Spring term 2024 The return to school meant “mocks” for our Year 11’s – a period of intense academic study and exams which they dealt with admirably. Meanwhile, the rest of the house made snow sculptures. In reality, they all worked hard as well, as is evidenced by the number of academic merits Aewol students have received this half term.
MUN, Robots and App’s Mention should be made of John Hyeonbeom Shin’s excellent “Best Delegate” winning performance at the recent Model United Nations. Congrat’s. Daniel Hojin Kim, between being one of the team creating models with Vex Robotics, identified a way to capture student voice and built an app to allow for democratic provision of sports facilities during breakout. It launched this week.
In downtime the Asia Cup has provided some highs and lows and has generally been far from relaxing viewing.
We have even had football themed birthday cakes!
A confusion of cakes There are times when students do not always make the best decisions and we did have some confusion over cakes when they did not think to check whose cakes belong to who. To resolve this, the wider year group served birthday cake for the whole house to enjoy. They followed this up by running a “bakeoff” competion that weekend.

“Bake-off ” preparation
The weekend
In addition to the regular sessions for homework, reading in English, Bryant and ”breakout” for Art, Music and Sport, we also found the time to fit in a few activities as a home.
Year 7 - Vaunce!
Year 8 – 98.1 Park
Year 9 - Aquaman
Year 10 - Tapdong
Aewol Pool Party
Coming up Interhome Just Dance and Fifa 2024 competition. Aewol champions will take on the other boarding homes in a quest to become the boarding champion.
Ice Skating We have a full size ice rink just down the road – it is about time Aewol visited it for a slide around.
“We Are Aewol”
Sunday sessions designed to help develop internationally-minded young people who will grow to become responsible members of local, national and global communities.
Sunday sessions There were a couple of important sessions this half term. For Holocaust Memorial Day, Aewol had a look at bystanders, resistance and courage during the Holocaust. Allowing for the current world situation with acts of violence and wars in the name of religion, we took a global view of religion working outwards from Jeju for the UN Interfaith Harmony Week. This work will be turned into a wall display upon our return from the break.
House charities All Aewol students should use the “Charity Miles” app to help raise funds for the Malala Fund. Year 8 have been challenged to cover 30 kms each in the run up to Seollal. Donnie Park cruised past the target, with William Koh coming in second. I look forward to the rest of the year group catching up. Meanwhile, when we return, the house committee will plan an event for Education For All as the rebuild their boarding homes following the recent devastating earthquake. https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/earthquakecrisis-appeal/

The Aewol routine, awards and merits, and what’s coming up
Weekly schedule and English English reading fluency Our students have an opportunity to develop their English reading skills three evenings a week (Wednesday and Friday from 19:00 – 19:30 and on Sunday’s from 16:00 – 16:30). For this they must have a paper book in English. They log the book they are reading and review it once finished. The best reviews are turned into posters that decorate the entrance to the Aewol library. Students are expected to read at least one book every half term.
Single-use plastic and exeat Water bottles – a reminder Please do not send trays of single-use plastic water bottles to the boarding house. We are trying to reduce our environmental impact and, as the student’s know, they will be confiscated. There are eight filtered water coolers in the house from which students can refill their bottles. Scheduled exeat, 08 March It is good to have a break from the routine of school and boarding and, we notice, the boys always return refreshed and ready to focus again. The next scheduled exeat is 08 March.
