“This Annual Report celebrates and thanks everyone who made a financial contribution in support of the school in 2012-2013. As individuals, through your generous gifts to The Fund, you make the difference that makes and will keep LWHS great.” Throughout the strategic planning process, which began in July 2012 and recently culminated with the Board’s adoption of a new five-year strategic plan, I have had the opportunity to think deeply about Lick-Wilmerding High School’s future, how we get there from the present, and how we arrived at this present from the past. One constant over time has been the generosity that established, supported, and will carry the school to its future; that was the basic topic of this letter last year. Another constant has been the commitment to creating and maintaining a diverse community—a commitment which has required concurrent effort to making a LWHS education financially

lick-wilmerding high school annual report 2012-2013 | 17
providing for LWHS I was fortunate to attend an excellent grade school, high school, and college. I have tried to contribute to LickWilmerding every year because of its significant role in my educational and personal development. I had my first opportunities at Lick to take initiative in choosing my educational path, such as enrolling in advanced courses taught by superb faculty. I’ll never forget the willingness of some teachers who saw potential in me to set aside time, even personal time, to support my learning and achievement. Likewise, I have great memories of all the friendships I formed during those years.
Many institutions and organizations have been important to me, and I have supported them financially, but Lick is one of the few I decided to include in my estate plan. In large part that is because of the great influence it had on my life. Although my kids will never attend Lick (we live in Pennsylvania), I want to do what I can to ensure that the school will always be available to benefit others as it did me. —C. David Brown 1987

my LWHS experience Lick taught me how to learn. The personal connections to the teachers were such a big part of my experience at LWHS. My math teacher opened his office to my classmates and me for tutoring and review years after he taught us freshman geometry. I enjoyed being able to give him an office tour at my internship this past summer. The community involvement and philanthropy projects at LWHS inspired my classmates to spend time fundraising and doing service work in El Salvador, Honduras, Turkey, and Senegal, amongst other locations. I made many friends that I am sure will be lifelong connections. I would have never stumbled across the opportunity to work in El Salvador had I not met my classmate Francesca at Lick, whose grandmother lives in El Salvador. After spending four years working on behalf of the homeless shelter in El Salvador with three great friends, I know we will always stay connected in some way. On a recent weekend, I saw five classmates in New York City.
The well-rounded, hands-on education allowed me to pursue my interests in solving real-world problems. In a fabrications class, we designed and built furniture for a second grade classroom in Oakland. The teacher sent us a thank you note describing the delight in the eyes of the second graders when they saw their new classroom: “They came in after lunch and were trying to find their perfect place to sit down. Most just walked in circles for a while. Some were laughing, and some started crying, and some just easily sat down, smiling. The crying kids were in shock, as I am still. I stayed late moving things around and staring at the exquisite loveliness of the incredible book shelf, coat/backpack hooks, puppet theatre, signs, and the awesome desks. Your hard work and generosity of spirit will enable many children to have more fun learning, and allow their teacher to dance a better dance teaching them. THANKS! Love, Ms. Jan.” The technical skills I learned in my hands-on classes helped me in my math, science, and engineering classes thus far, both during my gap year at the University of St Andrews, and at Brown. —Sara Peletz 2012

THE event: Donations to “30 in 30 for Robotics” During the past several years, the Development Committee of the Board brainstormed ideas to create a new event for the school. In April, THE event debuted with spectacular success. The goals of THE event are: to bring together our adult community in a social setting, to produce an event that taps into the intellectual creativity and deep thinking shared by many at LWHS, and to execute a small, fast, and vital fundraising component to fund a specific need at the school. Three hundred members of the school community and their friends attended the inaugural event, which featured KR Sridhar of Bloom Energy and David Kelley of IDEO and the Stanford d. School in conversation with LWHS Head of School Eric Temple. The discussion was enlightening, funny, thought-provoking, and enjoyed by all. Following THE event, we held a short fundraising drive to raise needed funds to offset start-up costs for new classes entitled “Building and Programming Intelligent Machines”. Through the generosity of those listed here we were able to buy needed equipment and respond to student enthusiasm by offering three sections of the new course. Thank you to everyone who supported THE event!
