ORANG ASLI CULTURAL VILLAGE Pulau Banding Ecotourism Architecture Studio 4 – Best Project Asia Young Designer Award Finalist

Pulau Banding Ecotourism Banding Island, being inhabited by Orang Asli mostly of the Semang tribe rather portrays the true identity of the place itself. The indigenous people bear a million and one unique cultural values and tradition yet to be known to the world. However, due to the isolation of these people

representation of Orang Asli in the design, plants - a part of nature are thoroughly adapted in the design. Different parts of plants are used in interpreting its function and its form is adapted - branches as circulation, leaves as the main activity area of production, and even pistil as an important hub for growth of the area. RUMPUN AFFORDABLE HOMES Architecture Studio 3 PR1MA-PAM Architecture Ideas Student Competition First Prize Winner

PR1MA Affordable Homes The future intentions for this design is to instil multifunctionality, flexibility and compacity in order to achieve a quality affordable living. Adapting IBS, the home designs are based on the concept of building blocks. Each block is a standardised module which could be constructed just like Lego, stacked on one another, and allowing its corners to be able to expand in the future. The efficiency of a square enables it to grow into the rectangular layout applied in spatial design. A variety of configuration of the layout can be achieved, thus making it rather adaptable to the availability of space. It suits the objective to grow homes, rather than simply to live in a house. With the expandable design, growing families could continue to stay and add more spaces or rooms to their homes to accommodate their capacity. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

[RE]VIVE [RE]DEFINE [RE]JUVENATE Professional Work - Suncheon International Competition for Architectural Ideas Participation

[Re]miniscence of the Old City Suncheon holds over 700 years of history in its nooks and crannies. This is a tribute to a culture based on respect for its history and traditions. The design process was a series of rethinking vernacular architecture, an expression of it in the modern language. Transitioning from the Old City archetype to the urban environment does not mean culture and tradition are to be completely abandoned. Our design proposal is an epitome of bringing the old into the new, a fusion of eras via reinterpretation, an evolution of the past days. The photograph of how the Suncheon Fortress South Gate looked like back then is an inspiration to revive the original environment of the city. The intention isn’t to merely re-create what already is, but to re-define it. The design is a re-interpretation of the famous architectural typology of the olden days, the thatched-roof buildings common before the industrial era. The thatched-roof were a symbol of a close-knit community, in which the maintenance of the roof was a cooperation between fellow neighbours every year. For us, the community value it adhered to was an important symbolism and element that need to be preserved. Although community spirit is not instilled through thatching of the roof in this scheme, we have specially designed a lush open green space for the community to interact and carry out activities - having picnics, basking, enjoying the view, etc.
