Here’s a list of things to watch for: 1) Difficulties with bathing, dressing, cooking 2) Mobility issues such as difficulty driving or noticing a lot of “dings” on their car 3) Recent falls or accidents, especially more than one 4) A declining chronic health condition such as dementia or congestive heart failure 5) Loss of friendships or loss of active participation in social activities 6) Signs of forgetfulness, such as moldy food found in the refrigerator or complaints of misplaced items Convincing your parent they need help can be difficult. Generally speaking, adult children of aging parents are the first to spot the need. However, parents often resist the help of their adult children; after all they’re used to telling you what you need to do. Furthermore, convincing your elders to accept help that has a fee attached to it is even a greater challenge. How does a family go about getting their elders to welcome outside help or move to a safer setting? Start with the least invasive type of help first For example, there are fairly essential tasks around the home that frequently become more challenging. Tactfully suggest that several people your loved ones know have hired local service companies to mow lawns, shovel snow, and do small tasks around the house, thus freeing them to do things they really enjoy. Invite them to go with you for lunch at a local assisted living facility to see what it is like. Take small steps to reach toward the bigger goal. Take time to adjust, then introduce the next step Some gentleness and compassion can go a long way toward preserving your parents’ or loved ones’ dignity and getting them to allow you to gradually help them. Ensure that you are mindful of your approach so that you don’t give the appearance of trying to take over. Approach your elders in a casual way and don’t dwell on the losses that come with age; remember, asking for help or needing help may be very difficult for them. When you talk with your elders, deliver the message that you want them to live healthier, be as independent as possible, and have burden-free lives. Try to discuss this with your parent over lunch or at a quiet time in a calm manner, not when you are frustrated with them for not getting the help you feel they need. If there are a number of siblings involved in this process, try to avoid power struggles which will only complicate this process. Try to allow the sibling with the greatest rapport and ability to remain calm to be the messenger for everyone. s you walk down the street in the heart of Westfield on these warmer nights you will hear the sound of live jazz music and the smell of Korean cuisine illuminating from a town favorite: Roosterspin. As you get closer, the smell and ambiance will pull you in to take a closer look. The immediate view of over 7,000 classic vintage LPs line the back wall pairing with a beautiful wine rack filled with various California wines. Their signature dish — the double-fried chicken — balances perfectly with the traditional Korean they have been serving since their opening in 2014. The chicken goes through a double frying process in soybean oil which makes it nothing like ordinary fried chicken. This leaves a light, super crispy, and juicy meat with less grease. They then brush a light glaze of either soy garlic or spicy soy garlic on each piece individually to ensure quality. To top this all off the restaurant has recently opened up private karaoke rooms next door. “We are very happy to be able to bring a traditional Korean singing room back here to NJ, as well as the food,” said owner Mihae Cho. Cho indicated that the expansion of the restaurant included three private rooms with style just as unique as the restaurants’. Strobe lights glowing on the walls teamed with a disco ball sets the mood for karaoke goers of all ages. The walls made of chalkboard entertain the guests old and young as they can write freely as the sing. “People have been requesting something like this for quite some time, so we are happy to be able to get it up and running for everyone,” said Cho. “These rooms can be rented for holiday parties, birthday parties of all ages, or even an hour after dinner.” The smallest room accommodates 10+ people with the larger rooms being able to host parties as large as 20+. Groups have the option of renting it by the hour or picking some of the package deals they have to offer. Eliminating barriers to preventative dental care

ommitted to ensuring that preventive dental care is available and affordable for all, Adam E. Feret, DMD, and his team at Westfield Smiles have created a new membership plan to better serve the community. This plan allows members with or without insurance to receive two cleanings within a 12-month period, an emergency exam, X-rays, and 20 percent off any additional treatments. The in-house plan, without maximums or deductibles, was put in place for patients who might otherwise forego maintaining their oral health due to financial constraints, said practice manager Alice Brown. “We’re eliminating obstacles to people receiving preventative dental care,” she said. “Normally the plan is $349, which is already a fantastic deal, but now it’s unbeatable at $99. We put this in place because there were patients who were not going to the dentist regularly for financial reasons. Previously, it cost $297 just for an exam. Not everyone has that in their budget.” But, as Brown pointed out, ignoring a dental issue will not make it go away. Skipping regular checkups can lead to more pervasive, and ultimately, more costly issues. “Putting off dental care for three to five years is quite common,” Brown said. “So a small cavity that hasn’t been checked by a dentist and no one is monitoring can go from originally costing $300 to jumping up as high as $3,000 because it’s gotten that much worse. Now you might need a root canal and a crown as opposed to a filling. It could cost you 10 times as much as it would if it had been caught when it was small.” With this new membership plan in place, Dr. Feret and his team see approximately 100 new patients per month. To meet the demand, Westfield Smiles has welcomed Dr. Maral Regas to the practice and has extended its hours. Having another practitioner on staff also allows Westfield Smiles to provide same-day service. “If you have a check-up and you need a filling, you can have it all done at once,” Brown said. “There’s no need to make another appointment and come back. You can have it taken care of while you’re here.” In addition to financial concerns, Dr. Feret recognizes that fear and anxiety often prevent people from seeking treatment. To remove those stressors, Westfield Smiles offers a nonjudgmental approach that makes patients feel welcome and relaxed. “We’ve stopped asking, ‘When was your last check-up?’ when people make appointments because it makes them feel judged,” Brown said. “Our staff works hard to increase the patient’s comfort level. People come in with that deer-inheadlights look and when they come out, they say, ‘I can’t believe I just did that and I can’t believe it wasn’t that bad.’” The service-oriented atmosphere, coupled with high-quality care, has allowed patients of all ages to conquer their fears. “People have a tendency to get wrapped up and overwhelmed by the whole scenario but Dr. Feret said, ‘I’ll tell you what you need and I’ll give you what you want. One tooth at a time.’ We’re putting our money where your mouth is in order to eliminate barriers toward preventative dentistry,” Brown said. Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim celebrates 100 years of community

ounded in 1917 as the Cranford-Garwood Hebrew Association, the synagogue began in a building on South Avenue in Cranford. In 1960 the temple moved to its current location on Walnut Avenue in Cranford and was then known as Temple Beth-El. In 1999 the temple merged with the Linden synagogue, Temple Mekor Chayim, Suburban Jewish Center which led to its current name of Temple Beth-El Mekor Chayim or TBEMC. TBEMC was founded in November of 1917 and has just announced that it will kick off its 100th anniversary celebration beginning in November 2016 and running through November 2017. In honor of this significant milestone, TBEMC has planned a year of exciting programs, special events and numerous opportunities for the community to become part of their history. The 100th Anniversary Planning Committee has expressed enthusiasm for encouraging members and their families through the decades to partake of these many specially planned activities and will be reaching out to former congregants and their families inviting them to do so. The year-long list of events includes, an installation weekend for our new Cantor and Religious School Director, a sanctuary rededication and Hanukkah party with musical presentations from our Religious School, a Cantor’s concert, family Shabbat weekend and an anniversary Gala. TBEMC is also offering opportunities to be a part of the next 100 years of our history through the creation of a family portrait journal and a new commemorative brick honor garden. Every arm of the synagogue will be involved in the events and festivities from the youngest to the oldest congregants. Programing and events will reflect the congregation’s history through the decades. There will be a Roaring Twenties themed casino night, 100 years of historically significant film and literature celebrating the genres of the past 100 years. A congregant since he was two years old, Marty Metzger shared some of his long time memories of TBEMC. He remembers being in the original building on South Avenue and the move to Walnut Avenue. He talked of the day the cornerstone was laid in 1960 on Walnut Avenue and the wooden planks that covered the mud that would eventually become the beautiful grass of today. But of most importance, he talked of his fond memories, the good people to work with, new friends and old friends and those of blessed memory. He said TBEMC was a community of support during the sad times and a community to

celebrate the good times with. The event co-chairs have expressed their thoughts on this upcoming special year. David and Sandy Springer joined TBEMC over 30 years ago. David is a past president and Sandy is currently one of three Sisterhood presidents. Together they continue to chair the biennial Goods and Services Auction and many other important committees. David and Sandy are proud to be serving as co-chairs for the 100th Anniversary committee. David notes that, “We found warmth and community here from day one and have shared so many wonderful times with our temple family. Our entire family has volunteered for many projects over the years, and always got back way more than we gave. The 100th Anniversary is important to us because we reflect on the many great people who brought us to this day, and now we look to the next generation to carry on the traditions we have built over time.” Gail and David Salomon, also chairs of the 100th Anniversary Committee say they are very proud to be a part of this special and important celebration. All of their children celebrated their religious milestones at TBEMC where the family have been members since 1978. David and Gail have also served in numerous leadership roles over the past years. David is a temple past president, and Gail along with Sandy is also a current Sisterhood president. Stephen and Sidney Solomon, part of the TBEMC leadership are 100th anniversary chairs as well. Stephen is a past temple president and Sidney makes up the third in the current trio of Sisterhood presidents. They are very excited about all of the events and special activities marking the temple’s 100th anniversary celebration. For 100 years, TBEMC has been the spiritual center for its families, supporting them in simchas and loss as well as during personal, local and nationwide sorrows and celebrations. This includes marking religious milestones from birth to b’nai mitzvah to marriage and end of life and all in between. This year-long celebration is the connection between yesterday, today and the hope of tomorrow for generations to come over the next 100 years. The entire community, former members and all who are interested are welcome and invited to join TBEMC in celebration throughout the year.
