LANE CARLSON Occupation: FORD Model/Actor/ Philanthropist.
If you were stranded on a desert island, what three products would you take with you? Sunglasses, a lighter and a knife.
Hometown: Stillwater, Minnesota. What projects are you currently working on? On the philanthropic side, I am working on a calendar of great events for 2011 that bring together the worlds of philanthropy and film in amazing places like Cannes, Venice, Toronto and the Czech Republic. I am also heading up a new position as Goodwill Ambassador to a UN affiliated organization called OCCAM (Observatory for Cultural and Audiovisual Communication in the Mediterranean). On the modeling side, my agents at FORD are looking to collaborate with brands and companies that are share my passion for giving back. What is most challenging about your career? Being able to ride a steady wave throughout the many ups and downs.
If you could revive one beauty or grooming trend from the past what would it be? Style from the ’50s — think James Dean. If you could erase a current fashion or beauty trend, which would it be? Neon shirts and shoes. Which person (living or dead) do you think epitomizes glamour? Marilyn Monroe — just the mention of her name still makes guys’ eyes perk up and girls envious. She wore it better than most and was a marketer’s dream come true. Her sex appeal and savvy will never be forgotten.
What is your favorite pastime? Playing a little baseball.
What artists come up as recently played on your iPod? My taste in music is all over the place. I’m into The Beatles, Amos Lee, Carla Bruni, Eminem, Ray Charles and Dave Mathews.
What is your favorite beauty/wellness trick? Don’t take life too seriously, it will age you.
What song do you play before a big night out? Anything Paul Van Dyk.

Is there a song that encapsulates your life (at the moment)? “Not Afraid” by Eminem. What superpower would you love to have? To be able to fly. Who do you consider real life superheroes? Parents and teachers. How do you give back? I sit on the executive board of two great charities in New York: Sunflower Children is a not-for-profit that helps disadvantaged children around the world, and Beauty of Help is a charity founded by my girlfriend, supermodel/philanthropist, Tatiana Kucharova. In the upcoming year, we are teaming up for a calendar of events that revolve around film and philanthropy. The idea is that fundraising doesn’t have to be boring. We are bringing in some big names, top models and a great group of donors. Where are you right now? In the Hamptons, soaking up the sun.

Who do you consider a real life superhero? My Mom, she’s an amazing woman. She has inspired me to be strong no matter what. She also taught me not to say things or make big decisions when you’re mad because you can’t take it back. And not to follow dreams, but to chase them down. How do you give back? I’m involved with a local charity, The Venice Family Clinic, which provides high quality medical care throughout the Los Angeles area, and it is the largest free clinic in the nation. I’m also starting a foundation to build an Armenian historical and cultural museum. I’m of Armenian heritage and I believe that our history needs to be preserved. I also hope for the foundation to grow to provide grants for educational and artistic endeavors. Where are you right now? In Mammoth Lakes, California wishing for it to snow. The air really is different up here. OCTOBER 2010
