Helping victims of Hurricane Sandy and those less fortunate through art

T

he mission of the Banegas Fine Art Studio is to help those less fortunate through art. The studio held a benefit event on Thanksgiving eve, Wednesday, Nov. 21, to support Lunch Break and The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties, two groups who feed the hungry and homeless. A raffle was held for two Banegas paintings, portraits of Benjamin Franklin and Marilyn Monroe, in order to give back to the community. Bolivian-born artist David Banegas believes in art from the heart and giving before getting. At a previous benefit event, his Journey Guitar painting earned $9,000 for The John Hopkins Kimble Cancer Center. The Banegas Fine Art Studio will soon offer a personal studio featuring Moments with Banegas, a warehouse-type space where visitors can watch the artist paint and attend special events. Banegas enjoys painting live and adds that it’s about losing fear. Once an artist loses fear, he or she can just let go. Banegas’ work includes lot of celebrity portraits, including Eva Longoria, Jim Morrison, Andy Warhol, Jerry Garcia, and Paul Newman. Banegas has raised and contributed over $90,000 to these worthy causes: The Tony Guadagno Memorial Scholarship Fund, Best Buddies Foundation, Shuzz Foundation, United for Bolivia Foundation, The Jed Foundation, Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Lunch Break, Zephyr Foundation, Legionaries of Christ, There is No Limit Foundation, Rally for Kids with Cancer Foundation, The John Hopkins Kimble Cancer Center, Baltimore, The Food Bank of Monmouth and Ocean Counties. If your foundation would like art for benefitting your cause, contact us for more information. Visit DavidBanegas.com, check out his Facebook page at David Banegas Studio, call 718-619-7694, or email david@davidbanegas.com.

Consistently charming, beautiful Red Bank

R

ated #3 of the Best Small Towns in America by Smithsonian magazine, Red Bank is both a small town and a regional destination. Situated on the banks of the picturesque Navesink River, Red Bank’s historic business district offers fine dining, trendy shops, funky boutiques, art galleries, quaint pubs, distinctive fashions, waterfront hotels, antique stores, and riverfront parks where boats cruise by. Famous residents living nearby who sometimes stop by for visits include Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, and Jon Stewart. One of the borough’s most notable citizens is William “Count” Basie, a famous musician of the swing and jazz eras, who was born in Red Bank in 1903. Today, the Count Basie Theatre is a wonderful part of Red Bank’s musical heritage, from jazz and blues to rock, comedy, and all sorts of live entertainment shows. Filmmaker Kevin Smith lived in Red Bank while working as an up-and-coming director. His films, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back partly took place in the town, primarily on Broad Street. His store, Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, is located at 35 Broad Street. An early skit on the classic PBS children’s series The Electric Company featured a game show whose winner would be “whisked to beautiful Red Bank, New Jersey” as a prize. Several tunes composed and/or made famous by Red Bank resident Count Basie name the town in their title, including Red Bank Boogie and The Kid from Red Bank. In the essay Memoirs of a Drudge (The New Yorker, October 3, 1942), humorist James Thurber recalls being sent to Red Bank by his newspaper’s city editor on a tip that “Violets (are) growing in the snow over in Red Bank.” Putting in a telephone call to that town’s chief of police in advance, Thurber is told by a desk sergeant, “Ain’t no violence over here,” and nothing more. Several new restaurants opened this year and the much anticipated Char Steakhouse is expected to open at year’s end. Many new retail shops opened this year, including Greene Street, Rumson China & Glass, Femme by Ashley, and Alex & Ani, among others. With its brick sidewalks, Victorian lampposts, and meticulously restored 19th century buildings, Red Bank’s antiquing, architecture, shopping, and nightlife consistently charm the thousands of people who visit every year.
