Westfield Smiles adds two dentists

here’s three times as much to smile about at Westfield Smiles. Dr. Adam E. Feret has added two dentists — Dr. Maral Regas and Dr. Stephanie Arismendi — to his general dental practice located at 440 East Broad St. in downtown Westfield. “We have an excellent team providing total dental care to our patients,” Feret said. “The addition of Dr. Regas and Dr. Arismendi allow us to serve our patients even better.” Westfield Smiles Dental Health & Wellness Center believes in a team approach to dentistry. Dr. Regas joins Westfield Smiles after

more than 10 years of clinical experience, three years in the United States Air Force, and the last seven years in private practice in Jersey City. “I was drawn to this practice because of the approach they take,” she said. “There are many talented individuals looking at the entire patient — not just their teeth. Regas is committed to advanced education and training. She keeps up to date with research journals and attends dental meetings and classes on the latest advances in dentistry. She is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and Academy of Advanced Dental Education. She was a presenter at the table clinic at the Hinman Dental Conference in Atlanta and enjoys providing outreach to area schools with oral health presentations. From St. Louis to Yale to Israel

aseball took Josh Scharff from St. Louis to Yale, and now it’s placed him in the heart of Israel. For now, he is alone. I’m kind of like the crash test dummy over here,” he said over the phone, his voice stretching across eight time zones back to the United States. “We’ll see how it all shakes out.” Scharff, 25, is the first participant in the fall pilot for the Masa Israel Sports Initiative’s Baseball Program launched by the Jewish Agency. His primary focus will be teaching baseball to the country’s youth, many of whom have never seen the game played before. A Missouri native with Jewish roots, Scharff decided to apply for the program in June and found himself in the streets of Tel Aviv as August came to a close. Two years ago, he spent several months here as part of a fellowship program. “I’ve been searching for an opportunity to get back” he said. “And all of a sudden this fell into my lap. It’s a great honor to give something back to Israel, make a positive impact, and bring something that taught me so many amazing life lessons — baseball — to a lot of people here. It’s a really cool cross-cultural connection.”

The 5-foot-10 first baseman played for a travel club as a teenager, touring around the country while developing skills that would eventually land him a spot at Yale. A self-described “gap-to-gap” hitter, Scharff admits he was “not the fleetest of foot.” He collected 79 hits in 116 games at the college level and his best season came as a senior in 2013, when he hit .284 with a homer and 11 RBIs. Two years later, he’s ready to give back to the youth of Israel and build a baseball culture several thousand miles from home. “I just want to teach them to fall in love with the game,” he said. “The amazing stories, amazing athletes, amazing

personalities the game has produced over the past century. It’s really a global game. All you need to do is find that niche here, and I think once you show people what a rich thing it actually is, it’ll start turning some heads.” Scharff’s boss overseas is Nate Fish, who serves as head national team coach of the Israel Association of Baseball. At this juncture, they’ve only really gotten to know each other over the past two days. But Fish is very familiar with Scharff’s strengths after the summer-long application process. “It doesn’t get much better than that if we’re talking about the kinds of skills

and experiences we are looking for from applicants,” Fish wrote in an e-mail. “He is a capable dude, for sure, smart, good baseball background, but from what I have seen so far his best skill is his attitude.” School begins soon, at which time Scharff will be thrust into the role of instructor. If everything goes to plan, he will be the first of many participants in the initiative. Scharff will lay the groundwork this fall, while many others will be applying to be part of Masa Israel’s five-month baseball program that runs from January to June next year. The plan is to build a national baseball presence that can one day rival international behemoths such as the United States and Cuba. But for now, Scharff will be focused on making sure kids slide their fists together on the bat and place their gloves on the correct hand. It’s all about bridging the gap between Missouri and Tel Aviv. “I know I’m a lot of miles away, and I’m sure my mom would prefer that I take the accounting job down the street from her in St. Louis,” he said. “But this is special.” Masa Israel is a beneficiary of the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Overwhelmed, over stressed child or caregiver of an older adult?

he Wilf at Home Program will provide you with help and peace of mind. The weight of the world is on every caregiver or adult child’s shoulders as their parents begin to age. David Rosenberg, executive director of Wilf at Home, a program that helps older adults age safely and securely in place, hears such concerns on a daily basis. “We often get calls from family members and caregivers where the parents are frail and starting to limit where they will drive, they are frequently forgetful, have trouble bathing themselves, or have difficulties with mobility. The family members are having a very hard time finding a competent resource to turn to for support,” he said. “To further complicate this, the older adult wants to remain in their own home. The adult child really wants to promote this but the stress and burden of trying to provide the support for this choice is often overwhelming and very stressful.” Rosenberg pointed to statistics presented in The National Alliance for Caregiving and the AARP Public Policy Institute’s recent report, “Caregiving in the U.S. 2015,” which notes that a large majority of caregivers provide care for a relative (85 percent), with 49 percent caring for a parent or parent-in-law. The report also reveals that: • Caregiving is particularly time-intensive for those caring for a spouse/partner (44.6 hours per week) • 40 percent of caregivers surveyed report that the various caregiving activities they perform can lead to a high feeling of burden, while 58 percent of caregivers note moderate to high burden • 22 percent of caregivers felt their health had worsened as a result of caregiving • Caring for a close relative — such as a spouse or parent (45 percent and 44 percent, respectively) — is more emotionally stressful for caregivers than caring for another relative (35 percent) or non-relative (18 percent) • Six in 10 caregivers report having to make a workplace accommodation as a result of caregiving, such as cutting back on their working hours, taking a leave of absence, receiving a warning about performance, or other such impacts Wilf at Home, which has opened in Somerset and Middlesex counties (including the Monroe Township area) by the Oscar and Ella Wilf Campus for Senior Living in Somerset, is available to help families navigate the stresses of helping an older adult as they face challenges and to help them age in place independently and safely, said Rosenberg. “One of the most important features of Wilf at Home is the concierge level of service. The concierge is available to develop a personalized, one-on-one relationship with mature adults and their family. A Wilf at Home member or their adult child can call the concierge to discuss their concerns, answer questions, connect people to services, and conduct regular check-ins. It is a resource for the entire family.” Another unique feature to the Wilf at Home program is a free annual home safety assessment by a Wilf Campus nurse to ensure that there are no fall hazards in the home and to monitor the older adult’s day-to-day lifestyle and activities and provide a comprehensive picture to help the family get a sense of the senior’s strengths and challenges. Caregivers can be assured that Wilf at Home did its homework by carefully reviewing the different providers it partners with to provide quality service at greater discounted rates than the standard senior citizen discount. Wilf at Home’s menu of services includes assistance with organizing paperwork and bill paying, grocery shopping and delivery, and handyman services and home modifications, as well as health, wellness, and socialization programs. A homecare health aide who can assist with daily tasks, a personal emergency response system, prescription drug delivery, and transportation advocacy are also made available. “I think we’ve created a very unique program model,” said Wilf Campus CEO Susan Harris when asked about the development of the Wilf at Home program. “We spent a tremendous amount of time asking older adults, professionals in the field, and family members what they wanted and needed with the end goal of the older adult being able to remain in the place they call home today.” Adult children caring for aging parents, as well as all of the other commitments which life puts upon them, will find comfort, security, and understanding from those managing the Wilf at Home program. Our mission is to provide social, recreational, and cultural programs, and humanitarian services through all phases of life. Our state-of-the art fitness center has the latest in strength-training and cardiovascular equipment, as well as a full fitness class schedule. Indoor and outdoor pools are available for fitness or recreation. The Brody Family Early Learning Center offers infant care, preschool, a transitional “bridges” kindergarten program, full-day kindergarten, kindergarten “wraparound,” after-care programs, and drop-in childcare. During the summer, Camp Yachad offers flexible weekday and travel camps for campers 18 months to 14 years. We also have the JCC Performing Arts Camp (JPAC) for second through eighth graders and our Maccabi Sports Camp. Both specialty camps are at the expansive Wardlaw-Hartridge campus in Edison. Our Cultural Arts and Education Department offers stimulating classes and programming, including our Jewish Film Festival, a wide variety of authors’ visits, University Lecture Series, and a variety of interesting trips throughout the year. In-house classes, programs, and events are available for all adults and seniors. For youth and teens, we have classes, leadership development, and social action programs. We also have competitive swim programs and basketball and softball leagues. Our cafe is open Sunday through Friday.
