Halla East News January 2024
Message from Ms Coughlan (BM) January 2024
Term 2 heralded in the cold weather perfectly timed for the intense study period. Mocks and Study leave for the Yr13’s and R2 tests, EE presentations/meetings for the Yr12’s. At the first Halla East home meeting expectations were set regarding the new “Study Leave” concept and behaviours with the Yr13’s given the Korean system of coming of age on 1st of January. On the whole study leave went extremely well with most girls adhering to the rules, sticking to a regular schedule and using their additional time wisely. Unfortunately, some girls had to learn the hard way but they will no doubt be better prepared for the real exams. Despite the stress, some fun was had with the blessing of a wonderful snowfall. The Yr12’s are stepping up their community living skills and are working hard to improve on their R1 grades. They know maintaining these grades with the increased level of IB workload and difficulty will be something to celebrate after Seollal.

Mock reflection- by Elena Shin Mock has always been a strenuous process for Y13, yet a significant step in preparing for final exams. Some of us were very stressed about mock exams, as they are taken into consideration for US universities. But generally, everyone had to experience the academic burden due to strictly controlled exam conditions. Although, we were being challenged both mentally and physically, we were able to reflect on ourselves about where we were at in terms of academic progress. Also, it was meaningful to experience harsh conditions before the real exams. During the horrible mock period, the leave system was, so to speak, a streak of light in the oppressive dark of our study. All Y13 were extremely excited by the adoption of the study leave system as it offered more freedom from morning registration. However, we could not avoid the responsibility stemming from the freedom given. The main disadvantage was that we became more reluctant to stay up late due to late morning registration. Also, there were some incidents of missing or being late for exams due to oversleeping. But these events happened only for a few of us, and most of us managed our time wisely to prepare for future exams. The study leave system was beneficial in terms of experiencing a real IB exam period. Also, we could acknowledge any possible mistakes that could be made, including oversleeping and poor time management. More importantly, this system relieved stress for many students and prevented burnout from continuous exams. On the whole, most of us were mentally prepared for exams by being free from morning registration, which allowed us to maintain our motivation for studying.
“Study leave system allowed me to use my spare time for study. I was glad that I did not have to prepare in the morning.” - Haeun (13)
