dealerships or mobile vendors. It’s important that those shops still research those procedures even when they sublet them out. They should print them out, bring them to the dealership and say, ‘I need to make sure you do this procedure right here.’ As a good rule of thumb, whenever you’re going to do a repair in the vicinity of one of these ADAS components, you need to research to make sure you know of any repair or refinish limitations on that area. For example, Volkswagen says that if a bumper cover is damaged within the specific dimension of a specific area, you can’t do a repair or use filler. With a Chevy Equinox, you can’t paint a parking sensor. Even if it’s just nicked, you need to make sure you replace it. It’s also important to learn and understand the key research terms within the OEM repair procedures in order to find the right information that ensures a safe and proper repair. Words like ‘calibrate,’ ‘calibration,’ ‘recalibrate,’ ‘initialize,’ ‘initialization,’ ‘reinitialize,’ ‘relearn’ – those are good ones to look up.

38 | New Jersey Automotive | October 2019

Mike Anderson is an Accredited Automotive Manager (AAM) and the former owner of Wagonwork Collision Centers, two highly acclaimed shops located in Alexandria, VA. He has served as a member of many industry organizations throughout his career, including the WMABA Board of Directors, the Mitchell Advisory Board, the MOTOR Advisory Board, the ASE Test Review Committee, the National Auto Body Council, the Collision Industry Conference and the Society of Collision Repair Specialists. Additionally, he is a past Virginia SkillsUSA chairman, serves as a facilitator for Axalta Coating Systems’ highly recognized Business Council 20 Groups in both the US and Canada and facilitates numerous courses for Axalta Coating Systems’ Educational Series. He currently offers expert industry consulting via his latest venture, Collision Advice (collisionadvice.com).

I see shops not researching the procedures required when they disconnect the battery. I’ve seen some vehicles with seven pages of procedures for disconnecting that battery. As we see more and more of these systems introduced into the collision repair environment, it makes it all the more critical that we research the OEM repair procedures. When a new vehicle comes out, most if not all of the OEM websites have a ‘new car features’ section for it. This is sometimes referred to as ‘NCF.’ I think it behooves us to go into that section and read about the new features that are on that vehicle so we understand what those systems are called. For example, a Nissan Infiniti might say ‘intelligent cruise control,’ but Toyota calls it ‘adaptive cruise control.’ Knowing the specific names of these systems will lead us to know what keywords to use in our search terms in the OEM repair procedures.

NJA: Let’s talk about a more controversial topic. We both know that a lot of insurers are reluctant to pay for something as basic as pre- and post-repair scanning. Looking at greater ADAS procedures, what have your surveys revealed as far as how successful shops have been in receiving compensation for this high level of work?

MA: Honestly, I don’t think compensation is the issue; I think the issue is that shops aren’t even researching or asking for it. Again, keep in mind we are talking about calibrations and such – not scanning. I don’t want to disrespect anybody, but there is a lack of knowledge and awareness on the collision repair side. I do estimating classes for several OEMs, and we have shops bring samples of their estimates in with them. I’ll ask, ‘Okay, how many of you have this on the estimate?’ A lot of people won’t have the operation itemized. Before we can get approval for reimbursement from an insurance company, we need to make sure we’re knowledgeable ourselves. I say this with love, but oftentimes we use the insurance companies as an excuse for our ignorance or lack of knowledge. Shops say insurers won’t pay for it, but that’s an easy copout when the reality is that they don’t even know enough to ask for it.

SCRS’ Repairer Driven Education Series to Celebrate 10th Year at SEMA NATIONAL NEWS By Alana Bonillo

In just a few weeks, automotive professionals from all over the world will make their way to the Las Vegas Convention Center for the 2019 SEMA Show. The Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS) promises to deliver a hefty slate of offerings that will mark the 10th consecutive year of its popular Repairer Driven Education (RDE) series (set this year for November 4 to November 8). “We really try hard to make sure that we find new folks, new voices and new perspectives to bring into the room,” says SCRS Executive Director Aaron Schulenburg. “In addition to our tenured speakers, who are subject matter experts everyone looks forward to hearing from, having new voices is something that keeps it interesting and engaging, especially for those who come back year after year.” Kicking things off on November 4 will be Paul Webb and Elle Artison of WebbVT, who will present a special keynote presentation, “Advanced Business Communications – The A-B-Cs of Building Trust.” They will introduce attendees to a way of communicating that is all about building trust and teaching people how to buy as opposed to selling people things. “Our talk on communications is going to address how to work better with building trust with your staff; in doing so, you will lower your overhead. The second key ingredient is matching co-worker strengths with job responsibilities to reduce employee turnover, which also

42 | New Jersey Automotive | October 2019

reduces overhead,” explains Webb. Attendees won’t want to miss “Be Your Own Berkshire” on November 5. Scott Broaddus, a financial planner from Virginia who is new to the RDE slate, will address such things as calculating internal and external ROI, investment opportunities and what to do with money earned. Veteran SEMA presenter Shawn Collins of 3M returns to RDE for “Unraveling the Mystery of Structural Bonding Adhesives” on November 6. He will set out to alleviate the industry’s confusion surrounding the use of structural and/or non-structural adhesives. Among the main messages he plans to stress is the importance of following OEM procedures. Using video footage of the actual repair of a Honda B pillar, Collins will demonstrate the necessary means of following manufacturer-recommended guidelines. While most OEMs provide some general information, specifics need to come from the adhesive manufacturer. “Everyone is looking for that silver bullet or one-stop matrix to find all the information, but that doesn’t exist,” Collins observes. “You have to dig into each vehicles’ procedure for the modelspecific information.” Industry members won’t want to miss the OEM Collision Repair Technology Summit on November 7, which will put SEMA show attendees in a room with innovators in automotive structural design and technology. “The Summit’s three sessions will

feature distinctly different topics that host discussion between companies and individuals that highlight developments in both the industry and modern vehicles, with a focus on emerging trends that influence vehicle repairability and collision industry preparation,” offers Schulenburg. The RDE series concludes on November 8 with the much-anticipated second installment of the IDEAS Collide showcase. The popular event, which debuted in 2018, returns with a new slate of 10 speakers who are expected to wow audiences with new ideas and solutions within their individual 10-minute TED Talkstyle time slots. IDEAS Collide Showcase speakers include Ryan Taylor (CEO of Body Shop Booster, Inc.); Tim Ronak (senior services consultant for AkzoNobel); Mario Dimovski (CEO of Tradiebot Industries); Elle Artison (CEO of Paul Webb Training); Kyle Holt (president of S/P2); Fred Iantorno (vice president of loT [Internet of Things] for VeriFacts Automotive); Wayne Mitchell (global director automotive solutions for Stericycle Expert Solutions); Judy Folk (collision repair design service for Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes); Doug Kelly (CEO of asTech ); and John Goglia (independent aviation safety consultant and adjunct professor at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology). AASP/NJ MEMBER PROFILE By Alana Bonillo

Chris Lordi Auto Body Chris Lordi Auto Body shop has been thriving for 30 years and counting by following the belief that quality work comes above all else. The founder of the Passaic-based shop has been involved with automobiles since he was just 12 years old. A neighbor got him started working on cars, and he spent the next decade working at that neighbor’s shop. By the time he was 22, he was ready to open his own business. He started out with a two-car shop and later purchased an 8,000-square-foot building on Howe Street, where he’s been ever since. “We are not a volume shop; we have always stuck to quality over quantity.” The shop works on all makes and models, specializing in higher-end vehicles such as Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW. All members of the shop’s six-person staff boast more than 20 years’ experience, bringing expertise ranging from heavy collision to painting to the facility. Looking back, Lordi knew that learning a trade at a young age was a good thing for his future. He became quite skilled at painting, and he ran with it. Once he had his own shop, he hired others to take on the other work involved.

44 | New Jersey Automotive | October 2019

“As the industry evolved, so did my business.” Word of mouth – not DRPs – has been the key to the facility’s success. “A steady, slow growth is what a business really needs. Sometimes, changes happen so fast that you are forced to comply with the regulations. But at end of the day, decisions on repairing the car are up to us – we are the experts. We try to work within the parameters of the insurance industry, but what is right for the customers and the vehicle is what is most important to us. We understand that our customers – not the insurance companies or the insurance industry – are our lifeline. It’s the way we do things, and our customers come first.” Lordi makes sure he and the crew stay on top of what happens next in the collision field; as such, all crew members are factory-trained. The shop is in the process of obtaining various OEM certifications. He also knows the importance of talking and interacting with others, which is why his shop recently rejoined AASP/NJ. “[Executive Director] Charlie Bryant is great for the industry. The association really cares about its members, and I look forward to the future. I think

Shop owner and AASP/NJ member Chris Lordi has been in business for 30 years. [AASP/NJ] really looks out for the industry as a whole.” Growing with the times, Lordi says he takes full advantage of social media in helping to drive business. The shop has a five-star rating on Google and a strong presence on Instagram and Facebook. “Customer reviews are so important in this day and age. I’m getting more people through the door because of online [marketing]. They know your shop before they even get there. It’s important to keep your ratings high and make sure to take care of your customers, because eventually the customer will be the one to take care of you.” Looking ahead, Lordi’s goals are to maintain high standards of quality and prepare for what the industry will bring next. “If you are in business to make money [as] your first priority, I think everything falls apart. If you take care of ‘one, two and three’ – your quality of work, your customers and your employees, the end of result will be success. Money comes after you take care of those things.” NJA

ARANJ

The Automotive Recyclers Association of New Jersey

President’s Message

Auto Recyclers Save Lives

By Rodney Krawczyk (with Paul D’Adamo) Since 2015, auto recyclers in the US and Canada have participated in the recovery of defective Takata airbags. The Takata airbag recall is the largest and most complex safety recall in history. Vehicles made by 19 different automakers have been recalled to replace the frontal airbags installed in vehicles from model year 2002 through 2015. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports there have been at least 24 confirmed deaths and 300 injuries related to ruptures of the driver’s front airbag inflators supplied by Takata. To date, over 500,000 recalled airbags have been recovered by over 2,000 auto recyclers across the US and Canada. While new vehicle automotive dealers engage with customers to replace the defective inflators, the Salvage and Recycling Endof-Life Airbag Recovery Program ensures that inflators are removed from vehicles in auto recycling facilities that might be sold as replacement parts. Rebuilders Automotive Supply (RAS) in Coventry, RI is the primary contractor for the Salvage and Recycling End-of-Life Airbag Recovery Program in the US and Canada. Utilizing desktop and mobile software, recyclers can quickly identify defective airbags for removal and shipping. Recalled Takata airbags from auto recyclers are ultimately destroyed to prevent further harm. Google search #yankthatbag for additional information. ARANJ encourages all auto recyclers to participate in this program to ensure the safety of all parts being used in the repair process. NJA

Wharton Insurance Briefs

Dealer plate usage has been an ongoing issue for many years. Although there are different interpretations of the law (and many clients have both won and lost court cases), several insurance issues should be reviewed. In general, dealer plates should be used by dealers to allow their prospective customers to test drive a vehicle (for sale) or to transport a vehicle from one location to another (i.e., an auction to a dealer lot/yard or a dealer lot to a buyer’s home). Dealer plates should only be used on the vehicles for which you hold the ownership/title. Dealer plates should not be given or lent to siblings, friends or relatives for their use. Insurance carriers consider this “improper use” and have declined to provide coverage after an accident. You should review your insurance program with your agent to determine the scope of your coverage and any limitations, such as driver age. Many programs limit drivers to a minimum age of 21 and owners’ children to age 19. Younger drivers may not be covered by your insurance program. Please call me if you have any questions regarding this coverage in your insurance program. NJA

maybe the performance was so bad I had wiped it from my memory. But honest to God, I had totally forgotten I had seen Eddie Money before. About 30 seconds into “Baby Hold On,” there was that “trademark” spin, and the nightmare came flushing back to my brain. I turned to my friend and said, “Let’s get out of here. I cannot watch this guy AGAIN.”

So, that’s my Eddie Money story. As I sit here writing this, I have all those great songs playing on my Alexa. “Baby Hold On,” Take Me Home Tonight,” Shakin,’” “Think I’m in Love,” Two Tickets to Paradise” and, of course, “I Wanna Go Back,” while I’m sure Eddie is cashing that ticket to paradise and doing that “trademark” spin. Making lots of people smile. NJA
