Broadway hits come to New Brunswick

Broadway’s Nancy Opel to star in George Street’s “Curvy Widow”

eorge Street Playhouse has announced full casting for "Curvy Widow," starring Broadway’s Nancy Opel (GSP’s “The Toxic Avenger,” Broadway’s “Honeymoon in Vegas”) as Bobby Goldman. The sassy musical comedy will not only close out GSP’s 2016-17 season, but also mark the final show performed in the Playhouse’s current building. “Curvy Widow” runs May 2-21, 2017, with opening night scheduled for May 5. The musical, praised by the Citizen Times as “a hilarious, high-voltage romp,” features an autobiographical book by Bobby Goldman with music and lyrics by Drew Brody. The show will be directed by Peter Flynn and choreographed by Marcos Santana. Joining Opel in the cast are Andrea Bianchi (TV’s “As The World Turns”), Aisha de Haas (Broadway’s “Rent”; “Bring In Da Noise, Bring In Da Funk”), Elizabeth Ward Land (Broadway’s “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” “Memphis”), Ken Land (Broadway’s “The Scarlet Pimpernel,” “Promises, Promises”), Alan Muraoka (TV’s “Sesame Street,” Broadway’s “Miss Saigon”) and Chris Shyer (Broadway’s “Mamma Mia,” National Tour of “Book of Mormon”). Bianchi and Shyer appeared alongside Opel in a production of “Curvy Widow” at NC Stage last fall. Opel returns to GSP after her performance as Ma/The Mayor in “The Toxic Avenger” to star in this sassy, frank, and witty musical comedy about the exploits of a 50-something widow whose adventures in the least expected places reveal unexpected truths about life, love, survival, and sex. Opel’s extensive Broadway credits also include “Beautiful - The Carole King Musical,” “Memphis,” “Evita,” and “Urinetown” (Tony nomination). s you walk down the street in the heart of Westfield on these warmer nights you will hear the sound of live jazz music and the smell of Korean cuisine illuminating from a town favorite: Roosterspin. As you get closer, the smell and ambiance will pull you in to take a closer look. The immediate view of over 7,000 classic vintage LPs line the back wall pairing with a beautiful wine rack filled with various California wines. Their signature dish — the double-fried chicken — balances perfectly with the traditional Korean they have been serving since their opening in 2014. The chicken goes through a double frying process in soybean oil which makes it nothing like ordinary fried chicken. This leaves a light, super crispy, and juicy meat with less grease. They then brush a light glaze of either soy garlic or spicy soy garlic on each piece individually to ensure quality. To top this all off the restaurant has recently opened up private karaoke rooms next door. “We are very happy to be able to bring a traditional Korean singing room back here to NJ, as well as the food,” said owner Mihae Cho. Cho indicated that the expansion of the restaurant included three private rooms with style just as unique as the restaurants’. Strobe lights glowing on the walls teamed with a disco ball sets the mood for karaoke goers of all ages. The walls made of chalkboard entertain the guests old and young as they can write freely as the sing. “People have been requesting something like this for quite some time, so we are happy to be able to get it up and running for everyone,” said Cho. “These rooms can be rented for holiday parties, birthday parties of all ages, or even an hour after dinner.” The smallest room accommodates 10+ people with the larger rooms being able to host parties as large as 20+. Groups have the option of renting it by the hour or picking some of the package deals they have to offer. The 2016–17 season featured some of the most exciting and highest caliber artists SOPAC has ever presented. The season began with sold-out performances by David Crosby in August, followed by the legendary Donovan in September. In October, over 800 people sang to the rafters in two sold-out concerts by the Indigo Girls. The following night, SOPAC’s tenth anniversary celebration featured extraordinary local talent including Suzzanne Douglas, Savion Glover, Bill Charlap and Brother Valiant. In November Josh Ritter returned to SOPAC for another sold-out performance, and in February SOPAC welcomed the amazing Rosanne Cash to the stage as well as Marcia Ball and the Subdudes. In the spring, SOPAC featured Oleta Adams and David Sedaris, and in June they welcome 2015 Tony Award-winner Kelli O’Hara, Aimee Mann and comedian Louie Anderson. All of these artists normally play much larger venues, but SOPAC is gaining a great reputation as a beautiful and intimate theatre where artists love to come to and connect with their fans.

New Trinitas surgeon enhances multidisciplinary cancer care team

r. Adriana Suarez-Ligon has joined Trinitas Regional Medical Center’s growing roster of prestigious surgeons, with a specialization in breast surgery. She comes highly trained in the spectrum of benign and malignant breast diseases, and has become an expert in breast pathology. She offers such procedures as breast conservation surgery, sentinel lymph node biopsies, and axillary node dissections. “I truly believe that optimal care is delivered when all involved in delivering care (a multidisciplinary team) and receiving care (the patient and their family) work together to achieve the same goal,” says Dr. Suarez-Ligon. Breast cancer treatment requires local and systemic therapies. The cornerstone of local therapy is surgery. Research has proven that a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer treatment increases survival. The Trinitas Comprehensive Cancer Center (TCCC) is comprised of medical oncologists, a radiation oncologist, a plastic surgeon, and a certified breast cancer navigator. Eliminating barriers to preventative dental care

ommitted to ensuring that preventive dental care is available and affordable for all, Adam E. Feret, DMD, and his team at Westfield Smiles have created a new membership plan to better serve the community. This plan allows members with or without insurance to receive two cleanings within a 12-month period, an emergency exam, X-rays, and 20 percent off any additional treatments. The in-house plan, without maximums or deductibles, was put in place for patients who might otherwise forego maintaining their oral health due to financial constraints, said practice manager Alice Brown.

“We’re eliminating obstacles to people receiving preventative dental care,” she said. “Normally the plan is $349, which is already a fantastic deal, but now it’s unbeatable at $99. We put this in place because there were patients who were not going to the dentist regularly for financial reasons. Previously, it cost $297 just for an exam. Not everyone has that in their budget.” But, as Brown pointed out, ignoring a dental issue will not make it go away. Skipping regular checkups can lead to more pervasive, and ultimately, more costly issues. “Putting off dental care for three to five years is quite common,” Brown said. “So a small cavity that hasn’t been checked by a dentist and no one is monitoring can go from originally costing $300 to jumping up as high as $3,000 because it’s gotten that much worse. Now you might need a root canal and a crown as opposed to a filling. It could cost you 10 times as much as it would if it had been caught when it was small.” With this new membership plan in place, Dr. Feret and his team see approximately 100 new patients per month. To meet the demand, Westfield Smiles has welcomed Dr. Maral Regas to the practice and has extended its hours. Having another practitioner on staff also allows Westfield Smiles to provide same-day service. “If you have a check-up and you need a filling, you can have it all done at once,” Brown said. “There’s no need to make another appointment and come back. You can have it taken care of while

you’re here.” In addition to financial concerns, Dr. Feret recognizes that fear and anxiety often prevent people from seeking treatment. To remove those stressors, Westfield Smiles offers a nonjudgmental approach that makes patients feel welcome and relaxed. “We’ve stopped asking, ‘When was your last check-up?’ when people make appointments because it makes them feel judged,” Brown said. “Our staff works hard to increase the patient’s comfort level. People come in with that deer-inheadlights look and when they come out, they say, ‘I can’t believe I just did that and I can’t believe it wasn’t that bad.’” The service-oriented atmosphere, coupled with high-quality care, has allowed patients of all ages to conquer their fears. “People have a tendency to get wrapped up and overwhelmed by the whole scenario but Dr. Feret said, ‘I’ll tell you what you need and I’ll give you what you want. One tooth at a time.’ We’re putting our money where your mouth is in order to eliminate barriers toward preventative dentistry,” Brown said. Are Your Ears Ringing?

News Worth Hearing from a JFK Medical Center Audiologist

lmost everyone has experienced “ringing in the ears” at some point in their life. For most, the sensation – which healthcare professionals call tinnitus – is temporary and a minor annoyance. For others, however, the persistence or intensity of the noise represents a significant distraction, a cause for anxiety, and even a major obstacle to going about their everyday activities. When tinnitus affects quality of life, physicians frequently refer sufferers to Virginia Gural-Toth, AuD, CCC-A, and her colleagues at the Center for Audiology at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Dr. Gural-Toth, Manager for Audiology Programs at the Center, recently answered Central Jersey Healthy Living’s questions about tinnitus and how the Center for Audiology helps people deal with the condition. Q. What exactly is tinnitus? A. People typically refer to tinnitus as “ringing in the ears” and, while that is a good description of the sound that many experience, tinnitus can manifest itself as any number of noises, including as a buzz, whine, or other sounds, in addition to “ringing.” Whether in one ear or both ears, the person is hearing a noise that is not coming from the external environment but is originating in his or her ear or head. The frequency and intensity of tinnitus also can vary considerably from person to person and over the course of time. Similarly, there is wide variation in how people respond to tinnitus and how critical an issue it becomes in their lives. Q. Who is at risk for tinnitus? A. Advancing age is one of the main risk factors. In fact, roughly one in seven people in their 60s reports experiencing the condition. Other risk factors include

trauma or illness directly affecting the ear, exposure to loud noises, male gender, and smoking. Cardiovascular conditions and diabetes are associated with increased risk for tinnitus and, while it would be uncommon for someone’s heart disease or diabetes to cause him to first seek medical attention because of a complaint of ringing in the ears, this connection underscores the importance of seeking prompt medical evaluation for tinnitus. Similarly, some medications have been associated with tinnitus, so it is important for any ringing in the ears to be discussed with a physician who may make a medication adjustment or provide a referral to JFK’s program. Q. Can tinnitus be cured? A. Unfortunately, at this time there is no cure for tinnitus – despite what others may have told you or what you have seen on television “infomercials,” none of the supposed cures for tinnitus have proven themselves in clinical trials. Q. If tinnitus can’t be cured, what does your program offer people? A. We help people deal effectively with the impact tinnitus is having on their lives. Through a comprehensive, evidence-based approach called Tinnitus Retraining Therapy, we enable people to reduce the extent to which the noise interferes with their quality of life. While the degree of success depends on a number of factors, 80% or more of patients experience significant improvement. Q. How does your program work? A. The first step is a medical evaluation to rule out serious underlying conditions. The physician then writes a prescription for the services we provide. We begin with a very thorough assessment, which includes determining what risk factors may have contributed

to the tinnitus and the impact the condition is having on the person’s life. A standard audiological test is conducted to check for hearing loss, which typically accompanies tinnitus. When indicated by the results of the standard hearing testing or other factors, we also conduct sophisticated otoacoustic emissions testing. We then look at all of the test results and other information we have gathered to formulate an individualized approach to Tinnitus Retraining Therapy. Q. If you could tell people just one thing about tinnitus, what would it be? A. People often use the phrase “suffering in silence” to describe enduring a difficult condition without speaking up or taking action. In the case of tinnitus, this might instead be described as “suffering with noise” and – just like suffering in silence – there is no need to do so. If you are experiencing tinnitus, see your physician for a medical evaluation. This is essential for identifying and addressing any underlying condition and is a necessary first step for referral to the services we offer at the Center for Audiology at JFK Medical Center. As I mentioned, we are able to help 80% or more of our patients obtain significant relief from tinnitus, and the sooner you seek help, the sooner you’re able to begin reducing the toll that ringing in the ears takes on your quality of life.
