State Theatre presents national tour of 42nd Street

he quintessential backstage musical comedy classic 42nd Street will celebrate a two day engagement at the State Theatre in New Brunswick with a sparkling new production May 13-14. 42nd Street will be directed by co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the team who staged the 2001 Tony Award®-winning Best Revival. 42nd Street is the song and dance fable of Broadway, with an American dream story and some of the greatest songs ever written, including “We’re In The Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” “Dames,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” and, of course, “42nd Street.” With book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren, and lyrics by Al Dubin, 42nd Street is based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley’s 1933 movie and tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical Pretty Lady. When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star. The original production of 42nd Street was produced in 1980 on Broadway by David Merrick and featured direction and dances by Gower Champion. It played on Broadway for 3,486 performances, winning 1981 Tony Awards® for Best Musical and Best Choreography. The Broadway revival, which opened in 2001, played for 1,524 performances and earned two Tony Awards® including Best Revival of a Musical.

Mark Bramble began his theatrical career working for legendary producer David Merrick on many Broadway productions. He directed the 2001 Tony Award ®-winning Best Revival of 42nd Street on Broadway, for which he received a Tony Award® nomination, and has staged productions of the show in London, Sydney, Tokyo, Berlin, Amsterdam, Shanghai, and Vienna. Randy Skinner choreographed the 2001 Tony Award®-winning Best Revival of 42nd Street on Broadway for which he received a Tony Award® nomination. He also received Tony Award ® nominations for his choreography of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas and Ain’t Broadway Grand. The design team includes scenic design by Tony Award®-winner Beowulf Boritt (Act One, The Scottsboro Boys, Annie), costume design by Tony Award® winner Roger Kirk (The King and I, 42nd Street, Jesus Christ Superstar), lighting design by Tony Award®-winner Ken Billington (Chicago, Annie, White Christmas), and sound design by Peter Fitzgerald (Movin’ Out, Will Rogers Follies, 42nd Street). Musical supervision is by Todd Ellison (American in Paris, La Cage Aux Folles, 42nd Street). The national tour will star Matthew J. Taylor as notorious director Julian Marsh, Kaitlin Lawrence as Broadway leading lady Dorothy Brock, and introduces Caitlin Ehlinger as newcomer Peggy Sawyer. 42nd Street comes to the State Theatre for three performances, Friday, May 13, at 8 p.m., and Saturday, May 14, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Here’s a list of things to watch for: 1) Difficulties with bathing, dressing, cooking 2) Mobility issues such as difficulty driving or noticing a lot of “dings” on their car 3) Recent falls or accidents, especially more than one 4) A declining chronic health condition such as dementia or congestive heart failure 5) Loss of friendships or loss of active participation in social activities 6) Signs of forgetfulness, such as moldy food found in the refrigerator or complaints of misplaced items Convincing your parent they need help can be difficult. Generally speaking, adult children of aging parents are the first to spot the need. However, parents often resist the help of their adult children; after all they’re used to telling you what you need to do. Furthermore, convincing your elders to accept help that has a fee attached to it is even a greater challenge. How does a family go about getting their elders to welcome outside help or move to a safer setting? Start with the least invasive type of help first For example, there are fairly essential tasks around the home that frequently become more challenging. Tactfully suggest that several people your loved ones know have hired local service companies to mow lawns, shovel snow, and do small tasks around the house, thus freeing them to do things they really enjoy. Invite them to go with you for lunch at a local assisted living facility to see what it is like. Take small steps to reach toward the bigger goal. Take time to adjust, then introduce the next step Some gentleness and compassion can go a long way toward preserving your parents’ or loved ones’ dignity and getting them to allow you to gradually help them. Ensure that you are mindful of your approach so that you don’t give the appearance of trying to take over. Approach your elders in a casual way and don’t dwell on the losses that come with age; remember, asking for help or needing help may be very difficult for them. When you talk with your elders, deliver the message that you want them to live healthier, be as independent as possible, and have burden-free lives. Try to discuss this with your parent over lunch or at a quiet time in a calm manner, not when you are frustrated with them for not getting the help you feel they need. If there are a number of siblings involved in this process, try to avoid power struggles which will only complicate this process. Try to allow the sibling with the greatest rapport and ability to remain calm to be the messenger for everyone. Karaoke rooms now available at Roosterspin

s you walk down the street in the heart of Westfield on these warmer nights you will hear the sound of live jazz music and the smell of Korean cuisine illuminating from a town favorite: Roosterspin. As you get closer, the smell and ambiance will pull you in to take a closer look. The immediate view of over 7,000 classic vintage LPs line the back wall pairing with a beautiful wine rack filled with various California wines. Their signature dish — the double-fried chicken — balances perfectly with the traditional Korean they have been serving since their opening in 2014. The chicken goes through a double frying process in soybean oil which makes it nothing like ordinary fried chicken. This leaves a light, super crispy, and juicy meat with less grease. They then brush a light glaze of either soy garlic or spicy soy garlic on each piece individually to ensure quality. To top this all off the restaurant has recently opened up private karaoke rooms next door. “We are very happy to be able to bring a traditional Korean singing room back here to NJ, as well as the food,” said owner Mihae Cho. Cho indicated that the expansion of the restaurant included three private rooms with style just as unique as the restaurants’. Strobe lights glowing on the walls teamed with a disco ball sets the mood for karaoke goers of all ages. The walls made of chalkboard entertain the guests old and young as they can write freely as the sing. “People have been requesting something like this for quite some time, so we are happy to be able to get it up and running for everyone,” said Cho. “These rooms can be rented for holiday parties, birthday parties of all ages, or even an hour after dinner.” The smallest room accommodates 10+ people with the larger rooms being able to host parties as large as 20+. Groups have the option of renting it by the hour or picking some of the package deals they have to offer. hris Poulios of La Marque Fur Salon is a fourth generation furrier. Poulios started in the fur business when he was 15, working summers as a storage and cleaning assistant for a prominent retail store on Long Island, NY. By the age of 21, he was leasing half a floor on 7th Avenue in New York City’s fur district and employed 15 to 20 people manufacturing fur garments. “I sold to retail and department stores all over the country, all over the world. New York was the fur capital. It was an exciting time and an exciting business.” His transition to retail came years later. “I always had a wonderful relationship with the owners of La Marque. They always used the best quality merchandise and truly stressed customer service.” When the opportunity came, he took over the store. “It’s so much fun working directly with customers. Creating fur, whether it’s a new garment or restyling an older one, is truly an art.” Poulios offers some tips about cold storage and cleaning. “Sometimes I’m asked why one can’t just leave their garments in a cool, air-conditioned house. The difference is in refrigeration vs air conditioning. Our storage vaults are refrigerated at 45 degrees, as well as humidity controlled. You wouldn’t leave milk out in your air-conditioned house, would you? The back of a fur is suede. As furs age, they begin to dry out. Cold storage slows that aging process considerably.” Poulios also recommends cleaning your fur every other year. “Our cleaning not only removes soil and pollutants from your fur, in addition to perfumes and oils that come from the face and neck, but we also have a moisture adding product that slows the natural drying process that will eventually dry out your fur. I have customers with garments that have lasted over 25 years. An incredible statement when you consider we have become a disposable society. In addition, fur is completely biodegradable. ofia Perez was born in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, in 1961 and moved to Elizabeth in 1968. Although she had no idea at the time, her voyage to the United States would set the stage for her future on the forefront of the hair salon and beauty industry. After graduating from Elizabeth High School in 1979, Perez took an interest in the hair and beauty industry, graduating beauty school in 1982 and working for Gilbert Febles at Virgo’s. To this day, Perez feels that Febles was both her inspiration to succeed in the hair salon industry as well as her mentor — instilling a work ethic that would drive her to much higher peaks and accomplishments. After devoting a handful of years to Virgo’s salon, Perez was ready to venture out on her own, creating the Sofi’s Color Lounge hair salon brand. In 1988, the first salon (formerly Sofi’s Hair Club) was born. After a successful five year run, the salon fell prey to complications from a fire at the neighboring furniture warehouse and was forced to relocate. The new location, on Routes 1&9 in Elizabeth, offered more space and the salon continued to grow — both in following and reputation. During this time, Perez and her family moved to South Jersey. If the workload of being both a busy hair stylist and owner of a high traffic hair salon wasn’t enough, the hour commute was also very taxing. Though the salon was thriving, Perez wanted to devote more time to her family and decided to sell the beauty parlor, continuing on as a hairstylist. As time passed, the relationship between Perez and the new owners began to deteriorate. In time, the business relationship ran its course and died. Needless to say, the hair salon didn’t hold on for much longer after her departure. Not wanting the overhead of running an entire hair salon, Perez tried to make her home in various New Jersey hair salons, but the traffic she generated always seemingly came to be too much for the salon owners to handle. With that being said, the time came for Perez to open one more place to call her own. In 1997, the perfect timing and stars aligning set the stage for the opening of Sofi’s Color Lounge of Cranford. To say that the move to Cranford rejuvenated Perez is an understatement. In the past 15 years, Sofi’s Color Lounge has grown into one of the most influential hair salons of the region. In 2008, Sofi’s Color Lounge expanded to open a location in Summit, furthering the stronghold on the hair service industry in the tristate area. With both locations thriving, Sofi’s Color Lounge is now expanding into Westfield, at 17 Elm St., making this their third home. Eliminating barriers to preventative dental care

ommitted to ensuring that preventive dental care is available and affordable for all, Adam E. Feret, DMD, and his team at Westfield Smiles have created a new membership plan to better serve the community. This plan allows members with or without insurance to receive two cleanings within a 12-month period, an emergency exam, X-rays, and 20 percent off any additional treatments. The in-house plan, without maximums or deductibles, was put in place for patients who might otherwise forego maintaining their oral health due to financial constraints, said practice manager Alice Brown. “We’re eliminating obstacles to people receiving preventative dental care,” she said. “Normally the plan is $349, which is already a fantastic deal, but now it’s unbeatable at $99. We put this in place because there were patients who were not going to the dentist regularly for financial reasons. Previously, it cost $297 just for an exam. Not everyone has that in their budget.” But, as Brown pointed out, ignoring a dental issue will not make it go away. Skipping regular checkups can lead to more pervasive, and ultimately, more costly issues. “Putting off dental care for three to

five years is quite common,” Brown said. “So a small cavity that hasn’t been checked by a dentist and no one is monitoring can go from originally costing $300 to jumping up as high as $3,000 because it’s gotten that much worse. Now you might need a root canal and a crown as opposed to a filling. It could cost you 10 times as much as it would if it had been caught when it was small.” With this new membership plan in place, Dr. Feret and his team see approximately 100 new patients per month. To

meet the demand, Westfield Smiles has welcomed Dr. Maral Regas to the practice and has extended its hours. Having another practitioner on staff also allows Westfield Smiles to provide same-day service. “If you have a check-up and you need a filling, you can have it all done at once,” Brown said. “There’s no need to make another appointment and come back. You can have it taken care of while you’re here.” In addition to financial concerns, Dr. Feret recognizes that fear and anxiety often

prevent people from seeking treatment. To remove those stressors, Westfield Smiles offers a nonjudgmental approach that makes patients feel welcome and relaxed. “We’ve stopped asking, ‘When was your last check-up?’ when people make appointments because it makes them feel judged,” Brown said. “Our staff works hard to increase the patient’s comfort level. People come in with that deer-in-headlights look and when they come out, they say, ‘I can’t believe I just did that and I can’t believe it wasn’t that bad.’” The service-oriented atmosphere, coupled with high-quality care, has allowed patients of all ages to conquer their fears. “People have a tendency to get wrapped up and overwhelmed by the whole scenario but Dr. Feret said, ‘I’ll tell you what you need and I’ll give you what you want. One tooth at a time.’ We’re putting our money where your mouth is in order to eliminate barriers toward preventative dentistry,” Brown said.
