In September 2021, we launched Those Boys in the Band Magazine, a digital extension of NK Airplay Radio, which expands our love of New Kids on the Block, associated artists, and boy bands alike, while bringing back nostalgic memories of teen magazines from the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Let's take a trip down memory lane together to celebrate our first year (because, why not?).

My main role at NK Airplay Radio is the lead Graphic Designer. On NK Airplay, I am primarily responsible for graphics that you see on social media.

When the idea came up to start a magazine, I was completely ecstatic! Over the course of my 22 years as a graphic designer, I've developed a love for certain media, and designing magazines is definitely in the top 5!

We wanted to bring back the nostalgia of the teen magazines of our youth. Our main goal was to bring you a magazine that you will love, enjoy, and relive special moments of the boyband fandom!

As I have worked on the magazine over the past year, I have experienced my favorite moments.

I enjoy designing the magazine the most. I am passionate about art and design. It is truly my life. Together with my fellow staff members, I strive to make a final product that reflects our love and hard work.

This is truly a magazine that is made for the fans, by the fans.

Here are our favorite moments from our first year!

Our first issue was released September 6, 2021.

September 6, 2021 In our first issue of Those Boys in the Band, the main feature was an interview with Jeff Timmons and NK Airplay Radio community wishes to Donnie for his birthday.

October 18, 2021 Our special Breast Cancer Awareness issue featured our interview with Bethany Wood, sister of Danny Wood, and representative for Remember Betty.

November 16, 2021 Our special Thanksgiving issue with a NK Airplay Radio community highlight of Jon Knight’s birthday.

December 20, 2021 Our Christmas issue featuring NK Airplay Radio community birthday wishes to Joey McIntyre – this was definitely one of my favorite issues... I wonder why?

March 16, 2022 (Spring) Our first issue after switching from monthly to quarterly, March was a great month with our new column, The Quarterly Boyband Review!

July 14, 2022 (Summer) This was my favorite issue to work on so far. I feel this issue started to truly reflect the feeling we’ve been striving for. The cover is my favorite. In this issue, a centerfold and wallet pic were introduced to bring in the true teen magazine nostalgia.

Staff and Listeners Favorite Memories from our First Year

Wow, 1 year! I can't believe a year has passed. This is such a fabulous magazine! I have to say my favorite wasn't an article or column, as such. It was the centerfold in the last issue. I absolutely loved the graphics there. It completely took me back to magazine days and there were posters inside.

And of course, my BH sister, DJ JoeyMacFreak!

I just love the fact that the station HAS a magazine. It's been an honor to be a writer/ editor with such talent! It just gives me joy knowing I am a part of something so awesome.

Well, what can I say? What started as an idea, has grown into something amazing! It is truly an honor to be a part of the magazine. I guess I would say my favorite memory is our very first issue. To see how it all turned out, to read every article, and to actually get to write as a part of the team, was truly a great feeling!

- DJ Spicy

I love the whole magazine. It's so much fun reading all the articles. We also get to be a part of something creative & amazing. I'm proud to be a part of this team.

When I first got the idea for a magazine from another fanbase, I was wondering how we could pull off something like that. If it weren’t for DJ JoeyMacFreak and my amazing team of writers, this magazine couldn’t have been possible. My favorite issue was our first one – getting to see the design for the first time and seeing our listeners’ reactions was really neat!
