East Mississippi Community College will kick off their 2012 tle defense as the No. 1 team in the na on, according to the NJCAA Preseason Top 20 football poll. The defending na onal champions are followed by No.2 Butler Community College (Kan.), No. 3 Arizona Western College, No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and No. 5 Blinn College (Texas). Fresh off their first na onal championship, the top‐ranked East Mississippi Lions return sophomore running back Rodriguez Moore (right) who ranked fourth in the na on last season in rushing with 1,303 yards. The Lions offense witnessed the departure of 2011 NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year Bo Wallace at quarterback, but landed two key transfers in Clemson running back Mike Bellamy and Ole Miss wide receiver Nick Brassell. The return of Lauren Jackson and Za’Darius Smith on the defensive line will be enhanced by the addi on of Florida State transfer Darious Cummings. East Mississippi’s defense also features an experienced secondary, boas ng three returning starters. A loss in the 2011 season‐opener set Butler back last season as the Grizzlies went on to win their last 11 games and finished as the No. 2 team in the country. Butler is poised to make a run for a na onal tle in 2012 with the No. 2 ranking and a solid returning cast on both sides of the ball. Entering his 13th season at the helm, Grizzlies head coach Troy Morrell returns six starters including offensive tackles Jesse Ingle and John McClure. James Madison‐transfer Billy Cosh will take over at quarterback for Butler, while sophomore Dreamius Smith returns at running back a er scoring nine touchdowns on the ground in 2011. In one of the most thrilling na onal championship games in NJCAA history, Arizona Western fell 55‐47 to East Mississippi in the El Toro Bowl. The Matadors will miss the na on’s top running back in Damien Williams but return a ton of talent in the trenches. Sophomores Brent Walker and Nathan Bartley anchor Arizona Western’s four returning starters on the offensive line, while the defensive front returns sophomores Randy Gregory and Jeffery Brown who combined for 14.5 sacks in 2011. The Matadors’ fi h‐ranked defense from 2011 also brings back sophomore cornerback Nate Willis who recorded three intercep ons last season. Mississippi Gulf Coast’s only two defeats of 2011 came at the hands of na onal champion East Mississippi. The Gulf Coast Bulldogs are geared up to challenge the Lions in the MACJC in 2012 and hold promising na onal championship aspira ons. Sophomore quarterback Clint Ha en is expected to lead the offense a er taking the reins midway through last season, but will be challenged by LSU ‐signee Jeremy Liggins. Defensively, Gulf Coast returns four starters led by sophomore linebacker Brandon Keel who racked up 80 tackles last season. Rounding out the top five following a disappoin ng finish to their 2011 campaign are the Buccaneers of Blinn. A er jumping out to a 9‐0 start and a No. 1 ranking, the Buccaneers suffered losses to Tyler JC (Texas) in the SWJCFC playoffs and Mississippi Gulf Coast in the Mississippi Bowl. Blinn will look to put last season in the rear‐view mirror with the return of sophomore quarterback Eric Mathews. Throwing for 2,399 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2011, Mathews is arguably the top returning signal‐caller in the na on. With seven returning starters on defense, the Buccaneers are op mis c about their second season under head coach Ronny Feldman. Rounding out the top 10 in the poll are No. 6 Hinds Community College (Miss.), No. 7 Trinity Valley Community College (Texas), No. 8 Iowa Western Community College, No. 9 Snow College (Utah) and No. 10 Hutchinson Community College (Kan.).

2012 NJCAA FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
2012 NJCAA FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
The 2011 NJCAA football season concluded with eight highly‐intriguing bowl games that saw blow outs, upsets and the crowning of a new na onal champion. No. 2 East Mississippi Community College squared‐off against No. 1 Arizona Western College in the El Toro Bowl, which served as the NJCAA Na onal Championship Game. In a shootout that set a new total points record for the tle game, the East Mississippi Lions came out on top 55‐47 to claim the school’s first na onal championship in any sport. First team All‐American quarterback Bo Wallace led the Lions with 452 yards passing and seven touchdowns. Outside of the championship game, three of the most an cipated matchups of the bowl season featured teams out of the SWJCFC (Southwest Junior College Football Conference). In the Mississippi Bowl, No. 5 Blinn College (Texas) suffered a demoralizing 46‐17 loss to No. 9 Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. No. 10 Trinity Valley Community College (Texas) went down as well with a 21‐17 defeat at the hands of No. 3 Butler Community College (Kan.) in the Ci zen’s Bank Bowl. No. 6 Navarro College (Texas) was the lone SWJCFC team to score a victory, taking care of No. 12 New Mexico Military Ins tute 40‐24 in the C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl. In the closest contest of the bowl season, No. 11 Dean College (Mass.) edged out a 26‐25 win over No. 18 Glendale Community College (Ariz.) in the Valley of the Sun Bowl. With less than two minutes remaining, the Bulldogs of Dean scored the go‐ahead touchdown on a pass from sophomore quarterback Jamal Small. Glendale would respond with a drive of their own but missed a 34‐yard field goal to give Dean the victory. Despite the high‐level of comple on, the bowl season did see its fair share of lopsided affairs. No. 14 Hutchinson Community College (Kan.) racked up the most points of any team with a 70‐20 rout of No. 19 Lackawanna College (Pa.) in the Salt City Bowl. The Zions Bank Top of the Mountains bowl was one‐sided as well, with No. 16 Snow College (Utah) domina ng No. 17 Eastern Arizona College 36‐9. The Graphic Edge Bowl once again kicked‐off the bowl season and saw the MFC (Midwest Football Conference) teams sweep the squads from the MCAC (Minnesota College Athle c Conference). Iowa Central Community College defeated No. 15 Central Lakes College‐Brainerd (Minn.) 42‐12 in the opening game, while the feature contest saw No. 8 Iowa Western Community College shutout No. 7 Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) 62‐0.

Sta s cally, Bo Wallace compiled the best season by a quarterback in the history of the NJCAA. Wallace broke three NJCAA single‐season records, while leading the East Mississippi Lions to a perfect 12‐0 record. The freshman set new NJCAA records with 4,604 passing yards, 53 passing touchdowns and 4,810 yards of total offense. Wallace became only the second player in NJCAA history to surpass the 4,000‐yard mark passing and the first freshman to win the offensive award since 2004. In all 12 games this season, Wallace registered over 300 yards of total offense. Wallace also threw for over 400 yards five mes and recorded seven passing touchdowns in four games. At the El Toro Bowl, Wallace put on his best performance of the season to outgun No. 1 Arizona Western College 55‐47 for the na onal championship. Wallace completed 31‐of‐44 passes for 486 yards and seven touchdown passes, the most ever thrown in a NJCAA sanc oned na onal tle game. From Pulaski, Tenn., Wallace transferred to East Mississippi from Arkansas State University. With the hiring of Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss, Wallace decided to reunite with the former‐Arkansas State coach. Going into the fall, Wallace is a strong candidate to run the Rebels offense in 2012.
Caleb Leichtnam’s ball‐hawking skills made him the single biggest defensive threat on the field last season. His defensive efforts anchored Rochester’s Top 10 passing defense and spurred the Yellowjackets on to an 11‐0 record in the regular season and their second‐consecu ve MCAC championship. Leichtnam intercepted 20 passes in 2011, sha ering the previous NJCAA single‐season record of 14. The freshman had mul ple intercep ons in seven games last season, including three contests where he picked off three or more passes. Totaling 422 return yards off his intercep ons, Leichtnam returned two picks for touchdowns in 2011. He also tallied 39 total tackles, including three for a loss. The best effort Leichtnam displayed this season was his four‐intercep on performance in a 12‐2 key conference win over Central Lakes College‐Brainerd (Minn.). That showing earned Leichtnam one of his two Offensive Player of the Week awards in 2011. Leichtnam is the second player from Rochester to receive Player of the Year honors. The first freshman to win the defensive award since 2007, Leichtnam is set to make another run with Rochester this year.

2012 NJCAA FOOTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
2011 ACCFCA COACH OF THE YEAR — BUDDY STEPHENS (EAST MISSISSIPPI) Culmina ng a history‐making season for the Lions of East Mississippi Community College, EMCC head football coach Buddy Stephens was named the 2011 American Community College Football Coaches Associa on Coach of the Year. Stephens, a na ve of Huntsville, Ala., completed his fourth season as EMCC's head football coach by guiding the 2011 Lions to the school's first‐ever NJCAA na onal championship. The Lions' perfect 12‐0 campaign was capped off by their 55‐47 El Toro Bowl victory over previously top‐ranked Arizona Western College in the NJCAA Football Championship Game played Dec. 3 in Yuma, Ariz. This past year, Stephens also guided EMCC to the program's second NJCAA Region 23/Mississippi Associa on of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Championship in the past three seasons. In running the table on the gridiron this season with the na on's top‐rated offensive unit, the EMCC Lions knocked off eight teams that were ranked among the NJCAA Top 20 at some point during the course of the season, including four foes ranked in the Top 5 na onally at the me of their head‐ to‐head mee ngs with the Lions. The program's first‐ever, 12‐win season also included a third perfect 6‐0 mark in MACJC North Division play since 2008 as well as a fourth consecu ve appearance in the MACJC State Playoffs.
