B.S./M.D. Accelerated (7-year) Program with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School In 1989, NJIT became the first undergraduate institution in the state to offer a combined B.S./M.D. program with Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS). The close proximity of NJIT to NJMS has facilitated a special relationship responsible for some amazing achievements, from the most popular artificial knee design to a cadre of outstanding physicians trained through the B.S./M.D. program. It also allows NJIT B.S./M.D. students to forge research collaborations with NJMS faculty while undergraduates. In fact, B.S./M.D. students are eligible each year to participate in the Summer Student Research Program at NJMS, which is generally reserved for first- and second-year medical students.

“After even just one year at the NJIT Honors College through the NJIT/NJMS BS/ MD Program, I can confidently say that coming here has quite honestly been one of the best decisions of my life. There are endless opportunities for me to do everything I desire whether it be to: pursue research, take challenging classes of genuine interest to me, participate in clubs I enjoy while making new friends, or engage in leadership activities that allow me to serve the community of Newark. Coming all the way from Texas, I was unsure what to expect. However, the NJIT Honors College has transformed me into a driven and independent young woman while continuously motivating me to be the best version of myself.!”

- Priya Marella ‘24H

NJMS Class of 2024 “Being next to NJMS provides opportunities to get involved with the school before you even matriculate here; and being in the program, you have the opportunity to do research with the professors. Since NJIT is next to Rutgers-Newark, many students who are biology majors will have classes at both schools, so you have the chance to become familiar with the faculty at NJIT and Rutgers-Newark and do research with them.”

- Adeena Samoni Entering 3rd year at NJMS

“Lessons I learned at NJIT helped me succeed in medical school and my residency. I am eternally grateful to have had access to wonderful academic programs and generous scholarship packages at Albert Dorman Honors College. ... Prospective students seeking a college experience that fosters personal and professional growth should consider the incredible, affordable public universities of New Jersey. Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT is the crown jewel of the system.”

- Biren A. Bhatt, M.D. ’05 Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physician Hackensack University Medical Center

“When I applied to the university, I looked for an experience that would provide me the opportunity to master premedical courses for a successful medical school career — but do so in an environment that cultivated other interests that I could leverage into a future career. As I reflect on my career trajectory, it is clear that NJIT did just that. After a successful medical school career, I practiced clinical medicine for 15 years prior to transitioning to medicine in the corporate sector. … The NJIT experience provided me with strong foundations in community service, interdisciplinary collaboration and the engineering sciences in addition to the traditional medical sciences. That experience has helped me create and excel in a somewhat nontraditional career, but one that has been incredibly rewarding and impactful.” - Paulo Pinho, M.D. ’96 Chief Medical Officer Optimum Reinsurance Company Albert Dorman Honors College Board of Visitors
