lack Friday and Cyber Monday get people shopping – but a new post-Thanksgiving weekday is opening hearts and purse strings. “Giving Tuesday,” founded in 2012 by New York City’s 92nd St. YMCA and the United Nations Foundation, was originally a “response to commercialism and consumerism” during the holiday season. Today, it has since turned into an international day of giving. And this year, the nonprofit Count Basie Theatre will use the November 29th occasion as one to fund its sensory-friendly programming and raise money and awareness for POAC Autism Services of Brick. “Reaching all audiences with the highest level of the performing arts is part of our not for profit mission,” said Adam Philipson CEO and President of the historic Count Basie Theatre. “We strive to be inclusive and create barrier-free experiences and these shows will support our guests and families with special needs including autism spectrum disorder.” “Giving Tuesday” at the Basie will kick-off at 6:00am, with a day-long broadcast from 94.3 The Point/WJLK-FM Radio. Listeners will be invited to drop by and give donations in person, or to make donations via theBASIE.org. In addition, the Jersey Shore-based Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation, which uses philanthropy to increase citizen activity and economic development opportunities through the arts, healthcare and education, has generously agreed to match all donations up to $25,000. “The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation is proud to be able to work with a great non-profit partner like the Count Basie Theatre,” said executive director and Basie board member Jeremy Grunin. “The ability to support POAC Autism Services in their mission coupled with further showing the power of the arts through the Basie was too powerful an endeavor to ignore.” The organizations will also use the day-long effort and radio broadcast to raise funds for POAC Autism Services of Brick. Two dollars from every ticket sold on November 29th will be donated to the group, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children and adults with autism achieve their fullest potential by providing quality education, support and recreation at no cost to participants. Earlier this year, the Basie team worked with POAC to train staff in advance of the theatre’s first-ever sensory-friendly mainstage performance. “POAC is so thrilled to be involved with Count Basie Theater’s sensory-friendly programming and their fundraising efforts on Giving Tuesday,” said Simone Tellini, Director of Program Development at POAC. “Children and adults on the autism (ASD) spectrum often have sensory issues that make it difficult to participate in and enjoy community-based activities, especially those involving the arts. These activities are essential, especially for children, and vital to their growth in so many ways. “Last February,” Tellini continued, “the Basie provided a wonderful show that, for many children, was their first experience with live theater. The management and staff went above and beyond to make everyone feel comfortable and accepted. World Subaru shares the love

orld Subaru, located on Shrewsbury Ave in Shrewsbury/Tinton Falls, NJ, has donated thousands of dollars and helped raise funds for various philanthropies; in particular for Childhood Cancer foundations including the Valerie Fund and the Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation. The Valerie Fund is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides care and support for children with cancer and blood disorders. Families turn to The Valerie Fund because of the unique combination of medical care, counseling, and various other support services it provides. The Valerie Fund Children’s Centers comprise the largest network of healthcare facilities for children with cancer and blood disorders in New Jersey, and one of the largest in the nation; hosting over 25,000 patient visits each year. At The Valerie Fund Centers, patients receive far more than treatment for their physical illnesses. Their philosophy is th at to truly heal the children with whose care they are entrusted, they must treat them emotionally, socially, developmentally, as well as medically. On September 25, 2016, World Subaru presented the 3rd Annual 5k Rook Run to benefit the Valerie Fund. Over 3000 runners participated including multiple staff members from World Subaru. This year, the Rook Run raised over $212,000. For this year’s “Share The Love Event”, World Subaru has once again chosen “Arms Wide Open Childhood

Cancer Foundation” for their local charity option. World Subaru will make an additional donation while Subaru of America donates an additional $250; to Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation for each vehicle leased or sold during this holiday season. In the last two years, World Subaru has raised over $100,000 for the foundation and has set a goal to raise over $500,000 to fight childhood cancer by 2021. The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation raises money for alternative therapies and actual treatments for children in desperate need. The statistics surrounding childhood cancer are startling—one in every three hundred and thirty children will be diagnosed with a form of cancer by age twenty, and cancer claims the lives of more children annually than any other dis-

ease such as, asthma, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, and AIDS, all combined. The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation are leaders in the forefront of bringing many alternative therapies into clinic which could prolong the lives of children diagnosed with cancer until a cure is funded. World Subaru General Manager, Joe Wajda, gave his sentiment for the “Share The Love Event” and his reasoning for choosing The Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation for World Subaru’s local charity option. “The Share The Love Event is such a powerful opportunity to make a positive change, not only locally, but also on a national level. I’ve always been amazed at the ability to make an impact on the lives of others, whether on a small personal level like being able to offer a Subaru for an affordable price to another member of my community, or on such a larger scale, like taking part in philanthropy that has the potential to do something as meaningful as making strides towards the treatment of childhood cancer.
