They come to us because we’re different. They don’t come to us to find what you can find in a bridal shop or a department store. eople have many choices throughout their lifetimes. For some, there comes a time when the need to make end of life choices becomes an important focus. Today, choosing hospice care has become a more common option toward the end of a terminal illness. But what should we look for when making that choice? This is where Stein Hospice comes in. When you choose Stein Hospice, you choose a dedicated team of expert, compassionate nurses, home health aides, social workers and chaplains that bring comforting support right to your bedside. By choosing Stein Hospice, you become a part of “The Stein Hospice Advantage”. Our program of care provides you with an immediate response to your request for help. Our nurses are available 24 hours a day, including weekends and holidays, to meet and assess a new patient for admission or to care for a patient or family in crisis that is already on our service. Whether your loved one is at home, in a hospital, nursing or assisted living facility setting, our staff is ready to assist you. We understand how difficult this passage is and that most people would prefer to open their homes and intimate moments to someone they can relate to, someone that will become a friend and a companion for the difficult journey that lies ahead. Stein Hospice has a nurse to patient ratio of 1 nurse to every 10 patients, much lower than the national average. This low ratio results in

attentiveness to our patients beyond the time that other hospices often can give. Your nurse will take the time to listen, to get to know you and will put the needs, wishes, and preferences of your loved one and family into the forefront of your plan of care. We also understand that one care approach does not fit all needs. As the only non-profit Jewish hospice in Central New Jersey, we acknowledge that the observance level of each patient and family will define how we address medical decisions, patient needs and wishes at the end of life. For those who need it, our rabbi/chaplain works closely with the patient/family to ensure that halachic and ethical questions that come up are resolved to the standard of all involved. “The Stein Hospice Advantage” does not stop here. To ensure that our care goes above and beyond the basic hospice care of keeping the patient comfortable and the family emotionally supported, we offer complementary therapies such as massage, harp, pet and yoga for patients and family members. Volunteers offer their time and hearts to our patients by sitting bedside to read aloud or do any number of activities, or to simply offer break time to the primary caregiver. We have volunteers who knit and crochet lap blankets and shawls that become part of our comfort care package for each new patient. We are a Jewish Hospice; we understand the healing powers of chicken soup.

With that, we have created “The Chicken Soup Project”, a community volunteer effort, that ensures our patients and their families receive homemade chicken soup to help warm their souls during this difficult time. Other volunteers deliver many kinds of non-medical support to the patient and family to help wrap them in the loving comfort of our “Stein Hospice Advantage”. Stein Hospice prides itself on the bereavement support we provide for the families of our patients. As long as the family needs support, we are available. Our staff often attends funerals and makes Shiva visits. Our social workers follow up with the bereaved family members by phone, mail and in-person visits. Our bereavement support group meets on the second Tuesday of each month and all are invited to attend. Lastly, our beautiful annual memorial service serves as a testament to loved ones lost during the year. This event allows our staff and families to be together while remembering the wonderful individuals whose memories are now a blessing and whose last journey we had the honor to share with both the patient and their family. “The Stein Hospice Advantage”, simply the best in end of life care and choices. he Wilf Campus provides a beautiful home for older residents at Stein Assisted Living and Wilentz Independent Living buildings. Stein Hospice provides medically and spiritually supportive care for our hospice patients, who live in the community and at facilities. Through Wilf Transport, we help people travel to and from home; so they can attend senior programs in the community! This year, with the initiation of Wilf At Home, we will connect older adults and their families with home, yet another way, by bringing supportive services into the homes of older adults. Karen Alexander, Executive Director of Wilf at Home, the newest agency on the Wilf Campus, is conducting market research, launching broad community outreach, facilitating “listening sessions” with older adults and their families, and surveying professionals and caregivers, to pinpoint and develop new programs to help older adults have greater independence and better quality of life, at home. This market research phase, begun in 2012 is a first, key step in understanding the unmet needs of Jewish elders. The research raises community awareness of the upcoming program and will lead to new ways of delivering services that address the expressed needs of seniors who want to stay in the community; that build on the strengths of the Jewish

Community and its partners. Meetings with identified groups of Jewish elders who are participating in facilitated “listening sessions” are underway. In addition, a one-page survey was created, to provide respondents with a chance to identify the resources they most valued, the challenges they see as most daunting, and to prioritize among 20+ services that might potentially be offered through Wilf at Home. Nearly 150 people have filled out survey forms and five groups have participated in “Listening Sessions”. Survey collection and tabulation is still underway, but some of the program ideas highlighted by participants in the “listening sessions,” include home safety assessments, escorted medical appointments, a community speaker’s bureau highlighting services for Jewish Elders, travel and cultural programs in partnership with local museums, and help with deliveries of food and medicine. NEVER TOO OLD TO BECOME COMPUTER SAVVY

ased upon current resident interest and by request, The Martin and Edith Stein Assisted Living Residence is now offering computer training classes to its residents! They are learning shortcuts, copying and pasting, and Google searches, including searches for phone numbers. Residents can use a touch-screen computer or three other computers (one equipped for Skyping and another for those with vision impairments) in the media room. The entire area has wireless Internet service, which allows family members to bring their own laptops to use along with the residents. Chad Kass, a certified history teacher from Kean University, offered to conduct the classes. Chad had already been teaching computer classes at Westfield Senior Housing since 2003. He has been involved teaching and working with seniors since he was eight. His mother served as a recreation director there and he would assist her with activities for the residents in her workplace. The residents at Stein involved in the computer classes range in age from the mid-80’s to mid-90, and they are very eager to learn. As one resident, Seymour Siegel put it, “I have been losing my skills, and stuff that was so easy before has become

difficult. I was interested in learning what I had lost.” Chad teaches basic computer skills, even showing interested residents how to sign up for Facebook and use it to find their family and friends. Judge Ira Harkavy, another resident, said, “I learned how to clear unwanted files, and I’ve learned how to use different search engines to find information.” The residents have learned how to use Google Maps to locate and view their old homes, and conduct genealogy searches using things like the 1940 Census. Everyone seems to enjoy the classes, and, as expressed by resident Shirley Zinker, who said, “Chad is very nice and tries his very best and is very helpful when he is asked a question.” It is clear that this is a popular program. In their spare time, residents practice what they have learned, which also increases their progress. It is a technological world today and residents at Stein Assisted Living are truly keeping up with the times! But many are afraid of the dentist. “We are health care providers,� said Dr. Feret, a dentist with a practice in Westfield for 37 years. “Our job is to help people. But because of bad experiences and sometimes just because of the sound of our instruments, people get scared. The old joke goes: Only take care of the teeth you want to keep. Once you get your permanent teeth, that’s it. You don’t get any more. “There are a lot of people who believe nothing is wrong with their teeth unless it hurts — a lot and for a long time,� said Alice Brown, practice manager for Dr. Feret. “They think if the pain goes away, so did

the problem. Even if the pain disappears, you need to find out what caused it.� She continues, “The mouth has sometimes been called the gateway to the rest of your body. That means problems found in the mouth could help detect bigger problems elsewhere in your body. � Dr. Feret, who received a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange and his dental degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, has been practicing and living in Westfield since 1973. His goal is to make a dental visit painless and effective — so he can determine the condition of your teeth and you want to come back. “I’ve done very well in my practice and in my life,� Dr. Feret said. “I’ve tried to help people in my practice, but sometimes you need to do more.
